Recently championed by Ethio-Jazz legend Mulatu Astatke on his Addis Abbaba radio show, The Sorcerers take influences from Ethiopiques Ethio-jazz as well as the soundtracks to the european horror films of the 60's and 70's and the british library music of the same era & blend them into one cohesive package. Made up of various stalwarts of the vibrant Leeds Jazz/World scene they were originally formed to contribute some tracks to the compilation "Funk, Soul & Afro Rarities: An Introduction To ATA Records" released in 2014 on Here & Now Records. After receiving a favourable response to their contributed tracks and garnering support from the likes of Strut records founder Quinton Scott and Radio 3's Nick Luscombe (Late Junction) they decided to develop their sound further before recording their debut album.

Fiddlehead wasn't supposed to make a second record. But, if we're being totally honest, they weren't supposed to make their first record either. Formed in what singer Pat Flynn describes as "a deeply, deeply, laughably depressing part of my life," Fiddlehead was born with modest intentions. Flynn and his then-roommate, guitarist Alex Dow, decided to work on some songs, and with Basement having just broken up, guitarist Alex Henery entered the fold. Drummer Shawn Costa and bassist Adam Gonsalves_who has since been replaced by Casey Nealon_linked up with them and, all together, they wrote what would become the Out Of The Bloom EP. Those five songs established what Fiddlehead would be, a band that merged elements of post-hardcore, post-punk, and classic '80s emo into something that felt distinctly theirs. After the release of their debut album Springtime & Blind, the band did some weekend-long tours, and saw that their music was hitting people harder than they ever expected. "Kids were singing along in a very desperate way and we realized it wasn't just resonating with us, it was resonating with these people in a really meaningful way," says Flynn. Springtime & Blind was a hit for many reasons, but chief among them was Flynn's open-hearted exploration of his father's passing, which saw him use his lyrics as a means of relating to and understanding his mother's grief. So when it came time for Fiddlehead to work on a second record, people weren't just curious what the songs would sound like, they were curious what they'd even be about. Between The Richness effectively picks up where Springtime & Blind left off, as Flynn dives headfirst into that same subject. But astute listeners will notice a major difference this time: Flynn is singing about himself. "These massive things happened in my life between the first record and this record. There's an ordeal that underpins Low Life's 'Dogging,' and looking back at it, perhaps this was inevitable given the album's exceptionally derogatory attitude to its own scattered sense of time and debris. It's an attitude that's been hosed down in bore water-stained stupor, with all the anguished but forgivable hope and charm of plain packaged cigarettes. 'Dogging' crawled into the world desperately and painfully. Originally slated for release on Brisbane's singular Negative Guest List Records in 2012, the label's owner sadly passed away before it got there. It eventually emerged two years later as a split between two labels from the band's home turf of Sydney, Disinfect Records and R.I.P. Society. It's fitting that the latter had reissued Venom P. Stinger's Dugald McKenzie-era material the year prior-arguably the only other Australian band that compares to the tough, shit-kicking intensity found on 'Dogging.' Comprised of Mitch Tolman, Cristian O'Sullivan, and Greg Alfaro at this point (the current 2017 line-up includes Dizzy from Oily Boys), the reckless ferocity and defeatist's humour is pointedly nihilistic. It's not kitsch nihilism either, it's the kind that enlivens. Indexing happiness, fear, lust, grief, and sorrow, the wry indulgences outlined in Tolman's coded and scheming lyrics amount to white-knuckle sincerity. It's disarming, but it's blunted by a weighty smirk. If all this weren't delivered through a sardonic curled lip, the violence at the edge of it all would perhaps come off a little less real. There's a bitterly angry confrontation with the contemporary Australian psyche once you enter Low Life's estate. Thugged out and at pace, there's a genuine rush to 'Dogging.' The mindless logic of 'harder and faster' could never get you to where they were at this point. Even at the marginally calmer moments the guitars glance you like a headache rev...

Limited Black vinyl repress (500 copies)!The lead singer and main songwriter of Cindy, Karina Gill, started the group after picking up a guitar and singing for the first time in 2016. The project went on to release an eponymous, self-produced debut album in 2018. Returning the same rhythm section and adding a dedicated keyboardist, Cindy's second album, Free Advice, showcases the group's unusual amalgam of indie pop and dedicated slowcore inspirations. The 11-track, 36-minute set goes by quickly but also languidly with mostly plodding tempos alongside vocals that come across like half-spoken, distracted thoughts. At the same time, many of the band's tunes have the hooks and slogans of classic indie pop -- if accidentally played at a too-slow rpm. Opening track "Discount Lawyer," for instance, features churning guitar and a rhythmically syncopated melody that delivers lines like "You sound tonight/Like a discount lawyer/Talk is cheap/You can trust me on that/'Cause the bill when it comes/It's got my name on it" as if underwater. The singer/guitarist is also joined on the song by humming keys, a spare tambourine or hi-hat, and measure-marking bass drum that occasionally expands to full, muffled kit. Much of the album continues in kind -- subtly catchy and half asleep -- with exceptions coming in the form of tracks like the brisk and fuzzy "Wrong Answer," which embraces a hazy, uptempo punk, and the strummy, shaker-accompanied "Falcon Heavy." Standout entry "A Song in French" falls somewhere in between those and the rest, with its midtempo wistfulness and Casio-type keyboard line clearly indicating heartbreak for those who can't translate. Attractively gloomy and ramshackle, Free Advice's reticent pop disarms much more often than not. - allmusic.com

Ms. Mazzacane, who was active on the opera stage from 1947 through the 1970’s, playing leading roles in Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Amahl and the Night Visitors and other works, left no commercial recordings. Inspired in equal parts by fatherhood, nature and quietude, 'Slither, Soar and Disappear' was born on Josh Kimbrough's back porch in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as his young son rested, where the bucolic intimacy of the natural world found its way into his nylon and steel string guitar playing, resulting in this cycle of beautiful compositions. Accompanied by a roster of talented musicians, Josh's guitar work is accompanied and complimented by banjo, flute, strings, mandolin, double bass and drums, the results bringing to mind a host of artists from Jansch, Drake and Fahey, to the Penguin Café Orchestra and Mike Hurley. "Fatherhood," Josh reflects, "I was finding, forces one to abandon parts of the self--a heavy proposition in a society that emphasizes individualism. Cultural critic, farmer, and novelist, Wendell Berry in his book, A Native Hill, muses: 'In order to know the hill, it is necessary to slow the mind down to the hill's pace.' This principle applied to me at the time as I was adapting to a new speed of life and striving to be present as a father. On the deck, as my mind slowed down to take in the chirps and wind gusts, these songs began to blossom. "A truly beautiful album emphasising the splendour of the outside world and the gentle pace of life many of us have found ourselves in over the last year and a half. Following a trio of explosive singles, the band finally bring us their debut full-length album, Retaliation, on the London-based punk institution La Vida Es Un Mus. Having formed in early 2020 and featuring a crew of members with long-term associations to the London punk scene, The Chisel quickly secured a reputation as one of the most exciting bands from a pool of contemporaries that includes Chubby & The Gang, Stingray and Big Cheese. Their sound is rooted firmly in Punk but with influences that run across the board to create a distinctive blend of Oi!, anarcho, UK-82 and hardcore. Retaliation is an unmistakably British record that draws a line from 1982 up to the present day, pushing its way into your collection and torching your stereo. Opening with the agitated force of 'Unlawful Execution', the tone is firmly set by a song that addresses the brutality of the Met Police ("Tell me what's the difference between right or wrong / When a copper gets to blast a lad who did nothing wrong"). 'Come See Me' is a ferocious ode to camaraderie in the face of mouthy boneheads and bellends. 'Shit Life Syndrome' is a poisoned reference to the same cynical phrase used by physicians to describe the effects of people living under poverty and in the grips of substance abuse ("How can you expect people to act nicely, they've all been left on the edge of society"). It's one of many songs influenced by singer Cal's experiences of growing up in the working-class town of Blackpool. Cal states: "Blackpool as a town is often overlooked or even looked down upon, I wanted to write lyrics which gave the people of my town a voice". With tunes like these The Chisel show that they'll never pull any punches. Rami Khalifé, composer and pianist, transcends the classical heritage of his years studying at the Juilliard School in NYC and the Middle Eastern origins of his masterful family: his father Marcel Khalifé is a major composer and musician in the Arab world.

The drummer and producer Aymeric Westrich has an instinctive DIY approach and infuses his music with his knowledge of urban and electronic cultures, developed with Kery James, Cassius, Phoenix and more recently Lomepal.

Beginning in 2007, when DC Recordings released the debut Out Of Phase, they have released many albums and EPs, both self-released and with labels (Fuzz Club, Hands In The Dark and Cardinal Fuzz).

United by hustle and an unmatchable enthusiasm for alternative hip hop, Spoken Nerd and Juan Cosby have teamed to make the synth-pop/hip-hop-fused LP, Grapes. Grapes was actually first concocted as word of a rumored reboot of "Tales From the Crypt" landed in the ears of Nathan Conrad. The whispers of rebirth for the series stoked the fire of nostalgia in fans of former years, but simultaneously sparked a larger scheme in the Nashville based rapper, Spoken Nerd. Wheels turning, Nathan Conrad, aka Spoken Nerd, shared his ideas of cultivating a "Tales from the Crypt" mixtape to Cincinnati based producer, Juan Cosby. Surely the "on-brand" horror themed lyrics of Spoken Nerd would mesh seamlessly with the John Carpenter-esque beats by Juan to fuel fans of EC and, perhaps, catch the ears of EC themselves. Unfortunately, EC Comics went out of business in the 50's, and the internet rumors proved unfruitful of reboot, but the brainchild of Juan & Nerd's soldiered on. Much like the Crypt series, Grapes is an album that covers topics like deception, forbidden fruits, envy and sacrifice. You can hear features from E-Turn, Isaac Stinson, Darko the Super, MC Homeless and 247 of Out of Place on this project.

The curtain opens on “Aurora Aura:” Bleubird and Sibitt rap, riding the drifts of Da Ros’s beats, enveloping us in a quiet and mysterious world where the snow is deep. From there we are taken on a trip through the spooky “Sacred Forest” and the dark quasi-Americana of “The Voyage.” In ”Core,” Sibitt takes a fast paced and aggressive lead, while Bleubird complements it with his equally seething but laid-back counterpart. “Wonder ‘s Answer,” conflates the languages into a mysterious groove. “Plus Minus” has Sibitt offering a beautiful and weird melody, which primes us for Bluebird’s hypnotic spell-rant while Da Ros’s beats deteriorate gradually around us. The finale, “Same Train,” with its charismatic and infectious swirl, is enough to make you want to start the record again to decipher the things you may have missed the first time around. Could the calendar week, be a more apt metaphor? Seven Days Six Nights is a cycle that leads us right back to the top.
