Vananidr is a band that sprung out of the ashes of black metal band Hydra. Hydra was active between the mid-nineties and 2006, since they split up Anders have been creating his take on black metal fused with melodies from Swedish folk music. In late 2019 Anders recruited two new members, Ljusebring on drums and Rickard on guitar. In January 2020 Fredrik Andersson (A Canorous Quintet, Netherbird, This Ending, ex-Amon Amarth, ex-Therion (live), ex-Guidance of Sin…) joined the band on drums. 2022 the band is back with their new album "Beneath the Mold" offering nothing but the best Swedish Black metal.

Diseñar y destruir [Design and Destroy] is the second album by Varsovia, an electronic punk project created in Lima at the beginning of 2012 by Dante Gonzales (synthesizers), Fernando Pinzás (synthesizers) and Sheri Corleone (guitar, vocals). Unlike their celebrated debut album Recursos inhumanos [Inhuman Resources] (2014), this new production reflects a greater influence of styles such as industrial music and EBM but maintaining the sound of analog synthesizers as a principle. The lyrics follow a concept based on the period of violence that Peru experienced in the 1980s, with samples of General Juan Velasco Alvarado and songs that refer to situations such as blackouts, bombings of terrorist groups, and the uncertainty of living in the midst of the armed conflict in a city lost in chaos.The songs of Diseñar y destruir were recorded between 2015 and 2017 and finished during 2021. This process was marked by the exit of Corleone (when she moved to the Netherlands) and the entry of Carla Vallenas as lead singer, with whom the first version of the album was recorded, and a promotional video was released. During this period, the band shared the stage with important artists such as She Past Away, Sixth June, Ash Code, Mueran Humanos or the legendary group of the 60s, Silver Apples.After a few years of activity, Carla Vallenas left the band, and both Dante Gonzales and Fernando Pinzás went on to work on different personal projects. Until 2021, when, after a brief activity of Varsovia as a duo, they decided to re-record the album with Sheri Corleone on vocals and guitar, marking the return to the original formation of the group.Varsovia has gathered great international attention in recent years thanks to the inclusion of a song from its first album in the soundtrack of the HBO series Los Espookys. Hypnosis’ was one of Drumcode’s most vital under-the-radar releases of 2019. Its creator, Veerus, returns to the mothership for another top-shelf offering. The Italian’s career is a brilliant slow burner, releasing EPs sparingly over the course of his 14-year career. There’s a narrative quality to each track too, the artist reveling in a drama-laden call-and-response dynamic. All three cuts from his latest ‘System’ EP are made for big moments. The title track was created with Amsterdam’s holy rave cauldron the Gashouder in mind, and was completed by Veerus just a few days before ADE last year. Balancing on a knife’s edge between tension and euphoria, the track’s twisted synth lines sent an energy surge through the iconic venue. ‘Year’ is a deadly one-two combo of synapse-searing synths and sharp drums as jagged waves of sound throb with panoramic effect. It was a captivating highlight of Beyer’s set at Amnesia in Milan in February, the final session before the lockdown. ‘Pyramid’ was debuted at Beyer’s Cercle performance last September, sound tracking a blissful post-sunset moment at the Théâtre antique de Lugdunum in Lyon.

Veerus has been one of Drumcode’s most consistently outstanding contributors since his debut in 2019 with the ‘Hypnosis’ EP. The Italian makes dramatic techno with a strong narrative arc and his tracks have been favourites of Adam Beyer’s used with thrilling effect from Awakenings to Cercle. ‘Yard’ marks his fourth DC EP and continues his graft in the studio, refining his sound and technical approach to share his most heartfelt work to date. The title track was a stirring weapon when played by Beyer at the Printworks show in October and centres around an enveloping bassline, powerful chords and atmosphere-building pads. ‘Bypass’ is a laser-kissed gem that had fists going skywards during Beyer’s Awakening set at ADE week. ‘Nobody’ is Veerus at his most creative and playful; this is just as much a grandiose composition as an effective dance track and inspired a collective roar of approval when played at Creamfields set this summer.

Veezo is a beatmaker out of Milan. A wizard on the Rhodes, he grew up on a healthy diet of jazz before branching out and undertaking collaborations with a number of hip hop acts. He began experimenting with sampling, and exploring analogue sounds - introducing him to the world of modular systems, refining his studio skills and defining the artist we see now.

Vega Trails is a new project from double-bassist and composer Milo Fitzpatrick, a founder member of Portico Quartet, who has also performed with the likes of Nick Mulvey and Jono McCleary and features saxophonist Jordan Smart (Mammal Hands, Sunda Arc) in a richly powerful duo bringing together two powerfully charismatic musicians. The project which takes its name from Carl Sagan's science fiction novel 'Contact' (a book about signals of new life detected from the Vega system) andwas born out of a desire to bring the elements of bass and melody to the foreground in their rawest form and Fitzpatrick explains that he deliberatelychose the stripped back approach.

Stranded in Foggy Times both continues and completes the trilogy that began back in 2015, with The Man with the Foggy Eyes, before broadening the horizons with last year’s release of The Land of the Foggy Skies. This final chapter returns to the same conceptual landscape as its predecessors, but also sees Verb T and Illinformed returning to a more classic approach to album making.

In spite of its concept, the Foggy Trilogy is something of a personal outpouring for Verb T, with the original aim being to vicariously discuss the trials and tribulations that play a part in his life, including his struggles with chronic illness and the feeling of alienation from leaving his hometown, while also reflecting on the state of the world as a whole.

As with the previous albums, Stranded in Foggy Times finds Illinformed moving away from the more rugged sound that has shrouded the British scene over the last few months, thanks to his collaborations with the likes of Datkid and Wish Master, instead providing Verb T with an arguably more mellow backdrop. From the string and piano driven introduction on Legacy, to the blissful head-nod vibes of the closing track, Blind Faith, the union between beats and rhymes sits at the perfect level.

The album also boasts one of the most impressive guestlists of the year, one that is very much a product of both players’ worlds. Thanks to Illinformed’s Bristol connection, there are features from the likes of Res One, Datkid, Leaf Dog, Smellington Piff and Chillman, as well as some locally sourced cuts from DJ Rogue. While on Verb T’s side of the fence, we have features from Rye Shabby and Moreone, along with a collaboration that reignites the same creative spark he found in his early days, as King Kashmere steps into the booth on Feeling Strange.

All in all, Stranded in Foggy Times does exactly what it sets out to do, by drawing the trilogy to a close while also providing insights into Verb T’s personal world and the world at large. The fact that it also happens to be one of the strongest rap albums of the year is the icing on the cake.

Boris Bunnik returns to the Fluid Electronics label after his remix for Rob Belleville. This is his first outing under the Vernon Felicity alias since 2016. Boris - better known for his work as Conforce and Versalife, steps up with four cuts joining the dots between sci-fi-infused scenarios, rapturous synthy vistas and AI-powered club dynamism, bound to have dance floors phasing in a paradox of hi-intensity wares and textures-splattered sonics tailored to maximal effect.

Breaking the EP in, "Chord Memory" lets out a thunder of raucous machine gargling. Navigating a league of its own, halfway proper muscular EBM and no-frills techno from the deep, this one attacks pedal to the metal with great loads of aggro kicks, rattling snares and monster bass swells surging upon the ravers with ominous presence. Doped on laser blasts and liquid-like vintage keyboardry, "Hindsight" blazes a trail of dusty acidness across, laying it thick with FX-riddled stabs and octave-shifting pads out an oddly distorted VHS score.

Flip it over and here is "Contemplation" - a synth-heavy, Chicagoan style mover, smoothly drifting into Blade Runner-esque hyperspace as bars run by. From minute first to last, VF serves up a premium skittish and playful disco chug endowed with the right dose of neon-doused, widescreen escapism to keep the brain and body organically synced. Final number "Alternate" tops it off on an even breezier note, pulling out an impeccable arsenal of crudely dressed hats, solar-powered keys and stealth sub bass moves that simply do not let loose on their raving prey until all lights have gone out for good.
