Originally scheduled to be the second Funkadelic 45, ‘Can’t Shake It Loose’ was cancelled before release. The song had been a single (and northern soul classic) by Pat Lewis, whilst the Supremes had recorded it for Motown. It’s fascinating to hear George and the boys’ treatment released on 45 for the first time. It is backed by one of the great breakbeats – Funkadelic’s actual second single ‘I’ll Bet You’. The opening break sounds amazing on this newly mastered 45.

The tenth and, at over 200 pages, largest issue of Carhartt WIP magazine to date is published with two different covers. While the first shows the New York musician CLIP, the second depicts an excerpt from the dossier 'Clockwatchers', which deals with the future of work in the context of the looming climate crisis. One of the two covers is selected at random when purchasing.

For Magazine Issue 10, Carhartt WIP spoke to Nourished By Time from Baltimore, Congolese sound and performance artist Cõvco, Brooklyn-based artist Diamond Stingily as well as skater Maria Navarro. In Cameroon, the Carhartt WIP editors observe how Jail Time Records is redefining how a label can function and in Taipei we meet Grillz artist Shiningmaker. Meanwhile, in Reading, Cieron Magat documents teenage boredom in England's inner cities. In addition, artist Anthony Coleman invited Carhartt WIP into his warped world populated by pop culture references, and with photographer Robert Leblanc, Carhartt WIP traveled to the most remote corners of the USA.

Meanwhile, the S/S24 collection is photographed by Catherine LoMedico, Den Niwa and Tolya Titaev. The Carhartt WIP Magazine Issue 10 ends with a conversation between author Geoffrey Mak and Hua Hsu, as well as an interview with Tokyo-based writer and theorist W. David Marx.

The guys at Puebco purchased big parachute fabric that's not being used for its original purpose anymore. It’s distinctively lightweight and strong. Although it’s hard to tell because they look similar, there are two types of fabrics combined: rip-stop fabric with threads woven in a lattice pattern to prevent tearing and a plain weave non-slip fabric. Handles made from dead stock or used industrial belts were used as inspiration to develop several of the Puebco items available. The materials were discovered in a town in India. Puebco visited a small specialty shop where fabrics were piled up close to the ceiling in an area where surplus military items were commonly distributed. There was no space where is filled with fabrics even for a footstep which led the Puebco guys to doubt whether it should be called a store or not. Led by a clerk in the shop, they climbed up on the huge mountains of fabric. The Puebco dudes kept moving forward, pushing fabrics aside that were not quite right until they found exactly what they had hoped for. Because they fought for hours as if exploring a cave, this material deserves Puebco's deep attachment which cannot be expressed in words. Originally released in 1988 ‘Hot Rock’ was the final single from Pennsylvanian based roots reggae band House Of Assembly. The band, comprising main songwriter Norman Bailey, Marc Campbell, Claver Campbell and Louis Putman, grew up in the Water House area of Kingston, Jamaica bonding over their shared love of Dub & Reggae. The 4 members moved to Pennsylvania in the US in the early 80’s and released one album ‘Confusion’ on the local Meadowlark label, touring throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and becoming stalwarts of the Pennsylvanian roots scene.

The band started their own Concrete label in 1988 releasing ‘Hot Rock’ complete with a Dub Version possessing a potent combination of punchy 707 drum programming, killer rolling bassline, stripped back lead guitar and a rising synth line. For the official reissue there’s an added ‘Rockapella’ version not found on the original 12” and a new full sleeve jacket designed by Bradley Pinkerton.
