Mid October welcomes the return of Amsterdam’s Easttown to Cécille with a fresh five- tracker entitled the ‘Timeless’ EP. Dutch producer and DJ Easttown has been rapidly gaining recognition in the house music scene with his signature blend of sample-rich, disco-infused house. His tracks have been featured on renowned labels like Franky Rizardo’s LTF Records, Folamour’s House Of Love, and most notably Cécille, where he made a splash in April this year with his “Chaos” EP. While the delivery and dark-to-light balance might echo shades of what Adrian Borland patented decades ago, Corker add their own color (more than just grey, mind you) in a convincing manner across the album. Lead cuts, "Distant Dawn" and "Vital Fall" showcase the range and dexterity that Ohio seems to inherently cultivate, but tracks like "Forever Silent" (featuring Angie Willcutt from Artificial Go and Rod) and the finale, "No Necessities", are like a death trip from the cosmos down to the factory floor. It's a focused frenzy towards the finish line, a rush of calculated execution, a mad dash run with style.

The music here marks a fundamental chapter in the evolution of Jesús "Chucho" Valdés' career and development into one of the finest jazz pianists in the world. The concepts that he brought to fruition in the Quinteto Cubano de Jazz, the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, and Irakere, have their roots in the band Chucho formed at the beginning of the 1960's, which due to limited distribution has received little attention from specialists and jazz lovers alike. Chucho's album Jazz Nocturno was recorded in the early 1960's. During the years in which he worked for the Havana Musical Theater Orchestra, he formed his own combo with friend Carlos Emilio Morales on guitar, Paquito D'Rivera on sax and clarinet, Enrique "Kike" Hernández on bass, Emilio del Monte on timbales, Julio Vento on flute, Alberto Valdés on trombone, and Oscar Valdés on congas. Fables of the future fuel the present. Lisel (Eliza Bagg) draws from this tradition on The Vanishing Point, a daring musical odyssey of altered singing, experimental pop, broken melodies, and striking electronics. A culmination of her continual dissemblance of genre, Lisel’s new album is an epic composed of allegorical tales, forming a dystopian storybook of life in the shadow of impending catastrophe. It’s a high-concept work of contemporary pop sounds, hyperpop motifs and tropes. Every song reflects the shared psycho-emotional experience of moving towards unsettling futures and looking beyond these outcomes, to the point where the horizons vanish.

Evolving the sonic toolkit she employed on Patterns For Auto-tuned Voices And Delay (2023), Lisel transforms pop into a canvas for operatic storytelling. Along with making her own work, Bagg is a classical singer working in baroque and contemporary experimental opera, and with her project Lisel, she seeks to develop new, expressive qualities out of ancient vocal techniques from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. Her opera experience has infused her with a desire for a big, cinematic sound and holistic world-building, creating a “total artwork,” and she fits that medium into the form of a solo project. From haunting whispers to soaring melodies, she reaches back towards ancient musical traditions while incorporating futuristic sounds in order to imagine how a possible future might look back at contemporary existence.

Dystopic stories melt into pop songs, hammered to ruin. Both through sonics and lyrics, the album recounts urgent narratives as ancient mythological fables, chronicling in operatic density the deepening awareness of the world’s looming, inevitable vanishing point.

Photographer Carla Rossi further builds Lisel’s world through a series of photographs that similarly draw on Renaissance and Medieval painting, while placing them aesthetically in a digital realm. In these dramatic, hyper-stylized photos, Lisel takes up classical poses and yields iconographic symbols, further exploring the dissonance in her work as these manufactured “paintings” recall storytelling of the past while depicting images from an imagined future.

Debut standalone VHF album by the Elkhorn duo of Drew Gardner and Jesse Sheppard, a tight set of six studio recordings in a variety of moods and featuring a lot of new sound textures. Elkhorn’s prolific stream of releases since 2016 has highlighted their mastery of sprawling long-form, acoustic-driven hypno-jams, with an emphasis on live performance (including on their collaboration with Pelt’s Mike Gangloff on the Shackamaxon Concert album). The Red Valley is a more layered and composed-sounding set, with the duo overdubbing extensively on top of their own dual guitars. Leading off the LP, “Crystal Hummingbird” features one of their signature minor-modal vamps, with layers of fuzz bass, zither, and frame drum providing weight and psychedelic density. “Gray Salt Trail” continues the vibe, with thick fuzz vibraphone supplementing the cinematic palate, leading into the spare side-closer “Black Wind Of Kayenta,” where Sheppard plays electric 12-string and Gardner solos on acoustic guitar.

Side two starts with “Road to Chaco Canyon,” a brooding duet that builds momentum with Gardner’s insistent frame drum cadence, dropping down into the quiet string pool of “Inside Spider Rock” (featuring Fern Knight’s Jesse Sparhawk on gloriously swirling lever harp) and the graceful finale “Jackrabbit Hops.”

"It’s been a long time since I last recorded an album - a break of some 40 years! Passing Clouds now builds on my earlier retrospective work on “Light Patterns” and “Sticklebacks” released in the past few years by the wonderful Smiling C label. I still have a daily obsession of writing tunes and experimenting with sound and was recently inspired to record again. On Passing Clouds, I have tried to capture my love of sky watching and of being in peaceful places. I set about my sessions, as always, alone with my electric/acoustic guitars and bass, playing through simple analog equipment such as valve reverb, tremolo and tape delay. I use a violin bow to get the drone and ambient sounds into a tape looper. Whilst working on the album, I tried hard to get the feel of my favourite ECM artists such as Collin Walcott, Ralph Towner, John Abercrombie and Eberhard Weber - my heroes! Sinatra is regarded as one of the most popular entertainers of the mid-20th century. He is among the world's best-selling music artists, with an estimated 150 million record sales globally. Over the course of his career Sinatra received eleven Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Trustees Award, Grammy Legend Award, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was included in Time magazine's compilation of the 20th century's 100 most influential people. American music critic Robert Christgau called him "the greatest singer of the 20th century" and he continues to be regarded as an iconic figure.

Like Metallica or the Ramones, S.H.I.T. writes the kind of riffs that beg you to pick up a guitar and strum along, but only the most dedicated practitioners will approach the energy of those relentless downstrokes that have lit up so many 21st-century pits. While the riffs are the centerpiece, For a Better World is brocaded with details that add texture, depth, and dynamics, like the bursts of power electronics chaos that occasionally bubble to the surface or the triumphant guitar lead in 'Terminal Democracy.' Ryan Tong’s vocals also sound better than ever here, minimizing the delay and distortion effects that swaddled him on previous records in favor of letting his natural venom ring out. Case in point, the UK82-infused 'Kill the Fuckers' and its Chaos UK-esque chorus: 'Kill the fuckers! Just kill them all!' If the album’s title seems curiously positive, its context as the last line of that song makes perfect sense.
