As 'Portrait With Firewood' is Felix’s most personal body of work to date, the product of an emotionally turbulent 2017, capturing the range of feelings and emotions he went through in vivid sonic beauty. By putting aside his previous sampladelic approach he returned to his childhood instrument of the piano as a core starting point.
Felix is classically trained in the jazz tradition and influenced by the likes of Keith Jarrett and Alice Coltrane. Previously he was shy at the prospect of fans hearing his piano playing, but determined to overcome this fear he has brought forward a new honesty to his work.
Felix collaborated with cellist Zosia Jagodzinska and vocalist Lola Empire. Jagodzinska recorded several takes of improvisations over the track 'Creature' which Felix would chop, pitch and layer into new melodic lines and seed throughout the album.

Felix's new approach expanded to experimentation with field recording, contact micing his beloved piano and purchasing his first hardware synth, all in service of enriching the personal, humane quality of the record.

Gabriele Poso returns to the
label with his new LP ‘Awakening’. Since his
debut album ‘From The Genuine World’,
released in 2008 on Osunlade’s Yoruba
Records, Gabriele has amassed an impressive
catalogue of solo work and guest appearances,
not to mention a hectic schedule of live
performances. Perhaps Gabriele’s most rounded
work to date; ‘Awakening’ captures an artist in
full bloom, examining a crossroads between
creative and personal paths.
“The birth of my eldest son Viktor caused me to
question my career in music and explore other,
more ‘secure’ options, but thanks to my wife I
quickly realised that to be different from your
neighbor doesn’t make you wrong. After all, in
this life, does anyone really have any security?
So actually Viktor and my family have become
my super power: they teach me to believe in
myself more then I ever did before. This album
is all about that realization; that Awakening.”
Encompassing Afro-latin, jazz, soul and dance
music elements, glued together by Poso’s
distinctive layered live percussion sounds,
‘Awakening’ is peppered with guest
performances and production touches from a
talented series of friends. As Gabriele puts it “I
like to surround my music with the people I love
and want to spend my time with.” A deeply
rooted and spiritual project, a few of the tracks
featured on ‘Awakening’ will be familiar to those
lucky enough to catch Gabriele Poso on tour
over the last 12 months; not least his reimagining
of the Roy Ayers classic ‘Everybody
Loves The Sunshine’. From the stunning cover
art by Elvira Gerardi which features Gabriele’s
first born son Viktor, to the special music
contained within, this album’s message is clear;
although as Gabriele succinctly points out: when

No one had been through those doors in years. Unchanged, seemingly untouched, just a Guard watching over it, one wondered whether the place would ever see the light of day again. Built in the 70s by Scotch, there were only twenty such places in the entire world. Twenty studios, all identical. Most had undergone a digital makeover in the 80s, but not this one; situated in Lomé, this studio had stayed true to its original form. Silent and uninhabited but waiting for one thing, and one thing only: for the sacred fire to be lit once again. That of the Togolese Recording Office, is studio OTODI for those in the know. Through thick layers of dust, the console was vibrating still, impatient to be turned on and spurt out the sound so unique to analog. That sound is what Peter Solo and his band Vaudou Game came to seek out.
The original vibrations of Lomé’s sound, resonating within the studio space, an undercurrent pulsing within the walls, the floor, and the entire atmosphere. A presence at once electrical and mystical sourced through the amps that had never really gone cold, despite the deep sleep that they had been forced into. In taking over the studio’s 3000 square feet, enough to house a full orchestra, Vaudou Game had the space necessary to conjure the spirits of voodoo, those very spirits who watch over men and nature, and with whom Peter converses every day.
For the most authentic of frequencies to fully imbibe this third album, Peter Solo entrusted the rhythmic section to a Togolese bass and drum duo, putting the groove in the expert hands of those versed in feeling and a type of musicianship that you can’t learn in any school. This was also a way to put OTODI on the path of a more heavily hued funk sound, the backbone of which maintains flexibility and agility when moving over to highlife, straightens out when enhanced with frequent guest Roger Damawuzan’s James Brown type screams, and softens when making the way for strings. Snaking and undulating when a chorus of Togolese women takes over, guiding it towards a slow, hypnotic trance. Up until now, Vaudou Game had maintained their connection to Togo from their base in France. This time, recording the entire album in Lomé at OTODI with local musicians, Peter Solo drew the voodoo fluid directly from the source, once again using only Togolese scales to make his guitar sing, his strings acting as channels between listeners and deities…

Post-Nuclear Mind Music? Lizard Strategies? Void Spirit...? These bizarre titles are just a few of the self-coined terms that Australian electronic musician Ian MacFarlane has conjured to represent his eccentric sonic world. An artist whose unique style of electronic experimentalism has balanced dangerously close to the edge of popular convention, existing outside the mainstream and extending well beyond the fringe of any sanctioned independent scene. A futurist outsider whose extraordinary musical vision has explored the uncharted realms of consciousness and fantasy. Following a brief stint with the legendary Australian Krautrockers Cybotron, MacFarlane produced three independent solo albums throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. His debut LP Void Spirit, an experimental album issued under the pen name ‘Violet Lightning’, was followed by a further two albums published under his own name, the cosmic influenced Back From Beyond and finally the privately issued electro-ambient suite Planetarium. Presented with hours of unreleased home recordings, The Roundtable has begun a dedicated search through the fascinating archives of this under exposed artist. Beginning with a vinyl release of the rare cassette-only album Planetarium; this private press sees MacFarlane armed with a bank of Roland synthesizers, drum machines and field recordings, spawning a mutant amalgam of German Kosmische Musik, French Library Electro and Private Issue New Age. An impediment to achieving a place in the post-punk pantheon — Daszu was based in Milwaukee, not in the UK. Except for cassette distributions in Helsinki and Dublin, and a few scattered performances, they lived, practiced and performed near home. In 1979, Mark Rudolph (now an interactive 3D artist, musician, software developer, mathematician and the director of i3Dmedia LLC) talked in his kitchen to David Wolf about an idea he had for a new music: how music could be 'popular' without rock guitars and a big wall sound such as large amps and organs. "I said we could do a minimal three-piece music based on new melodic lines and poetry and synthesis. I thought that we could remake reality. It was possibly ambitious, but I didn't think so. We decided to do it." They did it. Not with a big polyphonic keyboard, but with a mini-moog sound generator.

The 1/2 Dativa material included on our Lion survey of Daszu's musical innovations was the work of Rudolph and his Australian friend and musician, Greg O'Connor (Boom Crash Opera). Rudolph had been studying mathematics and computer music in Australia, and a mix of Daszu, his computer generated music and O'Connor's great genius with electronic parts is evident in these intense, propulsive recordings made on a pair of DX-7 synthesizers one feverish day in 1983.

UK DJ and producer Rohan Walder, a.k.a. Randomer furthers his exploration into deep, spatial techno on Dekmantel’s UFO imprint. Fusing together two-step rhythms, cavernous beats, distortion, layered kicks, and an attentive detail to sound design, Randomer delivers an uncompromising array of abstract and destructive techno tracks.
Randomer’s approach to techno has always mantained a bassier, obtuse approach to sound, with polyrhythm beats that have helped set his sonic identity apart from his peers. Having released the Running Dry EP on DKMNTL UFO in 2016, Randomer is firmly establishing himself as one of the label’s favourite artists, with a resounding appearance at the Dekmantel festival in São Paulo, and a prime slot awaiting for him in the UFO tent at this year’s festival in Amsterdam.
The latest EP by the UK producer kicks off with 'Van Pelt', which skips on the off-beat at just over 130bmp, and textured with kicks that sound like two robust, metal dumpsters being hit together. Littered in the background are gongs, random percussive sounds, and something very alien, making it the perfect track for the UFO tent. 'Shadow Harp' is quintessential techno, with yet more thudding, dark-kicks layered against a syncopated plucked and jarring bass. 'Dissolve' drip and oozes with a sunken undercurrent of dystopic-melancholy, driving in ruptured reverb with a tribal percussive foundation. Final track 'Slicing’ dares to take things a little further, as the rounded-hollow kicks punctuate against more metallic, and analogue sounds - like a war of machines, set to a rhythm of abstract, free-flowing gust of techno cuts. Throughout the four-tracks, Randomer showcases his innate ability to excite and surprise with dynamism, and cutting sounds, with a technique that has been well-honed throughout the years. As he stated in an interview with Resident Advisor in 2016; “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”
Having launched in 2016, DKMNTL UFO has released critical cuts from Peter Van Hoesen, Anthony Parasole, and Voiski.

from The Shacks instant classic debut album Haze.
The A side “My Name Is…” is one of the first songs The Shacks wrote shortly after they met.
Producer Leon Michels had the track and the title for it and sent it on to The Shacks to pen the
lyrics. Max Shrager says of writing the lyrics “this song is about setting a time and place to meet
up, wandering around like ghosts until we spotted each other in a crowd of strangers. It is
inspired by "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos”. Musically, it has the infectious
attraction that all of El Michels productions do. A poppy melody balanced out by the rough and
tough rhythm section made this the perfect match for Shannon’s subtle and sweet vocals.
The B side, “Sand Song” is a beautiful tune about an ugly subject; global warming. The
hauntingly beautiful guitar melody that the Shrager produced track begins with is met with the
equally somber vocals from Shannon. Reverb drenched background vocals and organ
flourishes follow suit with the arrangement showcasing The Shacks razor sharp musicianship.
A stand out tune from the album and the embodiment of what made iD magazine call The
Shacks “classic American sounds…simultaneously recalling Sesame Street and David Lynch’s
nocturnal crooners”.

Repress alert! In the four years since legendary Italian producer alexander Robotnik dropped his Undicidisco ep on hell yeah, it has become a cult classic.

The big room Italo beats have become modern staples and regular fixtures in sets by the likes of Gerd Janson, Peggy Gou, Prins Thomas, Dixon and many others around the globe. Because of this, original 12" versions are highly sought after but rather than paying inflated prices, you can now get your hands on this re-issue.

The original track here dates back to a coast to coast 12” in 2013. It became a big regular tune for the Balearic Gabba Sound System crew back then before the wider scene picked it up and made it into favourite it is now.

These are lurid songs, urgently told through Gareth Liddiard's barbed and byzantine lyricism, abrasive guitar slashes, drum adrenalin, raunchy bass and electronic undercurrents. They're raging,
rapscallion, and funny, lyrically delving into everything from internet shaming to the kuru "laughing death" disease of the PNG highlands to Russian chess great Gary Kasparov's portentous loss to an IBM computer. Live, Tropical Fuck Storm are a force of nature, conjuring chaos at every blistering performance, with zero shits to give for corp orate music hegemony. "Kneel down by the advertising, don't you
make a single false move" calls out the female chorus of Fiona Kitschin and Erica Dunn echoing the dismay of our time as we bear witness to the sinister seductions which social media surveillance has entangled us. A Laughing Death in Meatspace doesn't show us the way out of this situation, but it howls along with us as we peer into the maelstrom ahead.

'Los Lagos’ is Thomas Fehlmann's seventh solo full-length, his 4th for Kompakt following his Berlin inspired 2010 full length 'Gute Luft'. in the musician's own words it’s about "checking the juice". Establishing a picture of his current artistic condition, as suggested by the title - los lagos / die lage / the situation (literally translating to 'the lakes' but taking the meaning of 'wassup' in the context of a relaxed discussion between friends), the album refers to Fehlmann's "musical motivation, dreams and wishes" through the language of music exclusively: a way to "allow myself to techno" he says, "to techno as a means to deconstruct and rebuild again. Set up an area of tension, loose it in the flow of the grooves. Magnifying some detail out of proportion, regroup around that and slowly knit a texture. Expand."
