The final solo album from our dearest Frank Hammersland (1969-2023) "The Ocean Sleeps Alone" will be released on 11. October. He almost managed to record the entire album before his passing, and he recorded vocals for 8 of the 10 songs. Marthe Wulff and Sergeant Petter took care of vocals on the final two. The band on the album is mostly his regular backing band, the Love Connection, with a little help from friends like Thom Hell, Frode Unneland and more. Flour is the long-awaited, much-anticipated, full-course follow-up to Buzzsaws—Brower’s debut album from 2018. Sure, there’s been tasty snacks and treats to sustain folks along the way: several singles worth, and a totally authentic “Live” album. But this is the fresh new long-player platter you’ve hungered for.

Again, recorded entirely by Nat, at home and in the practice space (that is, various different practice spaces, due to unruly landlords) in Brooklyn. The recording project spanned several years due to touring, gigging, and rehearsing with the myriad of bands that form the Brower Cinematic Universe (including the live band, Brower; plus Josephine Network, Nancy, Metalleg, and The Wand-ers), not to mention working the many day-jobs it requires to barley sustain life in NYC.

Flour is benefited by this kind of “slow” practice, where time lends itself to exploration. One gets a sense of Brower’s freedom to stretch out and try new things, new instrumentation, and take a deeper dive into the songwriting always brewing between his ears.

In Brower’s kitchen, his recipe for Flour was created, tasted, tested, reworked, revisited, and rebuilt—from scratch—to the delight of the most choosy of rock ‘n’ roll gourmands and punk rock bon vivants. As they say, good food takes time. Now, once again, Brower is served.

In 2021, Will Marsh ditched his music career, packed his bags and headed to New Orleans to pursue an MFA. Pandemic brain had firmly set in, so while Marsh dove into his work with Habitat for Humanity, he also found himself dazed and confused amidst such a turbulent time. Tamás Kátai has a vision that extends far beyond his native Hungary, but Thy Catafalque’s twelfth album is tied to the past in more ways than one. Whereas his previous album returned to the heavier days of Thy Catafalque, XII takes Kátai on a more figurative journey. The album unfolds like a dark night of the soul, whisked away by the dreamy-yet-haunting opener “Piros kocsi, fekete éj”. “Run with me, life / Whisper the tales”, Attila Bakos sings in Hungarian. His cleans soar over the airwaves, reappearing with ease 15 years after he first joined Thy Catafalque for the project’s underground breakout Róka Hasa Rádió. More old friends join Kátai on this journey. A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek features 20+ guest musicians, including familiar faces from inside and outside of the Hungarian metal scene. Violins, cello and clarinet bring the comforts of home. Still, the road can be quite harsh. “Mindenevő” is consumed with humanity’s self-destructive appetite, fueled by mechanized blast beats and distorted downpicking that recalls the fiery black metal from which Thy Catafalque was originally forged in 1998. Hungarian history looms behind the album’s most crushing moments. The coal blackened chugger “Vasgyár” is named after the rusted-out ironworks that once fueled the country’s economy. In the video for the album’s title track and lead single, Kátai runs through not only his hometown but surreal scenes from past and present issues that lie beneath the surface of the countryside. Florida producer, multi-instrumentalist and coder Tristan Whitehill - AKA Euglossine - continues to surprise with his latest record. "Biggest Part" is a departure from previous styles - the early interstellar sound design, serrated onslaughts, and later labyrinthine meme jazz and rain soaked bossa guitar.
The songs here are perhaps his most musical - and vulnerable - to date. Familiar glow-worm melodies and meandering bass are now supplemented with lead vocals, big hooks, and backing singers (!?). Tristan's storytelling has always been rooted in imagined worlds, but the cast of characters and magical interludes that bubble up from "Biggest Part" are his most soulful and relatable yet, for all their fairytale bizarre-ness.
Recommended if you like Steely Dan, Beatrix Potter, Untitled Goose Game.

Liquor Talkin’ is the debut studio album from Texas-based country artist Don Louis. Born in Irving and raised on a 12-acre farm in Commerce, Texas, Don Louis learned the meaning of work early on. He grew up tending to livestock, singing along to George Strait and Al Green, and playing football. Done was an All-District defensive end for Commerce High School and played on scholarship at Ouachita Baptist and Southern Arkansas. The two-piece rock band Taika’s (帯化) 3rd album ‘On Chitou Jichi’ (御池塘自治), originally released in 2023, is now available on vinyl. The album’s folkloric vocals and krautrock-inspired repetition swirl together with environmental sounds, creating an immersive atmosphere. The interplay between the post-Fourth World Revival soundscapes and the raw, earthy physicality rooted deep within the music blurs the line between the nostalgic and the novel, each reflecting echoes of the other.

In this album, Taika explores the residual sense of "foreignness" within the now-commonplace rock band format in Japan, re-examining it and injecting new possibilities for "translation" and reinterpretation into those gaps.

This release includes a large poster-style lyric sheet. Additionally, it comes with a download code for the digital version of ‘On Chitou Jichi,’ as well as a code for a destructive remix of Taika’s track “Kouraku Biyori” by the up-and-coming dub techno artist Yo, who is signed to Taika’s independent label, Zōen Keikaku.

The punk/hardcore/metal quartet Utflod has been called “Bergen’s angriest band”, and with good reason. My Heart, an Inverted Flame, the synth-doom duo of Andee Connors (Thrill Jockey signed A Minor Forest) and Marc Kate (I Am Spoonbender, Never Knows) eschew traditional doom weaponry (i.e. guitar and bass) entirely, to generate something at once doom-adjacent, but at the same time, wholly other: a series of devastatingly heavy, seismic rituals conjured up via Connors' caveman-crush drumming and Kate's blown out, wall-of-sound synthesizers. The result: an art-damaged, cosmos-destroying, wildly psychedelic rite of dolorous, droning dirgery, churning, black hole heaviness and sublime, cinematic annihilation. Apparitions is the sound of violent contradiction. The synthesis of molten drones with cataclysmic percussion - worlds that are so at odds with one another, they become unified in moving stillness. Simultaneous divine ecstasy and extreme horror. Captured live in their raw form by Seth Manchester, this duo of improvisations is an exploration of the far-reaching bands of the dynamic spectrum, resulting in overflowing and incandescent energy – like the sun perpetually giving off heat.
