Since 2016, Milkman has been a pioneer in India’s ever-evolving electronic music scene. From building the foundations of India’s warehouse-rave culture, to consistently curating international and local artists at the forefront of the electronic musical underground, Milkman has quickly become a formidable force. Both editions of its festival, ‘Terminal 1’ were highly well-received, and this year, Milkman brings its first ever release as a label to the world. Azu Hoyvoy’s music feels like it has a toehold in the world of left-field dance-floors, while also being comfortable in any post-apocalyptic sensorium you can dream up. This peculiar trait should not come as a surprise. The chaos, darkness, and simultaneous beauty of the city from which he hails all make for a hard cocktail of deep-uplifting-frightening-introspective fervor, spilling appropriately into this record. The twenty-three-year-old Mumbai-native’s previous music is largely dominated by RnB and Soul, and in some ways feels like the proverbial Jekyll to Future Literature’s Mr. Hyde. To the extent that Azu’s previous incarnation still resides in his darker counterpart, it shows in Future Literature’s multi-faceted grooves and syncopations that are relatively unique in this spectrum of electronic music. This collection of tunes finds a very suitable corner in the eclectic and forward-thinking home of Milkman, and the result is an enjoyably mind-expanding, if sometimes disconcerting record.

No-one knows why or how long they have been there but maps and reports have appeared over the years thanks to a handful of wide-eyed whistleblowers. Often hiding in plain sight behind faceless logos and Haga fencing, these tunnels are said to contain the government’s dark explorations, store unspoken cargo and even house extraterrestrial experiments. Subterra Highway is the debut EP from D3u5e & GAV. A tribute to conspiracy theories, obsession and corporate illusion. An important moment for both artists and Programm's first release after our sampler last June. Each track of the EP takes you down a different path. I Love It When A Band Comes Together…The one thing that has kept most artists sane during the pandemic is writing and creating. With canceled shows, closed venues and lost incomes, the pandemic was bad news for many music artists. But it wasn't only bad news in 2020, as many artists used their struggle to do what they do best during difficult times: create great music. This is why N.E.W.S. Records, a record company based in Ghent releases 'Bad News. Good News.'. A limited edition vinyl record with great songs that couldn't be played live because of the pandemic. The record itself is made from the ashes of newspapers and magazines containing the bad news that hit the music industry in 2020 (and prevented artists from performing live). As proof that great music always survives bad news, no matter how desperate things can get. To create the records, N.E.W.S. Records worked with And Vinyly, a UK-based company specialized in pressing vinyl records with ashes. Many artists collaborated on the project and shared their insight on how the bad news happening in the music world influenced their music, like Johannes Genard, lead singer of School is Cool: "The one good thing about bad times is that they open new perspectives on things you've grown accustomed to, and that is exactly our core business as artists: comforting during challenging times; challenging during comfortable times and finding new ways to look at old things." Normally, an artistic shift for a creator is signalled by a withdrawal from the rat race, a monkish retreat to a simpler environment where a mind can ponder the elusive creative progress. But for artist and producer Julie Campbell aka LoneLady, the jump from Manchester’s crumbling outskirts to set up a new studio in an 18th century shooting range in central London had the inverse effect. Despite the metropolitan bustle outside, her third album Former Things comes off as an LP of isolation; without backing band and without intrusion. Remarkably, it’s also LoneLady’s most unapologetically pop-minded release to date.

The taut, acerbic skronk of Campbell’s Telecaster still scrapes Former Things with embellishments of no-wave sensibilities, but a new-found fascination with hardware, drum machines and synthesisers opens a whole new realm of possibility for the musician. ‘(There Is) No Logic’ leads the LP with a sequencer-laced, alt-disco flare, akin to an art-pop era Scritti Politti track, propelled with endless forward motion by a wiry funk spirit. The detail of each pin-sharp sample, crisp-dried digitised snare hit and squelching bass drop invokes an industrial electro edge to the likes of ‘Threats’ and ‘Terminal Ground’, as Campbell’s soul-via-punk vocal delivery brings to mind nothing less than the natural charisma of Prince and David Bowie.

Former Things boldly updates the forgotten sonics of 1980s art-pop, and LoneLady shows exactly how to make them sound brand new again.

One and a half years after his successful debut EP ‘You Like Jazz?’ on Salin Records, Michael Diamond comes back with another fresh and powerful release. Possessing a strong jazz feel albeit cloaked in the veil of a more modern electronic sound, the concept EP ‘Silk Road’ marks the next level for the 22-year-old as he dissolves any boundaries between genres, creating a symbiosis of sounds and textures to take you to places only he knows. We still enjoy remembering how we celebrated the release of his ‘You Like Jazz EP’ back in January 2020, Oxford, where Michael Diamond and Christophe Salin DJed back-to-back alongside live improvisation from saxophonist Alex Wilson. It was at that special weekend that Michael played some of his latest ideas to us over a coffee in his student room. They were the first versions of ‘Through Ivory Gate’ and ‘Adrift Penitent Moors (feat. Alex Wilson)’. Michael later wrote ‘Adrift Corrosive Waters (feat. Alex Wilson)’, ‘Glistening Currents’ and ‘Lullaby of Birdland’ especially for this EP and Salin Records. He decided to team up with his friend Alex Wilson again to provide some serenading sax lines to bring the whole story to life. ‘Through Ivory Gate’ pays homage to Michael’s Indian heritage. Inspired by the theme of Asian culture and the rest of the EP, Michael’s close friend Áine Kim Kennedy crafted an abstract poem to be read alongside listening to the music. It is a beautifully enigmatic verbalisation of the journey the EP intends to take you on. Finally, Daria Salin embodied the music and poem through her painting. The final result is a marriage of artforms; Music, Poetry and Art, all to be absorbed together as a holistic experience. We hope you enjoy your journey through the Silk Road!

We are back with two Soul sides for you for our 11th regular release. Both are a perfect fit for the Soul scene. Side A features Maggtapp's previously unreleased "Because You're You." This is a strong female vox lead sublime Modern Soul groover. It features a steady beat and a spacious arrangement - just drums, bass, electric piano, and organ - that lets the vocals float on top of it. It definitely could be a demo or a temporary mix down, as it could be a bit more fleshed out, but it is really quite good as is. Joe McGlone & The Hot Pepper Band tear up Side B with another previously unreleased gem. "Love I Lost" is an anthemic cover of the Kenny Gamble/Leon Huff tune. It starts with an almost church like organ lifting you into a track that kicks wide open into a 70s Northern Soul floor filler. This is a classic strong Soul lead vocal with a harmony call and response chorus. Just try to keep from tapping your feet and then jumping out on the dancefloor.

This record was Serb's 'Transient Recs 1', released via Listen2me from Bucharest. We were deeply touched by the harsh and progressive sound of the tunes, which at the same time were so musical. After a remix for Fehlzuendung and his LP 'a12 Proceedings' in 2018, things are coming full circle in 2021 as Șerb returns to NDR with 'Transient Recs 2', a collection of tracks produced between 2015 and 2018.

With Bending The Golden Hour, the third album from Memphis, Tennessee’s Aquarian Blood, husband and wife team J.B. Horrell (Ex-Cult) and Laurel Horrell (formerly of the Nots) continue the gorgeously stripped-down and atmospheric direction set on their critically acclaimed previous effort A Love That Leads to War. While Aquarian Blood has roots as a chaotic punk rock six-piece, the band shifted gears after two raucous cassette-only releases on ZAP Cassettes, a pair of seven-inches, and 2017’s Last Nite In Paradise, released on Goner Records. After drummer Bill Curry broke his arm, the Horrells redefined Aquarian Blood, reemerging in early 2018 as the more intimate, mostly acoustic balladeers behind the staccato, fever dream sound of A Love That Leads to War. Like its immediate predecessor, Bending The Golden Hour was recorded at the Horrells’ Midtown Memphis home. Advanced Nature is the second offering from Chicago’s indy electronic label Tres Dias. Completed during a global pandemic this project for Michael Fabiano and Juanne had been a long time coming. The two artists had spoken about wanting to release a record together after years of working side by side in Chicago’s underground music scene. So with the time available during the wildest year in modern history they succeeded in creating a life during wartime record. With hints of industrial, ebm, acid and techno fueling the record. The two aimed to thrust back a bold tapestry of sounds. From sonic visions of a dystopian future to shamenistic prayer infused house. The two managed to flush out a record that has a raw juxtaposition that's grounded in a solid foundation. Plastic Process wades into warehouse territory with its swirling, hypnotic synth lines and brooding bassline. Juanne continues with Before Midnight, a static charged minimal acid track that stabs and reaches out for more. Blanck Mass - the project of musician Benjamin John Power - announces Mind Killer, out Friday, May 14th, via Power’s own Weirding Way label. Recorded in April 2020 at the beginning of the lockdown during the Covid-19 outbreak, Mind Killer is an improvised and original live-streamed performance by Blanck Mass. Using a core setup of the Korg Volca Series (beats, bass, sample & keys), the result is a 40+ minute long voyage into improvised techno and loop-work, warts and all. The only alteration is a slight edit in length so it fits onto a piece of vinyl. The release is extremely limited, one pressing only of 1,000 copies worldwide on black vinyl.

Mind Killer follows the recently released Blanck Mass album, In Ferneaux. The album is made of an archive of field recordings from a decade of global travels. Isolation gave Blanck Mass an opportunity to make connections in a moment when being together is impossible. The record is divided into two long-form journeys that gather the memories of being with now-distant others through the composition of a nostalgic travelogue.

Welcome to Roseville, the 7th studio album by Har Mar Superstar. Sean Tillmann’s latest collection of songs is career defining culmination of life and musical experiences that were heavily influenced by 70s AM gold artists including Todd Rundgren, Elton John, Carole King, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Genesis, Hall and Oates, Meat Loaf, Dory Previn, and ELO. The album came together in the late months of 2020 and is the first true collaborative effort of the whole touring band. It was distance recorded by all of the members in their home studios and the band’s home base, Mid City Studio, in Minneapolis. It has been described as an “existential homecoming” that chronicles Tillmann’s return to life as a Minnesotan over the last 5 years.

Most of the album was produced by bandmates Aaron Baum and Ryan Mach. John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Andrew WK, Har Mar’s 2004 album “The Handler”) returned to Team Har Mar producing “Solid Ghost” and “Hearts Have Misspoken”, and Ryan Olson (Poliça, Gayngs, Swamp Dogg) dropped in to produce “Patchwork Prisms”. Texas musical legends in the making Kam Franklin (The Suffers) and Jackie Venson (one of the greatest guitarists alive) popped by to elevate “Another Century” into a soul duet masterpiece. Denver Dalley (Desaparecidos) and T. Macey Taylor (Bright Eyes, Jenny Lewis, Amanda Shires) appear on “Where We Began” which they helped write on the road while supporting Afghan Whigs a few years back. The band is Nelson Devereaux, Jake Baldwin, Adam Hurlburt, Ethan Elseth, Aaron Baum, and Ryan Mach, and everyone had a hand in co-writing to help make this album a united, genre hopping masterpiece.

The whole album is a cohesive journey designed to be listened to front to back, but each track is strong enough to stand on its own.

Cévennes is a project by Didier Delrieu, a French musician born in 1967. From the mid-90s, he creates his home-studio and begins to create electronic music. In 2000, he left Paris to set up a bookstore specializing in art in Toulouse. He divides his time between his job as a bookseller and musical creation.

Vers Quelques attracteurs étranges is the first album from Cévennes and the first release from Les Disques Solubles.

Slow electronic music composed mostly on Buchla and various analog synthesizers, this work is interested in sound poetry, exotic and cinematographic atmospheres.

The A side is a cover of The Incredible String Band’s Painting Box, originally written by Mike Heron. It’s a collaboration between Beautify Junkyards and Belbury Poly and produced by Jim Jupp. The flipside is an original by Beautify Junkyards, Ritual in Transfigured Time, produced by João Branco Kyron.

Both have a delightfully disorientating sound. The artists complement each other perfectly with their through-the looking-glass electronic psychedelia.

Beautify Junkyards: A talented group of Lisbon based multi-instrumentalists headed up by João Branco Kyron on vocals and keyboards with Helena Espvall (formerly of Espers) on cello, flute and electric guitar, Martinez on vocals, João Moreira acoustic guitar and keyboards, Sergue Ra on bass and Antonio Watts on drums and percussion.

Belbury Poly: Jim Jupp is co-manager of UK label Ghost Box Records. As Belbury poly he’s released EPs, singles and six albums on the label. He is also a member of The Belbury Circle along with Jon Brooks (of The Advisory Circle) and occasional collaborator, John Foxx. He’s remixed tracks for several artists including John Foxx and Bill Ryder-Jones (The Coral) and has co-written a song with Paul Weller for his 2020 album On Sunset.

8-Infinities represents Discos Transgénero’s first contemporary release after several reissues and archival projects. »Journal of Elasticity« sees Richard Scott and Axel Dörner team up again after having previously collaborated live onstage and in the studio for albums such as »Orbit, Dialogue and Trajectory: Live In Berlin« with Thomas Lehn and »Seven Types of Ambiguity.« The duo came together for the 2017 edition of bohemian drips’ very own »Speicher – Festival for Site-Specific Music« to compose and record two sessions—one just by themselves in the empty tank and another one during which they were surrounded by an audience—at the big water reservoir in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, whose acoustic idiosyncrasies have been previously explored by Microtub on »Chronic Shift« (2019, Bd010) and Tomoko Sauvage on »Fischgeist« (2020, Bd013) released also on bohemian drips. Amplified through a hexaphonic sound system, Scott worked with a Eurorack modular synthesiser, an EMS Synthi A and a Ciat-Lonbarde Tetrassi, while Dörner played a a Holton Firebird trumpet with additional live-sampling via Max/MSP and a controller interface developed by Sukandar Kartadinata. Their two compositions are based around flexibility and elasticity and marked by a mutual understanding of the unpredictabilities of each other’s playing. The duo’s process is a fluctuating one that creates friction and tension along the way that are briefly resolved in one moment and then emerge anew while the duo goes on to find new sonic and musical formations in the next one. This compositional approach is further diversified and complicated by the space around the two players, whose acoustic qualities are directly shaped by the presence or absence of other bodies. Side A, »The Near-field of an Accelerating Dislocation,« recorded without any other people present, may be the shorter piece but uses the unique acoustics of the Großer Wasserspeicher as a third actor: while the musicians’ distinct voices converge and diverge, their reverberations overlap in space. »Discontinuity within a Continuum in the Presence of Electromagnetic Fields« on side B sees Dörner and Scott put a heavier emphasis on individual sonic events that are being layered and interwoven in an acoustically more confined setting. What resonates in the latter piece is less the naked brick walls of the reservoir than the physicality of the audience—bodies in space and time to sound. With »Journal of Elasticity,« two boundary-breaking musicians do not so much explore a middle ground between them, but rather use the dynamics of the peculiar spaces around them. Scott and Dörner masterfully construct and play with tonal, temporal, spatial and sonic dualities. The spatial information on this LP was captured with a binaural dummy head microphone (Neumann Ku-100) – listening with headphones is recommended for a more immersive experience.

Jack’s Mannequin is the side project of Andrew McMahon from pop punk band Something Corporate. They recorded three albums during their existence. McMahon crafted some incredible pop songs for the band. Their final album, People and Things, was released in 2011. For People and Things, the band worked with some notable guest musicians, including Jamie Muhoberac, Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction, and Patrick Warren. Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Eric Clapton a.o.) and Jim Scott (The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sting, Wilco a.o.) served as coproducers. Two singles were released: “My Racing Thoughts” and “Release Me”. People and Things received favourable reviews, with critics particularly praising McMahon’s songwriting.

The album is released as a limited edition of 3000 individually numbered copies on orange coloured vinyl, and includes an insert.

Xardinal Coffee is a debut album that is a strikingly contemporary record of slick hip hop, rich textures, idiosyncratic grooves and electronic-tinged wonky R&B. It’s an album that feels intricate and busy but also manages to retain a sense of space and looseness, allowing hypnotic rhythms to unfurl with grace. Exum, aka Antone Chavez Exum Jr. credits the 'genius' of his two producers, Erik Samkopf and Dex Barstad, who he works closely with. Samkopf being the producer responsible for Xardinal Coffee respectively. 'Sam and I don’t really like doing anything that doesn’t have an ückean effect. We’re not from here you know, we’re just getting adjusted’, says Exum of the album’s eclectic sonic palate. 'We love to push the envelope on what is considered quirky, but try not to think about it too much. If me and another are walking down a street, whose going to be first to try something spectacular? Them. My walk will speak.’

However, any sense of weirdness is also married with an infectious and accessible quality. Tracks such as Arrest the Dancer - 'a David Bowie/Lady Gaga-type beat we got from YouTube by a producer named Raixsa' - comes alive with an irresistible funk strut, almost recalling Prince in the swaggering bounce of it. On top of this, Exum’s vocals offer versatility and flexibility, moving from caramel smooth croons to tight rap flows and to enthusiastic bursts of singing.

A sense of texture is palpable throughout too. Portabella Mushroom was recorded on a rare magic mushrooms trip and retains a lysergic and psychedelic quality, sucking the listener up into its swirling atmospheres. Whereas the sparse, minimal and slightly eerie beats of Wolves Eat Wolves was recorded in pitch black and the song takes on that kind of crepuscular vibe, which interspersed with the song’s dark lyrical content - touching upon sex trafficking - further cements this. ‘I take no form’, the artist says, and his formless nature speaks to his willingness to constantly recreate himself as an artist.

A love of words is also clear in Exum’s delivery, with them being carefully placed and sequenced amidst the ambitious soundscapes of the record. 'Writing is precious to me', he says. 'The vulnerability to bleed on paper. While playing with words, styling the same outfit for the 7th day in a row.'

Initially Exum looked up producer Erik Samkopf to work with when he’d had a temporary falling out with his previous producer Barstad. In love with Samkopf’s work with Pen Gutt, Exum took a punt and flew from his hometown of Richmond, Virginia to Oslo, Norway to work with him. As Exum and Barstad patched things up, Exum and Samkopf were building chemistry, creating something truly unique. 'Dex and Sam never cease to amaze me', he says. 'They’re versed and creative beyond measure, they both have an immense amount of musicality, and most of all, their love for music is sweaty.’

However adding to the legend, Exum took a little detour on his musical journey, spending years as a professional footballer in the NFL, for teams such as the San Francisco 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings. Now leaving that chapter of his life behind, Exum has returned to the true love held dear to him ever since he can remember: music.

Exum is not simply trying his hand at music though; he is crafting every part of his artistic journey, from carefully selected contributors (such as string composer Christian Balvig) and overseas producers, to shaping his own brilliant music videos with directors such as Allison Bunce and Rosabel Ferber. Both of whom occupy creative space in his art world, which goes by the name of ücke. He has effectively created his own musical ecosystem. 'You’ve got to create your own world and live highly in that first', he says. 'Making it inevitable for other worlds to not be touched by what’s vibrating through you. In my world I’m already a massively iconic artist.'

To be clear, Tig Notaro’s second album is titled LIVE [liv, verb]. LIVE [liv, verb] was recorded, uh, live [lÄ«v, adj. or adv.] at Largo on August 3rd, 2012 at her monthly show, “Tig Has Friends.” The day before this set, Tig was diagnosed with cancer in both breasts. This news was the bookend to an agonizing year in which Tig spent weeks in the hospital battling an intestinal bacteria infection. A week after being released from the hospital, her mother unexpectedly died. Then, in the middle of it all, her relationship fell apart. Which leads us here. Tig’s 30 minute set is not much more than an open-mic set in that it’s half scripted, raw and real. It’s an insightful detailing of her assessing a horrible set of circumstances in a calm, clever and clear manner. “Live at The Moth” was recorded on December 5th at The Avalon Hollywood. The story, recorded for the acclaimed storytelling podcast, is a companion piece of sorts to LIVE. In the 16 minute piece, Tig elaborates on the death of her mother and how the untimely passing eventually lead to a reconnection with her step father.

Following EPs unearthed from by Dukwa and Marco Bailey & Redhead, Tdsr land back in their native Scotland with the debut release from young Edinburgh producer LWS. One half of the party duo Agora, he has been quietly honing his production skills wherever he can, seemingly even during university lectures. This is most evident in the title track ‘Metrixulus’, made entirely from a ten-minute iPhone recording from one of his economics lecture, flipping it fully on its head. Distorted synth howls are layered atop tight, clinical ercussion shaking in unison with a broken melody. The overall effect reveals a method to the madness though, nodding to deeper dancefloor moments through the emotive synth work, yet also showing a keen ear for the blistering digital drums of UK Funky and post-dubstep offshoots. The four tracks here show a young producer with a distinct sound, yet each remain markedly different to another. ‘Buy These’ on the A2 changes up the pace with a sharp, bouncy rhythm workout bringing in toms reminiscent of old Dance Mania jams, alongside some quality ambient pads. Side B delivers a driving EBM style lead blended with elements of dub techno, cavernous reverb filling the stereo field (C-Gard). Big extended breakdown in the midsection too! Arguably the most full-on cut is left till last, utilising the same knack for tight drums to underpin a truly wonky electro melody with what sounds like a detuned panpipe scale amongst various other FX.

This unearthed Matthew Dear album was originally recorded after his acclaimed album Asa Breed (2007). Riyl: Beck, Bill Callahan/Smog, Bibio. Twenty-plus years into his career, producer/vocalist/songwriter/DJ Matthew Dear remains artistically unpredictable in pursuit of his prescient strain of electronically-formed, organically-delivered indie pop. His work traverses myriad musical worlds, belonging to none. But these fluid moves have not been without a few forks in the road, decisive turns, and what-ifs. Most notable is the pivot-point following Dear's acclaimed 2007 avant-pop LP, Asa Breed, in which he broke away from the 4/4 grid of his techno/house debut Leave Luck To Heaven and into something much more wild and idiosyncratic. Traveling between his adopted Detroit and his home state of Texas throughout 2008 and 2009, Dear amassed a set of personal, playful, looping guitar-centric recordings he'd consider for his next album. Given the new momentum of the hybrid electronic pop of Asa Breed which led to an opening slot for Hot Chip and remixes for `00 heroes like Spoon and Postal Service, Dear decided to shelf the material. He moved ahead to work on his watershed 2010 album, Black City, a steely noir set which earned him a Best New Music on Pitchfork and a worldwide tour with a besuited band. This "lost album" had a sound, a spirited country romp in the techno barn, and it had a rough title, a scribble on one of the CD-Rs passed to Ghostly label founder Sam Valenti IV, Preacher's Sigh & Potion. He never fully walked away from it, and merely kept moving down the road, waiting for the audience to catch up. Over a decade later, that time is now. Preacher's Sigh & Potion finds Dear unknowingly at an intersection in his young run, a burgeoning songwriter at his most freewheeling and unaffected. In hindsight, there were hints of Preacher's sound on Asa Breed, but the set still registers endearingly out of step with his eventual direction. This was the first time Dear tapped so directly into his late father's influence as a fingerpicking guitar player in the 1960s and `70s and a gateway to the music of John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, and Emmylou Harris. From the twang and tambourine stomp of album opener "Muscle Beach," to the metronome-like pulse of "Hikers Y" complete with an unmistakable Matthew Dear dryly dismissive mantra, to the gloomy carnival-leaving- town pomp of "Gutters and Beyond," Preacher's Sigh & Potion is filled with the reckless notions of an artist dashing the history of pop and rock, the twang of country, the build and release of techno. Dear is an auteur, and in retrospect, so many of his signatures crop up in these relics from his former self.

The regular album is black, the instrumentals are magenta. Mieke Miami's "Montecarlo Magic", the follow-up album to her debut "In the Forest", (2016, Sonar Kollektiv) no longer darkens through the forest, but there is truly no light constraint either. Rather a special, positive mood that radiates inward and outward, describing a state that seems to be inner contemplation and journey at the same time: Florida, California and Brandenburg nestle very close to each other here. Perhaps a river still rattles through the picture and certainly somewhere magicians*innen play with things hide: intoxicated, dreamy and certainly easy to find. Because in this world no one should look around for anything. Find what you want, says Mieke.

Right away the opener "Californio" makes me think of a stay in Los Angeles, an imagined Los Angeles, more imagined than real. Absurd: I was still invited there in February 2020. Silver Lake, in the first light of a new day. Walking along a spring morning, I hear from the garden of a hippie commune this chorus with bright bell piano, space echoes and fine refrain wafting over. "Californio ...". How close it gets to me? Very. I'd like to go back to where this music is playing and realize that this is happening just as much there, in that distant LA at a certain time, as it is in the here and now in me. Beautifully displaced simultaneity. The single "Horse", pre-released at the end of 2020, tells quite a lot about it: bass clarinet and the constant Angerauschte, loose, casual, played. An atmosphere of voices, instruments, delays and, if at all necessary, more painted than planned, the image of a (in itself) polyphonic world.

Unison different: bridges and choirs slipped from front to back, singing sometimes lead sometimes back. Generously overlapping themes, verses, choruses to song worlds. Which you can listen to like this or like that, says the artist. All get into each other, without effort and with horny opacity: Montecarlo Magic.

A confession: yes, I immediately thought, "'Californio' = Los Angeles, garden, world, music, and that hidden yet tangible new humility, hippie USA." I thought all that. But then Mieke tells me about ghost ships, souls and wanderings, and danger? No, it fits. Every dream is true, Yes and No, A and Not-A one: "So many out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible." '***

Soon this cover version of the Beatles will follow! Who does something like that? "Cry Baby Cry" Maybe the Fab Four in their Los Angeles days? Wiki says India. White album, Lennon on the peak. Supposedly he doesn't like the track later, here it fits. And Mieke Miami becomes, so to speak, for a very brief moment, the most humble John Lennon in the world, and then dreams on, and the band, which is actually herself, dreams itself alongside her.

A record like a garden: "The king was in the garden picking flowers for a friend who came to play." '**. So nice to hear something from John Lennon again and easy translated. Thanks Mieke.

And where I just thought myself listening to Los Angeles and India, doing something mysterious and simple, the record now leads me - via bumper cars and Abbey Road - via London to San Francisco: Swimming Pool. A street-of-Francisco feeling, with guitars and choirs - and soulful grooves that are as oppressive as they are pleasantly dirty. Nix urban soul though, but country road soul, which triggers a crazy wanderlust right now (and far beyond now). And at the same time dissolves it, because whoever listens is amazed - and understands: Brandenburg, Florida, California: It's all here. This melancholic wanderlust likes to blow away completely in the pollen of the places and regions of our desire. More than ever.

The last song: "Golden Ships" is then actually my favorite title, because then I can already start again with this magic music.

In the seventies, the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra in Łódź, despite over twenty years of experience, was rediscovering itself and sounding more modern and interesting with each successive year. Depending on the piece, forty to seventy people were taking part in it! The orchestra efficiently moved between funk and disco genres, touching on illustrative music or jazz. Despite the huge amount of recorded songs from this period, only a handful of them was published in 1975 on the album "String Beat". Moreover, the achievements of Henryk Debich and the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra from 1978 were recently released by the GAD Records label on the album "City". The rest of the recordings are still waiting to be discovered.

That is why Astigmatic Records will present not only an LP full of groove, pulsating drums, powerful brass sections and unconventional, previously unpublished compositions but also two seven-inch vinyl. Before the LP will be released, "Closeup", a limited seven-inch disc will be available to warm up, a format that is inseparably associated with this genre. The album will include two previously unreleased songs "Monika" and "Fun in the dark", which will open an important year for Henryk Debich.

While closing the project, it turned out that 2021 will be a year of many anniversaries. On January 18, the legendary conductor, founder of the Lodz Polish Radio and Television Orchestra celebrated his 100th birthday. In July it will be the 20th anniversary since his passing. To these round anniversaries, it should also be added that Radio Łódź - which has been for almost half a century the second home to H. Debich, celebrates its 80th anniversary, while 30 years ago the Orchestra, which he led until the very end, was dissolved.

Daptone Records is honored to announce the release of Innov Gnawa's forthcoming full length, Lila. Hailing from Morocco, but based in NYC, Innov Gnawa have been making waves locally and abroad with their hypnotic live shows - which is why producer, Bosco Mann invited the group to come record at the Legendary Daptone House of Soul. Gnawa is a music and spiritual tradition rooted in Morocco and dates back many centuries. Over the years, the liberated slaves of Northern and Western Africa integrated their musical rhythms and religious beliefs into the culture of Morocco creating a unique style of music and dance called Gnawa. It's not religious music, but rather music and rhythms that promote healing through trance and spirituality. The infectious rhythms of Gnawa songs are invocations for saints and spirits of freedom and liberation.

Gnawa groups consist of a Ma'Alem, or master, who plays the Guembri(or Sintir) - an ancient three stringed bass that later evolved into the modern day banjo, accompanied by a brotherhood of musicians playing the karkabas, which are metal castanets, representing the shackles and chains of slaves. The title of this album, Lila, literally means Night, and is a traditional Gnawa ceremony in which the Ma'Alem and his karkaba ensemble dedicate an evening of healing through music. A traditional Lila has many parts with a very extensive repertoire, and can last anywhere from a few hours to few days, and even weeks in some cases. The hypnotic poly-rhythms, along with incense and ceremonial ambiance induces states of trance in the musicians and guests. This all night rhythm fest is a spiritual ritual that cleanses the body, mind and spirit. It would be impossible to capture an entire Lila on on LP, but what Innov Gnawa delivers is a concise glimpse into this ancient Moroccan tradition. We invite you to immerse yourself into Lila.
