As music fans know, James Brown wasn't just the greatest funk and soul singer the world has ever seen - he was also a musical visionary and businessman, who surrounded himself with geniuses who made him better and pushed him further. From horn masters Maceo Parker and Pee Wee Ellis to vocalists Lyn Collins and Bobby Byrd, Brown was a musical A & R master, restless and always looking for the next big thing. Most times, that would manifest in the latest James Brown smash under his own name. But not always. His stable of talent was overflowing in the 60s and 70s, and, thankfully, the tape machine in his studio was always rolling. Originally released in 1988, during the era of hip-hop's golden age of sampling, it's no surprise that just about every note heard in this incredible collection has been used on not one, but multiple rap classics. Which, at the time, was proof of Brown's (and his crew's) staying power. But we are over three decades beyond those days now, and it has lost none of its musical potency. Diving deeper into the vaults than the also-incredible Part 1 of the Funky People series, there is not a weak track in the bunch. Moving beyond well-known JBs cuts, things get interesting from the get-go with Bobby Byrd's monumental groove "I Know You Got Soul". Hank Ballard and Marva Whitney also enter the fray, leading the way to Myra Barnes's emotional and powerful "Message From The Soul Sisters (Parts 1 & 2)" and Lyn Collins's slow, smoldering cover of Isaac Haye's "Do Your Thing." Politics even get the funky soul treatment, with Fred Wesley & The JBs "You Can Have Watergate But Gimme Some Bucks And I'll Be Straight" and "I'm Paying Taxes, But What Am I Buying?" And it should not be overlooked that Maceo & The Macks instrumental workout "Soul Power ‘74" even features a proto-sampling snippet from MLK’s I’ve Been To The Mountaintop speech from 1968. This is another amazing collection of James Brown's funky friends, without one second of filler, brought to you as a glorious 2-lp gatefold by your friends at Get On Down.

A never-before released Mal Waldron Trio 1970 live recordings. First official release with the full permission and cooperation of the Mal Waldron Estate & INA (Institut National de l’Audiovisuel). This was recorded inside the Palais d’Orsay Hotel in Paris on March 10, 1970. The city’s International Sound Festival was being held at the time, and this recording was aired in the “Jazz Vivant” radio show presented by André Francis. The performance here is a first on record, and it captures the renaissance of pianist Mal Waldron, fronting a trio comprised of drummer Christian Vander (co-founder of the group Magma) and bassist Jean-François Catoire (a long-time partner of Vander). Waldron’s career was reviving after his European exile, a lengthy hiatus tied to his patient process of reconstruction after years spent fighting his addiction. In 1969 he recorded Free at Last for the brand-new ECM label (it was their very first production) and two years later he would do the same for the Enja label. Before that, in 1970, he had also toured in Japan for the first time, and it would make him instantly popular there. Before the present concert recorded on March 10, 1970, Mal Waldron had appeared the previous year (a summer gig) in a club at Antibes, the Early Bird, playing with the same comrades, namely Christian Vander and Jean-François Catoire. Many critics had praised that trio’s quality in the media, and the late Maurice Cullaz, a great admirer of Waldron, even went so far as to say he had “rarely heard these three musicians play in such an extraordinary manner.” So it was quite logical, when the trio got together again in March in Paris, that the same cohesion would be apparent in their opening tune “Rat Now,” a theme that had appeared on the Free at Last album recorded for ECM (November 1969) only four months before this concert. The pianist plays throughout in his characteristic style, the left hand accentuating a constant undertow while his right hand releases a controlled energy. Christian Vander’s unbridled percussion gives a free dimension to this tune, which lends a kind of austerity that shows the fundamental influence that the great Thelonious Monk had wielded over Waldron’s piano style, alongside that of Bud Powell: ”After I fell into the depths, I couldn’t find the lyrical side of my playing again. The way I expressed myself had become more dense; it had refocused itself more.” That legacy is even more palpable in the tune that follows, “Champs Elysées,” a composition from the album Impressions (1959). The melody lines, impregnated by the blues, mingle gleefully with the whirling figures provided by Mal and his partners. “Rock My Soul”—and its heady tempo, where once again we can measure the strength and complementary nature of Waldron’s left hand, transmitting a breakneck rhythm beneath the controlled lyricism coming from his right hand—also appeared among the pianist’s recently recorded compositions on the Free at Last session. Vander’s tumultuous drumming here feeds the flow with a robust jazz that is brimming with vigorous phrases; and when the tempo dies down, the double bass of Jean-François Catoire instils a truce that fools no-one: it heralds a feverish finale. The final theme “Mount Fujiyama” was inspired by a trip to Japan that Waldron made in the winter of 1969-70. Here the music carries the imprint of serenity, yet once again it is the reflection of Mal Waldron’s deep-rooted New York heritage. The funk fans have been waiting for this one. Finally available on vinyl, Grant Green's near perfect slice of jazz funk and soul, Live at Club Mozambique, remastered and rendered back in the Motor City. Grant Green's band had been playing a series of live dates at Detroit's Club Mozambique, (before it became a fabled Male dance club) when this session was recorded live on two cold January nights in 1971. Powerhouse drummer Idris Muhammad and soulful tenor star Houston Person were brought in to supplement Green's current band featuring Ronnie Foster on organ and Clarence Thomas on Soprano and Tenor Sax and Blue Note producer Francis Wolff recorded. This treasure was never released, though, and (conjectures aside) remained in the Blue Notes vaults for 35 years before a 2006 CD release. Sounding incredibly fresh and live, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more real stamping of Grant Green at the top of his game. The LP blends extremely hypnotic and wild funk such as their opening cover of a local funk hit 'Jan Jan' by the Fabulous Counts next to laidback renditions of early 70's soul favorites 'Walk on By', 'Patches' and 'One More Chance' by the Jackson 5. It perfectly captures the magic of hearing a legendary band effortlessly doing their thing in a small club while the audience unwinds after a long work day. Green pulls it all together with his melodic genius and perfect delivery. Great artists make it seem so easy. No pretensions here, just a great band burning up the stage with unmistakable chemistry on what might be the ultimate jazz funk time capsule. Maybe you can't go back in time, but if you close your eyes and light a cigarette, you might be convinced you're sitting in a wood-paneled club on Detroit's Westside enjoying Grant Green and his band tear it up.

Das „Italotape“ im Kassettendeck spielt den „Hitsong von uns Beiden“. Das ist alles so schön „Verkackt“, das klingt doch wie „Zukunftsmusik“!

Carsten Meyer brachte 1998 unter dem Namen „Erobique“ sein Debut „Erosound“ heraus. Genau 25 Jahre später veröffentlicht der nun 50-jährige sein zweites Erobique-Album auf seinem eigenen Label A-sexy.

Dreizehn abwechslungsreiche Tracks und Songs zwischen Feriendisco und Rhythmusbox-Rave, aufgenommen und produziert mit vielen seiner FreundInnen und WegbegleiterInnen.

25 Jahre, das ist ziemlich genau die Zeit, die Disco von den legendären Loftparties des Pioniers David Mancuso zu den beeindruckenden Massenspektakeln der Auftritte von Daft Punk gebraucht hat.

Oder aber von Meyers Geburt bis zu seiner ersten Langspielplatte. Warum also erst jetzt ein zweites Album als „Erobique“? Auftritte improvisiert Meyer seit Jahren vor tanzendem Publikum. Selbst seine Hits „Easy Mobeasy“ und „Urlaub in Italien“ sind keine Popsongs im eigentlichen Sinne, sondern entstanden aus spontanen Eingebungen, im Adrenalinrausch, mitten auf der Party, mitten im Moment! Mitgesungen und wieder verklungen. Live mitgeschnitten und raus damit. Bloß nicht wiederholen! Jedes Erobique-Konzert ist ein Versuch, Unvorhergesehenes, Ungeahntes und Unfälle zu einem einzigartigen Dabeisein-Moment zu bauen. „Fehler ist King“ sagte der geistreiche Knarf Rellöm einmal - und Carsten Meyer ist der King der Fehler!

Wie soll man solche Momente denn bitteschön im Studio hervorzaubern, so ganz ohne Fete, ohne die Energie, die auf so einem Kindergeburtstag für Erwachsene auf die Bühne zurückschwappt?

Meyer entsann sich eines anderen Erobique-Hits, und wandelte seinen Titel entsprechend ab:

Schlagzeuger Lucas Kochbeck (The KBCs, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band), der Carsten mittlerweile auch bei seinen Live-Gigs unterstützt, sowie Nachbar und Kumpel Christoph M. Kaiser, (ehemals Bassist bei den Jeremy Days, mittlerweile Filmmusik- und Popstratege) legten das Groove-Fundament mit leuchtenden Kacheln, wie einst im Trinity, Hamburgs legendärer 80er-Disko.

Sophia Kennedy kam zum Singen aus dem Nachbarstudio vorbei und Lieven Brunckhorst schleppte gleich den ganzen Bläsersatz von Jan Delays Big-Band Disco No1 mit vors Mikrofon.

Harfen, Xylophone und Violinen nahm Meyer in seinem Musikraum beim Hamburger Fischmarkt oder bei Tobias Levin, in dessen Electric-Avenue Studio mit Fleetblick, auf.

Es ging nach Berlin, wo Carsten sich endlich mit seinem Held Siriusmo traf, um einige Ideen durch den elektronischen Wolf zu drehen. Nicola Rost von Laing schaute vorbei und hinterließ unfassbar dichte Chöre und herrliche Gesänge.

Zum Schluß wurden alle Spuren ins schwäbische Ludwigsburg gebracht, wo Freundeskreis-DJ und Discoexperte Martin Welzer alias DJ Friction dem ganzen Wahnsinn einen unglaublich warmen und dancefloor-freundlichen Gesamtklang verschraubt hat.

Zurück zum Zeichenbrett: Das Coverartwork ist, wie alle A-sexy Veröffentlichungen,

von Meyer höchstpersönlich gemalt und gestaltet, schließlich war sein ursprünglicher Berufswunsch ja Schulbuchillustrator.

So entstand im Laufe eines Sommers eine musikalische Pralinenschachtel, die nicht nur die Holiday-Playlist seiner Fans und HörerInnen bereichern wird, sondern auch sein mehrere Quantenbyte tiefes Archiv von Ideen und Skizzen ein kleines bisschen dünner werden ließ.

Denn außerhalb seiner Diskomessen, landauf-landabwärts, ist Meyer im letzten Vierteljahrhundert ja nicht untätig geblieben:

In den Jahren von 1998 bis 2006 entwickelte er mit DJ Koze und Cosmic DJ als International-Pony hypermodernen Elektronik-Soul.

Er betreute zusammen mit Jacques Palminger und Chris Dietermann beim Projekt „Songs for Joy“ am Maxim-Gorki-Theater Berlin Hobby-SongtexterInnen beim Popmusizieren, so entstand 2007 der heimliche Hit „Wann Strahlst Du?“ mit dem tollen Text von Barbara Stützel.

Überhaupt, Theater: Für den Theaterregisseur Herbert Fritsch arrangierte er die Hits von Gino Paoli und Hugo Wolff für überdrehte Abende am Schauspielhaus Zürich (2016) und am Residenztheater München (2015), für Stefan Pucher drehte er die Märchen Hans Christian Andersens durch den Heimorgelwolf (2010).

Für die Kollegen von Studio Braun brachte er die „Dorfpunks“ am Schauspielhaus Hamburg zum Klingen, direkt danach entwickelte er mit ihnen den authentischen Neue-Welle Sound für deren Mockumentary „Fraktus“, die 2012 in die Kinos kam.

Da wären wir also bei Film-und Fernsehmusiken. Auch hier gab es in den vergangenen Jahren für Meyer einiges zu tun. Am schönsten gelang ihm der Soundtrack für die beliebte Fernsehserie „Der Tatortreiniger“ mit Bjarne Mädel in der Titelrolle.

Ganz nebenbei brachte der „Tausendsassa“ (Zitat Peter Bursch) auch einige Alben auf seinem eigenen Label A-sexy heraus: Rumpel-Funk als „Babyman“, feinsten Chanson-Pop mit Palminger und Yvon Janssen für „Yvon im Kreis der Liebe“ und warmen, modernen Hammond-Jazz mit den „Hamburg Spinners“.

Und jetzt endlich sein Jubiläumsalbum, die Silberhochzeit mit sich selbst.

Karate Boogaloo aus Melbourne, Australien präsentieren mit Stolz "Hold Your Horses", ihre fesselnde neue Langspielplatte mit originalen Instrumentalstücken. Henry Jenkins, Hudson Whitlock, Callum Riley und Darvid Thor sind das Herzstück von Melbournes aufkeimender Instrumental-Soul-Bewegung und machen seit ihrer Schulzeit gemeinsam Musik. Die vier Freunde lernten sich in der Highschool kennen und haben die großen Instrumental-Bands wie Booker T & The MG's und The Meters genau studiert. "Hold Your Horses" ist Karate Boogaloos eigene Interpretation von instrumentalem Funk. Eine echte Reise vom Anfang bis zum Ende, bei der jedes Stück nahtlos in das nächste übergeht und eine Welt mit kinematischen Momenten, skurrilen Melodien und unheimlichen Dissonanzen erschafft, und von unbestreitbarem Super Heavyfunk untermauert wird. Alle Songs für "Hold Your Horses" wurden gemeinsam im Studio geschrieben, ohne dass eines der Mitglieder vorgefertigtes Material einbrachte. Es ist ein Prozess, der speziell darauf ausgelegt ist, die Stärken der Band und ihre Beziehung zueinander zu maximieren. Um das Erlebnis noch zu verstärken, erzeugt das LP-Cover (entworfen von dem in Melbourne lebenden visuellen Künstler Drez) ein interaktives optisches Kunsterlebnis, wenn die Innenhülle aus dem Umschlag entfernt wird. Backed by a diverse group of players including hard bop legends with Brazilians Moreira and Pascoal lending a fresh sound. Shimmering percussion, wind instruments and electric piano and guitar set the backdrop for Byrd's dramatic flight into a psychedelic space with his echo-laden trumpet blasts. The album ends on a rollocking funk featuring his full band that foreshadows the gold he would soon mine with the Mizell Brothers on his string of hit records recorded shortly after. Ein einzigartiger Longplayer der deutschen Funk-Champions The Mighty Mocambos: Scénarios" ist eine wilde Reise durch ikonische Performances, die auf 8-Spur-Bändern aufgenommen wurden, darunter gefeierte Versionen von Breakdance-Lieblingen wie "Axel F." und "Let The Music Play" sowie brandneues Originalmaterial, das speziell für Aufnahmen in ungewöhnlichen Umgebungen komponiert wurde.

Die Hamburger Deep-Funk-Köche sind bekannt für ihre intuitiven Aufnahmen, die die Energie einer Live-Performance einfangen, und mit dieser Platte gehen sie aufs Ganze.

Kurz vor der Pandemie nahm die Gruppe eine Live-Session im legendären Hamburger Plattenladen Groove City und einen improvisierten Auftritt beim Breakdance-Battle JAM PDM! in Potsdam auf. Beide wurden auf 45er Vinyls veröffentlicht, waren schnell ausverkauft und wurden zu Geheimwaffen für DJs. Während die meisten Bands im Jahr 2020 ihre Bühne ins Studio verlegten und eine Fülle von isoliertem, von Lockdown inspiriertem Material produzierten, nahmen die Mighty Mocambos - nie um ein Gegenmittel verlegen - die mobile Version ihres Aufnahmestudios mit auf die Straße.

Da beim Wohltätigkeitskonzert der Pitt Hopkins Music Session kein Publikum zugelassen war, nutzte die Gruppe die Gelegenheit, um meditative Folk-Soul-Instrumentals zu komponieren, die ausschließlich auf Saiteninstrumenten gespielt werden. Sweaty Funk funktioniert nicht per Videostream, aber das Format bot eine willkommene Gelegenheit, etwas ganz anderes zu schaffen. Auch ohne Strom und Schlagzeug sind die cineastischen "Four Two Three" und "Silent Heroes" unverkennbar als Mocambo-Themen zu erkennen.

Wenn man Nina Simones Credo folgt, dass es "die Pflicht eines Künstlers ist, die Zeit widerzuspiegeln", war es klar, dass weitere Konzerte auf der tragbaren Fostex R-8 Bandmaschine der Gruppe festgehalten werden würden, sobald sich die Welt langsam wieder öffnete. Glücklicherweise fielen die Einschränkungen genau auf den Abend, an dem die Band am 11. September 2021 auf der Open-Air-Bühne des Import Export in München auftrat. Der ausgedehnte, vom Afrobeat inspirierte Jam zu J.J. Cales "Carry On" zeigt, wie die Menschen zum ersten Mal nach einem Jahr wieder zusammen feiern und tanzen, und das manische "Munich Psycholympics" setzt alle aufgestauten Energien frei, die in der Vergangenheit geschlummert hatten.

Das leicht kafkaeske "Ghost Walk" wurde während eines Soundchecks für ein Konzert aufgenommen, das schließlich aus Sicherheitsgründen abgesagt wurde und spiegelt einmal mehr die Ungewissheit der damaligen Zeit wider. Im letzten Szenario kehren die Mighty Mocambos in eine volle Halle zurück und spielen "Let The Music Play" vor einem Publikum aus B-Boys und -Girls - ein Beweis für die schiere Kraft der Musik. Als Zugabe gibt es eine Akustikversion von "Where Do We Go From Here?" (ursprünglich mit Lee Fields aufgenommen) schließt das Album und seine rastlose Reise durch ungewöhnliche Aufnahmesituationen ab.

Alle Songs wurden speziell für die Live-Aufnahmen geschrieben oder arrangiert, um den DJ-freundlichen Trademark-Sound der Gruppe mit zusätzlichen Vibes und Impulsen des Publikums zu kombinieren. Die meisten von ihnen wurden aufgenommen, während sie zum ersten Mal öffentlich aufgeführt wurden.

Elvin Jones, one of the true great drummers in jazz, recorded this album in 1971 after having led his own band for several years following his immortal work with the John Coltrane Quartet.
