Das Konzeptalbum 'Tommy' gilt als einer der Höhepunkte im künstlerischen Schaffen von The Who und insbesondere Pete Townshends, der fast alle Titel des Albums komponierte. Mai 1969 wurde Tommy als Doppel-LP von Track Records in Großbritannien veröffentlicht. Es erreichte Platz 2 der Charts und die Band ging im Anschluss auf Tour um das Album live vorzustellen. Die vorliegende Digipak-Doppel-CD enthält einen Mitschnitt aus Amsterdam am 29. September desselben Jahres. Es ist der einzige komplette Soundboard-Mitschnitt aus 1969 und wurde damals von Avro-fm im Radio gespielt.

Lucy Kruger ist eine Singer-/Songwriterin aus Kapstadt, Südafrika, die kürzlich nach Berlin gezogen ist. Ihre Performance konzentriert sich auf das Pure, Nackte eines Songs, langsamer psychedelischer Folk, der sowohl intim als auch ambient ist. Drones gepaart mit Traumlandschaften lassen die Geschichten treiben und abtauchen, einschlafen und aufwachen. Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys' erste LP »Summer's Not That Simple« wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit dem südafrikanischen Indie-Label Permanent Records veröffentlicht. Das Album enthält ein Meer von Gitarren im Gespräch mit fast geflüsterten Gedanken.

Nun wird sie ihr zweites Album »Sleeping Tapes For Some Girls« bei Unique Records veröffentlichen. Das neue Album ist ein leiser Begleiter für unruhige Abende. Das Album wurde aufgenommen, kurz bevor Lucy im Mai letzten Jahres von Kapstadt nach Berlin gezogen ist. Während dieser Zeit hatte sie leise ein weiches Netz von Liedern gesponnen und wollte deren Gefühl vor dem Umzug einfangen. Die Aufnahmen wurden für einen ganz bestimmten Zuhörer gemacht. In den Jahren davor ist Lucy zu Bett gegangen und hat sich dabei mit Geschichten und Klängen anderer Songwriter umgeben, die zu engen Begleitern geworden sind, die sie herausforderten, förderten und schließlich beschenkten. Sie wollte denen, die es brauchen könnten, dasselbe geben. Die Arrangements sind minimal und lassen Platz für Lucys Stimme und Gitarre, die überall präsent sind - reflektieren, widerstehen und versuchen, mit widersprüchlichen Gedanken zu argumentieren.

A Star Is Born Johnny Cash With His Hot And Blue Guitar! ist das Debütalbum der amerikanischen Musiklegende Johnny Cash, veröffentlicht am 11. Oktober 1957. Es war das erste Album, das auf dem Label Sun Records erschien. With His Hot And Blue Guitar! enthält vier seiner Hit-Singles: „I Walk the Line“, „Cry, Cry, Cry“, „So Doggone Lonesome“ und „Folsom Prison Blues“. Cash bewarb sich 1955 beim Musiklabel Sun Records, aber konnte dessen Gründer Sam Philips als Gospelsänger nicht beeindrucken. Cash wurde gesagt, er solle mit einem kommerzielleren Sound zurückkommen, da Philips glaubte, Gospel würde sich nicht verkaufen. Cash kehrte zurück und wie. Mit den Songs „Hey Porter!“ und „Cry, Cry, Cry“ startete, der in ärmlichen Verhältnissen aufgewachsene, Johnny Cash seine Weltkarriere. Bis zu seinem Tod am 12. September 2003 schrieb Cash über 1.000 Songs. Sein musikalisches Werk ist bis heute eines der wertvollsten der modernen Musikgeschichte. Seine genreübergreifende Musik umfasste Country, Rock and Roll, Rockabilly, Blues, Folk und Gospel. Before Disco, and before the transcendent echoes, Arthur studied to be a composer. His journey began in 1972, running away from his home in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Heading west to Northern California, Arthur studied Indian classical composition at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music followed by western orchestral music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, before ending two years later in New York at the Manhattan School of Music. Traversing the popular and the serious, Arthur composed "Instrumentals" in 1974, inspired by the photography of his Buddhist teacher, Yuko Nonomura, as Arthur described, "I was awakened, or re-awakened to the bright-sound and magical qualities of the bubblegum and easy-listening currents in American popular music". Initially intended to be performed in one 48 hour cycle, "Instrumentals" was in fact only performed a handful of times as a work in progress. The legendary performances captured live in New York at The Kitchen (1975 and 1978) and Franklin St. Arts Center (1977) feature the cream of that eras downtown new music scene including Ernie Brooks, Rhys Chatham, Julius Eastman, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, Garrett List, Andy Paley, Bill Ruyle, Dave Van Tieghem, and Peter Zummo. Pitchfork lauded "Instrumentals" Vol. 1 as a masterpiece and one of Arthur's "greatest achievements". Americana touching on Copeland, Ives, and maybe even Brian Wilson. "Instrumentals" Vol. 2 is a moving, deeply pastoral work performed by the CETA Orchestra and conducted by Julius Eastman. Also included are two of Arthur's most elusive compositions, 'Reach One', and 'Sketch For 'Face Of Helen' '. Recorded live in 1975 at Phill Niblock's Experimental Intermedia Foundation, 'Reach One' is a minimal, hypnotic ambient soundscape written and performed for two Fender Rhodes pianos. 'Sketch For 'Face Of Helen' ' was inspired by Arthur's work with friend and composer Arnold Dreyblatt, recorded with an electronic tone generator, keyboard and ambient recordings of a rumbling tugboat from the Hudson Rive...

That's because epic closer "Fewer Afraid" -all 19 minutes, 44 seconds of it-doesn't just revisit the themes and ideas on the ten songs that precede it, but also offers a self-aware summary of the Connecticut band's entire history. It's the conclusion of all the stories within the record as well as a nod to all the lives that helped make them-little glimpses of everything that's come before, on both a micro, immediate level, and a more universal one. "That song is a higher level look at my whole life and the whole world," explains vocalist/guitarist David F. Bello, "as well as the album, our band and our discography. It places the band in the context of the rest of the world, as if we're listening to everything that came before. It touches on all the themes of the previous songs, but there are also callbacks to songs from earlier in our career. But in this song, they're the object, not the subject-I'm talking about a world in which these things happen, not talking about these things happening." Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the band-completed by Steven K. Buttery (drums and percussion), Joshua Cyr (bass/vocals) and Katie Dvorak (vocals/synth)-had nothing but time to realize the full extent of their musical and thematic aspirations. And so, four years on from lauded third album Always Foreign, they were able to make what is undoubtedly the band's most ambitious and epic record to date. It was the beginning of 2019 at the WattHaus studios in Perpignan when The In-Fuzzed rose from the incandescent ashes of Hair & The Iotas. They still played garage rock, but with even more fuzz and energy! The arrival of an ex-member of El Vicio and Destination Lonely certainly shook things up a bit. After several concerts in the South of France and two singles, The In-Fuzzed now release their first, eponymous album in collaboration with Staubgold. 13 original titles, linked together seamlessly, have the listener in a state of constant alert, on the lookout for any blast and under the impression that anything may burst from the depths of this devilish rock'n'roll among roaring fuzz-pedals and explosive drums. Two guitars (sometimes three: Nico Delseny, ex-member of the Beach Bitches and Sonic Chicken 4, lends a strong hand on some tracks) and an infernal rhythmic section (Michel Morales and Franck Menguin, both veterans of Hair & The Iotas) are recorded live at the rehearsal room by the musicians themselves on an 8-track 1/2" recorder, a testament to the thrive for authenticity that characterizes them. The vocals and some percussion are overdubbed by Nicolas Faus (El Vicio / Destination Lonely) and Guillaume Picard (Beach Bitches / Les Bellas / Hair & The Iotas). All compositions are original, including 'Motor City Baby' and 'Xmas Night', early versions of which appeared as singles in 2019. 'Lost Time Rock'n'Roll' appeared in 2020 on Renaud Picard's (The Liminanas) new label. 'Blind Man', on the other hand, was exhumed from Nicolas Faus' time with Destination Lonely. The track is so good that Destination Lonely have also re-recorded it with different lyrics and released it on their latest album. Herman Chin Loy wants the world to know the truth about his musical vision, realized in a series of fantastic records released throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s. And how his mission was interrupted in the early 1990s.

“I would like to start off by saying: what about the half that has never been told, who so bold, for the price of gold. The first part is like a Jamaican proverb, but who so bold, for the price of gold, is the part that I put in, because it is all about gold. My mission on this earth is all about the music. But if you want to know the truth, follow the money!”

Herman’s musical trip had a wonderfully sunny start, before ending in acrimony and intrigue. Follow the money indeed… He started by selling records for Leslie Kong, then opened his own One Stop record shop, before moving on to KG’s electrical appliance store in Halfway Tree and deejaying at their discoteque, the Lotus A Go Go.

“It was the age of Aquarius! Whatever was in the air, or what got my attention at the time would find its way into the music, cos I was very creative.”

So Herman turned his keen ears towards record production. The Aquarius and Scorpio labels had a fine run of hit tunes, known for their unusual arrangements and imaginative productions. Many cuts featured Herman himself talking over them. Others were moody instrumentals, for which Herman invented the name Augustus Pablo.

“The name came out of my head. Augustus Pablo – it sounded real not normal! Horace Swaby is the one that I really put the name with, but before that it was Lloyd Charmers, he did some songs for me under that name. Well Horace Swaby came back to me and said can I use the name on my own productions, and I said sure, go ahead. Cos I was not interested in money per se, I was interested in helping others along.”

Kingston in the early 70s was on fire with new music, and Herman put on the afterburners to release Aquarius Dub, probably the world’s first dub LP.

“People always used to come to the store and they want to buy the dub music, but they couldn’t get it easily, so I said let me put all these things together as an LP, and let’s put no label on it so it looks like a dub [plate], and let’s sell it as a dub album. And I was the first one to do that, for sure. I remember when I took the record down to sell it to Randy’s, well they just scoff at it to some degree. Well if people didn’t want to sell my music, then I would just say ‘fuck off with you’, I’ll just sell my music myself, from my own shop and nowhere else.”

Herman then opened the Aquarius Records shop on Constant Spring Road, with a busy bus stop right outside providing a captive audience. Big speakers were placed out in the street, and Herman acted as a vibes man and entertainer, running in and out of the shop and dragging customers inside. As the crowds grew bigger, Aquarius became extremely influential, and the energetic Herman could make or break the latest tunes.

“Well once we get going now, the Aquarius record shop sells more records than anyone in Jamaica. And the people get to know me and come to hang out to see what we play. And soon all musicians start gathering there, like Tommy McCook and the Wailers and everyone, cos Aquarius was the place to be.”

In one infamous incident, Peter Tosh was hanging around outside the shop, when plain-clothes police grabbed the spliff he was smoking and dragged him back to Halfway Tree police station, where he was brutally beaten. Herman and Tommy McCook were the ones who bailed him out.

“Peter Tosh was feisty and got in some trouble sometimes, but then we all did – heheheh. I had always hung around with the bad boys.”

Herman had by now brought his brother Lloyd into the business, and together they opened the Aquarius Studio, fitted out to an extremely high standard by Rosser Electronics, from Swansea in Wales. The studio is probably most remembered today for the recordings made there by Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh. But it was also the seedbed for some interesting offshoots into jazz and soul, with Herman always pushing up against the boundaries of what was conventional. Interestingly, Herman retains a huge affection for Lee “Scratch” Perry, and the mystic experiments that came out of his Black Ark studio.

“Well Scratch was a mad guy, a crazy dude. When we were a youth, the two of us make some records with a bit of screaming and shouting on top. So I come with “here is the news, the great bugga wugga from arugga”, and some other foolishness, just like Scratch, who come with the Chicken Scratch. It was a youthman thing. Then later he came into the shop one day looking like Haile Selassie. And I say “bloodclaat Scratch, you can’t go around looking so”, and he take off him cap and looked inside and pull out some cigarette butt he found in there. And he had a girlfriend name Pauline, and when the two of them fall out, he threw everything out of the studio that had the letter P on it! He was one crazy dude.”

Herman was developing his own unique world view derived partly from a rejection of conventional politics, alongside a distinctive reading of the Bible.

“Musicism is because you have socialism, communism and capitalism, so I thought Musicism would be a good thing to forge people together, to stop them yelling at each other and murdering each other. I thought it would be a good place for everybody to come together. Then I started a little thing down by Trenchtown there, where I was getting people from Rema and from Jungle to get together, but it mashed up in a little while because in the heat of the moment the guns would bark, and for the sake of my life I opted out of that, you know. But Musicism was a thought, so I continued to have an album called Musicism, and you’re talking about people like Linval Thompson, Sugar Minott. I was saying to the people of Jamaica, let’s not vote JLP, let’s not vote PNP, let it be that Musicism is a place where it’s not politics, and where people can talk to each other, so Musicism was birthed out of that.. So we had all sorts of things going on with the Musicism label, and I would put an album with the vocal and then have another album with the dub, because I was into business, I was into making money, but what drives me into the music was the music itself, because I really love the music.”

This reissue is of two extremely rare LPs that came out on Musicism in 1983, a couple of years after dub had declined in popularity as an album form in Jamaica. They were released in the generic 12-inch sleeves of the American label TK Disco, which had recently ceased trading, picked up on Herman’s travels to Miami. The labels were either blank or stamped with the wrong song titles from a similarly obscure vocal compilation. A handful of copies were exported to London and the U.S., and the remainder were sold exclusively by the Aquarius shop.

“In the studio we used to work really fast in them days, especially with Karl Pitterson. Karl Pitterson was one of the most efficient engineers you would ever find, and him and me had a great understanding. So the studio ran real fast. Then there was this guy Steven Stanley who was just a little youngster when he start with me, but he went on to Compass Point and working with Chris Blackwell. He was a little uppity, a bit prideful, although he didn’t even recognise that, but still he was a really good engineer. So we had these people to work for me, and it didn’t take long to do what I did. So it’s strange that we did these things so fast, so many years ago, and they still have a public that wants to hear them today.”

Herman also had an eccentric label called Selection Exclusive which mainly released 12 inch singles with hand-stamped titles on the labels, or sometimes no title at all, wrapped in more of those generic TK Disco sleeves. If this wasn’t enough to throw off even the most serious collector, instead of the expected version on the B-side, there would often be a totally different tune from 10 years earlier, sometimes with Herman whispering smokey rhymes over the top.

“Selection Exclusive was birthed where I was selling this dub album exclusive, but it was expensive. So I don’t think much people knew about these records, but the collectors knew, and these records were selling for hundreds of [Jamaican] dollars more than a normal LP. So this dub album come out and I give it to the sound systems, I give it to Gemini and Merritone, so that they play it all the time. I never give my records to the radio station. And I made so much money out of this album, that it was exclusive expensive!” Finally, it was a family dispute with Herman’s brother Lloyd that derailed the Aquarius and Musicism train. The outcome was that Lloyd took the studio and Herman kept the record shop.

“I go to court twice and lost all of that money, and my brother won control of the studio. But then they try to write me out of history. And I get so upset when I really think about it. I’m not saying I’ve never done anything wrong in my life. We all need to repent. You see, I have to tell the truth: what about the half that’s never been told! But there was some skulduggery going on then.”

Nowadays there are no record shops on Constant Spring Road. The block which housed Aquarius is now home to Usain Bolt’s Tracks And Records restaurant. Herman joined the steady exodus of Jamaicans to Miami, and today finds him using his verbal dexterity and irrepressible energy to sell Sorrel drinks filled with medicinal herbs, ginger and turmeric. But his music is still out there, circling the globe through speakers and headphones...

“I always want my music to be on a higher plane, like to carry some message. And a dub album gives plenty of space for the message. Just because there are no words, it doesn’t mean that it don’t communicate. If you listen carefully, you will hear it properly, and so the message will reach down through the years, and spread to the people again. This is a spiritual conversation, cos I have reached to a different spiritual plane!”

Voivod wurde 1982 in Jonquière, Quebec, von Sänger Denis „Snake“ Belanger, Gitarrist Denis „Piggy“ D'Amour, Bassist Jean-Yves „Blacky“ Thériault und Schlagzeuger Michael „Away“ Langevin gegründet und nahm eine Reihe von Demos auf, bevor Brian Slagel auf die Band aufmerksam wurde und einen Vertrag mit Metal Blade Records unterzeichnete. Das Ergebnis war das Debütalbum „War And Pain“, das im August 1984 veröffentlicht wurde. Zu dieser Zeit teilten sich alle vier Mitglieder eine Wohnung in Montreal und lebten von 150 Dollar Sozialhilfe pro Woche. Da sie die Schule bereits hinter sich hatten, konnten sie fast jeden Tag proben, was zur Entstehung ihres zweiten Albums „Rrröööaaarrr“ führte. Während der Aufnahme des Albums wurde fast die gesamte Ausrüstung aus dem Proberaum gestohlen. Um Geld aufzutreiben, organisierte die Band zusammen mit ihrem Manager Maurice Richard das legendäre „World War III“-Festival. Dort lernten sie Karl-Ulrich Walterbach kennen, der Voivod davon überzeugte, bei seinem Label Noise Records zu unterschreiben. „Rrröööaaarrr“ erblickte schließlich im März 1986 das Licht der Welt. Mit Songs wie „Ripping Headaches“, „Thrashing Rage“ oder dem ultimativen „To The Death!“ bleibt es bis heute eines der extremsten Alben von Voivod. Nachdem diese ultimative Ausgabe des zweiten Voivod-Albums lange Zeit nicht erhältlich war, habt ihr nun die Möglichkeit, selbst zu beurteilen, ob „Rrröööaaarrr“ wirklich das beste Werk der Kanadier ist oder nicht.

"The Raincoats" wird nicht ohne Grund als ein der Highlights der Post Punk Periode gehandelt, gilt als einer der wichtigen Momente des Durchbruchs von Frauen in der Musik und war in den letzten zehn Jahren nirgendwo käuflich zu erwerben. Das Album wurde 1979 von Ana da Silva, Gina Birch, Palmolive und Vicky Aspinall mit Geoff Travis und Mayo Thompson aufgenommen und wurde von den Originaltapes neu gemastert. Die CD wartet überdies mit einem zusätzlichen Track von der ersten Single "Fairytale In The Supermarket" auf und kommt als enhanced Version mit Videomaterial aus den Jahren 1977 und 1979 und mit dem Video zu "Fairytale In The Supermarket", das von Gina Birch gefilmt wurde. Die Linernotes schrieb Kurt Cobain 1993: "I really don't know much about The Raincoats except that they recorded some music that has affected me so much that whenever I hear it I'm reminded of a particular time in my life when I was (shall we say) extremely unhappy, lonely and bored. 1988 machte sich ein Mitarbeiter der Firma Noise Records selbstständig und gründete TRC (The Record Company). Neben den Dirty Strangers (mit Mitgliedern der Rolling Stones) und der spanischen Hardrockband Helpless, gab es diese seltsame Platte mit dem futuristischen Auge auf dem Cover: Mystery. Schon bei Veröffentlichung im Jahr 1988 hat die LP gnadenlos polarisiert. Während man sich im deutschen Metal Hammer mit drei Punkten und einer etwas hilflos wirkenden Kritik zufrieden geben musste, erntete man im englischen Kerrang eine Vier-K-Wertung und Aussagen wie „Was wir hier haben ist der interessanteste Progressive-Thrash-Crossover, den ich seit Langem gehört habe“. Rückblickend ist dennoch klar: Für dieses Album war die Welt 1988 noch nicht bereit. Hört man sich die hochgradig eigenwilligen und definitiv auch einzigartigen Stücke von Mystery an, dann kann man bereits vermuten, dass hier keine jungen Heavy Metal Fans am Werke waren, die auf den Pfaden ihrer Idole wanderten. Die Songs stecken voller Ideen, die die meisten Metalmusiker niemals in dieser Form gehabt hätten. Und auch die Umsetzung ließ schon immer den Verdacht aufkommen, dass hier Profimusiker aus einem anderen Genre beauftragt wurden, ein Heavy Metal Album zu schreiben und aufzunehmen – natürlich standesgemäß mit Künstlernamen wie The Lion oder Mike Battista. Genau dies hat sich nun nach Jahren der Nachforschungen bewahrheitet und wird am VÖ-Tag enthüllt. Danach dürfte die Scheibe auch bei einer anderen Zielgruppe zu einem Objekt der Begierde werden…doch mehr wird hier und heute noch nicht verraten.

Eine erste Version des Albums wurde ursprünglich im Sommer 2017 im Heimstudio von Fitzsimmons aufgenommen, aber infolge der Trennung von seiner Frau aufgegeben. In 2018 reiste William nach Nashville, TN, um das Album noch einmal komplett neu aufzunehmen. In Zusammenarbeit mit Produzent Adam Landry (Deer Tick, Los Lobos, k.d. Lang, Vanessa Carlton) verbrachte Fitzsimmons einen Monat damit, das ursprüngliche Album mit Beiträgen von Freunden wieder aufzubauen. Die daraus resultierenden 11 Songs erzählen die Geschichte einer mehr als ein Jahrzehnt währenden Ehe, die unerwartet zerbrach. "Mission Bell" beinhaltet Songs über Verrat, aber auch Versöhnung und Vergebung. Und Geschichten von Menschen, die ihr Bestes geben, sich aber dabei manchmal gegenseitig zerstören. Es ist Fitzsimmons erstes analoges Album. Der Klang ist roh, real und greifbar. Die vertraute Umgebung von akustischen Gitarren ist immer noch da, wird aber jetzt großzügig von Synthesizern, E-Gitarren, Drum Loops und Geigen ergänzt. "Cutting to tape was new and honestly rather terrifying to me. There's no 'we'll fix that in post' kind of shit going on. What you play is what you're gonna hear on the record. But there's a specialness you get in a performance when you don't have a parachute. You either play it like it matters to you or you don't and I think that comes through so clearly in the recordings", erzählt Fitzsimmons.

"Calling Out Of Context" features 12 previously unreleased tracks of Buddhist Bubblegum Disco Electro Pop including the anthemic 'That's Us/Wild Combination', 'The Platform On The Ocean', 'Make 1, 2' and 'Arm Around You', all recorded during Arthur's prime years 1985-90.Collaborators include Mustafa Ahmed, Walter Gibbons, Steven Hall, Jennifer Warnes, and Peter Zummo. 30 years have passed since Arthur Russell left us, in relative obscurity, from AIDS complications in 1992. Yet his work-as composer, songwriter and dance music innovator-is better known now than ever before. Since Audika Records and Arthur's partner Tom Lee began excavating and curating Arthur's vast archive beginning in 2003, critics worldwide have hailed Russell as a visionary. Countless younger artists cite him as an influence. There has been an internationally acclaimed documentary film (Matt Wolf's Wild Combination) and biography (Tim Lawrence's Hold onto Your Dreams), a critical study (Matt Marble's Buddhist Bubblegum) along with various tribute albums, concerts and events. In 2016 Arthur Russell's archive was acquired by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center as part of their American Music Collection. If Arthur Russell isn't quite the pop star he imagined he would be, he is at least widely considered one of the most significant figures in late 20th century American music. The majority of the material selected for "Calling Out Of Context" comes from two sources. The first was a completed album which dates from 1985, entitled "Corn" of which three very different test pressings remain (complied and reissued in 2015). The second source was material earmarked for Rough Trade recorded between 1986 -1990. Both 'Make 1,2' and 'Hop On Down' (originally titled 'Hop On Down To Petland') are two songs that Arthur wrote specifically with the plan of releasing as singles. Available on vinyl for the first time in 10 years, with new cover design by Tim RutilliCalifone's earliest roots lie in the band Red Red Meat, from whence came Califone's founding members Tim Rutili and Ben Massarella and its longtime producer Brian Deck. The band's first release was a self-titled EP on Flydaddy in 1998, followed later by the full-length debut, Roomsound, in 2001 (later reissued on Thrill Jockey) and eventually the band's Thrill Jockey debut, Quicksand/ Cradlesnakes in 2003. After touring for the release of Roomsound, Califone had little time off to take in the impact of the music they were creating. In three years, they recorded four albums (two instrumental, two song-based including Heron King Blues) and toured heavily in between with Wilco, Modest Mouse, The Sea and Cake and others. After the tour for Heron King Blues in 2004, Califone finally took a breath and came back together in late 2005 to begin recordings. They worked on it in chunks at 4Deuces Studio in Chicago with Brian Deck, in Long Beach and Phoenix with Michael Krassner, and at home in Los Angeles and Chicago until May 2006. The time away and each member's individual work naturally brought new elements into the sound of Califone's music. Both Rutili's and Becker's soundtrack work are more atmospheric, however the challenge of enhancing a scene of film without cluttering it or overwhelming it informed their approach to the new recording. Similarly, the burglary of Califone's equipment during the band's last tour (including guitars, banjo, a 1917 violin, bells and more) altered the sound as they had to find new gear on a tight budget. The instruments are new partners, new sounds that forced them to stretch in new directions. Limitations, obstructions and darkness, and the new possibilities they illuminate; roots and crowns. "In that way", says Rutili, "this album is a conscious and resolved thing. It fully realizes ideas we touched on in the past and where we come from as a band, and takes us into our next phase of life."

With their duo debut, Dean Spunt and John Wiese invite you to experience the frenzy of percussive space and discreet sound found inside The Echoing Shell.This is the first official collaboration between the two veteran music-makers, though their connection goes back to 1999. As John recalls, "[Dean] was in a high school arts program at CalArts. A friend and I were recording the first Sissy Spacek demo in the design studios there, and taking a tape to my car over and over again to check the mix. Dean was walking through the parking lot with a Locust shirt on, we said hello, and he immediately got into a car with two strangers to 'listen to a tape'."The tape-listening ended well, apparently. Dean and John became friends and fellow travelers in L.A. circles and beyond: in 2005, John did a remix for Dean's first band, Wives; in 2007, Dean played percussion with Sissy Spacek's 13-Tet Los Angeles; John toured with No Age several times and collaborated live with them in 2010. Under the Sissy Spacek name as well as his own, John's recordings for his own Helicopter label and many others kicked things off for him around the end of the century; since then, he's been constantly engaged in solos and collaborations on record, performances, and installations around the world.In addition to Dean's ever-growing discography with No Age, he curates his own label, Post Present Medium. In 2018, Radical Documents released Dean's solo debut EE Head, which explored concrète and experimental techniques in a four-part, album length piece.The Echoing Shell is born of Dean and John's shared understanding, using John's process common to Sissy Spacek: elaborate sound-collage works using source material originating from punk, hardcore and improvised music. A series of impositions, tape manipulation and edits recompose the material, cracking open the crust of the source, freeing its implied guts to steam forth in gushes of extreme noise. In the same spirit as Back from the Grave, our goal is to look back at what happened in the South of France near Perpignan at the beginning of the 21st century.As you can hear it in the first volume, the city of Perpignan (and its region, Northern Catalonia) has been a strong place for underground rock'n'roll for many years. In the 90's, there were a lot of garage bands and an important mods community. These guys created a spirit in the city that's still present today. This volume showcases the new bands created by Perpignan's city rockers and the country punks from the nearby villages. Bands like Les Gardiens du Canigou, The Ugly Things, The Likyds, The Toxic Farmers, The Vox Men, The Feedback, heard on the first compilation, spawned plenty of new formations. This time the scene has its own labels - Nasty Products and Profet Record are two of them. It has never been easier to record music and put it on vinyl. There are live venues all over the city. The beginning of the internet also makes life easier, even when you're in a town in the South of France near the Spanish border and the Mediterranean. Myspace is growing fast and local bands make contact with the other side of the Atlantic.The Sonic Chicken 4 are signed by In the Red and Trouble in Mind. Parisian labels are also interested in the work of bands from Perpignan. The Hushpuppies, ex-Likyds, go to the capital and are signed by Diamondtraxx. They're certainly the best known band of that era with their hit "You're Gonna Say Yeah", featured on Guitar Hero and in several commercial ads.Boosted by international touring, Catalan bands make their way into the world. The Fatals go on tour in Italy and Canada. The Sonic Chicken 4 are booked for a US tour while Jack of Heart, signed on Born Bad, play all over Europe. Looking at Dan Andriano's catalog, one might assume that making new music is old hat for the veteran vocalist, songwriter, bassist and primary member of the beloved Chicago punk outfit Alkaline Trio. Decades into his prolific career, though, Andriano is just as in love with the process as he was in those early days of sweaty clubs and cramped vans. On Andriano's new Epitaph Records album, Dear Darkness, that un?ceasing passion is evident on this solo, self-produced project, which follows his 2015 release (as Dan Andriano in the Emergency Room) Party Adjacent, finds Andriano venturing into deeply personal lyrical territory while also pushing the limits of just what his unclassifiable sound can be. While off the road in 2020, Dan Andriano amassed a sizable collection of ideas, including a small batch of songs he felt were ready to bring into the studio. He sent a handful of those tracks out to close friends and trusted collaborators and was particularly encouraged by the excited response from Mike Park, an old friend and creative confidante whose Asian Man Records released Alkaline Trio's first two albums. Park was thrilled by what he heard and encouraged Andriano to consider a working on a new solo project. It was near the end of 2020, and enough strides had been made in COVID-19 safety that Andriano felt safe to travel from his home in St. Augustine, Florida to Park's studio in San Jose, California. "He could tell that I was pent up and anxious and needed to do something productive and positive, and just get out of here," Andriano says of Park. "So he was very helpful in getting me out there." While in San Jose, Park introduced Andriano to brothers Randy and Dylan Moore both of whom would end up playing alongside Andriano on Dear Darkness. The group originally intended to record an EP, but Andriano had so much material to work with - and felt such a natural rapport with the Moore brothers - that the impromptu session led to a full-length album.

Der legendäre Singer/Songwriter Graham Nash feiert mit seinem neuen Album “This Path Tonight” ein glänzendes Comeback. Das Album erscheint auf seinem eigenen Label Blue Castle Records, das er zusammen mit David Crosby betreibt.

“This Path Tonight” ist sein erstes Album mit 10 eigenen Songs nach 14 Jahren und wurde von Shane Fontayne produziert. Es wird erhältlich sein als CD, Limited Edition CD+DVD (mit einen 1 ½ stündigen Konzertmitschnitt aus dem Jahr 2014) und LP. Der Titelsong “This Path Tonight” ist gleichzeitig die erste Single-Auskopplung des Albums. Der Song als auch das gesamte Album zeigen Graham Nash als Songschreiber im Wandel, der seine beeindruckende Karriere über fünf Dekaden mit The Hollies, CSN und CSNY reflektiert.

“What a pleasure it was recording this album,” says Graham Nash. “Shane and I had written 20 songs in a month and recorded them in eight days. The music has a different feel to my earlier albums although I hear echoes of each one. This journey of mine was one of self-discovery, of intense creation, of absolute passion.”

Zusammen mit Shane Fontayne, als Gitarrist kommt Graham Nash nach einer ausgiebigen US-Tour auch im Mai/Juni zu Konzerten nach Europa und wird das neue Songmaterial und viele seiner Klassiker wie Our House, Teach Your Children, Marrakesh Express, Just a Song Before I Go oder Wasted on The Way auch in Europa präsentieren.

“When you strip a song down to its very essence, you either have a song worth singing… or you don’t,” says Nash. “Playing music with Shane Fontayne is and always will be very satisfying. He has an innate sense of ‘performance’ and of arrangement. He never loses sight of the fact that the song must ‘come alive’, must have a reason for being sung in the first place. [INDIE EXCLUSIVE] Limited Edition Transparent Vinyl "We want to make people feel good about things that we feel terrible about." says David Brewis, who has co-led the band Field Music with his brother Peter since 2004. It's a statement which seems particularly fitting to their latest album, Flat White Moon released on 23 April via Memphis Industries.Sporadic sessions for the album began in late 2019 at the pair's studio in Sunderland, slotted between rehearsals and touring. The initial recordings pushed a looser performance aspect to the fore, inspired by some of their very first musical loves; Free, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles; old tapes and LPs pilfered from their parents' shelves. But a balance between performance and construction has always been an essential part of Field Music. By March 2020, recording had already begun for most of the album's tracks and, with touring for Making A New World winding down, Peter and David were ready to plough on and finish the record. The playfulness that's evident in much of Flat White Moon's music became a way to offset the darkness and the sadness of many of the lyrics. Much of the album is plainly about loss and grief, and also about the guilt and isolation which comes with that. Those personal upheavals are apparent on songs like Out of the Frame, where the loss of a loved one is felt more deeply because they can't be found in photographs and compounded by the suspicion that you caused their absence, or on When You Last Heard From a Linda, which details the confusion of being unable to penetrate a best friend's loneliness in the darkest of circumstances. Some songs are more impressionistic. Orion From The Streets combines Studio Ghibli, a documentary about Cary Grant and an excess of wine to become a hallucinogenic treatise on memory and guilt.. Others, such as Not When You're In Love, are more descriptive.
