Gab002 sees Gimme A Break Records keep things local with a rowdy EP from Leeds-based DJ and producer Beerus. Over the last six months, Beerus has demonstrated his production power through two bodacious releases on Gunfinger Food’s new sub-label, Booty Frooty Records. Fusing UK styles including hardcore, acid and jungle with US staples such as electro, juke and footwork, Beerus has established a playful sound primed for the dancefloor.

Beerus’s “9000” EP opens with a hardcore weapon which combines rave stabs with Dragon Ball samples and an acid line threatening to spiral out of control at any given moment. “Play This Shit” sees the EP take a sensual turn as Beerus channels the sounds of Chicago with an enticing juke number. “Booty Acid” follows suit, offering up a particularly self-explanatory track title: luscious electro meets 303s. “Love4U” is Beerus’s love letter to the happy hardcore scene as a thumping 4x4 bassline collides with melancholic vocals and piano lunacy. Raito, known for his work in the tech house genre and recordings on Deadmau5' Mau5trap, showcases his love for the UK bass scene with his latest EP, "Black Tracksuit." This collection of tracks draws on influences across the hardcore continuum, delivering a unique and genre-defying sound.

Fresh from DOTT’s “Puppy Luv EP” and Rudoh’s “Vinland In Space EP”, Jugaar Records is back and this time with a full-length, double-pack vinyl, and digital compilation bringing together friends from Asia and Europe. The record is testament to the healthy place the Asian electronic music landscape finds itself in and those intrepid producers who are willing to explore new scenes and sounds. It's energy-crew from the off - with UK beatmaker Joe Koshin’s “Astro Wax”, a techy electro work-out that conjures images of futuristic cityscapes and dense urban mazes. Up next, Pakistan-born and label co-boss Rudoh maintains the electro vibe with cut-up hip-hop vocals sprinkled on top of a pulsating bassline in his “kof”. His records are being picked up by global tastemakers from Emerald to Roza Terenzi to DJ Masda. Don’t sleep!

Moving to the B-side, German-born, London mainstay Voigtmann shuffles and deals a steppy drum pattern and intricate synth-work, with a bassline drenched in that particular brand of funk to get the party going even at the most ungodly hour. Observatory resident Nic Ford closes this disk with an ambient excursion that summons spiritual rave voices from the deep laid atop a lilting synth loop. It’s typical of his ambient performances which have gained much notoriety in Vietnam of late.

Opening the second record is Egyptian gem Hassan Abou Alam whose recent outings on Naïve and Banoffee Pies have gained him much and well-deserved attention. Here, his “Gloom” combines twinkling IDM modes with heavy sub bass experiments primed to stop the most idiosyncratic dancefloors in their tracks. Up on C2, the Version, 3024 and Phonica Records graduate Yak adds breaks to the equation. His “Disk Full” brings together a haunting gated synth and razor-sharp beat programming to devastating effect. Melbourne based, Salt Mines Records honcho Shedbug concludes this side with his hopeful “A Lil Piece” whose soaring synth line will hit all the right emotional chords at all the right times.

On the final side Bangkokian Chalo reminds us why he is one of the masters of this increasingly fully formed scene. His Depth Charge is a muggy dub-laden, electro jam capable of rattling the weightiest sound systems in some of the most twisted raves at the end of some of the darkest Sois. The record is completed by New Delhi linchpin and Boxout.fm resident Monophonik, whose techno/electro “Tumbi” journeys out of the night into a euphoric sunrise moment that will be setting the dancefloors alight come festival season.

In this new chapter of Lab, the two minds behind the label collaborate on a record that represents the two souls of the label. We have dark-dub pads and stabs with sharp broken beats which portray a desolating landscape of a lost future.

San Francisco based DJ and bass extraordinaire Farsight knows how to make an entrance, first bursting onto the scene with his adventurous and daring EP 'Wisdom' back in 2016. Opening track 'Triangulation' combines rolling drums with party-starting vocal samples and steady whistles, letting listeners know we're really off! The A side comes to a close with 'Leaving Las Vegas' a dubstep infused cut of choppy breaks and wide-eyed melodies. 'Lesser Light' shows Farsight's love for bass exploration; it's looming shadow pressing amongst some of the darkest corners of electronic. A unique brand of grime infused techno. 'Water Margin' delves even further, adopting a more measured pace for those heads down moments. The record comes to a close with 'Fulminous Edge' and is a reflection of the artist's darkest material. The drums still have a familiar spring in their step but the track's melodic bassline is mesmerizing; resulting in a melancholy trance that deserves a second play.

Lindenberg Support is the man behind 'Ode To Gallantry', a complex and emotional tale of mistaken identity, trust and honor. The story begins with the beggar Shi Po Tian, aka the Bastard, stealing a bun which contains the Black Iron Token, created by skilled pugilist Xie Yanke, which grants the holder one wish. 'c20/25' and its pounding and pacy rhythmics, carrying pads and heavy hitting vibe, perfectly set the journey's energetic and warm tone. Xie appears yearly, demanding that the clans repay in blood for any heinous act they committed throughout the year. The only way that a rude clan can avoid the cull is for the clan's leader to sacrifice himself for them. With 'sks (101)' and its soothing and floating pads carrying the gentle lo-fi drums, the story heats up and evolves to a deeper intricacy. Fearing that Bastard might make him promise to stop his annual harvest of death, Xie spirits him away and trains him in martial arts so powerful that he is certain it will kill him, but instead, it makes him strong and resilient. The uplifting pads in 'Gate', supported by a reckless broken beat and pinging vocals, create a celestial vibe that pushes Bastard to his limits. He is rescued by the Chang Lo Clan that mistakes him for their villainous leader Shi Zhongyu and then treats him as their boss. With each case of mistaken identity, he becomes drawn into a number of heated conflicts between several rival schools and gangs - a dilemma that he just isn't prepared to deal with. The dreamy ambiance of 'Kinda Weak' and its well-wrought drum pattern slowly shroud the memories of his old life. The final point is set with 'Pol-1 (For Stefan)' - an emotive and profound ambient piece to close the story. He's sure to learn some valuable lessons about brotherhood and honor, but at what price?

Taiwanese label JIN records enters autumn 2022, with a new promising release by South Korea’s Yetsuby. As always searching for gems in the pan-Asian domain, JIN is delighted to have Yetsuby for its latest/6th release. On this EP, one-half of the ambient duo Salamanda, Yetsuby showcases her expertise in mood setting soundscapes, taking listeners on a sound journey across a wide array of musical spectra. Opening on A1, Yetsuby reinterprets a traditional Korean folk story of a bear devouring garlic and green onions, transforming the animal into a human being. Aptly named ” Bear Becomes The Human,” she transforms the transformed, turning the bear into a buzzing modern drum & bass-fused energetic tune. It turns out garlic is a powerful source after all. B1’s “Jelly” showcases Yetsuby’s talent for stripped-back glitch music: With a minimal bass and drum pattern, the track gently muddles along and presents itself as well suited warm-up track for the earlier hours of any party. For the remix sides, Cleveland delivers a vinyl only remix of “Bear Becomes The Human” with a futuristic house tune filled with jungle like drum pattern and techy yet smooth atmosphere on A2. On B2, New Zealand’s Eden Burns takes an entirely different path on his reinterpretation of Jelly. Embarking from the original pattern, he turns the original into a slow brewing psychedelic trance cracker that seems most suited for the early morning after hours that need an energy boost.

Born October 1966. Break Dancer in 1984, under the moniker Mad Max, started a crew named the Back Street Warriors, Busking all over the UK at places such as Covent Garden/Leicester Square Performing on stage & in clubs. They once jammed with the Rock Steady Crew in Camden Palace in front of an audience.

Then in 1987 he became a DJ, playing all genres of music, he first played on RJR Radio, playing Electro, Hip Hop, Soul, R&B & Reggae. Moving forward he started playing Acid House & Four to the Floor Music styles, by the early 90s he played on Weekend Rush and then went onto Defection, Touchdown, Don & Passion FM, playing Acid & Hardcore Jungle.

In the early days MixMaster Max was one of the Innovators of Jungle music by mixing Hardcore, Reggae & Hip Hop together, helping others to produce, fuse & gain ideas in the music industry. He was by Far the most Original, Innovative, DJ anybody had ever heard.

In 1991 he played alongside John Saunderson at the Camden Palace on a Friday night, he also played at the famous Hacienda club in Manchester. He was the First DJ to create the Topsy Turvey, which is one turntable on top of the other, he came runner up in the DMC world championships in the early 90s.

He played at some of the Biggest Raves back in the day, Pirate club 93, Fantazia 92, Dungeons 91/92, Turnmills 92, to mention a few. He also played on Avenues FM & People's Choice, which were legal Radio Stations, not forgetting Kool fm & Centreforce.

He performed on stage with the We Papa Girl Rappers in 1990 at the Notting Hill Carnival. This Legendary Cult figure is a Master of the Nunchuckers & TurnTables! His innovative Mixes were ‘legendary’ he was a pioneer precursor to the Art form known as Jungle Music, not to mention his Scratching abilities, which was ‘extraordinary’!

For those that listened to pirate radio back in the day, he was the legendary cult figure that inspired us all, giving us the freshest musical styles that had never been heard before!

Club Glow co-founder Denham Audio is no stranger to linking up with friends. Running the label alongside fellow breaksmiths Mani Festo, LMajor and Borai, the rave-focused producer has established the imprint as one of a leading name in acid hooks, lairy basslines and whiplash-inducing breakbeats, and here - on Cheeky Sneakers - he readies the release of five varied cuts of lowend pressure and sky-high euphoria alongside Swankout, Thugwidow and Coco Bryce. 'Good Time' does what it says. London producer Yosh continues his hot streak of putting out a twelve inch a month with typically breaksy, UK focused EP on Distant Horizons that further earmarks the emerging artist as one of the producers to watch in 2021.

Following releases on Time Is Now and an announcement on Desert Sound Colony’s Holding Hands sub-label, Yosh serves up four steppers that navigate us from the doors of the club to front left of the speaker. ‘Don’t Say’ is a fast cut of subby breakbeat-garage; the producer’s knack for emotionally stimulating vocal samples and peak-time basslines moving into the frame.

‘All That Acid’ gives squirming acid lines and stripped-back percussion, mutating the breaksy, UK energy into something more electro focused, and in doing so provides what could be the score for an old racing video game, before ‘Choose One’ takes us back into familiar Yosh territory with a cut of dreamy garage, with the odd dubby wobble for good measure.

We finish on a personal note with ‘Home’, a cut that epitomises that good feeling that can only come with returning to a place of comfort; relaxed atmospherics and 2-step rhythms providing the perfect warm up number.

Tone Def are the original Bournemouth ravers with some absolute classics released in the early 90’s on Moving Shadow. The A1 track means a lot to me because two years ago my parents passed away within two weeks of each other due to cancer. It happened quickly between mid-August and the end of August. This was the saddest time in my life. I was struggling with myself, with the world, with everything. After a few months, I decided to translate my emotions into a song. I wrote this song for them but I was never able to finish it. It felt like I had overproduced it and was missing that special something. My good friend told me, Michael, dont think about the project for a period of time. Sometimes, something will happen when you dont expect it to. After nine months it was Christmas and we did a lets say a corona confirm dinner party. My good friend Basch invited Robert (Owens). Since Basch s mother and Robert are from the same town and maybe the same street in Detroit, they ve been connected to each other for the past 30 years! Robert came to the dinner party and it was synergy. I told him the story and about the missing elements for the song. He listened to it after dinner and said, okay where is your studio? After the Xmas dinner party, we went to my studio where we recorded the vocals. Robert did it on the fly and all friends in the studio cried tears as if there was some kind of magic in the air. Since then, we are working together on something special. It s blossomed into a friendship we both enjoy. The journey ends in London with my all-time favorite Label Fingerlickin Records. I requested a Remix from the Plump DJs and Jem Stone. Both agreed and the results are making this record unique. The Plump DJs Remix is a Uk Breakbeat-Chord-Style groove monster. Jem Stones version is an emotional journey that cannot be explained in words? Blackbox is a project from Tmplt, Robert Owens and Sebastian Sauve. What is in the Blackbox? There is no answer yet, but stay tuned. Sometimes you will find it out.

Most artists cringe when they think about their earliest productions, but as Modeselektor’s Sebastian Szary digs deeper and deeper into his archives, the clearer it becomes that even as a teenager, the man was talented beyond his years. As with his previous Fundamental Knowledge releases, “1994-3” and “1994-20” were written back when Szary was living with his parents in Berlin and making music in his bedroom, but they still sound fresh, even after sitting on a hard drive for the better part of two decades. “1994-20” is a twitchy cut that brings to mind the percolating rhythms of classic Chicago house, a sensation that’s only amplified by the track’s fiercely dueling acid lines. Szary himself admits that they “don’t want to talk to each other,” and that tension feeds into the song’s gritty bounce. Those acid lines are also what caught the attention of fellow Berlin bass champion Sarah Farina, who’s reworked the squelchy undulations of the original “1994-20” into a rousing breakbeat banger. On the flip, “1994-3” is a more experimental offering, a sort of proto-IDM track that layers warped jungle fragments atop a loping bass loop. In the hands of Substance (a.k.a. Hard Wax lifer DJ Pete, a foundation of Berlin’s electronic music scene and one of Modeselektor’s original mentors), however, the song has been transformed into a bounding house tune, its sturdy kick offset by a sashaying bassline and a barely tamed array of unruly percussive outbursts.
