London based label Natural Selection present their 4th release in the form of a 4-track physical and digital Techno EP courtesy of Rommek, entitled "Devil's Playground EP". Cut by Simon at The Exchange Vinyl and mastered by Dadub Studios, Berlin.
Based in London, Rommek has seen his music released by the heaviest of renowned labels such as Mord, Arts & James Ruskin's Blueprint Records. Rommek returns to Natural Selection after releasing with the label via their widely acclaimed VA compilation fundraiser "In Aid Of Ukraine" in 2022, with his track "All Blood Is Red", which has gained support by some of the most respected DJ's worldwide.
Since his debut release in 2014, Rommek has creatively expanded his own sound and has firmly established himself within the global techno and experimental scene. His extensive interest in sound design is crafted within the dense atmospheres, heavy broken drums and dynamic tones found within his productions. After various releases that grounded him within the Blueprint family, Rommek then completed his most established work to date, the 'Set In Stone Trilogy' in 2018. The three part release compromises of 12 tracks, original and remixes from key members of the Blueprint team; James Ruskin, O/v/r (James Ruskin & Regis), Broken English Club and Makaton.
After releasing over 15 solo EP's, Rommek has gained a wide range of noteworthy support, from being played on BBC Radio 1, to features and reviews in Mixmag, The Wire and The Quietus magazines. In 2018 he was featured within the top 100 globally charted artists on Resident Advisor. From this, it is clear that Rommek is driven to continue expanding his capabilities and keep excelling forward. After forming a close connection to Natural Selection in recent years, he has now cemented himself as one of the main front-line artists and residents within the London based imprint.
Natural Selection are well known for bridging the heavier spectrum of Techno, Electro, IDM, Acid, etc. with new, experimental style and form. One can always expect cutting-edge, hard-hitting, underground electronics from Natural Selection, with extreme diversity in sound.

Spheres second release lands with Gilles Renneson's Callisto EP
Gilles Renneson's Callisto EP is the second release on Rua Sound's Spheres sub-label. The second on the label following a much loved EP by Noroi in March, this EP delivers dark, UK-influenced broken techno for discerning bass music heads.
Gilles Renneson is one half of the highly acclaimed Brussels-based duo GoldFFinch, and he brings his exceptional production skills to the forefront with Callisto. Gilles has released on respected labels including Innervisions, Turbo, Fuse Music, 877, Dirtybird, and Glasgow's Numbers, and has made a major contribution to the post-dubstep and modern Belgian techno scene.
On Callisto, Gilles rolls out superbly creative percussion that moves between satisfying and anxious over the course of the EP, all loaded over broken kick drums. Fans of Livity Sound and Timedance take note.
The release comes packages with original artwork by Josje Bijl aka Yorobi.

Endplate is back after his excellent Gemini EP from 2020. The andalusian expert gives us four exercises of proper driving techno with an excellent sonic craft.

Unreal opens this slice of plastic with a repetitive and elastic line grooving across the precise beat. The main synth line changes in intensity along the development of the track playing wisely with the percussive elements to create the required feeling.

On Pmmm the rhythm goes dirty and pulsating, gummy sequences come along a n intense drum pattern heavily reverberated and processed.

The flip side opens with, No Success Street, starting with a voice-like sound, obsessive and intense with an opaque bass drum as foundation. Sibilant drones add tension to the formula, increasing the adrenaline levels as the track goes into total madness.

Malenia closes the physical edition with echoed drums and loads of reverb. The drums go solo for the first bars, being filtered and processed constantly. A superb tool to add tension to a busy set.

As the first bonus digital track, Animal Noise, dirty and screamy, a dystopic hymn for the proper morning routine at Berghain for example.

To end the digital version, Green Eye, direct and punchy, with the right dose of drum pressure on a 90% rhythmic track, again a tool for those to know how to use them.

Techno with no jokes inside, from the makers to the real players.

RP Boo's essential first album, 2013's ‘Legacy’ caused a storm of acclaim worldwide as people finally started to piece together his true place in Footwork and the powerful legacy of his work as an innovator. In parallel with productions, his always on-point DJ sets have lit up festivals and clubs worldwide and continue to do so to this day, notably leading to him being named one of the ‘100 World’s Best DJs’ in a recent book by DJ Mag. Now on its 10th anniversary ‘Legacy Vol.2’ continues his story. Featuring tracks created between 2002 and 2007, this is a wonderous selection of material, some known, some unknown. The album kicks off with the dark and epic ‘Eraser’ created in September 2007, during a time RP was going to underground Footwork club War Zone on the west side of Chicago. The track was inspired by, and created to fuel, the “taunting words of intimidation” between dancers.” And now it makes for one intense album opener. Some cuts are inspired by everyday life – take for example 2005's ‘Pop Machine’, which was inspired by the time he was working at Speedway Oil Change who had a temperamental soda/pop machine. One day, a customer put money in the machine and nothing came out, so he continued to press the button, and for some reason RP found this funny so he went over to the machine and started pressing the buttons himself and everyone he touched started saying “Work!.” Inspired once he was back home in his studio he made ‘Pop Machine’ in tribute to the defunct machinery. When he came back to work the next day and played the track for all this co-workers it blew their minds and they also laughed with at how creative RP could get using things from his everyday life as inspiration. ‘Pop Machine’ also illustrates how RP’s Footwork uses repetition and minimalism as fuel. Years later RP Boo is still inspired by Foot Work – the art of dancing and working for dancers. He continues to shake up clubs and isn’t afraid to get out from behind the decks and drop some Foot himself. We’ll let the man himself have the final word - “What inspires me to keep going is seeing the people having an awesome time moving on the dance floor, as well as playing music that is a recognizable part of my life. I’m one with it.”

Roger Robinson (King Midas Sound, Black Space Quartet) delivers 2 standalone sides of haunted soul over instrumentals from Jabu’s Amos Childs. Described by Roger as an imaginary soundtrack to a long escalator ride downwards to a Hiroshi Sugimoto exhibition - ‘the music that might be playing as you tried your best to avoid everyone else’s eyes’. Roger’s innate understanding of form and melody manages to somehow pull real ear worm pop hooks out of the lilting backing of ground hum and hiss from the mixing desk, his falsetto bringing to mind everything from early Sade demos through to lovers rock. On the A side Summer sees Roger yearning for warmer days, over an other-worldly drums machine workout before collapsing in on itself in a disco mix / funeral coda outro. On the flip side the instrumental is pared back even further to a crawling slo motion piano and the sound of faders crackling turned to 11, Roger dials the emotions up another notch, channelling ghosts of low rider soul and entering into ice cold slow jam / ballad territory. Essential late winter / early spring listening for lonely late nite laundrette trips and dawn cigarettes in the graveyard.

A native of Montreal, Canada, via NYC and Boston, Zack Lober is a bassist and composer now based in The Netherlands. Over his 20 plus years as a performer he has shared the stage with some of the most respected artists in Jazz and Improvised music including David Binney, Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris, John Escreet, Greg Ward, Jamie Baum, Jerry Bergonzi, Ben van Gelder, Jason Palmer and Chet Doxas among many others.

His latest project, NO Fill3r represents his debut as a band leader and is an exploration in minimalist writing for trio combined with maximum improvisation and creativity. The group features two rising stars on the European Jazz scene; trumpeter Suzan Veneman and drummer Sun-Mi Hong to help bring the vision to life.

Lober presents a set of deeply personal music with themes touching on our shared humanity, love, loss and the infiniteness of the universe, coupled with the spirit of freedom, openness and group improvisation.

The album was recorded live in one large room at the world-renowned Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum, The Netherlands. It was produced by Lober’s longtime friend and musical peer Ben van Gelder.

A tastemaker who surged from his roots amongst Glasgow’s rich electronic scene to become a globally respected DJ and producer in his own right, Scottish favourite Jasper James’ career has been built not only on his early musical heritage but also his ability to create and curate his unique style as a standout talent within the DJ booth.

From the youngest ever DJ to play at Sub Club through to b2b appearances alongside the likes of Ryan Elliott and his longstanding residence at Phonox, his blend of off-kilter house soon led to explorations within the studio, releasing material via ESP Institute, Optimo Trax and his own Mitchell Street Records.

Title track ‘Keepon’ is a percussive-driven and impactful lead effort as crisp drums take hold, guided by subtle vocal loops and background melodies ebb and flow amongst the mix to ensure listeners are kept wanting and guessing at every twist and turn. Next, A2 ‘Rise’ builds on the opener as slinking grooves meet playful samples, icy hats, and spiralling synths to keep things moving nicely.

Jackâ€™s House welcomes new artist Mills to the label with his energetic Empad EP. Mills is an underground DJ/producer who lives full time on the island of Ibiza, a place he feels most at home when it comes to being creative. He has built up a cool following making a subliminal noise, and also launched his own successful event called Uno Mas last summer. A1. The title track Empad, already demonstrates some Spanish influences and has been test driven throughout the summer of 2022 at several clubs including the infamous Dc10 for Carl Cox invites. This deep original tech driven track with occasional sub bass wobbles thrown in, just seems to pick up the dance floor whenever it is dropped. A true winner. A2.Ohh has an underground carnival vibe to it with some reversed deeply spoken vocals accompanied by lots of fills and small military drum shots driven by itâ€™s solid kick that drives the track in and out of a couple of breakdowns. B1. Nerds is a fast paced busy track with tight hats travelling over a bubbling baseline. The fills and noises throughout this track come with more disguised spoken vocals and are what really give this track itâ€™s signature. Another one that drives the dance floor B2. Fari offers more underground carnival influences with a dirty snare and a deep riding baseline pattern. The limited vocal snippets that jump in from time to time and excellent drums, make this track what it is.

The first volume of San Francisco Moog: 1968-72 introduced the world to a trove of recordings from a little-known hinge point in electronic-music history. Vol. 2 brings to light the rest of tapes—and the rest of the story.

In 1968, Bay Area native Doug McKechnie got hold of one the very first modular Moog synthesizers ever made and began finding his own way to play it. Soon, he was hauling the finicky instrument around to perform improvised concerts at colleges and psychedelic ballrooms, as well as an ill-fated appearance on the bill at Altamont. Some of the performances were recorded, and the surviving tapes—never before released—capture a free-flowing, transportive sound that fills in the gap between the austere mid-century academic avant garde and the expansive cosmic suites of Tangerine Dream and the rest of the Berlin School in the ’70s.

Vol. 2 captures a wider range of sounds and moods, encompassing austere sonic experiments, early sequenced pulses, and melodic etudes.

By no means a release of new or current Don Cab material(and originally released in 1999), Singles Breaking Up (Vol. 1) offers quite a range of the band's history to appreciate. The oldest recordings found here are programs 1-6 which became the first two singles and a b-side for the fourth. They wererecorded in a 1/2 inch 8 track studio by Lee Hollihan of Valencia, PA (the original Good Morning Vietnam man) for only $25 an hour. The next batch, 7-9, were recorded by Steve Albini in his once home studio and were a part of the For Respect Sessions. Program 10 was also recorded in this same studio by colleague engineer Bob Weston. Program 11 was recorded in Detroit by engineer Al Sutton and was a part of the sessions for Don Caballero 2. Lastly, programs 12-13 were recorded again by Steve Albini in the B room portion of this Chicago studio Electrical Audio. The photographic art concept for the whole anthology is simply this: 7 inch phonograph singles breaking up, in the kind of setting of giving Abby Road back to the people. With the exception of programs 12-13, these songs wererecorded in the early part of the 1990's. The intention was not to release them in this form, if at all, but to give the record company a rough idea of the songs Don Cab at the time. The "punky" songs were written with the sole intention of obtaining a record contract. It seemed a the time that contracts flowed like water for this kind of music. The band soon found out that it wasn't quite that easy, but did, eventually, manage to sign a deal with Touch and Go. It is interesting to see how some of these songs, or parts of them, developed into others that have become well-known.

Ireland, 2014, a group of seasoned musicians came together to form The Hacklers. Influenced by the sound of The Specials, Bad Manners, Stiff Little Fingers and Bob Marley, they quickly built a strong live reputation in Ireland and after a set on the east German This Is Ska stage, they never looked back. The Hacklers have since then played numerous festivals in the UK and on the European mainland, such as Brutus Oi Festival in Camden, Ruhrpott Ska Explosion and Ska Im Westend in Dortmund, Kippertronix in Snowdonia, Wales, Oi! For You Fest in Magdenburg, Spirit from the Street Fest and Berlin Ska City Festival.They shared the stage with bands like The Beat, The Aggrolites, Bad Manners and The Selecter, just to name a few. Wherever they played they brought passion and fire to the stage, and got crowds dancing, racking up an ever growing fan base. By now The Hacklers had developed their own distinguished sound, a mix of ska and skinhead reggae but with their own unique `extra stout' Irish flavour.Their debut album Between The Lines was released on Contra Records in October 2015. Between touring and gigging, they also joined forces with other bands to contribute to 3 of the Specialized Projects, which raises funds to improve the lives of teens and young adults with cancer or who are living in difficult circumstances. They did Stop The Train for the Bob Marley Tribute release, 3 Card Trick for the Combat Cancer, a Tribute to The Clash and reworked the Desmond Dekker song Dracula for the Tribute to Original Sounds of Ska.The loss of their brother and guitar player Bob just one day after finishing recording their second album Another Round in December 2019 was a massive blow in the gut for the guys.After taking some time and talking to friends and family, they decided to team up with Smith & Miller Records and release the album in 2020. And even though someone else will have to play that guitar now, Bob will never be forgotten, and his spirit will forever linger in The Hacklers' sound.

The band had been together for a few months, and we had some songs roughly worked out. I had managed to arrange a meeting with Miles Copeland (manager of the Police), and he wanted us to bring a demo tape. We didn't have much money, but I found a very cheap studio in Hayes in Middlesex, which we booked for two hours.At that point I didn't have my own amp but the man at the studio said not to worry because he had a great Fender amp which was all set up and ready to go. The studio was a very small, converted building in a back garden, it was a tight fit, and the Fender amp was actually a miniscule combo amp, with a very clean sound. It was a million miles from the overdriven noise I was looking for. Also, there was no proper headphone mix and I had to play guitar in the tiny "control room" to avoid sound spillage. This meant I could only vaguely hear the rest of the band.We quickly ran through our three songs. The man thought we were playing so fast because we were nervous, he wasn't aware of punk rock yet. I told him it was meant to be like that. All three songs were recorded and mixed within the two hours.The following week myself and Esso took the tube up to Oxford Street for our meeting with Miles Copeland. He had a good listen to the three songs and appeared unshocked. He was well aware that punk was "happening" so he was friendly and took us seriously. He was mainly interested in what our ambitions for the band were, we should have said "we wanna be worldwide stars," or something like that but we didn't.

Ky is the new "solo" project of Ky Brooks, best known as vocalist/lyricist of noise trio Lungbutter and a slew of other Montréal-based out-music projects like 8-person queerpunk band Femmaggots and experimental/improv trio Nag. Power Is The Pharmacy is an album of cerebral and visceral artpunk "mainly about grief, death, the fear of loss,losing dreams, losing youth, people, public space, ultimately oneself" _ an emotionallyelectrifying collection of songs fuelled by Ky's piercing poetry, both spoken and sung,delivering an incisive blend of socio-political observation and spiritual sadness, swirlingthrough vortices of disenchantment and re-enchantment.The seeds of Power Is The Pharmacy were planted in pre-lockdown performanceswhere Big|Brave's Mat Ball played tape loops to Ky's poems, with their intent "to figureout how to make music that involved singing in a more melodic way and use parts ofmy voice I wasn't using with Lungbutter and other noise/punk projects." Then pandemichit, along with Canadian pandemic income support, allowing for Ky's acquisition of acouple of mini-synths. Songs took on all kinds of further re-shaping in the isolation ofMontréal's intense lockdown winter 2020-21. Then devastating tragedy struck (as it hadfor so many) in spring 2021 when Lungbutter drummer and dear friend Joni Sadlerdied suddenly of a brain aneurism. Ky describes "All The Sad And Loving People" as"the most direct piece of writing I've done in response to Joni's passing" and the song'shaunting, devotional simplicity is a numinous album highlight among many.Power Is The Pharmacy careens through hissing bruitist synthscape, free/jazz sprinkles,soft-focus gauze, coldwave and ambient-to-thick sludge, all anchored by Ky's superblysly, searching, serrated lyrics and voice. Sim Sim Sim' is the Latin Grammy award-winning debut album from Bala Desejo. A band who are at the forefront of Rio de Janeiro’s artistic renaissance, they channel influences of Brazilian 60s Tropicália, 70s psychedelia and MPB to create a nostalgic, yet joyfully, avant-garde sound.

The band is comprised of four distinct characters, each one an incredible talent in their own right and each with impressive credentials in the Brazilian Independent music scene. Central to the resurgent Rio de Janeiro musical community, the quartet of Dora Morelenbaum, Julia Mestre, Lucas Nunes and Zé Ibarra thrive in a group dynamic. They formed Bala Desejo to play collaboratively for a festival date in 2021, but when that show became a victim of pandemic shutdowns the idea for an album project materialised.

'Sim Sim Sim’, which translates into English as ‘Yes Yes Yes’, weaves through a fusion of genres, taking twists and turns as it progresses. There is Tropicália, MPB, rock, samba-canção soul-funk and reggae in the mix. It possesses many of the qualities of a classic album from Brazilian music’s golden era of the 60s and 70s, but also manages to sound very now, which is not an easy task to pull off. As solo musicians, they have worked and collaborated with Brazilian icons Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso and Milton Nascimento to name but a few. Bala Desejo feels like a natural extension of what came before, taking the baton from these luminaries, adding their unique spin and moving the sound forward.

When we first heard Bala Desejo, we were blown away. Their epic theatrical live shows leave audiences stunned and they are the band we had always been hoping to find. A modern-day Novos Baianos or Mutantes, but definitely not an imitation. They celebrate their influences, but are an innovative group, and consequently, they have created one of the finest records to come out of Brazil in recent years. A truly sensational debut!

Over the course of their stop-start five years together, Honeybus ventured into the BBC studios on a dozen occasions, leaving a catalogue of recordings that mirrored their latest releases as well as offering up a fascinating alternate history. The songs that make up 1970’s much-loved “almost didn’t happen” Story album (reissued by Hanky Panky/Mapache in 2018, along with the rest of the group’s output) began appearing as early as the summer of 1968. The likes of ‘Scarlet Lady’, ‘Black Mourning Band’ and ‘Under The Silent Tree’ appear almost fully-formed, played as ensemble pieces, suggesting that their album counterparts were captured quickly and without fuss during snatched studio sessions throughout late 1968 and 1969. They also demonstrate Honeybus’s often overlooked skills as a live unit – BBC sessions notoriously allowed little scope for re-takes or overdubbing; you went in and you laid it down while the men in white coats watched the clock. Thrilling as it is to finally hear these alternate versions of familiar Honeybus cornerstones, it’s the surfeit of otherwise unrecorded material that’s the most startling revelation here. Under The Silent Tree: Gentle Sounds With Strings And Things At The BBC 1967-1973 presents no less than 10 unique Honeybus songs (plus a further four on the CD version only) that virtually constitute an entire second album’s worth of unheard material. We find ourselves in a kind of musical hall of mirrors, revealing in a whole new perspective on one of the last great cult pop groups of the ’60s, where every track offers a fresh outlook, a fresh thrill, a fresh sound. By presenting a snapshot into the pulse of the city and the vibrant musicians that live in it, ‘Hidden Waters’ collates tracks from a wide spectrum of musical genres from the avant-garde edge to bossa nova, samba, Candomblé, lo-fi rock, jazz and funk.

É Soul Cultura Vol.1 seemed to land at exactly the right moment. Post-lockdown, optimism was back on the rise and the dance floors swelled again. For many listeners, Manchester based DJ Luke Una’s intriguingly woven pattern of new, old, rare and under-discovered music from around the world became the soundtrack to rejuvenated positivity.

This second volume gives another opportunity for Luke to share his journey of the past four decades of staying up late and getting transcendental whilst listening to holy grail music as the city slept. It at times ventures into the deeper, spiritual, soulful, downtempo, experimental aspects of his tastes. From the conscious, street soul fusion gospel of Veronica Mickie's 'Lost Children', to an excursion into Swiss, psych, progressive rock in the form of Pyranha, then onto the classic Indian music-inspired electronic workout of Andi Otto's 'Bangalore Whispers'. Luke hints at his softer side in Avis; a sweet, obscure cover version of Minnie Riperton’s ‘Baby, This Love I Have’, as well as championing local heroes in the shape of Manchester’s Yargo and their driving, obscure, proto-house belter, ‘Marimba’. There’s also Japanese, electronic, slo-mo heaviness from 1979, courtesy of Bach Revolution. House music is integral to the É Soul sound and is represented by Nav Aktah’s deep remix of Mr Scruff, and then there’s Isis ‘In Essense’; a track of such majestic brilliance that it has never left Luke’s record bag.

The selection is eclectic, global, and plucked from different times and spaces. In theory, perhaps they shouldn't work together, but there is a mysterious link that makes them gel as a whole. That’s what Luke does best. He creates a sort of musical alchemy, unifying the diverse.

It is best described by Luke himself, “It’s not about showing off, collector rarity, or ego-strutting, it’s all about telling stories, sharing the music, and making life’s journey mean something. In the end, of course, it’s just a compilation of other people’s music, but hopefully it’s more than that, adding something back to the pot.”

Excavated from the halls of funk! A newly discovered live album from the late great Junie Morrison! 1975 was a transitional year for \former Ohio Players and future P-Funk keyboardist Junie Morrison. He had just left the former band after working on a trio of releases that would catapult the funk band to fame, and his burgeoning solo career was just beginning to take off. Recorded at Dooley’s in Lansing, Michigan, this live album was likely recorded just after his fantastic second solo album Freeze. This performance focuses on songs from Freeze, such as the incredibly groovy opening track “Junie II”. The rhythm section are perfectly at home in the pocket, with Junie’s keyboards and charismatic vocals floating effortlessly over horn rhythms. This is followed up by a medley of the Ohio Players’ best songs, “Pain; Cookies Will Get You; Please; Ecstasy” played at a breakneck tempo. Junie’s synthesizer lines are something of a forerunner to the cosmic funk he would play with Parliament, but hearing the Players’ iconic songs as a medley is enough to justify getting this record! Of course, don’t miss the covers of Aretha Franklin’s “Oh Me Oh My (I’m A Fool For You Baby)”, Diana Ross’s “Surrender”, and The Temptations’ “Shakey Ground”!
