Not since Ray Davies has a songwriter been able to craft such sharply observed vignettes in the space of a three-minute pop song like the late Adam Schlesinger. And on 2007’s Traffic and Weather, Fountains of Wayne’s fourth album, Schlesinger took his art to a new level, singing short stories as varied as crushing on a DMV clerk (“Yolanda Hayes”), celebrating the sexiness of a car not generally considered sporting (“92 Subaru”), being broke (“Strapped for Cash”), and having luggage lost by an airline (“Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim”). And while it lacks a radio-friendly hit like “Stacy’s Mom”—it should be mentioned that Chris Collingwood only contributed three songs to this record—there are still earworms aplenty, particularly on “I-95,” Collingwood’s “Seatbacks and Traytables,” and the title tune. Given that no album released during the past four decades even approaches the magnitude of Thriller, everything about it remains important. The 1982 blockbuster has sold more than 34 million copies in the U.S.; globally, it has moved upwards of 70 million units. Thriller dominated the 1984 Grammy Awards, winning a record-breaking eight trophies and sweeping every major category. It repeated the feat at the American Music Awards. Seven of its nine songs were released as singles; each charted in the Top 10. Perhaps most astonishingly, Thriller topped the Top 200 Albums chart for 37 weeks during a 59-week stretch. Fast forward 24 years, and the album was the biggest-selling catalog title of 2008.

The record's unimpeachable accolades and archival standing help provide another frame of reference. Acclaimed upon arrival, Thriller topped The Village Voice's comprehensive Pazz & Jop poll in 1983. Included in both the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry and the Grammy Hall of Fame, Thriller was ranked by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at No. 3 on its Definitive 200 Albums of All Time. Rolling Stone named it the 12th Greatest Album of All Time. Time deemed it "the greatest pop album of all time." The Independent called it "the most inspiring album of all time."

Thriller proved as influential as it did inspiring. Its unparalleled success, dazzling style, and sleek architecture changed every facet of culture and entertainment. The reverberations echoed throughout society. Thriller crossed over to mainstream channels and white audiences with a degree that no Black musician managed in decades (if ever); prompted MTV to give Black artists a widespread platform; elevated choreography and dance to higher-level artforms; shattered long-standing racial boundaries; and reconceptualized music via a genre- and color-blind blend of fleet pop, funk, disco, soul, and rock sent up with cinematic panache, oversized ambition, and dynamic energy.

Its effect on multitudes of subsequent artists cannot be overstated. Thriller opened up a new galaxy in which Prince soon strolled. It's the same universe that Usher, Maxwell, and Jamiroquai joined in the ‘90s and that contemporary headliners like Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Bruno Mars orbit today. Their style-blurring identities, R&B-rooted foundations, and interdisciplinary approaches directly link to those on Thriller. Notably, the album's first single – "The Girl Is Mine," a duet and co-write with Beatles legend Paul McCartney – captured the record's unwillingness to cater to a specific race, generation, class, or style. Eddie Van Halen – at the time, the world's premier rock guitarist – performed a similar bridge role by supplying the electrifying solo on "Beat It."

Following up last year's orchestral album opus “Overtones For The Omniverse", Mocky has been releasing a number of upbeat and uplifting instrumental tracks and now collects them as "Goosebumps Per Minute, Volume 1" on classic vinyl and digital. Putting his vocals and songwriting to the side for this project, Mocky employs harps, horns, and 70’s analogue synths to provide a funky soundtrack that spreads a little of that California sunshine in the listeners direction. Built around Mocky's signature basslines and ensemble vocal arrangements that include his son Telly and his daughter Lulu, all recorded to his vintage ampex tape machine, Mocky did away with the normal metronomic BPM calculations in modern production and instead measured his music in "gpm" (the tempo at which music transmits Goosebumps) - and on top of a multitude of summery bass, drums & strings perfection, Vicky Farewell drops a blistering Rhodes solo on "Flutter" and Carlos Niño lends a percussive hand on the sublime "Iridescence”. Todd M. Simon handles the horn duties, and Liza Wallace infuses the dance tracks with live harp which recalls the floating approach of Alice Coltrane. Titles like "Refractions", "Wavelengths" or "Conduction" are hinting at a scientific approach to creating the conditions for "Goosebumps Per Minute" - his own calculus for the timing of how and when to hit and strum the things in his studio to make it raw & funky.

The songs were also inspired by his time hanging out at the Goldline bar in LA’s Highland Park. “Throughout the pandemic it was the one place I could go and sit outside and hear incredible music as I listened to my friend DJ Phonecalls playing from the Goldline's vinyl collection. He would be dropping these uplifting funk and disco cuts - and at the end of the night I would go home to my studio and make a track and upload it to my Bandcamp and the streaming services immediately … It reminded me of my time in Tokyo's vinyl bars so "Goosebumps Per Minute" owes a lot to that inspiring culture as well“.

NOT SO SILENT NIGHT ist kein klassisches Weihnachtsalbum mit „Ave Maria“ und „Stille Nacht“, sondern eine Platte mit 12 selbst geschriebenen neuen Weihnachtsliedern.

Unter anderem die erste Single „Ring out the Bells“ euphorisch und die Vorweihnachtszeit einläutend. „Not so Silent Night“ beschreibt ein typisches Weihnachtsfest bei uns zu Hause. In „24th“singe ich für die, die nicht mehr bei uns sein können und die wir, vor allem an Weihnachten, besonders vermissen. Eigentlich eine ganz normale Sarah Connor Platte, finde ich. Nur still ist es nicht.

Denn für mich ist Weihnachten, wie auch der Titel der Platte ausdrückt, nicht nur ein besinnliches Fest, wenn ich ehrlich bin. Für eine berufstätige Mutter bedeutet Weihnachten viel mehr als nur eine besinnliche Zeit. Es ist vor allem Stress. Da schicke ich schonmal kleine Stoßgebete in den Himmel wie:

Natürlich liebe ich die Weihnachtslieder, die geschmückten Fenster und beleuchteten Straßen, den Kitsch. Dafür hasse ich den Überkonsum, die Hektik, wie schnell alles vorbei ist, und wie sich an Heiligabend alle zusammenreißen, um Reizthemen zu umschiffen.

Ich vermisse jedes Jahr an Weihnachten meine geliebte Oma ganz fürchterlich und habe ihr den Song „Santa, if you´re there“ gewidmet.

Ich liebe die aufgeregten Kinderaugen und ich liebe es, Weihnachten für sie auszurichten und hoffe, dass wir das noch ganz ganz lange so erleben können, vielleicht irgendwann mit einem weiblichen Santa, der eine andere Hautfarbe hat als ich oder auf einem futuristischen Auto statt einem Schlitten kommt.. wie in „Christmas 2066“.

Durch die Augen meiner Kinder kann ich noch immer an den Zauber glauben und wünsche mir an Heiligabend tatsächlich von ganzem Herzen Frieden für die Welt, in der sie leben.

Eines ändert sich auch an Weihnachten und auch auf Englisch nicht: ich mache Songs und Texte nah am Leben. Und als Mutter, Tochter, Schwester, Frau, ist es nun mal auch ein bisschen beten, dass alles schön wird.

Bei uns zu Hause ist Weihnachten wild, laut und lustig. Darum habe ich die Platte „Not so Silent Night“ genannt.

Ach ja, das Album ist auf Englisch, weil mir das Songtexte schreiben auf Englisch nach wie vor leichter fällt. Es geht einfach leichter von der Hand. Und ich wollte ja Leichtigkeit. Es gibt einfach mehr Wörter, die gesungen schöner klingen. Das ist aber eigentlich auch völlig egal. Ich bin mir sicher, ihr werdet mich trotzdem gut verstehen. Erscheinen wird NOT SO SILENT NIGHT am 18.11.2022!!

Japanese folk-rock legend Morio Agata stunned fans with this way-outta-left-field dispatch - a synthesizer-laden, new-wave/post-punk classic. Originally released by Osaka’s Vanity Records in 1980 and back on vinyl for the first time in nearly 40 years, this fully authorized reissue has been remastered from the original analog tapes. In tip-on sleeve, with double-sided insert.

50 years ago, Hokkaido-born singer-songwriter Morio Agata released his debut single, Sekishoku Ereji (Red Elegy), an emotive, shuffling piano ballad that (shockingly) sold half a million copies in Japan. While he would never have another Top-40 hit, Agata would spend the next half century issuing a series of idiosyncratic, experimental pop albums. Today, he’s a beloved cult figure, still actively touring and recording in his seventies.

In his first decade as a recording artist, Agata released a stream of classics right out of the gate — Otome No Roman (1972) melded American-styled folk rock with traditional Japanese melodies, Zipangu Boy (1976) was a sprawling, Haruomi Hosono-produced psychedelic opus, and Kimi No Koto Suki Nan Da (1977) saw Agata tackle slick, lightly funky AOR. While this sort of stylistic schizophrenia might sink your average artist, Agata’s singular voice and magnetic charisma elevates everything he touches, and subsumes it all into Morio Agata World — a joyous, playful and frequently unhinged world.

Arguably the biggest left-turn of Agata’s early career, however, came in 1979, when legendary experimental label Vanity Records’ Yuzuru Agi paired Agata with major players from his label’s roster and the Osaka punk scene for an impromptu recording session. An impressive list of musicians took part (sab, Yukio Fujimoto (Normal Brain), Masahiro Kitada (inu), Taiqui (Ultra Bide), Jun Shinoda (ss), Chie Mukai (Che-Shizu), and others) and even though they all came from different wings of the underground music scene, together they built an arresting, minimalistic bedrock of synthesized and acoustic sounds for Agata to work his magic over. The recording sesssions were tense and it took a while for the collective to find their footing. But the hard work paid off — Norimono Zukan is a masterpiece of ramshackle new wave and droning dirges, topped off with Agata’s unmistakeable croon, at times delicate, other times twisted. It’s a relatively short album, but a deep one, and Mesh-Key is honored to introduce it to a new generation of music fans.

A multi-talented musician, singer songwriter and record producer full of tales to tell, Leonardo Marques has released three solo records – Dia e Noite no Mesmo Céu in 2012, Curvas, Lados, Linhas Tortas, Sujas e Discretas in 2015, and Early Bird in 2018. All of Leonardo’s solo albums have been released in Japan by Disk Union and the latest one, Early Bird, has also been released worldwide on vinyl format by 180g x Disk Union.

Leonardo was the guitar player of Diesel (later called Udora), one of the main alternative rock bands in Brazil in the early 2000’s. The band was on the main line up of the Rock in Rio III Festival, playing for over 250,000 people as an opening act for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silverchair, and Deftones. Leonardo then moved to Los Angeles with the band and signed a record deal with Clive Davis (J Records / Rca) and worked with Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More), Gavin Macklop (Goo Goo Dolls, Toad the Wet Sprocket), Camus (David Byrne, Arto Lindsay), Bob Marlette (Black Sabbath, Tracy Chapman, Alicce Cooper), and 16-time Grammy Award winner Thom Russo (Michael Jackson, Audioslave, Johnny Cash, Maná). Back to Brazil a few years later, Leonardo launched his Ilha do Corvo recording studio in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The studio is equipped with vintage instruments and gear from various decades which creates a unique sonic landscape and sound signature in each record it produces.

Bourbonese Qualk's third album "The Spike" was recorded during the period 1984-1985 and published by the Berlin based Dossier/Atonal label while Bourbonese Qualk were involved in organising the Berlin Atonal festival. Parts of Side 2 of the album is a recording of pieces made for a dance and film performance at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London in 1985.

Bourbonese Qualk were an experimental music group from England, active from 1979 through 2003. They were always obsessively and uncompromisingly focused on controlling their work: they ran their own record label, recording studio, tour organization, and music venue (the notorious Ambulance Station). They refused to integrate into the commercial music racket and turned down publishing deals from major labels, stubbornly opting for total independence.

They're also known for their political activism, formed in the crucible of 1980s Britain amid such influences as the UK miners' strike, The Falklands War, Thatcherism, monetarism, local government corruption, squatting, anti-capitalism, anti-fascism, and anarchism. Their work was often ambiguous and directly critical of cynical power-politics of any color, often irritating members of the traditional organized left. In 1984 Bourbonese Qualk occupied a large empty building - The Ambulance Station - on the Old Kent Road in South London, which they turned into a base for their activities, a cooperative space for artists, musicians, and writers, and a center for radical political activism -- specifically as a coordinating center for the Stop the City anti-capitalist riots of 1984.

This is music as much for then and today, a radical, revolutionary cultural force that acts as a positive social charge.

Daniel O'Donnell's recording career has now spanned 35 years and he continues to delight fans around the world by his recording and touring activities. Daniel is the UK chart's most prolific and one of the most successful recording Artists. In 2021, he broke his own world record, by becoming the first recording artist to chart at least one new album every year in the Artist Albums Chart for 34 consecutive years. During his career, in the United Kingdom Daniel has amassed forty-seven Top 75 albums, including nineteen Top 10 albums, with seventeen of them this Century, a feat not achieved by any other recording Artist. After two albums with legendary international Producer Nigel Wright, Daniel retreated to Black Mountain Recording Studio, to work with home-grown local talent and record an album of new songs. The resulting album to be released in November is 'I WISH YOU WELL', which includes the up-tempo Bublé-esque 'Under A Spell Of Loving You' and 'Always There' written especially for Daniel by Brendan Graham and Rolf Loevland, who wrote 'You Raise Me Up'. As he looks back at his long and successful recording and touring career, for which he shows no signs of slowing down, Daniel can appreciate the pleasure that he has brought to millions of his adoring fans, his selfless philanthropy and receiving his Honorary MBE for services to the music industry and charity. With another stylish TV commercial to support the album's release, Daniel remains as relevant today, as when he charted his first album in the 1980s.
