Phoebe Rings is a dream-pop band offering a unique blend of introspective yearning with celestial danceable grooves. Their self-titled debut EP, a hopeful collection of musings, out on Carpark Records, is a testament to the distinctive musical style of Auckland jazz-school-trained pianist and songwriter Crystal Choi. Across six tracks, the EP is a love letter to some of the band’s influences: Studio Ghibli films, Zelda and Stardew soundtracks, Bossa Nova, Stereolab, and 90’s Korean ballads.

In 2020, the band played their first gig in a ‘funny side room’ during a festival at Auckland Town Hall. Choi’s songwriting was brought to life with Alex Freer on drums, Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent on guitar and synths, and Benjamin Locke on bass. Choi says she knew the tracks had to be recorded after the band played the songs better than she could ever imagine. And so, remotely through the Covid-19 lockdowns, the band started recording the EP.

Error Subcutáneo are Mauro Ferreiro (electronics) and Gonzalo Frómeta (drums). Born under the sweltering sun of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, their music portrays the colder, more urban side of life in the Caribbean, where cacophonous violence and Cold War monoliths collide with dreams of a better tomorrow. The duo take elements of hip-hop, modular electronics, island syncretism, and bebop to twist and distort contemporary narratives on music composition, representing the greater movement of Latin American resistance directly from its epicentre.

The tracks on Temporada Ciclónica fracture and scatter, synths detuned at will, the clatter of drums powering through the destabilised structures of the individual pieces. Gilles Peterson's well known love of the more avant-garde edges of jazz have made him an admirer of the duo and it's not hard to ascertain why. Their collaboration with fellow DR artist Rita Indiana on 'El Perseguidor' displays her authoritative voice as the dialogue between chaos and focus. Confusion, free jazz rage, discord and an overarching sense of threat colour this record.

Dark Entries Collected Music Graphics Compiled by Josh Cheon and Eloise Shir-Juen Leigh To celebrate 15 years of Dark Entries, this zine showcases the label’s visual aesthetic, bringing together some of the most iconic designs that we’ve released. While Dark Entries’ sonic mission has included sounds as diverse as synth-pop, Italo disco, darkwave, house, and techno, it is equally staggering to see the breadth of visuals the label has encountered and collected over the years. Included here are selected typography, logos, and illustrations from the label’s extensive catalog — well over 300 releases to date. Designs have been created using DIY analogue techniques as well as more contemporary digital approaches. A full discography is included at the end for reference and an essay by Shawn O’Sullivan (Led Er Est, Further Reductions). This zine serves as a source of inspiration for artists as well as a means of preserving and documenting these distinct graphics. Dark Entries Records is a San Francisco-based record label that was born in July 2009. Helmed by Josh Cheon, a vinyl-focused DJ and collector, the label has focused largely on excavating the 1980s underground era – but releases have spanned from sultry vintage disco to bleeding-edge contemporary techno. Graphic designer Eloise Shir-Juen Leigh has been responsible for most of the label’s artwork, whether reproducing original designs accurately for reissues or creating exciting new ones. Much care and attention is given to each release to represent the music in a memorable way as well as tell the stories behind these projects. Hand-stamped and limited to 200 numbered copies. 64 pages with neon cardstock covers. Measures 5×7 inches.

Feral Child’s 50th release is an absolute gem; housed in a beautiful 70s styled disco bag- it sees a 12” collaboration between longterm label favourites, Studio Kosmische from the UK and Cloud Canyons from Italy. A killer double A side featuring a reworking by SK of “Under Neon Stars” (from Cloud Canyons’ great 2023 debut album “Dreaming Of Horses Running In Circles”) which adds to the original versions’ relentless motorik pulse, by adding a few parts and alchemically blending the original elements of the song; the slowbuilding ethereal female vocals, the multilayers of monophonic analogue synths- moulding a shrouding and lilting veil on the 9 minute long original. Side B features a brand new track, “Black Fruit”, which also sprung from the creative dialogue between the two bands and also clocks in at around 9 minutes, side-long. Born as an instrumental piece by Studio Kosmische, “Black Fruit” developed into a full song thanks to the vocal additions by Michelle Cristofori, Laura Storchi and Stella Baraldi (Cloud Canyons’ singers) and a rich yet minimalistic array of instrumental parts by Studio Kosmische’s Dom Keen, who ingeniously shaped the keys harmonies and rhythmic textures around the vocal lines. Accomplished by some subtle electronic treatment by Cloud Canyons’ Nicola Caleffi, “Black Fruit” ideally complements “Under Neon Stars” as a two-sided creature, hanging somewhere between krautrock and electronica.

We live in places and they live in us. Sometimes we’re in the same place, linked together by the elements and our immediate surroundings. Other times, we push off into farther flung spaces, but stay connected as though telepathically, treasuring the closeness that once was and will someday be again. Most of the humble music that comprises ‘Canoga to Haʻikū’ was recorded in a single sitting by Carlos and Jesse in Carlos’ studio in California. A little later, Jesse departed for Maui, where an acquaintance named Russ kindly lent him a Casio Cz-1000 for the summer. With that instrument and the surrounding sounds of children, birds, insects, lizards, frogs, goats, wind and rain, the finishing touches were added to these songs. The ocean a glimmer in the distance through the palms, a portal was opened across the Pacific to Carlos’ studio, where friendship dances in all its forms. A rainbow beckoned and invited everyone to dive into the water and share in its universal embrace.

Leaving is the left-of-centre, electronics project of Rupert Thomas (Erasers), based in Perth, Western Australia. With a focus on hardware electronics, Thomas conjures immersive worlds of mood-driven synthesizer compositions that range from deep, slow moving ambience, to dense rhythms and hypnotic melodies. Forming over a decade ago as a home recording project on Whadjuk boodja (Perth, Western Australia), Thomas documented his early sound through a steady flow of CD-R’s and tapes before releasing his debut self-titled LP in 2020 via Good Company Records, a culmination of songs recorded between 2013-2017. In 2021 he contributed slow burner ‘Detached Lines’ to Deep Water Greenhouse ‘Greenhouse Vol. 1’ LP. In the live realm, Leaving has shared the stage with the likes of Actress, Oneohtrix Point Never and Outer Space (Emeralds), sculpting a mesmeric sonic experience through deep drones, atmospheric synth and echoed drum machine interplay. 2024 sees Leaving return with his second full length ‘Hidden View’ via Moon Glyph and Pouring Dream. Recorded and mixed at home throughout 2023 using a limited palette of synths, ‘Hidden View’ creates a sound world that is simultaneously moody, emotive and meditative, offering both careful focus and a dreamy escape for the mind. Through this collection of sounds, Thomas seeks to evoke the surrounding landscape in which it was made, with its wide-open spaces, dense bushland and expansive coastline.

With The Hidden Beauty Of Dutch House '94-'98, Anacalypto Records dug deep into the electronic archives of The Netherlands. Continuing their audio archaeology, their second release breathes new life into a true gem.

Closer is the first and last appearance of Luc Wächerlin aka Luca. Originally released in 1998, the four tracker was one of the final EPs to come out on Orlando Voorn’s ephemeral Slamdunk Records. The twenty-five-year-old press release describes the 12” as a collection of “beautiful, elongated, shimmering, Detroit style trancers for the morning after the night before.” Accurate words. The four works on offer are from the heyday of Techno, where flourishes of Detroit combine with the deeper currents of Sheffield for something energising and immersive. From the liquid synthwork and floating choral lines of the title piece, the listener is bathed in throbbing radiance and warmth. Echoes of “the night before” comes through in “Indian Summer.” A steady kick is the bedrock from which spirals of piano flow, fluid key changes providing a groove that roots this track firmly to the floor. Cascading chords introduce “Ultramarine”, subtle drum patterns giving way to acid scented bass and gentle currents of string. The quartet comes to a close with “Proxima.” Rich textured percussion supports drifting notes and silken chords, a touch of the otherworldly seeping through in tumbling 303 trills.

Closer is years beyond its time. Soulful compositions that belong to the burgeoning sound of Techno that was developing across the globe in the 1990s. Four works of beautiful machine music lovingly restored for a new audience.

This is not a "new"?Apache Dropout platter, but an archival sidestep into the Fugs n' fried view of their early beginnings. Before the Indiana trio cemented their unique red-level, distorto proto-punk they focused on a more obliterated bent on traditional forms. Fiddle, distortion and echo drive most of these songs, as sung by Sonny Blood, that tout distrust of banks, ballot uncertainties and magnetic heads. It's a bleaker vision than the recent Bubblegum Graveyard LP on Trouble in MInd, even with the blownout take on Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee" and hints of Holy Modal Rounders to Kim Fowley doused throughout these sides. Culled from the group's first two self-released cassettes - "Cha Cha" in 2008 and "Lysergic Choogle: Not for Pigs" issued a year later -- the 10 songs are equally formed by their recording in a grain silo and the group's Magnetic South studio as much as the songwriting. DISCO//OSLO... hat rein garnichts mit sich duellierenden Halbstarken zu tun und noch weniger mit norwegischen Alkoholmonopolen. DISCO//OSLO: Das steht für Punkrock. Das steht für Melodie. Das steht für vier Persönlichkeiten, mit dem gleichen Ventil. Punkrock hat eine lange Tradition in Oldenburg. Die "harte Schule" der norddeutschen Kleinstadt geht an Keinem spurlos vorbei. Zwischen aussterbendem "plattsnack" und gutsituierter Mittelschicht, sozialisiert laute Gitarrenmusik und bringt nach wie vor die "besseren Menschen" dieser Welt hervor. Ende 2009 trifft man sich das erste Mal, um einen Ausgleich vom Ausgleich zu schaffen, der in diesem Fall Namen wie BITUME, ALARMSIGNAL, SKAMBULÉ (rip), PARADOX etc. trägt. Nach zwei Besetzungswechseln, einer sehr positiv aufgenommenen Demo - 2012 das erste Album. DAS ALBUM... enthält 14 Songs, die durch verschiedene Aufenthalte der einzelnen Bandmitglieder (Jakarta, Portland, Madrid, Oldenburg etc.), ein Jahr der Aufnahme benötigte. Lyrisch stehen persönliche, politische sowie solzialkritische Themen in Wechselwirkung und so werden die Texte von treibendem, melodieprägnatem Punkrock getragen. Dieser Sound wird von Außenstehenden immer wieder mit Bands wie Turbostaat, Pascow oder auch Leatherface verglichen, jedoch im gleichen Satz auch immer auf die eigenständige, sowie authentische Art hingewiesen. Gemixt und gemastert wurde das Ganze in der Oldenburger Tonmeisterei von "Role" himself, der bereits Knöpfe bei Escapado, Just Went Black, Tackleberry, The Now-Denial etc. gedreht hat. Für das Aussehen ist "Ralf Rohde" verantwortlich, der bereits für Künstler wie CJ Ramone, Panteón Rococó, Nitrominds, Karamelo Santo etc. gearbeitet hat. Veröffentlicht wird das Album in Form einer 12inch Vinyl LP (inkl. Downloadcode) in Deutschland, England und Frankreich.
