Deaf Chonky is an Israeli Folk, garage & punk duo formed by Adi Bronicki and Tami Kaminsky. The two members of the band grew up in Rehovot (Israel) where they met and rehearsed. Their name (which means “Girls” in Russian) was given to them by Kaminsky’s father. The band’s musical influences go from garage punk to Russian folk music. Whilst most will know Dave Maclean as the drummer, producer and de-facto leader from the Mercury-nominated, UK four-piece Django Django, Maclean is first and foremost a DJ and record collector. Maclean’s eclectic tastes have long been looking for a suitable outlet and today sees a long-awaited dream finally come to fruition, as Maclean announces the launch of his record label Kick + Clap. Kick + Clap’s debut release comes courtesy of fellow Scot producer Neil Landstrumm, with an EP entitled “Knights of Shame". Well known for his early Peacefrog Records’ classics such as “Brown by August", Landstrumm has been navigating unchartered musical territories since the 1990’s. Circling mostly around experimental techno, Landstrumm is also know for exploring grime and dubstep, long before it was the done thing and has released nine albums across legendary labels such as Peacefrog, Tresor, Mosquito, Planet Mu, Sonic Groove and his own imprint, Scandinavia.

Some time in 2018, the mighty AUF TOGO (members of In Flagranti and Mytron & Ofofo) met with the fierce BECKER & MUKAI (w/t members of Zongamin, Vanishing Twin, Floating Points live band, JeanGa & George) in the Sounds And Sons Studios in Shoreditch for a couple of long recording sessions, where they brought together drum machines and guitars, percussions and synthesisers.
These two outfits getting together in the studio was a match made in heaven, as one long improvised take gave way to another, each protagonist picking up a different instrument each time, recording hooks and beats and dub effects, and ultimately joined their production skills to create these four gems.
Mixing influences that run from balearic beat to the late 80’s Manchester sound, from psychedelic rock and space disco, this record is a singular piece of rugged mid tempo electronic music that works both on a dance floor in Berlin, at sunset in Ibiza or in a living room in London.
The artwork was hand-drawn by Susumu Mukai and is inspired by 90s reggae dub clashes.

Southern soul singer Z.Z. Hill was Kent/Modern’s main artist in the latter half of the 60s. In 1967 the company recorded him on an LP of soul classics and rightly chose Bettye Swann’s hit from only a few months before as one of the tracks. The label may have missed a commercial trick as his male-angle on the marvellous song gave it a new dimension and would surely have fared well as a 45. The UK licensors Action Records spotted the song’s potential and it was well received, although the much smaller UK soul market of the time could rarely achieve big sales. Since its release more soul fans have become aware of its quality and at last it is available again for discerning collectors.

Peggy Woods’ classic Northern Soul stomper was first on 45 in 1988 as a 100 Club anniversary single. With only approximately 400 pressed it was inevitable this and other such singles would become sought-after. Here is Peggy in her original glory singing her Kent/Modern masterpiece.

Blending vintage recording equipment and instruments with tweaks from the modern studio, the duo presents a loose, almost improvised sound that plays organically within the rigid confines of house music. Echocord sub-label Echo Echo continues this July with Orbite’s ‘Interstellar’ EP, a threetracker from the Berlin- based producer. Orbite is a brand new project founded in Berlin, Germany with a nod towards the raw, dubby sounds often heard across the clubs in the city, and where better to inaugurate things than the recently launched sub-label of Copenhagen’s Echocord, one of the leading imprints in the realms of Dub Techno, home to pioneering acts like Rod Modell/Deepchord, Pole and Fluxion who have paved the way for Orbite’s own twist on the genre. The ethereal pad textures of ‘Skylar’ lead on the package, deftly evolving alongside bubbling synth tones, swelling chords and shuffled percussion to create a create dynamically unfolding six and a half minute cut. ‘Moment’ follows, edging things further into dubbed-out territories with heavily delayed dub echoes and mesmeric spoken word poetry intertwining to create a, hypnotic beatless soundscape. ‘Organi’ closes the record with emotive, billowing pads, warm bell like tones and vocal murmurs running alongside swinging shakers and stripped-back micro-house percussion.
