At first listen, The Practice of Love, Jenny Hval's seventh full-length album, unspools with an almost deceptive ease. Across eight tracks, filled with arpeggiated synth washes and the kind of lilting beats that might have drifted, loose and unmoored, from some forgotten mid-'90s trance single, The Practice of Love feels, first and foremost, compellingly humane. Given the horror and viscera of her previous album, 2016's Blood Bitch, The Practice of Love is almost subversive in its gentleness_a deep dive into what it means to grow older, to question one's relationship to the earth and one's self, and to hold a magnifying glass over the notion of what intimacy can mean. As Hval describes it, the album charts its own particular geography, a landscape in which multiple voices engage and disperse, and the question of connectedness_or lack thereof_hangs suspended in the architecture of every song. It is,an album about "seeing things from above_almost like looking straight down into the ground, all of these vibrant forest landscapes, the type of nature where you might find a porn magazine at a certain place in the woods and everyone would know where it was, but even that would just become rotting paper, eventually melting into the ground."Prompted by an urge to find a different kind of language to express what she was feeling, the songs on Love unfurl like an interior dialogue involving several voices. Friends and collaborators Vivian Wang, Laura Jean Englert, and Felicia Atkinson surface on various tracks, via contributed vocals or through bits of recorded conversation, which further posits the record itself as a kind of ongoing discourse. "The last thing I wrote, which was my new book, had quite an angry voice," says Hval, "The voice of an angry teenager, furious at the hierarchies. Before the release of their debut album, we are dropping one more 45 with a newly recorded version of "Audrey Hepburn," a tune off their self titled EP from 2016 and "Fly Fishing", a B side exclusive to this single.

For most of 2017, The Shacks have been honing their skills as a live band playing in and around NYC as well as opening for bands like Chicano Batman and Khurangbin. Some of their studio creations which favor the soft, dream pop side of their repitoire, have been reworked for the live show setting. Audrey Hepburn (Spending All My Time) is an example of that. When we first heard their reworked version at a gig in Brooklyn, we called them the next day and asked them to cut to tape the way they had switched it up for the live set. The result is this catchy single, so strong we had to press a 45 for it.

The B Side, "Fly Fishing" is one of many tracks The Shacks have sitting in the vault. Constantly writing and recording, the group has amassed a huge catalog of music. Fly Fishing starts out with a raucous syncopated intro dropping into a floaty groove The Shacks are know for. It's also their drummer's grandma's favorite song.

“These things happen,” says K. Leimer of Luyu. Listen Until You Understand is a test drive through an obstacle course designed for new instruments, arrangements, juxtapositions, and real-time experiments dedicated to leaving the original impulses untouched and unadorned. Joined at times by digital percussionist Dolphie Stein, the music throws itself against itself without loyalty to genre or form, mashing granular particles into a tremulous spectrum of soundwalls, transitions, noise, distortions, and the occasional clearing. As close to live improvisation as one can get in a multitrack studio setting, Luyu takes generative techniques and drops them into short-form events by building its soundstage in thickets of shifting elements, collapsing phrases, broken signatures, and implied patterns. An outlier in Leimer’s catalog of general stillness and subtle detail, Luyu revels in the bare sound of things usually hidden in the mix. Kerry Leimer founded Palace Of Lights in 1979. Leimer’s work has also been issued by Abstrakce, Autumn, First Terrace, Les Giants, Invisible Inc., Origin Peoples and Rvng. His work is included in the Cherry Red Noise Floor compilation series and his early cassette work is featured in the critically acclaimed VOD box set American Cassette Culture. Leimer has been actively producing music since the mid 1970s—his current catalog includes twenty solo albums plus collaborative albums with Savant, Marc Barreca, and Three Point Circle. Recent soundtracks include work for video artists Cristiane Bouger and Fred Birchman, HBO’s How To With John Wilson and the Netflix documentary John Was Trying to Contact Aliens. His work is included in the collection of The British Library.

Classic UK82 heroes, Special Duties return in 2021. The band started in Colchester, Essex, UK as teen punks with a purpose in 1977. Regardless of their musical inabilities, they were signed in 1980. Charnel House released their debut single, the classic, Violent Society ("Violent Society" b/w "Colchester Council"). After years of practice and two more EPs (Police State and Bullshit Crass both on Rondelet), Special Duties, now with Rondelet Music (Anti-Pasti, Riot Squad, The Fits, The Membranes, The Treats), made a rebellious record with a statement, '77 in '82. As many 'punk' bands (Special Duties' influences The Adverts, The Boys included) were going arty or commercial or defunct, The Class of 1982 was redefining punk; harsher and angrier, eschewing the power-pop which had gripped early bands. Peers - such as Discharge, Abrasive Wheels, Chaos UK, GBH, Exploited, Varukers - embraced speedy riffs and snarls instead of hooks and skinny ties. The late 90's saw a rebirth of Special Duties. With reissues of their debut LP, '77 in ''82 on Captain Oi! and Distorted Truth on Get Back, they band began to leave a stamp in a new generation of punks' consciousness, Special Duties were requested to play UK punk festivals, most notably, Fuck Reading and Holidays in the Sun. This led to '77 in '97 also on Captain Oi! (run by Mark Brennan of The Business, who influenced the band as well). This resurgence also saw the band come stateside to the legendary CBGB's in 1998. A recording was self-released. Another single, "Wembley Wembley!" and a split EP with namesake, Violent Society from Philly. A third rising came in quarantine of 2020. Those recordings now see daylight on this fantastic record, Seven Days a Week Violated Records, also home of original legends and contemporary killers such as The Outcasts, The Violators, Foreign Legion, Vice Squad, The Parasitix, Menace, Red Alert, Eater and more, is now releasing Special Duties.

Marcellus Rayvon Register AKA Babyface Ray, is an American rapper from Detroit, Michigan. In 2010, Babyface Ray joined Team Eastside alongside fellow Detroit rapper, Peezy. Between 2015 and 2017 he released 3 mixtapes followed by an EP, “Unfuckwitable,” which featured EST Gee, Moneybagg Yo, & Kash Doll and charted on the Billboard 200. His debut full-length album, “FACE,” was released in January 2022 and featured appearances by Yung Lean, Icewear Vezzo, G Herbo, 42 Dugg, Pusha T, Wiz Khalifa, and Landstrip Chip. “face” peaked at 21 on the Billboard 200 & #2 on the Independent Albums chart. Factory Benelux presents a box set collection of the first five albums released by the celebrated Factory Classical imprint in 1989, featuring modern classical works composed by Benjamin Britten, Elliott Carter, Paul Hindemith, Theodore Lalliet, Gyorgy Ligeti, Steve Martland, Olivier Messiaen, Francis Poulenc, Dmitri Shostakovich and Michael Tippett.

The new Factory Benelux clamshell box set includes a 24 page booklet featuring the original Factory commissioned liner notes from 1989, as well as a contemporary essay by writer Stuart Huggett and an interview with Tony Wilson. Each individual CD is housed in a card wallet which reproduces the original artwork by designers Peter Saville, Trevor Key, Ben Kelly, Mark Farrow, Neville Brody and Trevor Johnson.

The 5 CDs have been newly re-mastered in 2022 by Peter Beckmann at Technology Works.

Curated by Durutti Column viola player John Metcalfe, the performers include the Kreisler String Orchestra, German pianist Rolf Hind, The Duke Quartet and oboist Robin Williams, with Steve Martland’s material performed by Residentie Orkest Den Haag and pianists Gerard Bouwhuis and Cees Van Zeeland.

Explained Factory founder Tony Wilson: ‘The idea I had in mind was people like Peter Saville, the Factory designer, and his girlfriend - art school kids brought up with Bowie and Roxy Music, into punk, maybe they find acid house interesting, but they’re looking for something else. For people like them or younger, there is no easy way into classical music, because it’s all quite exclusive. They’re scarcely likely to read Gramophone magazine, or make head or tail of it if they did.’

‘I was a relatively angry young man at that time,’ adds Metcalfe, ‘and chose to channel some of that into a rather naïve disapproval of standard classical industry practices. The white tie and tails and very, very boring, reproductions of Constable paintings on album covers, all that stuff. So I had a chat with Tony and he said, “Off you go, fill your boots”.’

Largely drowned out by relentless Acid House beats and faddish Madchester guitar rock in 1989, the bold, contrarian Factory Classical catalogue is now ripe for re-appraisal by much the same audience identified by Wilson. Indeed since 1989 Metcalfe has worked as an arranger for artists such as Peter Gabriel, U2, Blur, Coldplay and Bat for Lashes, as well as performing and recording with the Max Richter Ensemble. Sadly contemporary composer Steve Martland passed away in 2013.

For decades, the upper Midwest of the United States has been a hotspot for hardcore bands that bend genres and refuse to stick to tired formulas, producing acts like Hüsker DÜ and DIE Kreuzen. Milwaukee’s BIG Laugh is here to continue that tradition, with a sound that finds them as much at home playing DIY shows in dingy basements as playing large clubs alongside some of hardcore and punk’s luminaries. Self-described “punks who listen to JUDGE,” BIG Laugh works in a wide array of influences—from the blazing speed and harsh noises of Japanese rippers like Gauze and Bastard to the mosh-ready impact of Nyhc bands like Burn and Alone IN A CROWD—and even some melodic sensibilities akin to the aforementioned Hüsker DÜ. La Castanya is releasing “Gran Sur” on vinyl for the first time, originally released on CD in 2004. Very Limited/Non-Returnable. Hello Cuca, inspired by the DIY philosophy and the Riot Grrrl movement, toured the United States with The Make Up (Dischord / K Records) and Spain with Bratmobile (Lookout! Records / Kill Rock Stars). Hello Cuca released on vinyl a handful of EPs between the late nineties and the two thousands and then an album released on CD, Gran Sur, an out of print release right up until now that La Castanya is going to release it on vinyl for the first time. In Gran Sur Lidia Damunt (the same Lidia Damunt who has now gone solo) was joint by her sister Mabel Damunt on the bass and Alfonso Melero (the same Alfonso Melero from Villarrobledo’s much-missed indie aristocracy) on drums. She sang Mabel’s lyrics about a place in-between the Spanish Levante Coast and the West Coast of the United States. A place for Mabel’s dream-theories about love and sisterhood and how we learn how to be people when we talk to each other, when a name is given to us, when we do things and let the others see we have done them.
