"During lockdown we delved deep into the Crazy P vaults to see what might be lurking in there. Plenty of buried treasure to be found, but these 2 little beauties grabbed our attention and seemed to fit well together. The lead track, If Life Could Be This Way, was a jam we had between the 3 of us, the vocal's a bit of a one take wonder from Dani, and we didn't touch it! Fronted by singer-songwriter-guitarist Keeley Moss, Dublin dreampop act Keeley seemingly shot out of nowhere last June with the anthemic song "The Glitter and the Glue", a song dedicated to the memory of murdered German tourist Inga-Maria Hauser in Northern Ireland in 1988. Flute Boy is a harbinger of the forthcoming debut album Songs for Broken Ships by MD Pallavi and Andi Otto. The two tracks are physically exclusive to the 7“ single, but are in the digital package of the LP album.

Flute Boy is a folktronica lullaby, a cute waltz with traces of dub and acid in the finish. The B-side, Look Again, presents an almost neoclassical ballad with MD Pallavi's vocals floating expansively over a wonderful framedrum groove.

MD Pallavi & Andi Otto first crossed paths on a theatre stage in India ten years ago. They started collaborating instantly and in 2016 MD Pallavi's mesmerizing vocals for the downtempo raga Bangalore Whispers warmed hearts and ears. Their musical relationship flourished with artistic residencies in Bangalore and Hamburg, their respective hometowns, and a concert tour in Japan.

On their new recordings, MD Pallavi contributes songwriting for poems in her native Kannada, one of India's many languages. Andi Otto co-composed and produced the songs. The process took three years, and the results show an interwoven aesthetic vision of two artists with their contrasting musical backgrounds.

MD Pallavi is a singer, actress, filmmaker and performer from Bangalore, South-India, where she trained in Hindustani music and performed poetry since childhood. Andi Otto is a composer, cellist and DJ from Hamburg, Germany, known for his idiosyncratic and unconventional dance music productions for labels such as Multiculti, Shika Shika and Pingipung.

When we first heard from recent Kompakt signing Emma Kollmorgen, with 2021’s “You Are The”, she was hymning the complexity of romance: “Love is scary as fuck!”, she said. On her debut EP, “1243”, she’s built on that intensity and offered up a five-track suite of night-vision electronic pop, bristling with a stealthy sensuality. It’s a cinematic collection, building from the brooding “Escape”, through the drifting, tactile pulses of “Taciturn”, the gritty, bustling noises that run underneath the smoke-signal torch-song of “All The Wild Animals”, and the closing, tear-stained melancholy of “Home”. “You Are The” reappears here as well, settling in perfectly amongst new friends.

It’s a completely assured first EP from an artist who’s been slowly and steadily building her own sonic world. From her early days, when she busied herself by learning guitar and joining bands, Kollmorgen always had a vision of doing something “more independent”, to allow her to find her own sound and write her own songs. A brief creative alliance with the Berlin DJ duo Dole & Kom led to some recordings and live performances. All the while, Kollmorgen was carefully shaping her production and sound designing skills with Ableton Live, and exploring distinctive musical terrain in collaboration with co-producer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Seidel (The Ocean Collective, Fern, Nightmarer). She joined the Kompakt family after a recommendation by Patrice Baumel, who also remixed her debut single with typical flair.

On “1243”, though, Kollmorgen fully inhabits her songs, gifting each of them with a sweet, subtle sway, her vocal and lyrical openheartedness balancing the bluer hues of her production. Each song is confident and poised, Kollmorgen relying on cross-thatched patterns of texture as a web to support her melodies: “I like patterns,” she says, “they give me something to hold onto, something stable in an unstable world.” The songs feel as though they’re grappling with moments of revelation and experience in Kollmorgen’s world, which makes sense, given her approach to music: “I never had a diary,” she reflects, “so writing songs is my way of expressing and dealing with life.” On 1243, you’ll catch some glimpses of life lived, made sonorous through songs beautifully sung.

Produced by Suif. It was 2017 when, chilling in the sunny Marseille in Provence, we first listened to this beat in Suif’s Studio. The French producer (Siska / Watcha Clan) had chopped a 70’s Anatolian hit and had turned it into a soul instrumental. We gently moved that diamond onto our hard disk and few months later we sent it to one of the deepest soul voices out there, known by the name of Cw Jones. Sam and Camille are two unique and talented artists hailing from Belgium who share a gift for writing compelling contemporary folk and singer-songwriter songs. They both released acclaimed debut albums in recent years and have been crossing paths on numerous occasions. Camille appeared in duets on Sam's debut EP and his first album, Sam featured in Camille's live band, each time expressing a profound musical chemistry. This collab EP seemed the logical next step, uniting their talents to craft an EP embodying heartfelt, warm, and uncomplicated songs.

"In the collaborative journey of crafting the songs on Waving, our different creative approaches brought about a unique synergy. We feel the result transcends our individual styles. Each song resonates with our individual aspirations, which makes playing them very refreshing and challenging."

Stripped to their core, these compositions on their debut EP are defined by the gentle interplay of acoustic guitars and harmonious vocals. Only subtle percussion and the occasional cello add subtle layers to the sonic tapestry. The two recorded the six songs on their debut EP by themselves in the intimate atmosphere of Sam's home studio, opting for a DIY and back-to-basics approach. Their primary focus was on capturing spontaneity and the essence of live performance. Musical sparring partner PJ Decraene added the final touches and mixed the EP.

Musicians who play on the track include Wally Badarou, John Lewis, and Brigitte Vinchon. The inspiration for the track was the increasing popularity of pop music. This exclusive Record Store Day 12” red vinyl includes the unreleased tracks “Baby Close the Window” and “Pop Muzik (Latin version)”. The Latin version of ”Pop Muzik” combines M’s vocals from the original 1979 version of “Pop Muzik” with a newly recorded instrumental by Latin American music group Rumba Calzada. “Baby Close the Window” was originally recorded in 1981 and features vocals from Brigitte Vinchon. Also featured is the original UK cut of “M Factor”. “M Factor” is the B-side to the original 1979 release of “Pop Muzik”. M is the stage name for musician Robin Scott. M has worked with many acclaimed musicians including Wally Badarou, Mark King, Phil Gould and Gary Barnacle of Level 42.
