Kiasmos - Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and Faroese musician Janus Rasmussen – are returning, renewed and restored, with II. The triumphant follow-up to their universally acclaimed self-titled debut in 2014, which re-envisioned minimal techno with orchestral flourishes and weightless production. They’d made most of that album in just two weeks; this time it’s been 10 years. The making of II was a test of their friendship, but also testament to how great musical chemistry can always go the distance and be just the same as it ever was.

They worked on a lot of II during the lost year of 2020-2021, including a trip to Ólafur’s studio in Bali. “We spent a month there and wrote a few songs that ended up on the record,” says Janus. The pair sampled traditional Balinese percussion like the gamelan and incorporated Janus’s field recordings of their natural surroundings – the sound of birds, crickets and, on standout track ‘Dazed’, echoing the sunrise over the lush landscape.

Kiasmos have an enviable knack for conveying complex emotions and evocative visuals with instrumental music. But this time they’ve got more experience as producers to draw on. The album’s expansiveness can be linked to Ólafur’s intervening years as a Grammy-nominated composer and prominent soundtracker in film and TV. And they’ve subtly shifted from four-to-the-floor to the frenetic broken beats of UK dance music, experimenting more with BPMs, echoing Janus’s time spent DJing in major venues worldwide. There are still those aching melodies that fans know and love but they’re catchier too: tracks like ‘Laced’ and ‘Bound’ have an irresistible, elastic bounce beneath the ethereal palette.

First Word Records is incredibly proud to bring you an exclusive vinyl-only re-issue of Takuya Kuroda's highly-sought after album 'Rising Son'.

'Rising Son' was first released on the seminal Blue Note Records imprint 10 years ago in 2014, with Takuya being the first Japanese artist to sign to the label. The record received widespread critical acclaim, hitting No.1 on Japan's jazz charts at the time, with original copies now fetching hundreds of pounds on Discogs and the like. There has long been high demand for a re-press of this album, and we're very pleased to say it's finally here, a decade on.

The re-issue is to be released via London-based Worldwide Award-winning label First Word Records, who coincidentally celebrate their 20th year running in 2024. First Word released Takuya's highly-revered previous two albums, 'Fly Moon Die Soon' (2020) and 'Midnight Crisp' (2022).

For those that don't know, Takuya Kuroda is a Kobe-born, Brooklyn-based trumpeter and musician, who was also a longtime player for Akoya Afrobeat as well as DJ Premier's Badder band. Initially playing on the Japanese circuit with his trombonist brother, Takuya went on to relocate to New York City, where he has largely remained to this day, becoming a prominent player in the jazz scene there.

The original album featured several Roy Ayers covers, including the all-time classic 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine', and this 2024 pressing also includes a brand new remix of the track from keys player & producer, Joe Armon-Jones. Joe is hugely-acclaimed in his own right as a solo artist, as well as his recent collaborations with Mala (who has a track named after him on this very project, as Takuya was influenced heavily by his 2012 Brownswood album 'Mala in Cuba'), and as an integral member of the legendary Ezra Collective, winners of the 2023 Mercury Music Prize in the UK.

Flitting between the genres of jazz fusion, soul, r&b, hip hop and afrobeat, the album was predominantly produced by a previous Takuya collaborator, vocalist José James, while also featuring phenomenal accompaniment from Nate Smith (drums), Solomon Dorsey (bass), Corey King (trombone) and Kris Bowers (keys).

In the words of José James, "no one sounds like Takuya. His tone, warmth and most of all his storytelling have inspired me for years. His writing is soulful, modern, and effortlessly bridges the gap between jazz and soul, and between history and tomorrow."

Seit Sommer 2023 versorgte der gebürtige Bremerhavener über die letzten Monate die deutschsprachige Rapwelt erneut mit monatlichen Singlereleases. Nach dem 2019er Album „Der letzte seiner Art“ und „Mein Weg“ aus dem Jahre 2022 bündelt Stylewarz diese Singles nun auf dem Album „Hall of Fame“. Blickt man auf die Tracklist, kann man sich einer Sache sicher sein: Stylewarz bleibt seiner Linie als Producer treu und pickt die gecoverten Artists nach der lieb gewonnenen Tradition „Style over Fame“.

Nach dem Intro wartet bei „Family Biz“ mit Umse bereits der erste Protagonist hinter dem Mikrophon, der dieses Castingkriterium vollständig erfüllt. Über einen von einem Streichersample getragenen Beat philosophiert Umse wiederum über die Castingkriterien seines Inner Circle, seiner Family, die mit ihm zusammen sein Rap Biz trägt. Eine Hommage an seinen Bruder, die mit der Refrainzeile „… ich habe jederzeit die allerbesten Menschen um mich!…“ im Ohr hängen bleibt.

So verwundert es dann auch nicht, dass mit Flo Mega und D-Flame zwei weitere Rapper auf diesem Album vertreten sind, die ohne weiteres zu den Best Buddies von DJ Stylewarz gezählt werden dürfen. „Wegweiser“ heißt das catchy Rootsreggaebrett und lässt die Augen von jedem Yardi leuchten. Stylewarz’ gemeinsame Gigs mit den Hamburger Reggaelegenden von Silly Walks haben hier definitiv ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Trockene Offrhythm Snares gepaart mit Hammondorgel-Sequenzen verleihen dem Hamburger Frühling einen Hauch von Kingston, während Flo Mega den Refrain im feinsten Singerstyle präsentiert.

Und während der Booty noch am Twerken ist, wartet nur einen Track später mit „Message“ eine physiotherapeutische Herausforderung für jeden Nacken. Heliocopta aka die eine Hälfte der Kölner Rapcombo Peti Free reißt ab. Zornige Punchline über einen trockenen BoomBap Beat funktionieren sowohl mit 50er Kurzhanteln in der Hand als auch in der Karre am Strip und versorgen einen mit ausreichend Energie für den Rest des Tages.
Lange her, dass „Mies, Digga!“ so auf einen Track zutraf wie hier bei „Message“!

Ähnliche Banlieus Vibes bekommt man im weiteren Verlaufs des Albums nochmal bei „Crier ou se taire“ serviert. Trocken an Pianomelodien spitten die Brüsseler Legenden CNN199 über den Beat, und auch wenn man des Französischen nicht mächtig ist, catcht einen der Flow der beiden belgischen MCs sofort und lässt den Kraftausdauertest der Nackenmuskulatur in die nächste Runde gehen.

Mit „Hall of Fame“ setzt Michael Whitelov sein nächstes musikalisches Ausrufezeichen. Ebenso vielfältig wie in seinen DJ Sets präsentiert sich der Wahlhamburger in seinen Producerskills. Von BoomBap über Reggae bis hin zu Uptemponummern ist alles dabei, was das „2 Turntables & a Mic“-Herz höherschlagen lässt. Denn auch die übrigen Trakcs wie „Fresh“ mit L.A.A.S oder „Hall of Fame - Bounce Edition“ mit Ferris MC reihen sich in dieses Album ein, das einen gute 45 Minuten euphorisch mitnicken lässt. Die Bremen-Bremerhaven Connection, die aktuell landauf, landab die Livebühnen der
Republik abreißen, hat sich hier noch eine kleine Besonderheit für ihre Fans einfallen lassen. Der HOF-Track ist ebenfalls auf Ferris’ neuem Album vertreten, hier allerdings als „Hall of Fame - Monster Edition“!

Souffle Continu records presents Byard Lancaster – The Complete Palm Recordings 1973-1974, the definitive package of Philadelphia-born jazz wizard Byard Lancaster including his 4 legendary albums released on Jef Gilson’s Palm Records in the 1970s, Us, Mother Africa, Exactement and Funny Funky Rib Crib, along with the first ever standalone edition of Love Always, a fifteen minute modal jazz beauty plus a 20 page booklet with rare photos and in-depth article about Byard Lancaster’s Parisian years by Pierre Crépon.

At the beginning of the 1960s, at the Berklee College of Music, Byard Lancaster met some feisty friends: Sonny Sharrock, Dave Burrell and Ted Daniel. It is easy to see why he rapidly became involved in free jazz. Once he was settled in New York, he appeared on Sunny Murray Quintet, recorded under the leadership of the drum crazy colleague of Albert Ayler.

In 1968, the saxophonist and flutist recorded his first album under his own name: It’s Not Up To Us. The following year he came to Paris in the wake of... Sunny Murray. He would come back to France in 1971 (again with Murray) and in 1973 (without Murray for a change). This is when he met Jef Gilson, the pianist and producer who encouraged him to record under his own name again. On Palm Records (Gilson’s label), he would release four albums: Us, Mother Africa, Exactement and Funny Funky Rib Crib.

“Us”, the first of the four records was recorded on November 24th, 1973 with Sylvin Marc on electric bass (a Fender... Lancaster?) and the evergreen Steve McCall on drums.

On the album, the trio works from the John Coltrane model; free jazz shook up by the timely contributions of the bassist, followed by a mesmerizing atmospheric music. Then, Lancaster delivers a sinuous solo path, which is a reminder of his unique tone. On the album’s companion single, the trio launches into great black music of a different genre which would lead the clairvoyant François Tusques to claim that Byard Lancaster is an “authentic representative of soul/free jazz”, to sum up this is Great Black Music! A few months after recording “Us”, Lancaster recorded “Mother Africa” along with Clint Jackson III, a trumpeter, partner of Khan Jamal or Noah Howard on other recordings.

On march 8th, 1974, Lancaster and Jackson headed up a group composed of Jean-François Catoire (electric and double bass), Keno Speller (percussion) and Jonathan Dickinson (drums). Together, they create an immediate impression. From the first seconds of “We The Blessed”, they develop a free jazz which rapidly abandons any virulence under the effect of blues and soul based interventions. When Gilson’s composition “Mother Africa” begins, listeners are transported into the studio, listening to the musicians setting up: chatting and joking... Then comes the melody: a dozen or so notes of a repeated theme which is accelerated and deformed according to their whims... The jazz played by the association Byard Lancaster / Clint Jackson III is rare: creative AND recreational. “We the blessed”, is apt listening to this again today!

The recording of “Exactement” required two sessions in the studio: February 1st and May 18th 1974 – in between the two dates, Lancaster recorded, alongside Clint Jackson, the excellent Mother Africa.

Two names appear on the cover of “Exactement”: Lancaster (Byard) and Speller (Keno). Byard Lancaster wanted to be precise, moving regularly from one instrument to another: first on piano, which was the first instrument he learned. On “Sweet Evil Miss Kisianga”, his inspiration is first and foremost Coltrane (even if leaning more towards Alice than John), this announces the storm to follow.

It is Lancaster’s horn-playing which really stands out: on alto (the sound of which is transformed by an octavoice on one track, "Dr. Oliver W. Lancaster") or soprano saxophones, as well as on flute or bass clarinet, the musician walks a tightrope making the most of all the risks he takes. Using the full register of his instruments, he has fun with the possibilities.

Then, Lancaster invokes or evokes Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy and even Prokofiev, before going into a danse alongside Keno Speller on percussion. Above all, he has a unique sound. Byard Lancaster, on whatever instrument he plays and by continually seeking, always ends up hitting the right note... ends up by playing exactement the note he had to play.

“Funny Funky Rib Crib” is an unforgettable recording (made up of several sessions dating from the middle of 1974) of creative jazz overwhelmed by funk and soul. If Lancaster had already made successful albums in the same genre – notably New Horizons, under the name Sounds Of Liberation which he co-led with Khan Jamal –, this one is an homage to James Brown and Sammy Davis enjoying the company of a host of guests including François Tusques (electric piano), Clint Jackson III (trumpet), François Nyombo (guitar), Joseph Traindl (trombone)...

Funny Funky Rib Crib’s cover is a three-quarter profile portrait of the saxophonist (who can also be heard on flute, piano and even vocals), however, on the record, it is the whole group, inspired and frenetic, that tests the melodies of “Just Test”, “Dogtown” or “Rib Crib” – the two versions of which display leader Lancaster’s art of nuance. On both sides of the album, the group also moves into a calmer groove, infused by blues and soul, “Work And Pray” and “Loving Kindness” are meditative tracks where listeners can lay back and relax before asking for more: Funny Funky Rib Crib!

The magnificent “Love Always” was originally released on the fourth (and last) volume of the Jef Gilson Anthology series released in 1975. Recorded on 8th March 1974, it is a beautiful 15-minute-long modal jazz piece. Four notes from the bass (the relentless Jean-François Catoire, who makes up the rhythm section alongside drummer Jonathan Dickinson and percussionist Keno Speller), and the group is up and running! On piano, Gilson shows the subtle tact of a sideman, leaving the lions’ share of the place to the horns. This allows us to hear the trumpet of Clint Jackson III and the alto (which sometimes sounds almost flute-like) of Byard Lancaster each staking their claim in a long hallucinatory march which moves from moments of direct exaltation to profoundly sensitive collective playing. And if further proof was required of the confidence that Byard Lancaster and Jef Gilson inspire, “Love Always” provides it on this one sided release exclusive to the box set.

Per Ethan Buckler (Slint bassist on tweez), "Finally - after thirty-five long years - the other guys in Slint decided to be nice to me and let me have my Tweez remix. I complained incessantly back in the day about how the Albini production style ruined our first recording." In 2023, Ethan took the original multi-track recordings to a local studio in Louisville. The album came out during a pivotal moment in global discussions about race, equality, and justice, particularly following the murder of George Floyd and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement. Untitled (Black Is) blends a wide array of genres, including soul, R&B, Afrobeat, funk, spoken word, and gospel, creating a sound that feels both timeless and contemporary. While it directly addresses the oppression and violence faced by Black people, it also offers moments of joy, strength, and affirmation. The album is a call for action, but also for love and understanding.

As with previous releases, Sault maintained their air of mystery with Untitled (Black Is), releasing the album without much fanfare or explanation about the contributors. However, it's widely speculated that key figures like Inflo, Cleo Sol, and Kid Sister played significant roles in its creation. The album's timing and thematic focus made it especially impactful, with its messages resonating deeply during a time of global reflection on race and justice.

Thanks to the diverse stacking options, individual record furniture such as sideboards, record shelves, DJ racks and more can be created in combination with other storage boxes, register boxes and add-ons.

The 7-inch 110 storage box, like the other boxes in the Record Box system, is made of robust MDF and has a resistant surface made of melamine resin. An innovative glue dot system was developed to connect the boxes. All glue dots are attached to the connection points according to the instructions and can easily be removed without leaving any residue.

Objekt launches his new label, Kapsela, with a 10-year anniversary reissue of his lauded production ‘Ganzfeld’. An ambitious, evocative electro/IDM epic with cavernous drums and a riotously funky bass solo, Ganzfeld was initially released in 2014 on Leisure System as the B-side of Hypnagogia, a split EP with Detroit electro pioneers Dopplereffekt. It quickly garnered critical acclaim (including Track Of The Year by Resident Advisor) and amassed a cult following despite clocking in at 147bpm, a relatively unwieldy tempo for most DJs at the time. Given the seismic shifts in tempo and genre that have taken place in the 10 years since and the emergence of a new generation of producers with whom Ganzfeld’s influence has resonated, 2024 seemed like the perfect moment for a re-release. Commissioning remixes for the first time, Objekt enlists Djrum, who delivers a jaw-dropping 10-minute rendition which weaves through multiple genres and tempos with the cinematic flair of a short film score. Milan’s Piezo contributes a taut, prickly interpretation that builds tension at 80bpm before exploding into a cathartic double-time closer. Finally, US ambient artist Ulla fully deconstructs the original into a serene, undulating lullaby. The vinyl comes with a free lossless download. On Ol' Burger Beats' new albumWelcome 2 Norway, the Norwegian beatmaker delves into Norway's rich music history and has created a record that might be his most accomplished to date. On the best beat tapes throughout history, a story is told through the samples used, and this is truly the case with Ol' Burger Beats' new album, his first on Jansen Records. Norwegian Ol' Burger Beats (Ole-Birger Neergård) has been a mainstay on the international beats scene ever since his debut album High Rhodes was released in 2014. On that record we were introduced to the Oslo-based producer, DJ, and record collector's ability to create magic from old jazz and soul records. On Welcome 2 Norway, he re-discovers many national treasure, both well-known and forgotten ones. Among other things, he has had free access to the catalog of the legendary Arne Bendiksen's old record label, he’s sampled songs by Norwegian greats Jan Erik Vold, Kåre Virud, and Åse Kleveland, and chopped and pasted forgotten ballads from old-time dance bands, along with some Christian gems from dusty basements. The result is a record that both showcases the venerable history of Norwegian music, and also highlights Ol' Burger Beats' ability to create fantastic instrumental hip-hop tunes from old and dusty classics. The last albums by J Dilla might be the biggest inspiration for this album and are good examples of storytelling through sampling. The title Welcome 2 Norway also refers to Welcome 2 Detroit, a Dilla album that introduced the listener to the various musical styles in Dilla's hometown. In addition to delivering brilliant solo albums in rapid succession, he is also keen to collaborate with other artists on different levels. There are projects where he is the producer–Mind Games from 2017 and Out of Sight, Out of Mind from 2018 – where he works with some of his favorite rappers like Quelle Chris, Pink Siifu, Fly Anakin, Maxo, and Illa J. But then we also have the magical Loft from 2022, where the12 tracks explores the world of jazz together with other jazz enthusiasts like Ralph Thomas and Wendell Harrison, and the very successful albums with the Norwegian rapper Vuyo–All Yours from 2020 and Dialogue from 2021 When talking about the new album, Welcome 2 Norway, Neergård himself says: «After doing a few collaborations with rappers that’ve dragged out a bit, with more emailing and coordinating than music production, this has been an album where I've banged out a lot of beats, and just had some fun again. The samples I've used tell stories from my life over the past few years, and I've been searching for a Norwegian sound reminiscent of the typical soul and jazz samples found in American hip-hop–and I think the result turned out quite unique!»

Being Punk and Hippie at the same time. Les Rythmes Ruban experiment with the idea by doing absolutely what they want, but with love. Moving forward with enthusiastic trial and error has the double advantage of enjoying the scenery and easily crossing paths with people we love. The first encounter between Marina P and Blundetto took place in 2014 with their collaboration on the track "Last Broken Bones" from the album "World Of". Marina, who had just created her label Homeys Records, continues to multiply experiences on stage and in the studio, solo or always well accompanied (Mungo's Hi-Fi, Stand High Patrol, Woman Hi-Fi with Biga*Ranx, Jahtari...). But Marina's spectrum of influences goes far beyond reggae, drawing from the jazz sound of her parent's record player, her cello practice, and the discovery of great voices of Soul and Jazz like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker... The track "Eugenio", written and composed by Marina, embodies all of this; it belongs to no particular style. It's primarily the evident essence of the song, its lyrics, and its emotion that inspired Blundetto to "set it to music", available to your ears in two different arrangements.

We discovered Suncream’s "Laguna Azur" already years ago through our friend Pia and kept playing it in our sets since then, which caused almost ridiculous amounts of ID-requests from audiences all over Europe. So when Ly and Nic agreed on working together on a physical release, we knew this is gonna be something special.

While the Original Laguna Azur Mix takes you on a motorcycle trip to a beach bar sipping cocktails in the early 90s (with denim jackets, cocktail umbrellas and the full program), Jalusi's Acid Dub is already starting the party, when the dubby bass hits like we wanna dance into the sunset, watching smiles on everyones faces, rumpled hair from the early evening breeze. 2AM – was it Hazme Sonar or Sueno Latino or the Balearic Eric & Nic Jalusi Dream House Mix – You’re in a sea of hands up in the air when those piano chords kick in after the break. You just want to dive into the ocean for another night swim and shake your drenched body on the sandy dancefloor. A handful of friends remain at the beach in the very moment when the sun comes up and you’ll hear the hypnotizing leftfield dub "My Heart“, lying on the shore, everyone’s eyes turn into the greenish-blue color of a mystical lagoon hidden in the palm forest.
