The limited 7" edition of Marine Eyes' latest full-length ambient record 'To Belong' hears a distilling of the original fourteen-track record down to just four selections. Though every track on the digital version of the album works in its own right, the choice on offer here - 'Hushed', 'Of The West', 'Bluest' and 'Call & Answer' - are particularly deserving of the study on wax. Something static, nigh time-crystalline is achieved on the B2, with its held root note evincing something of the quality of an infinite dream; the A1 recalls some mix of DJ Healer, Malibu or David Motion with its three note tenor-pad lilt; the A2 gets at the best of both worlds, sounding like a paradisiacal bathhouse vision set in slow motion; the B1 is the tensest, opting for a moodier key, but its reversed guitar taps and sustained choir-synth working in a no less lachrymose aesthetic.

Blacksea Não Maya’s DJ Kolt serves pure kuduro hoof and wiggle on his penultimate 12” with Lisbon’s Príncipe powerhouse.

Previously heard on jams with DJ Noronho and DJ Perigoso in 2015, DJ Kolt recently signalled his intent to retire from the kuduro game, but not until he’s dropped two final 12”s on the deadly Príncipe. ‘Verdadeciro’ features four swingeing variants toggling the pressure gauge between sub-loaded and breezy canter, galloping badness, and a lethal, UKF-style winner that’s bound for summer destruction.

Vibes steadily escalate in intensity from the pendulous, scything drums and bloozy string motif tucked into bolshy motion on ‘Fiqexpert’, to the big room-sweeping rave flares and powerful slosh of ‘vuguvuguu’, to dial in wickedly discordant bleeps and see-sawing leads with a wide-eyed UK ’91 gnash and surprisingly moody finish on ‘bateste’, then utterly finishing us off with the laser-guided hardcore pressure of ‘Shaman’, complete with diva stabs and fanfares synched to subbass in a way recalling Pinch’s post-UKF productions, but with bags of extra wiggle room.

Proper heavy, this.

"Wir lassen´s langsam gehen, es gibt ja wohl im Leben nichts das eilt!". Die Hänger ließen auf ihrer 2013 erschienenen Debut-EP schon unschwer erkennen, dass sie ihrerseits Connaiseure der Zwanglosigkeit und Verfechter des Untüchtigen sind. "Lieber garnix, statt Palaver machen!" lautet bis heute die Devise. Zehn Jahre sind bis zur Fertigstellung ihres Langspielers ins Land gezogen. Für ein Duo, das sich Die Hänger nennt, wohl der ultimative Beweis für die im „Rap Game“ so geschätzte Authentizität. Mit den Jahren wurden die Haare der Protagonisten vielleicht etwas grauer und so oft zeichnet sich das Zeitgeschehen auf diesem Planeten in fader Eintönigkeit ab, ein Grund dafür mit "Bunt" musikalisch eine üppige Farbpalette anzubieten. Ihren Wurzeln sind sich die Beiden stilistisch sicherlich treu geblieben, aber der boombap-lastige Trademark Sound hat sich mit den Jahren dennoch auf seine eigene Art und Weise weiterentwickelt. So gibt es in mehreren Songs durch eigens von Headtrick eingespielte Trompeten und Flügelhörner sogar Chorgesang zu hören. Inhaltlich kreist der Pinsel um das Alltagsgeschehen, persönliche Anekdoten, die Vergänglichkeit des Daseins und was die Beiden sonst noch so beschäftigt. In diesem Sinne: "Der Scheiss kommt bunter als ne Hippietapete!".

"die 12" erscheint als genauso stylisches wie nachhaltiges Ökovinyl, das jede Platte durch verschiedene Verläufe zu einem bunten Unikat macht."

Hiroki Ishiguro is a Tokyo-based pianist, synthesizer player, and composer born in Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, who has composed and produced numerous studio and support musicians, videos, and event music. This is the first ever analog release of his second solo album, "koh Maiton", released in 1993, while the song "Unity" was also picked up for the aforementioned "Heisei No Oto" and was highly sought after in the context of the New Age revival and beyond. Limited to 300 copies, only available at HHV! ‘Les Cigales’ takes its’ sonic cues from the structure of film and TV music from the 1960s and 70s, channelling the influence of film composers such as Francois de Roubaix and David Axelrod, whilst also sitting somewhere between the washed out, sun-soaked sonics of Surprise Chef and Robohands. As the EP unwinds, its narrative reflects a love story, full of longing, melancholy and drama, connecting with the story of Gyptis and Protis – the founding myth of Marseilles – whose love broke convention and welcomed the arrival of foreign people on French soil.

The project follows The Offline’s debut album ‘La couleur de la mer’, released in November 2023, which saw him create his own soundtrack to a film yet to be made. Inducing images of manorial, fog- swept villas at the seas edge, silhouetted sailing boats and cigar-chomping villains attempting to thwart the mission of an imaginary hero, the record is a masterfully composed sonic journey. ‘Les Cigales’ sees him continue to build upon a distinctive sound that moves from dramatic cues to fragile romanticism, incorporating psychedelic spaciness, retro soul and hip-hop sensibilities informed by his extensive record collection.

"Man alive. Galt MacDermot. You know who he is. And if you don’t, you’d better ask somebody. Most famous (probably, in certain circles anyway) as the composer and arranger of the 1969 Grammy-award winning, perennially-running-somewhere musical Hair, which had three no. 1 singles including 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In'. But his catalog is so much more than that. SO much more. He’s incomparable. He composed music for a grip of films and plays, but my favorite is his solo work. (well, with bands he’d put together, but you know what I mean). His body of work includes jazz, soul, and classical and some of it is downright Funky. He’s been sampled by Handsome Boy Modeling School, MF Doom, Run-DMC, DJ Vadim, DJ Premier, Busta Rhymes, and who knows who else. He’s worked with Bernard Purdie, Idris Mohammed, Jimmy Lewis, and countless others. Nothing I can write can do him any justice.

This record here has two different versions of one of my favorites—'Duffer' and 'Duffer in F.' Are they the same song? Yes. Are they different? Yes. Side A, 'Duffer,' is a laid-back, loosey-goosey irresistible groove with killer solos. It’s so chill, but I’ll be damned if you don’t still want to dance to it—maybe even a slowdance with your sweetie or something. It’s a whole vibe—cozy, funky, slow, intimate, yet spacious… I never want it to end. Side B, 'Duffer in F', is the same tune, but with everything tightened up. The groove, the drum kit, heck, even the room it was recorded in.

I can not for the life of me decide which one I like more, but for real though, I want them both on 7”, and thought it would be fun to do a compare/contrast record: The Duffers.

CAN WE Talk About THE Bassline ON Both Versions Though?? Whoooooo boy.

The core members of Jaubi are true masters of their craft, coming from a rich lineage of accomplished musicians. Kashif Ali Dhani is a classically trained tabla master from the Punjab gharana, and is the accompanist of choice on the local scene for some of Pakistan's great classical vocalists and instrumentalists, as well as in Europe and the USA. Zohaib Hassan Khan is a 7th generation sarangi master, who has performed globally, and is one of only 3 professional sarangi players left in Pakistan. Multi-instrumentalist, composer and Jaubi bandleader Ali Riaz Baqar aka Ila Zair began his musical journey as a hip-hop enthusiast, evolving into a jazz guitarist following the exposure to the genre’s rich sampling culture. He then became a disciple of the Senia-Shahjahanpur gharana, a lineage of musicians specialising in the sarod. His playing now focuses on merging North Indian classical music with modern jazz harmony on a traditional, unaltered 6-string electric guitar.

The collaborative relationship between the core group and wider collaborators dates back to April 2019, when 22a label founder and multi-instrumentalist Tenderlonious and EABS/Bloto keyboard and synth maestro Marek ‘Latarnik’ Pędziwiatr travelled to Lahore, Pakistan to take part in some improvised recording sessions with Jaubi. Nothing whatsoever was written down during the recording sessions – no sheet music, no song titles. It was sincere, bottled lightning. All egos were left behind, with hearts and souls being opened and poured into the music. The result has been described as spiritual jazz-fusion meets psychedelic Hindustani classical with nods to golden era hip hop.

An adventurous and absorbing record ‘A Sound Heart’ is the next chapter for Jaubi, both sonically and spiritually. The title is inspired from a verse in the Holy Qu’ran (26:89), where one comes to God with a spiritual or sound heart (Qalb) which is sincere, without doubts and free of materialistic attachments. Importantly it refers to a state where the heart is spiritually healthy and content with only God. A Sound Heart’s basis is goodness, rooted in love. In this case, it is the love for one’s creator. The album also acts as a tribute to fallen heroes, paying respect to the greatness that has come before, casting new light via cross-cultural collaboration and improvisation.

Throughout this incredible journey, meditative ragas blend with Herbie Hancock-esque motifs, joined by lament-filled contemporary melodies intertwining with the intricate sounds of the sarangi and earthy layering of the tabla. A true masterpiece of composition from start to finish.

"…I’m a big fan of Benedic Lamdin (aka Nostalgia 77)… Massively talented as a composer, arranger, songwriter, producer, and guitarist across hella genres who’s been quite prolific since he started releasing stuff in 2004. Seriously, check out his catalog- pretty sure that there’s something for everyone there, and also check out the Impossible Ark (his amazing contemporary jazz label) as well. One of my favorite projects of his is a 2010 LP called Skeletons—Smile. From the Bandcamp page of that album: 'These musicians never stood in the studio together, they just passed through my house or left some scraps of sound behind after sessions we were working on.' The project started life as material recorded for a library music company, playing into the hands of 'the current vogue for a certain style of African jazz', as Lamdin puts it, in a refreshing bout of honesty. Apparently Lamdin got so absorbed in this process of musical forgery a whole LP emerged, and if the producer wasn't so darned honest, you might never know that this wasn't the work of a genuine, and wholly exciting spiritual jazz troupe. 'Mulatu' was another dream 7 of mine. (yes, I know they all are, but)… It’s just so good; and while I own the Smile LP I just really wanted this record to exist and have it in my collection. It’s a slow burner that take cues from Mulatu Astatke but flipping them a bit and making them even groovier, funkier, and heavier. Dig it. The flip side is 'Positive Force,' an uptempo original composition perfect for backyard barbecues. I was on the fence about what to put on the flip as I like the whole album, but this track is a fan favorite and contrasts nicely with the A side in my opinion."—Devin Limited run of 500 copies.

The album imagines a young musician named Green working in a future dawning era where lost signals and enduring impulses are unearthed from the sediments of technology and time. Across twelve compositions, Green becomes the compass in an epoch of transition; one shaded with pastoral patinas and studded with the fragments of allegorical ruin. As tattered as it is tender, Atlas of Green is a patchwork of scavenged relics and bygone hues, cast through the iridescent shimmers of a mid-future in flux.Growing up on the Wirral Peninsula in North West England, Hunt was surrounded by stone age landmarks and rock carvings that infused the landscape with legend. It was beside those carvings on a residency at Bidston Artistic Research Center where he began the journey of Atlas of Green, experimenting with tape loops and exploring the center's library of sci-fi. Here Hunt also encountered the work of Italian philosopher Federico Campagna, a writer who believes we're at the end of our current world. This encouraged Hunt's exploration of how the fabric and fantasies of our current era might endure into the future of Green, as they try to make sense of the riddles of the past, utilizing broken electronics and simple acoustic instruments to create new mythic forms.This question of endurance led Hunt to inscribe Atlas of Green with its own lucid markings - sometimes almost anthemic adornments - which unfurl through the album's melancholic air as possible new metaphors for how the human spirit might persist through dark days and regain lost wisdom.
