First Lady of Song Ella Fitzgerald overcame the challenges of a tumultuous youth through music, her performances with the Chick Webb Orchestra at the Savoy Ballroom and distinctive scat singing leading to early recordings and the 1938 breakthrough, ‘A Tisket A Tasket.’ After recording bebop LPs for Decca, manager Norman Granz launched the Verve label to allow her to broaden her musical horizons, exploring the Great American Songbook. Released in 1960, Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas sees her tackle Christmas classics as only Ella can, the lavish orchestration overseen by noted conductor Frank de Vol.

Cadet Records was one of the oddest jazz labels to ever issue LPs in America; it was the jazz imprint of Chess Records, and most of its releases came from the minds of two men: Charles Stepney and Richard Evans. The latter man ran point on the short-lived label's lone holiday release, which found the label's house band – which included luminaries like Phil Upchurch – doing their thing on 10 holiday classics. A curio for the cratedigger who already owns every Dorothy Ashby album, this album was AAA remastered by Barry Grint.

Limited to 2,000 copies, the VMP exclusive version of The Soulful Strings' The Magic of Christmas is pressed 180g Opaque Olive vinyl at Independent Record Pressing (IRP). The AAA 1 LP will arrive in a single, tip-on, foil-stamped and numbered jacket. The lacquers were cut by Barry Grint at Alchemy Mastering at AIR.

Power-pop punks the Boys signed to Nems in 1976, which led to a following in Europe, but disagreements with Nems spawned alter-ego the Yobs, who specialised in tasteless adaptations. The 1980 release The Yobs Christmas Album finds the Yobs at their most puerile and profane, a collection of deliciously vile Xmas-themed singalongs, offering rude alternate renditions of holiday favourites such as ‘Twelve Days Of Christmas’ and a druggy take of ‘Auld Lang Syne,’ alongside equally shocking originals such as ‘Ballad Of The Warrington.’ Make sure the kids & granny are out of earshot – this is the Yobs at their sickest!

Joseph Washington Jr.’s 1983 holiday LP puts a soulful, funky, suave ribbon on nine frosty Christmas cuts. In that season of music’s traditional descent into threadbare schmaltz, Merry Christmas to You restores joy and wonder to a blizzard of bland. Under this tree, find undiscovered classics for our cynical age: the buoyant “Jesus’ Birthday,” the hot and bothered soul of “Merry Christmas,” the ridiculously catchy wallet-opener “Shopping.” The world of records produces just a precious few yuletide keepers: Spector’s A Christmas Gift for You; Fahey’s The New Possibility; Guaraldi’s indelible Charlie Brown Christmas. Down another nog and file Joseph Washington Jr. comfortably next to those.

Re-issue of the 1987 Profile Records holiday compilation in a red and white split colored pressing, with songs by Run-DMC, Dana Dane, Sweet Tee, The Showboys, The Surf M.C.s, Spyder-D, and more. Leading off with the Run-DMC smash, "Christmas In Hollis," this classic Christmas compilation features some of the hottest rap artists of the era, celebrating the holidays, hip-hop style. Highlights include Dana Dane’s "Dana Dane Is Coming To Town," Sweet Tee’s "Let The Jingle Bells Rock" and even the Surf MC's' "A Surf MC New Year," adding a California surfer (and, ahem, Beastie Boys rip-off) twist to the proceedings. Not to be overlooked is the classic front and back cover artwork, featuring a gift-wrapped B-Boy. It remains an essential, evergreen (pun intended) holiday album to this day.

Arising in the mid-1980s during the second wave of British psychobilly, the Frantic Flintstones was formed in Didcot, outside Oxford, by singer Chuck Harvey and former Meteors drummer Toby Griffin, who soon left. Following a debut EP on Raucous and the chart-topping A Nightmare On Nervous, with drummer Andy Celbo, the group signed to Links just as guitarist Pug Pete joined the fold. Not Christmas, their fourth for Links, is one of their most popular LPs, and rightly so, with ‘Frantic’ mutating Prince Buster’s ‘Madness’ and ‘Blue Christmas’ one of several Xmas-themed numbers. British psychobilly at its best!

Bright Eyes' Christmas Album begins with a piano, flute, ambientnoise, and musical saw-driven version of "Away in a Manger,"helping weed out casual Christmas music enjoyers, but all tootempting for the most devout of Conor Oberst's disciples,who originally learned that the warmth of the holiday season istrumped only by its potential for melancholy back in 2002 withthe original Saddle Creek release. Oberst and a small army offriends at his house proceed to jamboree through Christmasclassics like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "GodRest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem,"Clear Red Vinyl.Holiday cheer, when delivered with Oberst's trademark tremble,sounds more like a lament than it does hymns of ecclesiasticaljoy. But the spirited listener will find that the fragile, homespun,and somewhat blinkered vibe that permeates the album setsitself apart from the bog-standard, less sonically humbleofferings...

Available again. The A-side was originally recorded in 1998 and it's title has been appropriated by Stripes fans as a term to describe themselves as a group. The b-side features Meg singing an a cappella version of ''Silent Night'' coupled with Jack reading the Story of the Magi from the Bible. The whole thing is a warming, heartfelt pile of Christmas goodness...dig in!

First time vinyl release for this classic LOW holiday recording. We would suggest that few bands from an ostensibly "indie rock" background should release Christmas music, if not out of respect for the holiday or material then at least out of a sense of self-esteem. Low, however, were made for this. Their attention to musical detail combined with the heavenly vocal harmonies of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker are perfectly attuned to both traditional carols like “Silent Night” and more contemporary tunes such as “Blue Christmas.” Christmas contains a selection of seasonal songs, including four originals by the band, mostly recorded at Lowʼs 20º Below studio in Duluth, MN. “If You Were Born Today” and “Blue Christmas” were released as a 7-inch single in 1997 on the English Wurlitzer Jukebox label, while “Taking Down The Tree” is taken from a 1998 compilation of live recordings issue by the Dutch Vpro radio station.

First released in 2007, this 12-track holiday album comes to RSD Black Friday for the first time on vinyl. For the album, Cross selected his favorite Christmas standards and wrote two additional songs with long-time collaborator Rob Meurer. Guests include Michael Omartian and Kenny Edwards with strings by the Pacific Jazz Orchestra founder, Chris Walden.

Their fifth album is a little bit silly, a little bit serious. It's a record that's irreverant yet somber, full of humor and full of pathos, its twelve songs combinging the two to creat a record that truly cuts right to the bone of the human condition.
