Heavy-progressive, proto-metal and psychedelic hard-rock from the depths of the UK underground, 1970-71. Formed in Preston by the core of Pete Hughes (lead guitar) and Mick Carroll (vocals, rhythm guitar), Stoned Rose evolved from a band called Five Steps Beyond and at one time featured Chris Allen on bass (later of Ultravox). The band worked with a London agency called Nemesis and also with Tramps from Birmingham (owned by Black Sabbath guitarist Toni Iommi). The production, like the music itself, is loud, heavy, and beautifully simple. “This record is a direct result of my wife telling me she was pregnant with our son. As a first time father, panic set in and I wrote the album in two hours. I wasn’t sure if I’d have a lot of time once he was born so I crammed as many frantic riffs into one album as possible. One of the best kept secrets of the Italian Hardcore scene. Manimal took shape in the mid-1980s, in the tumultuous era of the roman underground uprising. They’ve been actually one of the first hardcore band – with label mates High Circle - rising from the ashes of the capital city punk scene. In 1985 they’ve been part of the historical German pack altogether with Negazione and Indigesti, a tour that made literally history ! In 1986 they recorded their sole self titled album. The record saw the light on the legendary Contagio Records and was a furious example of the contemporary attack to the system. Eleven tracks in total with three of them previously appeared on "Subject To Blackout," a cultish American tape compilation (with early Offspring, Excel and Attitude Adjustment). No compromise classic Italian Hardcore with fast guitar riffs, elaborate bass lines and hard-hitting drums. A necessary rediscovery that further delineates the greatness of the Italian scene in the early eighties.

"What's Going On is not only Marvin Gaye's masterpiece, it's the most important and passionate record to come out of soul music, delivered by one of its finest voices, a man finally free to speak his mind and so move from R&B sex symbol to true recording artist. With What's Going On, Gaye meditated on what had happened to the American dream of the past -- as it related to urban decay, environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality, unemployment, and poverty. These feelings had been bubbling up between 1967 and 1970, during which he felt increasingly caged by Motown's behind-the-times hit machine and restrained from expressing himself seriously through his music. Finally, late in 1970, Gaye decided to record a song that the Four Tops' Obie Benson had brought him, 'What's Going On.' When Berry Gordy decided not to issue the single, deeming it uncommercial, Gaye refused to record any more material until he relented. Confirmed by its tremendous commercial success in January 1971, he recorded the rest of the album over ten days in March, and Motown released it in late May. Besides cementing Marvin Gaye as one of the most important artists in pop music, What's Going On was far and away the best full-length to issue from the singles-dominated Motown factory, and arguably the best soul album of all time."
