Benny Howell (aka DJ Subaru) is a UK based producer, DJ and overall promoter of good times who's undoubtedly propelling a new generation of music appreciation with an honourable respect for the earlier beginnings of club culture. Benny Howell might also be the pioneer of a new post-Brexit Eurodance genre, with "Surrender", a catchy Pop oriented production with strong influences from Italodisco and HiNRG, written and produced entirely from scratch with best friend Bella Quirin who co-wrote the lyrics after a break up with her ex. Innocent and charming lyrics over 120's BPM drum machine and a simple melody that you'll be humming in the back of your mind for days to come. Equipped with a Yamaha Tx81z, a few guitar pedals and a makeshift bedroom studio, "Surrender" is the product of a dear friendship between the two music lovers, as per Benny's recount: "Bella came and sung on the track in my bedroom during one of the gaps between Covid lockdowns after I asked her at the pub if she knew any singers and said me of course, and we went from just friends to best friends." The remix on the B-side by Castro takes a darker turn into what almost sounds like a Techno version with heavy dubbed out effects taking the "Surrender" theme through an unhinged Ketamine flanger vortex. Although all three tracks offer the listener valuable insight into the level of music production ingenuity that was going on in Japan at the time, it's "Electric City" that really stands out as an unmistakably unique dancefloor track, where the then teenage female vocalists from Shohjo-Tai are left out and a galloping 120bpm beat sets a blank canvas for a number of unexpected elements to present: completely unorthodox accents in a wide range of unidentifiable sounds, a very enthusiastic electric guitar solo, the Ennio Morricone-esque Spaghetti Western vocal moments, all of which get contrasted with a blissful chorus that reminds one that this is somehow still a collaboration with a Japanese female idol band from the 80s. A hard track to forget even in the less sober dancefloors, it is no surprise that it would be a fundamental secret weapon in the repertoire of diggers such as Dea Barandana. Can't go wrong, buy on sight. Remastered with new artwork.

After a career as a comic book artist as well as a musician in the bands Zoppo and Avec-A, Yuri Landman began designing experimental musical instruments. Based on prepared guitar techniques, he built his first instrument in 2001 to solve the inaccuracy of instant preparations. In 2006 he got in contact with Liars. Developed over six years of prototyping, he fully realised the Moodswinger for them with commissions from numerous other musicians to follow. A Gesamtkunstwerk consisting of a DIY-workshop where people build their own electric instrument and often followed by an afternoon rehearsal on the second day and a 40 minute ensemble performance with multiple Home Swingers, drums, basses, and guitars in the tradition of the Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca compositions. Electric Taal Band was a project that came out of the Covid pandemic, a necessity to work alone and some happenstance. I had stumbled on a box of Punjabi records for sale at Bollywood Music Center on Gerrard St. East in Little India -- a store where I had been buying hindi film records for years. I wasn't too familiar with Punjabi music beyond UK Bhangra, took a chance and loved the records; over some time I bought every Punjabi record in the store. I studied the records and bought a tumbi from Kala Kendar, a shop next to the music store that sold instruments. I learned the tumbi from Youtube videos and copying the sounds on the records.

Over time I acquired both a vintage Radel Talometer and electronic Tanpura locally via classifieds and experimented with integrating their sounds into the recordings as well. The basic idea was to take these machines designed for practice, which had their own incredible sound due to technological limitations and apply them to Indian music. Everything I had heard of these machines in recordings and videos only used them in an abstract electronic context. The main intent was and still is to use these sounds in collaboration with South Asian musicians and vocalists in the Toronto area, but this album came from both casual exploration and experimentation with the tools, as well as an inability to collaborate in-person due to pandemic restrictions at the time.

When State Faults reemerged in 2019 after a five year hiatus (years they spent playing with their indie-punk side project Slow Bloom), they burst back onto the scene with their third full-length LP "Clairvoyant" in hand. Led Er Est emerged from a series of jam sessions that core members Shawn O'Sullivan and Sam De La Rosa started having in early 07, using bass guitar and some cheap drum machines and synths. They were inspired to record music largely by 70's synth prog, and 80's lo-fi electronics and industrial music. Owen Hutchinson joined the band for their first live show, at the Wierd party that December. In November of 09' Wierd Records released their debut full length. While the group shared an aesthetic with much of the British shoegaze scene, and occasionally recalled the spirit of early 4AD and Factory Records, they certainly carved out a beautiful noise of their own. During their austere six-year life, half string inspired an underground music scene in their hometown, and gained a small but loyal following from beyond the desert. HALF STRING's first demo was hand delivered to Independent Project Records' Bruce Licher during the summer of 1992. Impressed, Licher released the three songs as the Eclipse 7" single on his revered post-punk fine art imprint. Matt Kruse joined on second guitar in 1993, adding another layer of texture andintricate melody to the band's broadening sound. This was evident on "Oval", HALF STRING's second single, and the subsequent "Tripped Up Breathing" EP, both released by IPR in 1994. A lot can change in a decade.

The Acwlp sessions were certainly that of a tumultuous time.

Rife with seedy taverns, eviction, travel and romantic misadventures manifold my victories and lessons were nothing if not hard-won. I felt the pressure to make something definitive while constantly seeking to become the artist I was meant to be. Listening back today there’s many things I can see as prelude or perhaps I was earning my initial moniker of Premonition because many things did indeed come to pass.

The album’s only feature was Curly Castro years before ShrapKnel was ever a discussion. We really parlayed that track into something special huh? I recall fondly taking the J to Cav’s crib to listen to beats with Quelle. Quasi routinely linking with Dove and finally emailing the then enigmatic Small Pro. I met Fresh Kils at Sxsw that year and picked the weirdest beat in his pack. Not sure he ever liked that song but the miles we went on to log together was something to behold at the very least. Dug out one of the oldest beats A.M. Breakups ever sent me and pretty sure he laughed when I asked for the stems. Green and I further established our sonic link as he helped me piece together a mosaic that was without a doubt unapologetically… me.

I released this record myself and since only have truly done vinyl business with folks I’ve known over a decade. Woods & Backwoodz, Ceschi & Fake Four, Dove & Fused Arrow and now with my good friend Zilla Rocca and Three Dollar Pistol. It’s always more fun to win together. This wasn’t a perfect record then and it isn’t now but that’s never the point of making one. It serves as an accurate snapshot of an artist coming into his own and scripting a prologue to bigger things to come. You hear what’s next all over this record and the things I’d leave behind. Happy to share it in a find physical manifestation all these years later. A lot can change in a decade.
