Long awaited new album of our rock legend

After almost ten years since the release of “Sto roku na ceste” (One Hundred Years on the Road), here is a compilation of thirteen recordings by this year’s jubilant singer, musician, composer etc. Michal Prokop. Twelve original tracks and one cover version feature Prokop and his band Framus Five in a classic line-up, complete with extraordinary guests – and in great form.

Logically, nothing changes in the essence of the blues-based electric songwriting. The principle of a uniquely sung, melodically strong and carefully chosen-worded repertoire is once again a given. Seven times Michal Prokop himself, but also Lubos Andrst, Jan Hruby or Martin Nemec added new music, and the unreleased legacy of Petr Skoumal was also included. The already existing texts by Pavel srut, Zdenek Rytir and Jiri zacek were supplemented by Michal Bulir, Tomas Rorecek, Milan sasek, Martin Nemec and Jan Lacina. A special bonus is Jezek’s, Voskovec’s and Werich’s “Svet naruby” (World upside down), reminding us of the fate of the censor’s deleted recording from 1969 and the permanent validity of the old song.

Pleasant echoes of American rock, not just the violins demonstrating home-grown origins, thoughtfully sparing use of keys, winds and choruses. Emphasis on civil lyrics, effective choruses and memorable slogans. Proven listening functionality of this music and the friendly togetherness within the band. This is also why the creation of the album was able to cope with the serious health indisposition of guitarist Lubos Andrst, in his unfinished recordings respectfully replaced once by Michal Pavlicek and several times by Pavel Marcel.

Both CD and 2LP have been graphically decorated by the studio “3. dilna”, i.e. by Karel Haloun and Ludek Kubik. The fundamental visual concept is based on images of nature as an infinitely changing symbol of life. There is a complete set of song lyrics, and the inserted sheet offers documentary photos of Framus Five. The 180 gram vinyl version also provides a unique code to download the music in MP3 format for free.

It’s a sympathetically unsentimental album, colorful in arrangement, and needfully energetic. An album anchoring Michal Prokop in the position of an unmistakable Czech rocker, faithful to his own musical opinion and his numerous fans. An album released after a long time by Supraphon, where the singer started out an incredible fifty-three years ago.

Boot Camp Clik’s Smif-N-Wessun performs their classic hits with the Czech Republic based band, Champion Sound, live in Prague. Tek N’ Steel first stormed the masses with hardcore rhymes and a flawless ability to trade the mic without hesitation. Produced by Evil Dee and Mr. Walt, Dah Shinin was layered with heavy bass lines, razor sharp scratching and a dungeon sound that basted through any roof. New Sun was born right after the release of third album Sick Sad Love in november 2019. Soon the postmodern plague hit the world and Stiu couldn’t play anymore shows than the one sold out release show in Stockholm. When we started making the music our guitarist Nicklas Bargell & i took turns playing drums & we made some stuff as a trio. A new drummer came in & lots of music was made. New Sun was recorded by the band in our own studio Shadow Kingdom & mixed by our drummer Christian Augustin together with the rest of us. It was mastered by long time collaborator & friend Magnus Lindberg. Artwork was as always made by our bassplayer Kalle Mattsson. This time we kept it all in the family. Musically we dig deeper into the ground on which we are standing & things go in a few different directions as on all our albums. Some words from Jessica Mengarelli on her lyrics: ”The lyrics spring from a sense of desperation and acuteness, they are an expression of how it feels to be driven by restlessness, to be flung between euphoria and resignation, to crave presence, to give up to indifference, to feel trapped in the grip of old experiences. They try to process the different ways I've been dealing with those emotions.”

It is widely accepted that the recorded musical output of Indian-born British guitarist Amancio D’Silva came to a premature closure with the landmark 1972 albums, Cosmic Eye and the unreleased masterpiece Konkan Dance. The Roundtable are here to prove otherwise, announcing the discovery of an extraordinary lost recording. Forty years after it was recorded we proudly present Sapana, the forgotten piece of a remarkable musical legacy, the final recording from one the most singular artists to emerge from the British Jazz scene of the 1960s/70s. Recorded in 1983 and released here for the first time, Sapana is thematically akin to Cosmic Eye, a further musical impression of the subconscious (Dream Sequences), vividly imagined with traditional Hindustani and western improvisation. A spellbinding fusion of Indian raga and New-Age jazz. Celebrated as a pioneer of the ‘Indo-Jazz’ movement of the 1960s, D’Silva’s adventurous synthesis of modal jazz and Indian classical music defined the seminal 1969 Lansdowne jazz recordings Hum Dono and Integration. Here we find D’Silva fifteen years later, removed from the jazz scene and musically in place of deep introspection and meditative tranquility. The recording features Sitarist Clem Alford, a collaborator from the Konkan Dance sessions plus renowned Tabla player, Millar and Saxophonist/Flautist Lyn Dobson, a musician who had previously worked with Soft Machine, Third Ear Band, and Henry Lowther. Together the quartet construct a deeply evocative set transcending the realm of both jazz and Indian music. Pressed on 180g vinyl and packaged in a custom flip-back sleeve.

Since his beginnings in 1970 as the vocalist of the band Lost Alaaf, Haino has spread his work across multiple genres, pushing the limits as a tireless explorer of free-form experimentation. It was with the intense psychedelic soundscapes of Fushitsusha, formed in 1978, that his live set earned a formidable reputation. The band’s debut, released by legendary Tokyo label PSF Records in 1989, was a live album that, together with its 1991 follow-up, were described by now-defunct Stylus Magazine as “some of the most incredible performances ever committed to tape”.

For this latest release, Haino returned to Tokyo’s legendary Gok Sound Studio with guitarist Masami Kawaguchi (New Rock Syndicate), bassist Shingo Nauke and drummer Toshihiko Katano as Keiji Haino and the Hardy Rocks - a project they formed in 2016. You're either standing facing me or next to me consists of ten cover songs of some of the most covered songs in the history of western popular music (plus a cover of his own with ‘Black Petal’). In true Haino fashion, expect the unexpected with complete structural reworks, and creative turns only the master of dark textures could ever conceive.

The year 2019 marked significant changes for Baltimore psychedelic-doom trio, Black Lung. Following the release of their third album, Ancients, guitarist and founding member Adam Bufano amiably departed the band and in November 2019, was replaced by guitarist Dave Fullerton. Just four months later, the reconfigured trio’s plans for touring in support of Ancients were canceled as the world entered Covid-19 lockdown. It was time to reconcile their touring ambition with the reality that live music was effectively shut down indefinitely. In the existential dread, loss and uncertainty of the global pandemic, with the backdrop of malignant fascism and cultural enmity in the USA, Black Lung began writing the songs that would comprise their next record. There is no question that Dark Waves, Black Lung’s newest release via Heavy Psych Sounds Records, was conceived in hostile times. Dave Cavaliers lyrics reflect this hostility. Songs like ‘The Cog’ and ‘Mad King’ lament the weaponized ignorance of the propagandized American citizen, while ‘Awaken’ and ‘The Path’ muse on escapism and the false protection of dreams. On the title track, ‘Dark Waves’, the band channels this mood of bitterness through their instruments, as a meditative bridge is slowly transformed into a foreboding storm front centered around Dave Fullerton’s hypnotic guitar melodies. Despite the apparent darkness, Dark Waves is not a cold or desolate sounding record. The band leaps forward from their previous releases with warmer, brighter sound crafting and more audacious songwriting. There are passages with a tangible sense of jubilation and excitement, as the band members revel in the recording process after more than a year of uncertainty and frustration. While in some ways Dark Waves offers a departure from prior Black Lung records, the band stays true to their roots in doom and psychedelic music, delivering eight songs packed with the frenzied, fuzzed-out guitar breakdowns, booming drums, and soulful vocals that longtime fans will appreciate. The decision to bring bass guitar prominently into the mix on Dark Waves adds new levels of depth and heaviness to Black Lung’s songs, which may be the album’s most notable and exciting development. Underpinning everything about Dark Waves is the band's decision to shed conventions and their ability to adapt to change. For Black Lung, making it through these dark times meant reflecting on the past while pushing forward without knowing what the future may hold. 'Flicker' is the second album from Ride guitarist and songwriter Andy Bell. This 18-track double album finds Andy moving towards classic songwriting, notably on the reflective lead single 'Something Like Love', the strident harmonies of 'World of Echo', the joyous refracted loops of 'Jenny Holzer B. Goode' and the fuzz-laden late-'60s balladeering of 'Love Is The Frequency'. Stylistically, the four sides of 'Flicker' take in everything from modern psychedelia to fingerpicked folk, whimsical baroque pop, and Byrdsian 12-string beauty. It's a breathtaking array and makes it even more abundantly clear that Andy has entered a purple patch in his songwriting, hitting a new velocity in contrast to his initial inhibitions about becoming a solo artist. 'Flicker' is also an apt description for the genesis of the album. At the start of 2021, Andy returned to the stems of the recording sessions he made at Beady Eye and Oasis bandmate Gem Archer's North London studio and added fuel to the fire, writing melodies and lyrics and turning them into fully formed songs. The same sessions were also the starting point for 'The View From Halfway Down' and this album picks up where that one left off, quite literally, with the very first words being "I was halfway down_". This is the first of several playful, possibly intentional, references to albums and song titles that litter the record like a musical breadcrumb trail. As much as this is a modern sounding and forward-looking record, it's also very much about looking back, something that is clear from the first glimpse of the front cover - a previously unseen outtake from Joe Dilworth's photo sessions for the inner sleeve of Ride's debut album, 'Nowhere'. "When I think about 'Flicker', I see it as closure," explains Andy. "Most literally, on a half-finished project from over six years ago, but also on a much bigger timescale. This compilation brings together 24 iconic songs from that era, with a focus on the theme of love songs (A + B side) as well as social political songs (C + D side), highlighting the emotions that this music brought to the popular working classes of Lima, nationwide and the diaspora. More than 30 years later, these songs continue to resonate like the mirror of a country that was reborn but this time is looking at itself and its own identity.

From the mid-1960s onwards, there was a unique moment of fusions in Peruvian culture brought about by Andean migration from the countryside to the city which gave rise to adaptations and intercultural mixing. The culture and music they brought created the powerful genre of Andean tropical cumbia, via electric instruments and arrangements along with modern, popular pop sounds, creating a legacy that is alive to this day. Musical revolutions are often born from the people. Peruvian “chicha” cumbia is the music born in the "barrios bajos” (slums), alleys, hills and the peripheries of Lima on the coast and cities on the edge of the Andes mountains in the late 70’s and 80’s. The true new Peruvian sound was not played with folk instruments but with guitars and timbales. In the 60’s and 70’s Peruvian tropical music was characterized by psychedelic hybridity and instrumentals for mass delight, by the mid-70s the appearance of a "class consciousness" and therefore a subaltern narrative. “Chicha” is perhaps the genre that has most emphasized its pride in being proletariat, itinerant, provincial and hardworking.

Founded in Lima by Juan Campos Muñoz, a businessman, dreamer, and also a lover of music, Discos Horóscopo was a label company on the margins of the official Peruvian music industry. Learning the ins and outs of capitalism in the 80’s was hard because it was the decade where the wildest neoliberal policies and the most extreme Maoist sendero luminosa revolt began simultaneously. On Juan Campos’s end, it was the moment to initiate this new venture of Chicha music, which would allow Chicha to emerge symbolically (and then economically) to a new social class composed mostly of migrants, landless peasants, and proletarians without a factory.

Between 1977 and 1987, the Discos Horóscopo label produced the largest wave of Andean tropical cumbia in the world; Chicha, a reference to the fermented alcoholic drink from the Andes. The label was filled with contemporary icons such as Chacalón y La Nueva Crema, Los Shapis, Pintura Roja, Los Ovnis, Grupo Alegría and other groups which today still have a cult status in Peru and beyond. Together they created a unique style with the capacity to talk about both love and uprooting, unemployment, struggle of classes, internal violence and impossible loves.

Hymns Of The Damned is the follow-up to the band’s acclaimed Self-Titled debut. Opens with Shadow In The Night with its steady kick drum intro that recalls Black Sabbath’s Iron Man. The next track Morbid Lust comes and goes, its’ loud, it rocks but you’d struggle to remember it as it does sound, for the most part, rather interchangeable with other Stoner/Doom bands currently doing the rounds. Thrill Seeker is better, with a sound that would suggest that Hazemaze have been listening to The Cramps, what with the swampy dark sound it conjures. For me, any band that takes its cues from the Psychobilly legends suggests they have an excellent taste in music if nothing else. The albums longest track is Solicitor Of Evil, (kind of ironic when you think about it, to any Americans reading this, solicitor means lawyer in the UK) and chugs along at nearly 7 interminable minutes. The track Green River has some nice Nebula influences and helps pique my interest momentarily. A major criticism of the Stoner Rock genre/sound has been its over infatuation with 70’s retro Hard Rock, Sabbath, Bang, Pentagram, Dust, Deep Purple, you know the names. So, cutting to the chase, the album is well-played, produced, with fabulous new cover art colors

Fresh artistry is fully on display all over Hazemaze Give any one of these tracks a spin and you’ll see, though you should be warned (in the words of “Black Mamba Ii”): “One bite and then you are gone.” Hazemaze self-titled debut album was recorded in the winter of 2017 in Falun and was engineered by Timmy Ternestål. It was later released in early 2018, and we are excited to finally release a brand pressing with a new and reimagined artwork, and for the first time ever on cd-format.

Ennio Morricone has composed a very "rural" score with the sounds, that represent the life of the protagonist. Although integrated within modern society, the soul of this man is always directed to his past, to his land, to the teachings of his father which he could never leave behind. This adherence to the homeland is expressed through deliberately wild and almost enraged vocal performances of Edda Dell'Orso. Ennio Morricone has composed music which reflects the bucolic atmosphere of this tale through a series of archaically flavoured themes played by instruments like recorder and mandolin. Among the recurrent themes there are a mysterious motif, dramatic music for dissonant strings and a lounge theme with the typical Morricone sound. The main theme is reprised for recorder and guitar and there is Baroque music for the puppet theater played by woodwinds and percussions. As we continue our half-joke-verbal agreement of "one album per year" with Taner Öngür, here we go with "Water Cycle". Like many musician in the world, lock down home, early 2020 Taner Öngür got back to his own song books and merge them with some new ideas and brought us this exceptional instrumental album. It's quite hard to classify it within one genre but we can say it takes off from progressive sounds and explore around Öngür's latest band 43,75's own swing-surf-rock style (of course with some little psychedelic touches). These 14 tracks consist 3 special covers such as the Beatles' "I am the Walrus", Bollywood's famous "Mera Joota Hai Japani" and "Ya Mustafa" which featured in various works of middle eastern cinema. Taner Öngür, the legendary bass player of Moğollar (the iconic group of 1970’s Anadolu Pop movement), is producing solo projects since 90's. "Water Cycle" is his 4th opus of his collaboration with his latest band 43,75 and Tantana Records. During lockdown days of 2020, Öngür got back to his own song books and surfed between UK and India -and of course over fly central Asia- got together this very special instrumental guitar trip. Considering he is the "baptist" of the "anatolian rock" movement of 70's, his beyond-genres-eclectic view to the music fits perfectly to the swinging guitars, progressive touches, tribal beats, melancholic moments of “Water Cycle"... It's also a great "introduction to Taner Öngür's universe". Back in 2016 he formed this project: 43,75. Their first album “Elektrik Gramofon” (2017) was a beautiful selection of 20's - 50's Istanbul songs, distilled by Öngür's surf-swing-rocknroll appoach (it's LP's sold out within 48 hours!). Nowadays, most of the vinyl collectors knows about Anatolian Rock; but not many knows that Taner Öngür was on many cult records of the era and the definition of "anatolian pop" and "anatolian rock" are actually Taner Öngür's own wording, that became the name for it - since 70's. So, on "Sayko Ana” (2018) Öngür did not hesitate to have fun with it; browsing between forgotten Turkish folk songs and psych them. In 2019, he got back into archives, to dig "strange stories" from newspapers and vintage novels of 1930's-1960's, which gave birth to "Asrî Sadâ" album, that its LP consisting a superb - rich contented 16 pages tabloid newspaper; with "news" and "articles" related to the songs... and many other bizarre details of our "dusty days”. So, please welcome to Taner Öngür's own psych-surf-swing flavored universe!
