It's a statement which seems particularly fitting to their latest album, Flat White Moon released on 23 April via Memphis Industries.Sporadic sessions for the album began in late 2019 at the pair's studio in Sunderland, slotted between rehearsals and touring. The initial recordings pushed a looser performance aspect to the fore, inspired by some of their very first musical loves; Free, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles; old tapes and LPs pilfered from their parents' shelves. But a balance between performance and construction has always been an essential part of Field Music. By March 2020, recording had already begun for most of the album's tracks and, with touring for Making A New World winding down, Peter and David were ready to plough on and finish the record. The playfulness that's evident in much of Flat White Moon's music became a way to offset the darkness and the sadness of many of the lyrics. Much of the album is plainly about loss and grief, and also about the guilt and isolation which comes with that. Those personal upheavals are apparent on songs like Out of the Frame, where the loss of a loved one is felt more deeply because they can't be found in photographs and compounded by the suspicion that you caused their absence, or on When You Last Heard From a Linda, which details the confusion of being unable to penetrate a best friend's loneliness in the darkest of circumstances. Some songs are more impressionistic. Orion From The Streets combines Studio Ghibli, a documentary about Cary Grant and an excess of wine to become a hallucinogenic treatise on memory and guilt.. Others, such as Not When You're In Love, are more descriptive. Manchester based singer-songwriter Francis Lung releases his second album Miracle on 18 June through Memphis Industries. Recorded at the idyllic Giant Wafer studios in rural Wales in early 2020, and finished from his home studio, Miracle represents a period of introspection for Francis. Reflecting on struggles with mental health, substance (ab)use, and relationships, the record finds him facing his demons head-on, a cathartic process which largely contributed to his decision to give up alcohol. Despite its serious subject matter, Miracle is far from austere in sound, marrying the cinematic, dreamlike quality of Francis's earlier music, both solo and as a member of Wu Lyf, with the pared-back charm of great singer-songwriters like Judee Sill, Jeff Tweedy and Elliott Smith (of whom Francis is a noted fan; he co-organised an Elliot Smith online tribute concert in June 2020, a fundraiser for LGBTQ+ charities which featured Smith covers by Marika Hackman, Blaenavon, Marissa Nadler and others). A series of musical interludes act as emotional, or aesthetic bridges between songs, suspending the listener in Francis's universe for the album's duration. Inspired by the Hauntology movement, these interludes are wistful and evocative, almost eerie, complementing the reflective tone of the record.Miracle was produced by Francis in collaboration with Brendan Williams (Dutch Uncles, Matthew Halsall, Kiran Leonard) and Robin Koob (who co-arranged and performed strings), and the opportunity to take creative control was one he relished. "I'm quite bad at delegating" he admits, noting that he played every instrument except strings on Miracle. The result is a cohesive, deeply personal record, which is as vital as it is vulnerable. "I don't want to be defined by my anxiety, my depression or any history of substance abuse," Francis says, "but I do want to reach out to other people who have had similar experiences, especially if it's in a way that helps them feel a little better. Einen Schritt weiter, den entscheidenden nach vorn: "Flux Flou de la Foule" von Françoiz Breut

Es ist wie bei Alice im Wunderland. Die Heldin der Geschichte tritt einen Schritt voran und befindet sich auf einmal in einer ganz anderen Welt. Wer die letzten Alben Françoiz Breuts vor "Flux Flou de la Foule" gehört hat, wundert sich über den Vorher-Nachher-Effekt: wie ausgewechselt wirkt der Klang, wie ausgewechselt wirkt die Künstlerin. Vorher war sie die Queen des Indie-Chanson – die Lieblingssängerin der Generation Le Pop 1 - jetzt wandelt sie wie selbstverständlich im Chanson électronique. So klar und schön hat man sie noch nicht gehört. Die genaue Instrumentierung spielt kaum noch eine Rolle, jedes Arrangement ordnet sich hier ihrer Stimme unter. In der neuen Umgebung kann Breut noch besser glänzen, auch weil sie und ihre Band die idealen Melodien zu diesem Konzept gefunden haben. Das Ergebnis ist stimmig, harmonisch und ein wenig wie in einem verzauberten Universum.

Dabei hat Françoiz Breut schon innerhalb der Indie-Welt einige Metamorphosen vollzogen. Von der Chanteuse, die sich von Dominique A, Herman Düne, Calexico und Yann Tiersen Songs auf den Leib schreiben ließ, bis zur selbstständigen Künstlerin, alleinigen Text-Autorin und musikalische Mitgestalterin. Für den Vorgänger von "Flux Flou de la Foule" ("Zoo", 2016) wagte Breut zudem das Experiment, mit Adrian Utley von Portishead zu arbeiten, was aus ihrer Musik jedoch noch längst keinen TripHop machte. "Zoo" ist ein wunderbares Album, es lebt jedoch noch viel deutlicher vom Klang der Gitarre und die Präsenz ihrer Band ist hier höher, als man es vom Chanson-Genre kennt. "Flux Flou de la Foule" ist deswegen eine Zäsur, weil hier die Gitarre kaum noch eine Rolle spielt.

Das neue Album macht deutlich, dass weder Grinsekatze oder Zaubertrunk notwendig waren, um diese Metamorphose zu vollziehen, sondern dass die Künstlerin selbst die Gestalterin des Wandels ist. Sie erkannte, dass sie für einen großen Schritt vorwärts auch neue Mitstreiter brauchte und suchte sich ein neues Team. Statt einer konventionellen Gitarrenband arbeitet Françoiz Breut mit den jungen Musikern Marc Melià und Roméo Poirier an Computern und Synthesizern gemeinsam an ein einem Klangkonzept, dass von Anfang an zusammen mit den Kompositionen entwickelt wurde.

Kazakh artist Galya Bisengalieva's debut album was released by One Little Independent in September 2020 and is a concept record about the shrinking of the Aral Sea, which has been called one of the "20th century's more jaw-dropping ecological catastrophes, a consequence of the Soviet-era policy of diverting the two tributary rivers to irrigate cotton plants across Central Asia" (NY Times)Now, roughly a year later, Galya is releasing Aralkum Aralas. In Kazakh aralas means mixed/reworked. Galya has thoughtfully curated a remix album of artists to respond to her work having previously commissioned new work for her label NOMAD Music Productions. Those musicians are; Coby Sey, Jing, Moor Mother, Jlin, CHAINES and Nazira. Galya approached artists whose practice she judged would resonate with her source material and bring new light to the narrative. She was interested in getting responses from artists from such diverse backgrounds as Taiwanese, British, American and Kazakh and often approached previous collaborators for their insight into her voice.

Following the release of Netflix's inspiring documentary short 'Hold Your Breath: The Ice Dive', Galya Bisengalieva presents her official soundtrack.To accompany the gruelling journey of freediver Johanna Nordblad as she tries to break the world record for distance travelled under ice with one breath, Galya has crafted an expert ambient narration that highlights the rising intensity toward the films looming climax. She uses warped solo violin techniques and electronically manipulated strings to produce compelling and emotive compositions that induce complete submersion. Aiding in the use of the dive to make comment on both global warming and the pandemic, the soundtrack commands attention while giving the characters their own space to breathe.Galya explains; "Composing music to Joanna's story was a completely new challenge. Until now my writing has been based on more abstract concepts but now I had the opportunity to engage closely in a clearly defined journey of an individual. A story of the freediver and her attempt to break the world record (men's and women's) for distance travelled under the ice, no fins, no wetsuit, on a single breath. What Joanna achieved is truly inspiring and incredibly brave. It would have been extremely easy for me to focus on the jeopardy of her record attempt. However, the story that is being told is her love of the cold water, her sister, family, and the nature she communes with every day. My music needed to reflect the personality of an extremely determined and loving woman. In order to achieve this, I used the violin as her voice, high harmonic soaring melodies. This I juxtaposed against layers of low warped drone and nature sounds, using field recordings of underwater, cutting of the ice for the dive and the howling wind in extreme weather conditions in Finland. The music hints at danger and the power of nature but always comes back to Joanna's intimacy with the icy water."
