One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! "Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe" is a righteous little project put together by Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee's round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that's even better than some of Lee's later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have an undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that's touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee's "Coltrane", which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan.

TAL delves deep into the very beginnings of Düsseldorf's post punk scene of the early 1980s. Stumm was the duo of Detlef Funder and Bernd Sevens who both would become pivotal figures in the tape underground movement of West-Germany, when they launched the SDV label in 1986. Individually they went on to produce boundary defying works as Konrad Kraft and Seventh Day respectively. The material on this album was recorded by Funder and Sevens quite casually in 1980 in a rehearsal studio in the centre of Düsseldorf. The recordings still have a uniquely dizzying quality and are somewhat of a basic blueprint for a lot of industrial/techno and post punk which was about to loom in all corners of the world.

For number 83 in the Brazil 45 series, we pulled out a real treat. It features two tracks from Roberto De Melo Santos. Born in 1949 in Recife (Brazil), and despite a small discography, he is considered among the true icons of Brazilian soul music under his artist alias, Di Melo.

His self-titled debut album from 1975 has long been collectible for its irresistible Brazilian-funk sound, pleasing the Brazilian, B-Boy breaks, funk collectors, and sample hunters alike. With original copies for the album now fetching crazy sums, we felt these tracks needed another moment in the sun for all to enjoy.

For this release we selected two of our favourite cuts from this cult album, ‘Kilariô' and ‘Pernalonga'. Coincidentally these two gems were released on Odeon Records in 1975 as a rare promo campacto (a Brazilian 7", which plays at 33rpm). 'Kilariô' is a pure Brazilian-soul classic. All the right elements gel together, whilst Di Melo works his relaxed vocal magic over the top. ‘Pernalonga', with its catchy guitar and horns intro, loose break-beat drum, has the feel-good factor which some may recognize as one of the samples behind N.A.S.A featuring David Byrne, & Chali 2na's 'The People Tree' from 2009.

Di Melo is still recording to this day, releasing an album with Cotonete on Favorite Recordings in 2019 - a true don.

Ilpo Väisänen (Pan Sonic) and Dirk Dresselhaus (Schneider TM) retitle themselves die Angel for Entropien 1; their eighth LP of electro-acoustic music together, and the duo’s debut for Shapednoise’s Cosmo Rhythmic label. Accompanied by skilled improvisor Oren Ambarchi on two tracks, die Angel model a complex physicality through raw, elemental inputs, exploring a flux of reactive feedback processes and mutating, unstructured sonic states generated from crackling fusions of electronics, drums, electric guitar and field recordings warped and riddled with FX. Taking its title from both the Finnish word and German plural for entropy - in physics, the measure of thermodynamic disorder within a system - Entropien 1 renders seven examples of their kinetic systems in elusive action, keening from arrhythmic mulch to sloshing brownian motions and a brilliantly towering 15 minute exploration that tips into billowing, white hot feedback with scintillating effect. The amorphous results document and describe a freeness of energy travelling from body to machine and diffused across alternating acoustic environments. Each player works as controlled, external variables which act upon and interact with the different acoustic conditions to tempestuous impact, convulsing between squashed, recursive diffractions in Roha, to the sublimated roil of jazz drums and electric guitar wail in Terminen Kevät, before harnessing sloshing feedback chaos in the combustible, diaphanous two parts of Entropia - both North and South - which bring the LP to its logical, compelling conclusion.With the addition of Wold or KTL-like metal emulsification and lacquer-bubbling grain in Kitka, and Ambarchi’s plasmic overdubbing in the burning plasmic plong of Silvaticum, the overall impression is like auditive DMT, dissolving the senses and the ego - simultaneously theirs and the listeners - to better snag us in the music’s metastable potential and aid our unanchored exploration in those dimensions. Entropien 1 is dedicated to Mika Vainio.

Zum 10-jährigen Jubiläum erstmals auf Vinyl Irgendwann vielleicht 2010 sind sich Moritz Krämer und Francesco Wilking zum ersten Mal in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg über den Weg gelaufen, nachdem sie einen (weiten) Steinwurf voneinander aufgewachsen waren und ein paar Jahre in Freiburg nebeneinander hergelebt hatten. Wahrscheinlich machte es sowas wie Zoom, Klick oder Klonk, denn es genügte ein sanfter Schubs von ihren Konzertagenturen und die beiden standen gemeinsam auf der Bühne, begleiteten sich gegenseitig und sangen zweistimmig. Das war 2011 im Societaetstheater Dresden und Francesco und Moritz fassten auf der Rückfahrt von dort schon viele zukünftige Auftritte und eine dystopische Rockoper ins Auge. Die Konzerte wollten sie mit Freund*innen spielen, das erste mit Gisbert zu Knyphausen in Halle, das zweite mit Judith Holofernes in Berlin. Danach ließen sie die Gastsänger*innen weg, spielten aber weitere Shows mit den anderen Livemusikern der ersten Shows: Max Schröder am Schlagzeug, der damals noch mit einem Bein bei Tomte war und Felix Weigt am Bass, der für Spaceman Spiff alle Instrumente spielte und bei den tollen Kid Kopphausen mitmachte. Wir wissen nicht mehr wann die Frage fiel: "Sind wir jetzt eine Band?", aber es muss irgendwann im Prozess der Aufnahmen zur EP "Unzufrieden" gewesen sein. Dort hört man zwar noch den Feature-Ansatz - Gisbert und Judith singen auf "Vergangenheit" - aber vor allem hört man zum ersten Mal den Sound der Höchsten Eisenbahn: Ein-Finger-Casio, Chorus Gitarren, Pluckerbass, Rasseln und Handtuch auf der Snare. Dazu Geschichten von Losern namens Jan und anderen Leuten die zwischen jung und alt und Nacht und Tag ihre Anschlusszüge verpassten. Es ist 10 Jahre her, aber ein paar Sachen vergisst man nicht. Wie, dass sie eine ganze Nacht Chöre aufgenommen haben für "Die Uhren am Hauptbahnhof", nur um sie morgens aus Versehen zu löschen. Oder dass Felix einige signature Keyboard-Lines im Liegen eingespielt hat. Das Schreiben der Songs und Aufnehmen ging ziemlich schnell, wie das Coverfoto mit dem Handy im Hof vom Proberaum. Die vier wussten, dass sie auf jeden Fall mehr Platten machen und Konzerte spielen wollten. Es folgten drei bunte Alben mit großen kleinen Songs und award winning live-Shows, aber so leicht ging ihnen nie wieder etwas von der Hand wie diese erste EP.

What on earth has happened to gothic rock? This was the thought burning in Joakim Knutsson’s mind, and he felt that something needed to be done to save the much-loved genre from going down the drain. He embarked on this mission with the aim to create something special but also something faithful to the original ideals of the 80’s gothic genre.

“I wanted a band that would be an occult mix of The Lords Of The New Church, Adam and the Ants, John Carpenter and Billy Idol”, says Knutsson, “The end result turned out heavier, bloodier and darker than that, but that was probably our destiny anyway.”

With a little help from prominent members of the Swedish metal and punk community the idea recently took a solid form. Today the band together sums more than 250 years of knowledge in music and pop culture - knowledge they shamelessly put to use in their own creation.

Here they are: die Oberherren. The Gothic rock band the world has been waiting for since the golden age of the 80s. Kept strictly under wraps until now, die Oberherren feature members of the rock and metal royalty in Sweden, with past or current membership in bands such as The Coffinshakers, Ghost, The Mobile Mob Freakshow, Gehennah and many more.

The band snatched their ominous-sounding moniker from the intellectual group that operated at the turn of the 20th century, by whom their lyrics are also heavily influenced. “Anarchistic, occult, and apocalyptic imagery with prophets of war, Armageddon, decadence, and love – these themes and ideas are even more actual today than the original ‘overlords’ could ever dream of over a hundred years ago”, comments Knutsson.

The debut album Die By My Hand, set for release on January 27th 2023 on Svart Records, is a collection of eight songs that are adorned with infectious hooks and laced with vintage darkness.

With obvious intent Nui and Simon set out to create an album that encompasses all of their influences and experiences as musicians and journeymen in the world of African inspired rhythm and sound and have arrived at a work that is at once global, innovative and deeply funky. It’s been an incredible journey that has taken them from the wilds of the northern hinterlands of New South Wales in Australia to the dreamy secret gardens of Marrakesh, from the onsite recordings of Afro-Cuban choirs of Havana, to the Gnawa street sounds of Moroccan medinas. Nui and Simon have traversed the globe to create these recordings and have collected diverse and international group of artists to collaborate with in the making of Heart of Drums. Artists such as Cazeaux Oslo, who is an African-American Mc and vocalist hailing from California. Olugbade Okunade , Nigerian trumpeter and vocalist , was formerly a member of the Femi Kuti Positive Force band. Members of Clave y Guaguanco, One of Cuba’s foremost folkloric groups, who have been around since the 60’s. Lalita Yagnik, Portuguese Speaking Indian, vocalist and martial artist. Radouan Naim, Traditional Moroccan vocalist and instrumentalist. And Close Counters, Australian Up and coming Electronic duo. Digital Afrika is made up of two main protagonists: Zhonu ‘Nui” Moon (Future Roots) An African-Australian producer, percussionist and Dj that has performed and recorded all over the world. With a strong focus on African music,He has worked with the likes of Femi Kuti , Mulatu Astake and Tony Allen. And Simon Durrington (Si Fixion ) who is an Australian based producer, keys player and DJ. With extensive experience of working with Melanesian , Indian and world musicians. Drawing on these influences, Si weaves these styles together seamlessly with his unique high quality electronic production. This album ‘Heart of Drums’ is a synergy of lush analog electronica and fiery African percussion, vocals and instrumentation. With occasional reinvented throwbacks to the Disco and Funk era as well as forward thinking Afro-futuristic Record bag essentials, Heart of Drums really brings the party! These are constructed dance floor motivators for any environment. The artwork for this record deserves special mention as the mask was handcrafted by the interesting and talented artist Ju Mu Monster. Based in Berlin, the studied fashion designer creates colourful, wildly dancing image-worlds, in which beings from diverse cultures are combined with shamanism and spiritual worlds. Dub scientist Tapes is up first with a killer, faded rework, shifting ‘Natfo’ into a 4/4 blur, slowly building into the fuzz with hazy pads before ending on a nostalgic synth-fwd crescendo. It’s miles away from his 8-bit digi dub, instead drawing on a kind of floor-focused, lushly faded Hype Williams vibe, for our money one of his best. Krikor welds his own sound set to the same track, deploying a rolling kick-heavy rhythm before subtly adding SD’s distinctive vocals and Dijit’s signature percussive clanks smacking snares somewhere between Low Jack & Shackleton.

Dilated Peoples is the Los Angeles hip hop trio that achieved great success in the underground hip hop community during the Nineties and Zeroes. Dina Ögon is like a bumblebee - big and fluffy, and it should be impossible for it to fly, but it does it anyway - quite simply as well. Anna Ahnlund, Christopher Cantillo, Daniel Ögren and Love Örsan have had forty fingers involved in an unnumerable amount of Swedish rock, jazz, soul and pop projects, recordings and tours and all kinds of hush hush. Between themselves they've played in different constellations and played back up for each other, assisted even more in one form or another for more than a decade. But now they've formed a more remarkable quartet than what transpired from any of all the shenanigans they've previously been involved with. When such seasoned musicians themselves get a shot at it, it's not supposed to be able to fly or cause sensation according to conventional ways of marketing scheming, but this_ well for one thing it's so self-evidently great, secondly the new album Oas sounds exactly like the sum of what's lacking in Sweden musically in the 2020ies. And for too many decades before that as well, one could add, at least in this natural form. Oas is bubbling in a way few albums do, but without bursting. It's held together by their curiosity, they're searching through so many musical corners without going astray, and the skillful playing welds it together. Dina Ögon are checking all the nutrients from black music and pop, but it's no pretentious show off, only a hella rewarding listen.
