Infectious rock&roll, surf, beat, girl group and ye-yé sounds by LAS Mosquitas, the first female beat band from Argentina.

Including their rare album from 1965 for the Music Hall label plus bonus tracks from singles and their impossible to find split EP with Los Gatos Salvajes.

Las Mosquitas (“The Little Flies”) consisted of Stella Maris Conde (Pupé) on vocals and guitar, María Cristina Medina (Nita) on bass, Ana María Millán (Nené) on vocals and guitar and Beatriz Cabrera (Dina) on drums. They performed their original compositions as well as Spanish sung covers of hits from the era. Producer Ricardo Romero of pioneering rock&roll Argentinean band Los Cinco Latinos took them under his wing and secured a deal with the Music Hall label.

They toured nationally and internationally, sometimes supporting Los Cinco Latinos, other times as the main act. Not only that, but they conquered every city they performed in, they were received by fans, ambassadors, presidents and their daughters, all eager to see Las Mosquitas on stage. Tours through Panamá, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Puerto Rico, Chile, Uruguay, Brasil, Curazao and Argentina were completed with fantastic public response and TV appearances.

The “Mosquitamania” was born and a string of singles and a full album on the Music Hall label followed. All of them are compiled here for the first time.

Souffle Continu records presents Byard Lancaster – The Complete Palm Recordings 1973-1974, the definitive package of Philadelphia-born jazz wizard Byard Lancaster including his 4 legendary albums released on Jef Gilson’s Palm Records in the 1970s, Us, Mother Africa, Exactement and Funny Funky Rib Crib, along with the first ever standalone edition of Love Always, a fifteen minute modal jazz beauty plus a 20 page booklet with rare photos and in-depth article about Byard Lancaster’s Parisian years by Pierre Crépon.

At the beginning of the 1960s, at the Berklee College of Music, Byard Lancaster met some feisty friends: Sonny Sharrock, Dave Burrell and Ted Daniel. It is easy to see why he rapidly became involved in free jazz. Once he was settled in New York, he appeared on Sunny Murray Quintet, recorded under the leadership of the drum crazy colleague of Albert Ayler.

In 1968, the saxophonist and flutist recorded his first album under his own name: It’s Not Up To Us. The following year he came to Paris in the wake of... Sunny Murray. He would come back to France in 1971 (again with Murray) and in 1973 (without Murray for a change). This is when he met Jef Gilson, the pianist and producer who encouraged him to record under his own name again. On Palm Records (Gilson’s label), he would release four albums: Us, Mother Africa, Exactement and Funny Funky Rib Crib.

“Us”, the first of the four records was recorded on November 24th, 1973 with Sylvin Marc on electric bass (a Fender... Lancaster?) and the evergreen Steve McCall on drums.

On the album, the trio works from the John Coltrane model; free jazz shook up by the timely contributions of the bassist, followed by a mesmerizing atmospheric music. Then, Lancaster delivers a sinuous solo path, which is a reminder of his unique tone. On the album’s companion single, the trio launches into great black music of a different genre which would lead the clairvoyant François Tusques to claim that Byard Lancaster is an “authentic representative of soul/free jazz”, to sum up this is Great Black Music! A few months after recording “Us”, Lancaster recorded “Mother Africa” along with Clint Jackson III, a trumpeter, partner of Khan Jamal or Noah Howard on other recordings.

On march 8th, 1974, Lancaster and Jackson headed up a group composed of Jean-François Catoire (electric and double bass), Keno Speller (percussion) and Jonathan Dickinson (drums). Together, they create an immediate impression. From the first seconds of “We The Blessed”, they develop a free jazz which rapidly abandons any virulence under the effect of blues and soul based interventions. When Gilson’s composition “Mother Africa” begins, listeners are transported into the studio, listening to the musicians setting up: chatting and joking... Then comes the melody: a dozen or so notes of a repeated theme which is accelerated and deformed according to their whims... The jazz played by the association Byard Lancaster / Clint Jackson III is rare: creative AND recreational. “We the blessed”, is apt listening to this again today!

The recording of “Exactement” required two sessions in the studio: February 1st and May 18th 1974 – in between the two dates, Lancaster recorded, alongside Clint Jackson, the excellent Mother Africa.

Two names appear on the cover of “Exactement”: Lancaster (Byard) and Speller (Keno). Byard Lancaster wanted to be precise, moving regularly from one instrument to another: first on piano, which was the first instrument he learned. On “Sweet Evil Miss Kisianga”, his inspiration is first and foremost Coltrane (even if leaning more towards Alice than John), this announces the storm to follow.

It is Lancaster’s horn-playing which really stands out: on alto (the sound of which is transformed by an octavoice on one track, "Dr. Oliver W. Lancaster") or soprano saxophones, as well as on flute or bass clarinet, the musician walks a tightrope making the most of all the risks he takes. Using the full register of his instruments, he has fun with the possibilities.

Then, Lancaster invokes or evokes Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy and even Prokofiev, before going into a danse alongside Keno Speller on percussion. Above all, he has a unique sound. Byard Lancaster, on whatever instrument he plays and by continually seeking, always ends up hitting the right note... ends up by playing exactement the note he had to play.

“Funny Funky Rib Crib” is an unforgettable recording (made up of several sessions dating from the middle of 1974) of creative jazz overwhelmed by funk and soul. If Lancaster had already made successful albums in the same genre – notably New Horizons, under the name Sounds Of Liberation which he co-led with Khan Jamal –, this one is an homage to James Brown and Sammy Davis enjoying the company of a host of guests including François Tusques (electric piano), Clint Jackson III (trumpet), François Nyombo (guitar), Joseph Traindl (trombone)...

Funny Funky Rib Crib’s cover is a three-quarter profile portrait of the saxophonist (who can also be heard on flute, piano and even vocals), however, on the record, it is the whole group, inspired and frenetic, that tests the melodies of “Just Test”, “Dogtown” or “Rib Crib” – the two versions of which display leader Lancaster’s art of nuance. On both sides of the album, the group also moves into a calmer groove, infused by blues and soul, “Work And Pray” and “Loving Kindness” are meditative tracks where listeners can lay back and relax before asking for more: Funny Funky Rib Crib!

The magnificent “Love Always” was originally released on the fourth (and last) volume of the Jef Gilson Anthology series released in 1975. Recorded on 8th March 1974, it is a beautiful 15-minute-long modal jazz piece. Four notes from the bass (the relentless Jean-François Catoire, who makes up the rhythm section alongside drummer Jonathan Dickinson and percussionist Keno Speller), and the group is up and running! On piano, Gilson shows the subtle tact of a sideman, leaving the lions’ share of the place to the horns. This allows us to hear the trumpet of Clint Jackson III and the alto (which sometimes sounds almost flute-like) of Byard Lancaster each staking their claim in a long hallucinatory march which moves from moments of direct exaltation to profoundly sensitive collective playing. And if further proof was required of the confidence that Byard Lancaster and Jef Gilson inspire, “Love Always” provides it on this one sided release exclusive to the box set.

Formed in the Fall of 1991 by Brandon Capps (guitar & vocals), Kimber Lanning (drums), and Tim Patterson (bass), HALF STRING created a lush, guitar-driven brand of noise pop. Their sound was an antidote to the "desert jangle" bar band scene that dominated Tempe, Arizona at the time. While the group shared an aesthetic with much of the British shoegaze scene, and occasionally recalled the spirit of early 4AD and Factory Records, they certainly carved out a beautiful noise of their own. During their austere six-year life, half string inspired an underground music scene in their hometown, and gained a small but loyal following from beyond the desert. HALF STRING's first demo was hand delivered to Independent Project Records' Bruce Licher during the summer of 1992. Impressed, Licher released the three songs as the Eclipse 7" single on his revered post-punk fine art imprint. Matt Kruse joined on second guitar in 1993, adding another layer of texture andintricate melody to the band's broadening sound. This was evident on "Oval", HALF STRING's second single, and the subsequent "Tripped Up Breathing" EP, both released by IPR in 1994. Patterson left the band that winter, and was replaced by Dave Rogers, a multi-instrumentalist who added backing vocals. In 1995, Germany's Pop Goes On...

Sometimes the best bands are just out in the world - waiting for you to discover them. Mirrorism formed nary a year ago in Ferrara, Italy & posted up some songs from their self-released cassette onto a message board late last year. The band's TiM debut snags two tunes from that blast of hot air & slaps 'em onto wax - where they belong! In their own words, Mirrorism are: "a philosophical, artistic and political movement based on chaos, disunity, multiple personality disorder and the refusal to make sense of any kind of artistic output." One gets a very real sense of the chaos lurking beneath these jagged stabs of post-punk fury - "Night Flight" kicks of the A-side with a rhythmic ticking of the drums, perhaps a warning of the musical time bomb about to explode thru your speakers! "Psychic Welfare" was produced by Pink Skull and Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, War On Drugs) between the band's Philadelphia studio and Brooklyn, NY. Contending with the seismic swells in both the macro and micro worlds around him, Grefe refracted the polluted waves in a fantastical fit to write the 13 songs of "Psychic Welfare". The album is a map of time and space portals in which the listener can navigate from the corroded corners of machinated life to boundless, amorphous space in mere seconds. Across the album's pull-out poster artwork for "Psychic Welfare" is a hand-scrawled poem by the late NYC sage Ira Cohen entitled "Blind Assemblage". In the poem, Cohen describes the decay of society and struggles to find civility within tragedy, a sentiment mirrored in Grefe's lyrical content of Psychic Welfare, if not masked by a new found pop propensity. The lead track on the album, "Hot Bubblegum," a Television-inspired piece of pop perfectly pushes this dichotomy of psychotic playfulness. "Mu" is a sprawling instrumental spread of blissed-out 80s funk, complete with a tin rooftop sax solo by Billy Dufala (Man Man). "Janine Aubergine" fictionalizes Grefe's girlfriend's bluegrass fiddle-playing aunt as a psychedelic maven over a tango groover, while "Bee Nose (Put Yr Face On)" is a woozy, hazy late-night phone call from the warped Scottish countryside circa 1998. "Summer Reading" feels like a Transformer-era Lou Reed bullying Mark E. Smith around a disco bouncey castle. Tracks from Psychic Welfare were remixed by Brassica, Higamos Hagamos, Ray Mang, and Worst Friends. Each of these remixes will be released as single support and included alongside additional original tracks as bonus downloads. The artwork of Psychic Welfare is taken from a a series of visual synth feedback experiments conducted by the band and video artist Adam Carrigan. The LP edition features a 48" x 96" heavy-stock pull out poster.

DUNES are a mysteriously ethereal and minimal trio from Los Angeles. Appropriating pop and experimental music into a familiar swirl, while retaining a fresh outlook and approach, DUNES inhabit a space of tweaking, twisting, imagining moments and emotions from the past, destined to end up as their future. Stephanie Chan, formerly of Austin Texas bands FINALLY PUNK and THE CARROTS plays guitar and sings in DUNES, she creates surreal and dreamy narratives with her lyrics and uniquely beautiful, powerful voice. Mark Greshowak plays barritone guitar and sometimes bass, he used to write songs and tour with seattle area band TALBOT TAGORA, now he and Stephanie weave their melodies back and forth, making lush tones for our eardums. Kate Hall, played drums in MIKA MIKO before holding down the rhythmic duties and also singing for DUNES. Inspired by Bollywood, a trip to Morocco, and SergeGainsbourg, Angelo Spencer's second full-length WorldGarage [KLP235] brings armloads of new instruments and theflavor of exotic locations to a compilation of songs that amount to more than just an album, but an experience of wildness. Hearing Spencer transition from English to French, from guitar to hand percussion, and from soft singing to autotuned screaming, it's easy to close your eyes and imagine that you're running barefoot through the soft grass of, somewhere. "With the obvious homage the name implies, you'd expect Hanoi Janes to be a group of riot grrrl angnsty types, displaced in time by about 20 odd years. Having taken on the nickname given to Jane Fonda in the 70s because of her anti-war stance on Vietnam, these girls would be all bent up about, well you know, stuff. You'd expect that, but you'd be wrong. It is in fact primarily the work of one guy from Sachen, Germany - Oliver Scharf. But then Hanoi Janes' album, 'Year of Panic', is able to inspire all kinds of misconceptions. Name of the band aside, would you expect a German guy (who's a bit handy with an eight-track) to produce a series of beautifully lo-fi, sub two-minute, surf-pop tracks, full of buzzing guitar and bubblegum spirit. Maybe - maybe not. But that's just what Scharf has done. The sound is distinctly garage, reminiscent of a 70s surf sound, and like The 5. 6. 7. 8's, Hanoi Janes are able to launch into the genre with the luxury of being removed from the scene itself. Tracks like opener, 'The Boys Are Out' and 'Beach Kids' are unashamedly infectious, utilising catchy hooks, hand claps and the odd 'Ooo ooo ooo' to great effect. The production is fuzzy, but that only adds to the overall charm of the album. Because charming is what it is, as Hanoi Janes have packed 'Year of Panic' with some real gems. 'Summer of Panic' offers something tinted with psychedelic sounds; 'Our Lives' could have been an early track by The Strokes had they been influenced by the Californian sun rather than the New York shadows; 'Good Bone' is a track which can only be performed if there are several oversized surf-boards nearby. 'Year of Panic' is lo-fi, scuzzy garage surf-pop at its finest and it deserves to be the sound-track of your summer" -BOWLEGS, UK

Following an EP on Constellation in 2006, this is the first full-length recording by Sandro Perri under his own name. Working with some of Toronto's finest avant and improv players, Sandro fully re-invented himself as a singer, lyricist and guitar player, and Tiny Mirrors was the culmination of this transformation - a highly personal collection of songs, shaped by an utterly original approach to composition, performance, and melodic and vocal phrasing. It incorporates elements and sensibilities - albeit in subtle hues - as diverse as Vanguard-era Skip James (and his weary falsetto), post-tropicalia Caetano Veloso (the compositional twists), and the 60s-era axis of hybrid songwriters like Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin, Harry Nilsson and Fred Neil (whose "Everybody's Talkin'" is covered here, re-cast as a rumination on the 'epidemic' of second-hand experience). Perri's simultaneous guitar and kick drum playing is complemented by the cracked wah guitar of labelmate Eric Chenaux on several tracks, with brass, reeds, woodwinds, keys and percussion filling out the arrangements, courtesy of regular bandmates Ryan Driver, Marcus Quin and John Jowett. A handful of other Toronto players contribute on drums, trombone and cello.

180g Vinyl!This first collection of material recorded and assembled by Re: comprises 11 songs culled and coaxed from an unruly pile of 4-track cassette and DAT recordings made by (then) Boston-based Aden Evens and Montrealer Ian Ilavsky (Sofa, Silver Mt. Zion) during the late 90s. Mnant is an album of remaindered and recuperated sounds, densely layered, treated, filtered and mangled on computer. It is electronic music full of impurities, pulled from an archive of live performance and incidental field recording, guided by no rules beyond an attempt to make the right move at every turn, letting one loop or sound fragment suggest the next in an additive process that took three years of cross-border visits to realise. The result is a highly original series of tracks that defies easy categorisation and sits as comfortably alongside the work of This Heat or Village Of Savoonga as it does anything labeled 'electronica'. Beats are sometimes overt, sometimes implied, and the whole is like an entire city sampled and summoned in sound.

180g Vinyl!This 3-song EP of fractured, tape-infested experiments is an intransigent slab of self-referential auto-criticism. The band was sticking to its agenda of acutely self-conscious musical manipulations, re-working its own materials and assumptions to yield new compositions of uncompromising formalism. Side A is a medley of sorts, consisting of phrases and fragments reconfigured and replayed from their self-titled debut (Fly Pan Am). Various melodies are reassembled and played off of one another, creating an extended live remix with blissful passages of layered guitars, drones, sampled backing vocal lines, and the requisite incidental noise break in the middle of the piece. The result is something like a 'Stars On 45'-style musical encapsulation of the entire debut record. Side B contains a new piece of somnambulist clockwork repetition, with the band laying down a strict, static groove while various tape manipulations penetrate the mix to create polyrhythms, dissonances and additional textures. 180g Vinyl!Feu Therese caught spark from the embers of Fly Pan Am's break-up in 2005, when FPA guitarist Jonathan Parant joined forces with longtime collaborators Alex St-Onge (bass, electronics) and Stephen de Oliveira (synths, voice) to form the group. Painter turned drummer Luc Paradis completed the new line-up. Their debut self-titled album, released on Constellation in spring 2006, expanded on FPA's sonic agenda, while relying more on instumental juxtapositions - rather than electronic interventions or intentional sabotage at the mixing desk - to hijack the music. The Feu Thérèse mandate of knitting critical and non-conformist elements right into their song structures, instead of having these 'collide' with the music as if from outside, has reached a new level of bizarre sublimation on their new record.

180g Vinyl!The self-titled debut album by Exhaust was recorded to 3- and 4-track at the original Hotel2Tango and Mom and Pop Sounds in 1997. Originally a vinyl-only release in 1998, Constellation also issued it on CD in 2000. Anchored by drummer Aidan Girt (later drafted by GY!BE), Exhaust tore up live rooms around Montreal with Gordon Krieger's deafening bass moans and Mike Zabinski's live reel-to-reel tape distortions carving out a dub-punk racket. Exhaust captures this, along with Krieger's bass clarinet work and 8-bit remixes by 1-Speed Bike (the first recorded appearance of Aidan's DJ alter ego). A bipolar depth charge from one of the bands that made us want to start a record label.

180g Vinyl!With this debut recording, Elizabeth Anka Vajagic sets her vocals against a backdrop led by ragged guitars, moving from harrowing, dry-as-a-bone intimacy ("With Hopes Lost", "Iceland") to reverb-soaked torch-song balladry ("Around Here", "Sleep With Dried Up Tears"), and the odd explosive noise freak-out along the way ("Where You Wonder"). Vajagic's voice and lyrics are uniquely powerful, able to move across a considerable range while remaining guttural, unflinching and honest as hell. Through much cross-pollination with the local noise/improv scene, Elizabeth assembled a fine cast of players to add textures and arrangements to the seven tracks on this record, making for an intense cycle of songs peppered with skittering drums, contrebasse, cello, harmonium, piano, bowed cymbals, and oud. Guest players include Chris Burns and Simon Fazakerly (Crackpot) on guitars, Beckie Foon (Silver Mt. Zion, Esmerine) on cello, Michel Langevin (Voivod) on drums, Fluffy Erskine (Molasses, Hrsta) on musical saw, Sam Shalabi (Land Of Kush) on oud and Efrim (GYBE, SMZ) on piano, harmonium, guitar and backing vocals. The album was recorded by Howard Bilerman at the original Hotel2Tango in Montreal.
