'Eu Bebo Sim' is a samba-rock master class from Elizeth Cardoso originally released on Copacabana in 1973, as featured on her Disco de Ouro in 1974. Another find at Tony’s Hits in Sao Paulo.
She released around 40 albums during her career, most of which appeared under the name Elizete Cardoso.

Elza, Queen of Samba, is one of the most prolific, successful and well-known Brazilian artists of all time.

In 'Deixa A Nega Gingar' she delivers a top 10 Mr Bongo HQ favourite - Bossa nova underpinned with a Montuno-esque piano line, backed with percussion and horns that would rival Tito.
This 7” cut sounds particularly enormous on a sound system.

The Jolisa EP marks a significant shift in Luca dell’Orso’s sound. Although the electric hooks and rolling rhythms that characterise the dutchman’s signature style are still present, new avenues are explored. One notable change is the addition of vocals, care of the EP’s namesake: Jolisa. The opening, “Sixteen”, smoulders with a palpable intensity. Steady beats and textured pads support synth stabs as impassioned vocals recant a tale of past lessons. “Reach Out”, on the flip, is a different animal. Big and daring, chords chug next slicing snares while lyrics brim with hope. Two instrumental works balance the four tracker. “Nighttime” is perfectly sculpted with a soulful melody and clean percussion, vocoder lyrics giving a sorrowful slant to track. A true epic closes: “Tomorrow’s Already Here.” Bold keys and racing rhythms collide in this 80s steeped extravaganza, electro-disco and car chases in this incredible end. Ipek Yolu is the Turkish name for the Silk Road which connected the East and the West. This band does not deal in silk but they connect flavors, smells and sounds from different corners of the globe, connecting the world.
The band merges bass-heavy electro-tinged cumbia grooves, saz riffs and surf guitar into a multicultural melting pot of South American rhythms, Anatolian folk music and 60s psychedelic rock. A unique universe of sound that bridges the tropical jungles and the dusty deserts in a kaleidoscopic blend of music. Ipek Yolu has used 2020 to write their debut album Tropical Anatolia and are ready to hit the venues and festivals.
The members of Ipek Yolu first got together for an improvised jam session during the Aarhus Roots & Hybrid Festival in 2018. The show was set up as a special one-time-only show merging members from the bands Hudna & Junglelyd. The show ended up lasting for almost three hours. It didn’t take them long to discover they were onto something special. If you know any of these bands mentioned you know you’re in for a body-shaking party, characterised by musical curiosity and improvisation.
The three members of Ipek Yolu have all been part of the Danish music scene for several years. The band leader, Orhan Özgür Turan, is a well-known and respected saz player all over Denmark, and has made a name for himself through his efforts in the Anatolian Folk band Hudna. In 2018 he won an award as Global Roots Artist of the year at The Danish World Music Awards. Olaf Brinch and Lasse Aagaard have worked together for many years making high energy cumbia with their band Junglelyd and Afrobeat with their band African Connection. Olaf is also an integral part of the Danish band AddisAbabaBand. In addition, Olaf and Lasse have toured and recorded with great musicians such as CC Yoyo, former drummer of Fela Kuti, in both Ghana and Denmark. All of the past experiences collided to create Ipek Yolu.

For number 90 in the Brazil45 series, we share a couple of lesser-known discoveries that have become recent favourites here at Bongo HQ.

First up we head to the north of Brazil with funky Forró / boogie hybrid monster, 'Vendedor De Mangaios' by Josan. Originally released in 1981 on the album 'Rio De Renovações’ on Copacabana Records. This addictive dancefloor gem is still relatively under the radar, but it has become a firm favourite at Bristol's Worm Disco Club parties and amongst the DJ's and collectors of Brazil's underground dance music scene.

Taken from the illustrious singer Bartô Galeno's self-titled 1977 album on Tapecar Records, 'Vou Tirar Você Daqui' is an unusual one. Not easily pigeon-holed, the song sits somewhere between MPB / funk and rock, yet isn't really any of them. Backed with a big orchestrated sound and tripped-out synths, the track has a truly unique feel.

We hope you dig these finds. Another testament to the diversity and depth of Brazil's rich musical heritage.

Lloyd Altamont Thomas Robinson recorded many songs as a singer first for Studio One in 1963 and later for many labels and Jamaican producers including Duke Reid, Lloyd Daley, Sir JJ and more. Robinson was part of the duo Lloyd and Devon, whom had quite a few good songs under their belt including a hit for Derrick Morgan's Hop label, "Red Bum Ball.". With Glen Brown, under the name Lloyd & Glen, he wrote and recorded many outstanding Rocksteady & early Reggae tracks, some quite heavily influenced by black Soul including the two sublime tracks featured here. He went on to record the big dancehall hit “Cuss Cuss” in 1984 on the Harry J. label. He died in 2013 in the Kingston Public Hospital. He was 68 years old. Glenmore Lloyd Brown, began his career as a vocalist in Sonny Bradshaw’s jazz group before recording duets with Hopeton Lewis, Dave Barker, and Lloyd Robinson. Later, Brown became the founder and owner of the Reggae/Dub labels Pantomine and South East Music. A sought after producer he worked with many with many Reggae greats including U Roy, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, I-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, Johnny Clarke, Lloyd Parks, and Little Roy. The heavy rhythms of his Dub productions resulted in his being known as "The rhythm master". He died at the Far Rockaway Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in New York City on 4 October 2019, at the age of 75. As “Lloyd & Glen”, they composed, sang and recorded together about 15 tracks, ranging from Ska to Rocksteady to Soul on a variety of labels between 1966 and 1968. Most of these songs are outstanding, many are just sublime with a strong American Soul influence. In the late 50s & 60s, Jamaica was Rhythm & Blues/Soul crazy. Many Jamaican artists regularly performed and recorded tracks in these styles along with Rocksteady and Reggay. Very few though could do it as well Lloyd & Glen...

Here's a funky introduction to the two man band Duoya from Sweden. Butter is their debut release, a three tracks EP containing two songs from the upcoming album and one exclusive. As they are perfecting their debut full length album we thought to introduce the project to you with this super limited 7" vinyl to mark the day.

Duoya is the funky brainchild of Gustav Horneij and Dimitrios Karatzios. The two met through a shared obsession with jazz vinyls and later started jamming, eventually forming Organic Pulse Ensemble together. While the project in time would turn into Gustav's one man venture, their creative chemistry was still there when they decided to start sending recordings and song sketches back and forth during the spring of 2020. Which in turn was the beginning of a new musical journey.

Harboring the creativity of both artists, Dimitri being an illustrator as well as a musician and Gustav being a multi-instrumentalist and a song writer. When they get together only good things happen. Specially while jamming, they express themselves freely and come up with crazy groovy music that everyone loves to vibe on.

In expectation for the amazing upcoming album that is in the works, Butter turned out to be the perfect appetizer to get in the mood and discover this brand new project with the complicity of Urban Waves Records.

Doug Payne is a graduate of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art (also known as Fame) in Manhattan NY, and Howard University in Washington D.C. He performed as a member of the Sister Sledge tour ("We are Family") has produced several recordings for quite a few East Coast acts and worked as the Music Director for The Dreamlovers, Eddie Holman, The Coasters and the house-band for the Atlantic City television show Chat-24.

We are happy to present two of his self released singles in full on one long 12". She Is On The Money is a A+ Boogie floor filler this previously unreleased in this full version massive 15 Mins long mix direct from master tape. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Queens/ New York, betrachtet Bey sich selbst hauptsächlich als „East Coast girl“, da sie ihre prägenden Jahre als Erwachsene in der DMV-Region (Washington DC, Maryland & Virginia) verbrachte und dort kreativ tätig war. For volume 86 in the Brazil45 series, we return with a pair of stellar 1970s Brazilian-Funk / Black Rio nuggets by two of the greats of the genre, Toni Tornado & Zeca Do Trombone. 'Sou Negro' (I'm Black) is taken from Toni Tornado's (aka Antônio Viana Gomes) sought after 1970 four-track compacto EP on Odeon Records. Already having had some experience in show business as a dancer in the 1960s, Toni started his musical career in 1970 and adopted the stage name 'Toni Tornado'. The influence of James Brown flowed through his music, with Toni becoming one of the first Brazilian artists (alongside Tim Maia) to introduce the soul and funk sound into Brazilian music. Together with other contemporary musicians and bands such as Banda Black Rio, Gerson King Combo and Cassiano, this new sound led to DJ's throwing soul parties. This unique Brazilian take on soul and funk (and later on disco) became coined as 'Black Rio'. A movement that celebrated pride in its Black identity and consciousness. Zeca Do Trombone has an impressive repertoire which has seen him releasing a handful of solo albums and working with some of the greats of Brazilian music, such as Tim Maia, Ivan Lins, Joyce, and Luis Vagner. The track 'Coluna Do Meio' is taken from his 1976 collaboration project 'Zé Do Trombone E Roberto Sax' with saxophonist Roberto Sax, which additionally features the heavyweight Wilson das Neves on percussion. This catchy Wah-Wah guitar-led dancer has become a favourite with DJ's over the years and will continue to be championed for years to come.

Not many cities in the world are gifted with a timeless anthem of their own. We all know “New York, New York”, a song widely known across its city borders. For many Vietnamese, the beautiful Cha Cha Cha tune “Sài Gòn” has a similar reputation. The tune was written by Hanoi-born composer Y-Van. Like many of his generation, he moved to the South in 1954 after The Geneva Accords partitioned Vietnam temporarily into two states. There he became one of the most famous and prolifc songwriters in South Vietnamese pop music. His revered songs are still sung and covered to this day. “Sài Gòn”, which he wrote in 1965, was recorded for the frst time by Saigonese-born singer Trúc Mai for the Sóng Nhạc label. It is one of his most iconic compositions and has been recorded countless times since. Trúc Mai rose to prominence during the late 1950s as a popular headliner in the cabaret circuit of Saigon, earning her the title, "Nữ Hoàng Mambo" (the Queen of the Mambo). Her reputation helped make the 1965 recording of “Sai Gon” an instant hit. It was so successful that it was one of only a few songs to appear on multiple 7” vinyl releases. However, that same year, Trúc Mai took a seven-year hiatus from the music industry to take care of her family. But she returned in 1972 to record “Sai Gon” again, this time with another producer, Duy Khánh – also a successful singer and musician. They released this track on his “reel 2 reel” tape series, “Cỏ May”. After the war ended in 1975, Trúc Mai and her family left Vietnam to begin their new lives in the United States, where she continued her successful music career with the overseas community.The Sài Gòn sung about in the song refers geographically to today's Districts 1 & 3 in Ho Chi Minh City, the name given in 1975, after reunifcation. But colloquially, the city is still afectionately called Sài Gòn by many of its residents, and even the airport retains the ‘sgn’ designation as its abbreviation. Despite being recorded over 55 years ago, the unbroken popularity of this life-afrming ode to the city is proven when, whether in Sài Gòn or Hanoi; the south or north; whether young or old, when the song plays, everyone immediately joins in to sing along to the chorus…Saigon đẹp lắm Saigon ơi! Saigon ơi! (Saigon is so beautiful! Saigon oi! Saigon oi!) The two extensively restored mixes are supplemented with a 2021 edit by Saigon Supersound producer and DJ Jan Hagenkötter, who tries to preserve the vibes of the original and at the same time to wrap it in a contemporary garment.

In the mid 1960s Eddie Buster got involved in recordings for the local Chicago-based M&M label which was run by saxophonist Tommy "Madman" Jones. M&M released dozens of 45rpm singles, one of those being "Churn The Butter" b/w "Kitchen Cookin'" by the Eddie Buster Band with vocalist Jr. Robinson. It is quite difficult to find the original 45rpm single in clean condition so this fantastic sounding reissue is certainly worth it to purchase.

Neno Exporta Som’s super-rare compacto 'Deixa A Tristeza’ from 1971, has been high on the want-lists of Brazilian record collectors and DJs for years. This was intensified, along with a wider cult-following, following Floating Points dropping the gem on his amazing 'BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix’ back in 2015. Mr Bongo included 'Deixa A Tristeza’ on our Record Club Vol 1 compilation. Following that came many requests to release it back on its original ‘compacto’ 7” format. So finally, here it is for all to enjoy.
By sheer coincidence, also released in 1971 on Copacabana Records is Agnaldo Rayol's ‘Sumaúma’. A fairly un-known record which has the potential to become an underground classic. This epic track has a psyche break-beat drum and bass groove intro - just asking to be sampled! Along with lush string and horn arrangements and a soaring female/male vocal duet. This beauty has been a firm favourite in the Bongo office since we came across it and hopefully you dig it as much as we do.

Australian Soul Jazz holy grail from 1968! Limited to 300 copies w/wide. Debut release on Pacific Theatre Encore, the reissue label started by Melbourne's contemporary funk / soul lynchpin Australian Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos, Menagerie, Lanu, ex Cookin' On 3 Burners). Two high energy Mod burners, both originals taken from the forthcoming album 'Whatever It's Worth'.
Lead by Australia's own rival to Jimmy Smith and Jimmy Witherspoon, the '68 line up of Col Nolan & The Soul Syndicate would prove to be an Australian jazz super-group, consisting of John Sangster on drums / percussion (whose own late '60s Festival albums are highly collectable), John Allan on bass, Col Loughnan on sax and Jimmy Doyle on guitar (the latter two were also in mid Oz '70s jazz-rock giants, Ayers Rock).
"Pacific Theatre Encore will be reissuing music from across the globe, but it was important to me for the first release to shine a light on the important legacy of our own scene" says Ferguson, who meticulously restored the audio himself, which was then remastered.

Ahemaa Nwomkro, which means queens of Nwomkro, are Victoria Osei and Theresa Owusuaa. Nwomkro is an old Ashanti musical style, which played an influencial role in the origin of the typical more roots-like Highlife style of Kumasi, the cultural capital of Ghana in the middle of the jungle.

Lokalophon is the newly established sub-label of Philophon, which is designed to release local specialities from potentially all around the world. The first 7" is by Ghanaian Frafra-Gospel singer Chris De Wise Shepherd.

Born in Bolgatanga, he moved as a young man from the rural north of Ghana to its coastal capital Accra. Consequentially, his style became more urban. That you can clearly hear on his 2012 release Nera Wo'o Soke, which sounds in some ways as if Grandmaster Flash himself were operating the production knobs. Atune Anya'alima on the other hand is pure Frafra-Gospel as it is usually performed in Northern Ghana.

Harp and synth flourishes pepper the arrangement and the uber-catchy chorus makes this one a staple in their live set.The B side, "Broom" is a musing on the nature of seeing one's true love for the first time. Holy Hive have taken this tried and true subject and infused it with their signature soul-folk sound to create this gem of a b-side. Paul Spring's honesty shines through as he sings with his beautiful falsetto about his real life love at first-sight experience. Joe Harrison brings the tasteful bass and supporting guitar accents while Homer Steinweiss lays down one of his signature grooves. During the heyday of the Northern Soul scene the All-Nighter was the preferred format for the travelling soul fan. It separated the scene's top venues from the hundreds of regional soul nights in pubs, clubs and community halls across the land. The All-Nighter was the ultimate experience and the only place to hear the best, the rarest and the breaking sounds spun by the leading DJs. It was born in Manchester's Twisted Wheel in September 1963, found its feet (its dancing feet) at the Golden Torch in Stoke-on-Trent from 1970-72, and truly came of age at the Wigan Casino Soul Club from '73 onwards establishing itself as the premier National and even International event of the 70's. Willie Harper's originally unreleased recording of the Toussaint dance classic "Here Comes the Hurt Again", a feature track on the All-Nighter compilation (CHARLYL308), is put into direct competition with its B-side recording from Lee Dorsey of the same track on this new 7" on Club Soul. Both recordings have recently been remastered for a sound that will take Soul revellers back to the heat of '60s dancefloors as though it were yesterday. Presented on dinked vinyl in single sleeve packaging.

Gianni Marchetti is one of Italy's best kept secrets. A composer with a long and elaborate list of writing credits in both pop music and movie soundtracks. He penned proper anthems in Italy's post-war melodic tradition. Different Shades Of Brown originated from Spingfield, Ohio in 1968 before being talent spotted by renowned Detroit producer Clay McMurray in 1971, who in turn secured a recording contract with Motown for them. With Clay as their producer they released two singles on the label which are highly regarded by soul music lovers across the world. An album was also recorded for Motown but it has never been released so far. When the group were released from their contract Clay continued recording them.

In the 1950s and 60s, the Cincinnati recording scene was dominated by Syd Nathan’s King label, whose R&B catalogue made it a major player among post-war independents. In its shadow was Fraternity, a smaller concern launched by Harry Carlson in 1954.

The well-respected Carlson set about building an artist roster which reflected his conservative musical taste, scoring smash hits by Cathy Carr and Jimmy Dorsey a couple of years later which established the label as an indie to be reckoned with.

Here, though, we spotlight decidedly non-MOR Fraternity recordings by influential guitar hero Lonnie Mack, soulful girl group the Charmaines, bluesy singer-guitarist Albert Washington, and female duo the 2 Of Clubs.

For those with appetites whetted by this old-fangled 7-inch vinyl sampler, further Fraternity recordings by each of these artists can be found elsewhere in the Ace Records catalogue. For now, though, here’s your chance to enjoy four fine examples of the sound of mid-60s Cincinnati.

This recording happend during a cultural exchange programm organized by Galerie Listros, Berlin's finest gallery for Ethopian art, with support from the Bundeskulturstiftung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
The flip side is the complimentary portrait to the recently released Portrait of Alemayehu (Daytime) - now, on Portrait of Alemayehu (Night-time), you get an idea of the masters fiery stage persona as it is documentated on the A-side. It's night-time now - booooooom!

Cherry Drops Is A Collection Of Tracks Written By Call Super. It Was Started Around The Time They Were Working On A Larger Project Called Tell Me I Didn't Choose This, That Reflected On A Period In Their Life Of Upheaval, Trauma And Self-Discovery. That Project Is Bound Up In A Series Of Compositions For A Self-Made Instrument Called An Epi-Harp, Clarinet, Piano And Percussion And A Collection Of Paintings, Two Of Which Feature On The Covers Of The Two Releases That Make Up Cherry Drops. However The Music On Cherry Drops Became A Release From That Project, A Distraction From Painful Reflections And Recollections. It Had To Be Music With A Direct Dancefloor Connection Because It Was In Those Spaces Where Call Super Found Release Through Those Pivotal Periods In Their Life.
