Reveries is Zach Frizzell, Marc Ertel and Damien Duque’s first album for over three years, and follows the success of their debut Liberamente. Together, the trio craft delicately textured and slowly unfurling sonic vistas, occupying a unique aural domain that lies between guitar-driven drone music and modern classical compositions.With their individual projects they are incredibly prolific, but Dawn Chorus releases are few and far between and Reveries represents a refined evolution, leaning more heavily toward string-based arrangements and compositional virtuosity. It is the very essence of what they are calling “dronegaze”, pushing the boundaries of the ambient genre while embracing a profound auditory expression. According to the trio, the six, long tracks on Reveries are “heavily reliant on improvisation, intuition, and allowing the compositions to exist in their own moment; the aim was a feeling of fluidity and a sense that every instrument has its place and purpose”. And they’re right. The opening title track emerges quietly in a swirl of strings; lead single ‘Deus’ eases its fittingly reverent grain into a glorious minor-key immensity; ‘Cadere’ pulls together a cast of orchestral instruments into a comforting devotional; ‘Somnium’ plays out in diffuse, shimmering melodic rounds; ‘Vale’ blossoms from a pair of sparse, alternating chord swells; and ‘Aufero’ is the perfect coda that reprises the low-end rumble of the album’s overture before being swept away on a sea of dissonance. “We live in an era of infinite distraction,” says Zach Frizzell, “where often the most valuable thing you can find is a respite for the soul.” How right he is. This, truly, is music from a higher place.

Originally a club hit in the early 1980s when recorded by American singer Sharon Brown, the niece of songwriter Phil Medley. Released in March 1982, by the legendary Profile Records label from NYC. It was the he first ever record produced by Eddie O Loughlin who would later establish the famous Next Plateau label. “I Specialize In Love” spent three weeks at number two on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart. The single also charted on the UK Singles Chart, and charted In the Dutch Top 15 thus becoming an international club hit. A remixed version of the song was released in 1994, entering the UK Singles Chart for a second time.

Ben Liebrand now steps up and delivers yet again with his Classic Rework and the more club oriented DJ Mix. He manages to retain the pure disco vibe of street and fusion sounds, that, along with a simple rap is total boogie pop. Fantastic and still sounding as fresh as it did forty years ago. A filler on the Dancefloor!

New Age sounds meet new wave melodies, Grace Jones runs into the Dire Straits at Compass Point, while a Korg Mini Pops and a Roland CR78 make amends for Sly & Robbie's absence, Michael Mann pictures Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness', Robert Rauschenberg tries his luck at naturalism and an imagined Wally Badarou echoes through all of it.

Sandwiched between the title track and the yearning beauty of the album's final point 'Healing Feeling', you get all of that as well as collaborations with and contributions of NO ZU, David Hischfelder and the voice of Sui Zhen on 'Today', who would easily make Anna Domino take her proverbial hat off.

Tornado Wallace created an album that supersedes the requirements and expectations of a debut. Like a lost Island Records or a never released Made to Measure album, 'Lonely Planet' soundtracks notions and ideas that recall the nostalgic future in the past as much as it looks ahead.

Roy Davis Jr. was part of Phuture and then moved on to New York to record for Strictly Rhythm and DJ Duke's Power Music label. He was one of the main players in the 1990s House Music biz and is still very active until today.

Power Music issued his first long player „The Secret Mission“ and a number of Maxis. Some of his classics got reissued in 1996, sometimes remixed, re-edited and/or a bit faster than the original versions.

This remastered edition contains four of his biggest jams, carefully remastered by Thomas P. Heckmann (tph). „2B Or Not 2B“ and „Heart Attack“ exist in two different versions, all included as a „digital only“ bonus.

In addition, this album has three original songs, compared to only one in the previous album, and it is a pleasure to enjoy Fukui’s musicality even more. In light of its maturity and richness of content, it can be said to be a masterpiece that surpasses the first album. Sadly, Ryo Fukui passed away in 2016. In everything from his collaborations with MF Doom and the late Jay Dee to his more recent pairing with Freddie Gibbs, Madlib is easily one of hip-hop's golden revolutionaries. At times his production has been accused of being sparse, but that's not the case with Expressions. The debut, self-titled release from New York City’s Quicksand came out in 1990 and is the 18th release from Revelation Records. It includes four songs including an instrumental entitled “Hypno Jam With Dan”. Frontman/ guitarist Walter Schreifels, the main creative force behind Gorilla Biscuits and bassist for Youth OF Today, assembled the band’s lineup from his dissolved project called Moondog. Guitarist Tom Capone had founded Long Island’s Beyond, and had previously played in Bold, writing their album Looking Back. Drummer Alan Cage had been in Burn and played with Capone in Beyond. Bassist Sergio Vega arrived from the short-lived Collapse and a later incarnation of Absolution.

Soul Survivors is a new young Amsterdam band with a free spirit and a wild heart. The band has immersed themselves in soul, rhythm & blues by mastering all the old soul songs they love. With a setlist full of soul gems, they quickly built up a reputation in the Amsterdam live circuit. The band then used this musical suitcase to write powerful songs of their own. With this bagage, Soul Survivors gave dazzling performances in many Dutch clubs and festivals last season, including Jazz in Duketown, Zoetermeer Blues and Breda Jazz. The band has also gained a foothold in Germany in a short time with a growing fan base.

After the release of a 7” 45 rpm vinyl in 2023, on 13 September 2024 the debut album The Road Ahead will be released with ten soul hits. The compositions are rooted in the classical soul from the 60s and 70s by Motown and Stax, but also have the modern soul vibe. If you have little time, listen at least to focus track 3 "You're the One", a smooth song that can instantly be played on the radio. The band has the Rock Supplies in Amsterdam as its headquarters. This is where guitarist Max de Kok and bassist Dimitri Gelens have a studio where the songs are recorded. Singer Remko Spaaij has that dark soul voice that excites and thrills every room. Originally released on Klik Records, in 1975, Dread Locks Dread became one of the new Front Line label’s first key releases when reissued in 1978.

One of reggae’s best and most recognizable ‘toasters’, Big Youth broke new ground as a DJ in the early ’70s with a flowing, chant-like cadence that was equal parts melodic and invigorating, applying his infectious vocal approach to heavy social and political lyrics.

A huge favourite of the punk and new wave artists at the time of release, Big Youth was embraced by The Clash, via Don Letts, and PiL, amongst others. John Lydon was part of Richard Branson’s A&R envoy to Jamaica, helping sign credible artists to his new Front Line reggae label.

Featuring the legendary Skin, Flesh & Bones band, formed around Lloyd Parks (bass), drummer Sly Dunbar (before he started working with Robbie Shakespeare), Ansel Collins on keyboards, and trombonist Vin Gordon. The album was produced by Tony Robinson and Errol Thompson and mixed at the famous Joe Gibb’s studio.

Dread Locks Dread skanks from punchy, rhythm-heavy reggae to the deepest, dubbiest roots. The hypnotic Some Like It Dread reworks Dennis Brown’s “Some Like It Hot”, where the DJ’s toast is entwined with a bluesy harmonica (the dub version re-titled (Black Man Message). Also features a fiery version of Burning Spear’s “Marcus Garvey” (Marcus Garvey Dread), a tasty take on the John Holt classic “Keep on Moving” – Moving On and a scintillating dub of the Techniques’ rocksteady masterpiece You Don’t Care.

Not your typical DJ album by any means, the music equals the toasts and vice versa – an essential release for a dub fan or a Big Youth supporter.

Re-mastered at Abbey Road Studios, London.

Mathias Kaden is back on Rekids after 2022’s ‘Blackbird’ EP, this time with the four-track ‘Circulate’ EP featuring a remix from the hotly tipped William Kiss. Kaden’s ‘Freedom’ kicks things off with stripped-back machine rhythm, tasteful stab melodies and a deeply satisfying low-end groove before an iconic gospel vocal joins in. Title track ‘Circulate’ is another infectious low-slung crawler with crunchy synth hits and a hypnotic and classy vibe that will get the dancefloor moving.

On the flip, William Kiss remixes Mathias Kaden’s ‘Freedom’ following his recent EP on Rekids' sibling label Rspx and the release of his collaborative project, Not Without Friends, with Luke Alessi and Jordan Brando on Rüfüs DU SOL’s Rose Avenue. Kiss turns the track into a pumping peak-time cut with additional percussion and plenty of his signature Jackin’ flavour. Closing out the record, Kaden’s ‘Twisting Shadows’ introduces an acidic bassline and warped, dubbed-out vocals before dropping into an energetic trip.

Active since the mid-90s, Mathias Kaden appeared on Radio Slave’s Rekids for the first time in 2019 for ‘Liberate Drums’. In the follow-up to 2023’s ‘Chrysalis’, Zanias returns with ‘Ecdysis’, which travels even further into alternate dimensions, casting off all language and song structures in favour of something far more alien and sensual. Named after the final stage of emergence from a former self, ‘Ecdysis’ lays claim to an entirely new electronic soundscape influenced by the ethereal pioneering of Dead Can Dance, Enya and Fever Ray. Zanias’s voice morphs deftly between species and gender, exemplifying the oneness of conscious experience evoked by the more extreme psychedelic states, while the atmosphere is headily influenced by the Queensland rainforest where much of the recording took place, conjuring an environment rich with biodiversity. The creation of the album itself became a deeply healing process for its producer, and it is designed to function the same way for its listeners. Since first performing together in 2017, Ciel and CCL have spent years bonding over music, idiosyncratic cinema, and sampling as an art form. After watching the cult-classic movie “Technolust” – in which Tilda Swinton plays four different roles in the same film – Ciel and CCL viewed the role of the "genre-fluid" DJ/producer/multi-hyphenate in contemporary dance music in a similar absurdist light. On Tilda’s Goat Stare, the duo sought to create a record that straddles their love of cinematic immersiveness in dubstep, bass music, and deeper shades of prog with the tongue-and-cheek-sassy flair they’re both known for. Taking genre tropes and pastiche-surrealist scenes as a basis for experimentation, the duo’s music leans into each snapshot, making room for playfulness, cinematic surrealism and self-reference–a rotating cast of samples and characters, with a piece of them in each.

Highly regarded for a pair of innovative releases with 12th Isle, Lucy Duncombe is an experimental singer and
artist who uses technology to deftly abstract songcraft in ways that uniquely pique the imagination. With
’Sunset, She Exclaims’ Lucy diversifies Modern Love’s 7” series via a trio of works that embody influences
ranging from doo wop to avant garde and pure pop forms, in a style of melismatic sound poetry weft with
Jacquardian intricacy. It’s a truly precious, beguiling and evocative record that will reward repeat plays for
eons to come, much in the manner of contemporary classics such as Kara-Lis Coverdale’s ‘Grafts’, or Laurie
Anderson’s ‘O Superman’.
The star of this short story is no doubt ‘Sunset, She Exclaims’, where Lucy reframes Jeff Alexander and
Anthony Wilson’s haunting ballad, ‘Come Wander With Me’, used as a titular device in The Twilight Zone’s
swansong episode, 1964, and which has since notably featured on Vincent Gallo’s ‘Brown Bunny’(2003). In
Duncombe’s larynx and motherboard, the song is dissected and reworked as a glossolalic froth of hiccuped
melody blooming into crepuscular harmony. Its effect is practically hormonal; affective as indole in, as
she puts it, “reducing the stench of the real”, whilst distilling the saccharine sadness of the original to a
synaesthetic, dream-nudging whiff of nostalgia.
Once you prize yourself away from that A-side, Lucy’s B-side only lures deeper into blurred hyper-pop
fantasy. The precedents of Maria Chavez’s experimental sound poetry and Niecy Blues’ raw soul hover around
‘Ghosting’ and ‘Ghosted’, teasing the parameters of avant-pop into plasmic refrains, foregrounding the usually
unwanted parts of vocal performance - glitching digital artefacts and errant detritus - in a way that makes
the mind’s eye saccade, tracing the half-heard glowworms nestled in its bush of ghosts. Fine-tuned ears will
surely recognise the sort of brilliance on show here, and will no doubt revel in its gauzy glaze, which prizes
oneiric ambiguity, ephemerality, the supernatural, over anything more corporeal.

This is the first 12“ of the new Move D - “Recurrent Recollections“ series. “Something ’Bout The D“ is featuring three previously released tracks, that only ever appeared on Various Artists compilations on different record labels - from Fred P’s Earth Tones Vol. 1, via Russ Gabriel’s Ferox label to Lowtec’s Out to Lunch imprint. Now for the first time on Source Records, this 12“ kicks off with Aspiration 2010, a subtle and slow building Deep Acid House track evolving across the entire side A. On the B-side the title track “Something ’Bout The D“ takes the vibe back to 90s oldschool Detroit inspired house music - spiced with some 909 euphoria, some uplifting chords and a technoid, abstract but soothing melody. Closing out the 12“ on B2 is the much beloved and hard to find Move D contribution to Out To Lunch’s “Airbag Craftworks Vol. 2“ compilation “Marshmellow Boots“. A hypnotic and bouncing hookline is transformed over surrounding synth stabs and dubs. A subdued fluffy little groover in a typical Move D trademark fashion.
