Necrodeath is one of the most important and outrageous names in extreme metal; formed back in 1984, it is one of the first extreme metal bands originating in Italy. Bye Bye is a three track offering from Philadelphia based sextet Blood, that rarely stays put in one style for long. All three songs - first single Money Worries, Luck and Borstal Field - were recorded by the band throughout the pandemic providing a uniting force whilst touring remained impossible. The tracks are a testament to the unforgiving and rewarding process of self-recording. The band found great relief in finally having the time to flesh out an experimental atmosphere without the constraint of paid studio time. Blood is proud of the work they've made, but it is imperative to mention that all three tracks were brought to life in a way not formerly thought possible by the mixing brilliance of Nancy Conforti. First single "Money Worries" finds Blood slingshotted over an open letter to their landlord. What starts as a clear threat to an obvious albeit deserving villain, soon caves into an acoustic respite, in which the nightmare of financial ruin becomes lullaby.

This is an album about Donald Trump - his dubious rise in politics, his capricious behaviour while in office and the motley cast of characters he has surrounded himself with. It's not exactly a protest record, though it is shot through with anger. It's definitely not a joke, though some of it is darkly funny. It is a tragedy and it is a farce. The songs are sung from different points of view, almost as if it's a Donald Trump funk musical. One advisor sells Trump on the idea of a border wall. Another one feels he can't quit because of the chaos that might follow. Rex Tillerson fumes at his plummeting status. Psychiatrists fret about the President's mental stability. Hillary Clinton laments her loss. Trump himself brags and equivocates in his own unique, blustering style. School of Language is David Brewis, who also makes music with his brother Peter as Field Music. This is the third School of Language album, following on from Sea From Shore in 2008 and Old Fears in 2014. 45 was written and recorded in a little less than two months during gaps in the schedule at Field Music's studio in Sunderland. It was inspired by Bob Woodward's book Fear, articles in the Washington Post, The New Yorker and The New York Times and by Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight. It was also inspired by James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, The Meters, Otis Redding and Free.

The eleventh installment of Mutual Rytm opens with the rolling grooves and choppy vocals of 'Blokhut', which flows smoothly into the highly effective drums and strings of 'Sea Choy', while 'Bruusk' closes the first side of the vinyl with a hypnotic, well-crafted 90s influenced techno anthem. On the flip side, the title track 'Eastbook Isle' is all about its rolling bassline, retro/electro influences and a mesmerizing melody, while on the B2 'Planet Phatt' closes the record perfectly with a classic old-school sounding cut, made to be the last track of the set or those early morning moments. Over atmospheric instrumentation expanded by cinematic structure and pacing, Pearlty presents Knifeplay somewhere between dream-pop influenced shoegaze and lofty slowcore, never fully committing to one or the other in its insistence on creating an immersive, organic world.

Originally released in 2019, Knifeplay’s vivid debut Pearlty documents songwriter Tj Strohmer’s expressions of early adulthood in what he describes as “the journey from innocence to experience.”

Written during a time of immense inspiration, Strohmer was able to peel himself away from detached nihilism, uncovering the physicality and therapeutic powers of songwriting. Newly emboldened by this discovery and the talented community surrounding him, Strohmer channeled this revelation into his work, taking Knifeplay from a bedroom experiment that merely wrote songs to a more substantial project with a purpose.

Pearlty’s various climactic passages, like those heard on the impressionist album opener “Tears”, envelop listeners in textured walls of distorted guitar and noisy breakdowns, a distinct hallmark of shoegaze – but Knifeplay’s compositions go far beyond such conventions.

Also featured are downtempo compositions – such as the tribute track “Angel” – that call on a range of influences, from grunge to lofi pop, all the way back to slowcore. Layers of Strohmer’s falsetto lilt adorn the songs with another dimension of sentimentality, while rounding out the sonic vastness of the group’s emotionally enrapturing style, lending impressive depth to the band’s debut full-length.

Finally, the 300.000 V.K. project's album, DER Sturm, has seen the light of day. The material for it was initially compiled around 2010, but the recordings were lost and then sporadically leaked out in various forms over the next ten years, until two years ago when a full album was assembled from the fragments. The release was then further delayed by the Covid epidemic and, additionally, for a further year by vinyl pressing delays. The album is now here at last, more or less in its original form, also with the design, conceived over a decade ago.

DER Sturm is a metaphysical album of techno-electronic provenance, with themes that draw on planetary, atmospheric, cosmic, interstellar communication and the journey of radio waves, yet it also features tracks such as Grozny and Exodus, which directly touch on more Earthly themes (war and refugees).

300,000 V.K. or Dreihunderttausend verschiedene Krawalle (Three Hundred Thousand Various Uproars) is a project originally established in 1982 as a more experimental offshoot of the Laibach Kunst music section, defined in Laibach's founding manifesto (10 Items of the Covenant) as a 'retrospective futuristic negative utopia'. The original members and founders of the project were Dejan Knez and Tomaž Hostnik. Later this Laibach 'sub-group' was joined by Iztok Turk and Peter Mlakar, and the first album - 'Peter Paracelsus' - was only released on Nika + Ropot Records in 1994.

In terms of authorship, DER Sturm is a solo project, formally signed by Baron Reichenbach, A. D. Knez and Elk Eber. It is one and the same person, but mentally split and multiplied. Dejan Knez, who is also a co-founder of Laibach, experienced a lightning strike in 1987 and with it a kind of cosmic enlightenment, which unfortunately also resulted in a deepening bipolar disorder, which led to personality stratification and occasional episodes of manic depression. His cooperation with the parent group Laibach therefore became rather disturbed and limited after 1987, and since 2006 it was almost completely interrupted, however he remained a respected member of the group on the symbolic level. In the meantime, he devoted himself more to work on the 300,000 V.K. missiles.

"We almost thought: it could turn out well". L'APPEL DU VIDE from Chemnitz/Germany worked two nerve-wracking years on their Debut-EP. Now their "Abwärtsspirale" (downward spiral) is set into motion. They describe their sound as "Dark Punk" , but that's just scratching the surface. The spectrum reaches from aggressive-gloomy Surf Punk ("Das bin ich nicht" / that's not me) to brittle, repetitive and noisy ("Aufmerksamkeit" / attention) and hymnical-melodic Post Punk ("Delirium"). "Das Programm" (the program), a bittersweet romance in times of total surveillance, is unusual calm and melancholic thanks to an 60ies-organ and background vocals from Mara. In their lyrics L'APPEL DU VIDE use sparse words and deal with denial, failure and alienation. "Delirium" could be a soundtrack to the global pandemic, but was written in 2019. The songs were recorded by Flatty. Refinement came from Max Herrmann/Gloven Studio Leipzig (Mix) and Mikey Young (Mastering).
