The funk fans have been waiting for this one. Finally available on vinyl, Grant Green's near perfect slice of jazz funk and soul, Live at Club Mozambique, remastered and rendered back in the Motor City. Grant Green's band had been playing a series of live dates at Detroit's Club Mozambique, (before it became a fabled Male dance club) when this session was recorded live on two cold January nights in 1971. Powerhouse drummer Idris Muhammad and soulful tenor star Houston Person were brought in to supplement Green's current band featuring Ronnie Foster on organ and Clarence Thomas on Soprano and Tenor Sax and Blue Note producer Francis Wolff recorded. This treasure was never released, though, and (conjectures aside) remained in the Blue Notes vaults for 35 years before a 2006 CD release. Sounding incredibly fresh and live, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more real stamping of Grant Green at the top of his game. The LP blends extremely hypnotic and wild funk such as their opening cover of a local funk hit 'Jan Jan' by the Fabulous Counts next to laidback renditions of early 70's soul favorites 'Walk on By', 'Patches' and 'One More Chance' by the Jackson 5. It perfectly captures the magic of hearing a legendary band effortlessly doing their thing in a small club while the audience unwinds after a long work day. Green pulls it all together with his melodic genius and perfect delivery. Great artists make it seem so easy. No pretensions here, just a great band burning up the stage with unmistakable chemistry on what might be the ultimate jazz funk time capsule. Maybe you can't go back in time, but if you close your eyes and light a cigarette, you might be convinced you're sitting in a wood-paneled club on Detroit's Westside enjoying Grant Green and his band tear it up.

Elvin Jones, one of the true great drummers in jazz, recorded this album in 1971 after having led his own band for several years following his immortal work with the John Coltrane Quartet. Detroit has a long tradition of being the farm team for the Big Apple jazz big leagues, but just as important is the acknowledgement of local legends who left their mark on the city by staying put and releasing amazing music right in Detroit. Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet is one such group that could have and definitely should have had a wider audience in their day, but their recorded legacy continues to grow in estimation. So trat sie 2011 als Gastsängerin von Danger Mouse und Daniele Luppi für deren "Rome"-Album auf. Durch diese Zusammenarbeit inspiriert entstand im Jahr darauf das Album „Little Broken Hearts“ in Zusammenarbeit mit Danger Mouse.

Im Juni erscheint zum 10-jährigen Jubiläum neben der remasterten Version des Originalalbums eine Deluxe Edition auf 3 LPs bzw. 2 CDs. Darauf wird neben acht Alternativversionen und Remixen auch eine komplette Liveaufnahme des Albumrepertoires enthalten sein, die Norah Jones 2012 im texanischen Austin City Limits aufgenommen hatte.

Die Jazzsängerin Billie Holiday sang so intensiv, wie sie lebte. Mit nur 44 Jahren starb 'Lady Day', wie Lester Young sie nannte, nach einem Leben voller Gewalt und Drogen und hinterließ ein bedeutsames musikalisches Erbe. Mit ihrer bluesigen, von Bessie Smith beeinflussten Stimme veränderte sie für immer den Klang des amerikanischen Pop. Sie füllte ihre Songs mit ihrer Persönlichkeit, machte sie zu etwas Individuellem, und verabschiedete damit die kommerziell orientierte, leichte Kost der Tin Pan Alley. Am Ende entstand ein Gesangsstil, der unverwechselbar war - ein nahezu schockierender Umstand in einer Zeit austauschbarer Sänger und Bands. Diese Einspielung ist ein Paradebeispiel für diese Entwicklung.

Unbestritten ist, dass sich Holidays Stimme in den 50er Jahren veränderte. Sie wurde dunkler, tiefer, expressiver und zugleich so voller Gefühl, dass die Songs nur noch direkter ins Herz der Zuhörer gingen. Während einer sechstägigen Aufnahme im Jahr 1957 entstand "Songs for Distingue Lovers", ein legendäres Album mit sechs der besten Titel der Sängerin. Begleitet wird sie von den All Stars Harry 'Sweets' Edison, Ben Webster, Jimmie Rowles, Joe Mondragon, Barney Kessel, Red Mitchell, Alvin Stoller und Larry Bunker.

Das Material auf diesem Album stammt von einer Studiosession, die am 20. Juni 1968 von Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer und Joachim-Ernst Brendt im Schwarzwald stattfand – fünf Tage nach dem berühmten Auftritt Evans' auf dem Montreux Jazz Festival mit Bassist Eddie Gomez und Schlagzeuger Jack DeJohnette. Die bei Verve erschienene Aufnahme der Montreux-Performance gewann den Grammy, aber diese Studioeinspielung lag seither in den Archiven.

Den Lackschnitt für diese Veröffentlichung als Doppel-LP mit 45 rpm auf 200-Gramm-Vinyl für 2xHD übernahm Rene LaFlamme in den Masteringstudios von Bernie Grundman.
