With his beats, he tries to drown the listener in an ocean of cosmic sounds. The axis of its production is the artistic achievements of producers such as flying lotus, monte booker and j dilla. In his songs, he does not limit himself to one style, his beats are often a patchwork of various genres of music. When the barman asks, “What’s your poison?” he’s not exaggerating. “What’s your cure?” I asked. “You’re well-preserved,” he observed. “You tell me.” “Can I use this space during the day for a chess camp?” I asked him. Little Richard finished playing. “Great idea,” the barman said.

Wait, am I the jukebox? Lou Reed said he was receiving songs like a radio at all times. “Black Light, Black Heat” greeted our first chess meet. “Turn it down so the kids can concentrate,” demanded my kids’ teammates’ square parents. The jukebox reduced its rock to a whisper, revealing my snores.

If this was the last verse I ever wrote, I would want it to be of use like a leather coat or measured rope.

Jason Grimez is a Cincinnati-based DJ and producer. He has a long history of record collecting, sampling, and creating new sounds with analog gear. Grimez works with some of Cincinnati's finest studio musicians to create raw, soulful, instrumental hip-hop under the moniker Doctor Bionic. The next LP, In The Infinite, is due out 12/01/2023 via Chiefdom Records.Grimez fell in love with music during the golden era of early 90's east coast hip hop - when digging for jazz and funky samples were the backbone of beats. He became comfortable scratching on a pair of 1200s and sampling records with an MPC 3000 in high school. After years of collecting music and working on his sound behind the scenes, he has compiled a huge discography of original songs.In 2015, Grimez started his independent label Chiefdom Records. His studio persona Doctor Bionic was one of the first to see a release on the new imprint. The project features a studio band of session musicians. Grimez is responsible for writing, recording, producing, mixing, and releasing the records. He gathers a group of musicians in his studio, presents a few ideas, and hits record.Due to a rotating cast of musicians and ever-changing inspirations, no two sessions are alike. "There's no set pattern," Grimez explained. "I'll invite some session players and have them jam on a few ideas. Sometimes we'll start with a drum break and add melodies over top. The genesis of the project was in Manchester, where the legendary Band On The Wall venue asked him to host an artistic residency. It was the early 2000's in Jacksonville, FL. Pre-social media, the Myspace Era. The acclaimed indie rap quartet, Asamov had recently put Duval County's underground Hiphop scene on the map, and their triple-threat frontman, Therapy aka Paten Locke was searching for some new inspiration. Paten would find the spark he was looking for in the newly minted couple making 'Heavenly Noise' in Jacksonville nightclubs - Batsauce and his wife, Lady Daisey. With Batsauce on the beats and Lady Daisey providing vocal harmonies (and graphics for the group), Paten found himself surrounded by a new creative energy that allowed him to relinquish the reigns on the production side and focus on his pen-game. Thus, The Smile Rays were born and they immediately started shinin'. Their soundscapes were rooted in funk, jazz and soul - sticking to a similar formula of eras past but adding twists and turns to make it their own. Their lyrics & song concepts were uplifting and hopeful. Their chemistry on stage was undeniable. With their electric live show and eclectic makeup, the trio took Jacksonville by storm and the world took notice. Paten's experience with Asamov opened doors for the group and soon they had their first deal on the table - a 12" single with Germany's Jakarta Records for their beloved anthem for the babies, 'A Toast'. On the heels of their initial 12", they were enlisted for the 'Rawkus 50' and released their first EP. Soon to follow, Japanese label 'Subcontact' offered to release another 12" plus their debut full-length album. That release became Party...Place. and it was released in 2007 in Japan only, on CD. Now for the 1st time ever, the debut album from The Smile Rays is available on all DSPs + limited vinyl pressing. Cedar Hill is made up of rapper Nish and beatmaker Lancecape, from Ontario, Canada. The pair met at the age of 11 while playing hockey for Cedar Hill House League, which gave birth to the group’s name. Both were huge fans of hip-hop music, and started writing rhymes and creating pause tapes from college radio shows like Power Move and Masterplan. Shortly after that, they joined forces with Korry Deez and Black Cat of IRS (“Instinctive Reaction to Struggle”) to form the Horde Crew and then combined with a North Scarborough Crew - the Lyrical Coalition - to form a super crew of MCs, DJs and beatmakers called “The Monolith”. In 2000, Nish ventured off into a solo venture, appearing on DJ Serious’s album “Dim Sum” for the lead single and video, “Enlightening”, released by Sound King Records and distributed by Fat Beats. The success of the single led to a Canada-wide tour and garnered a Juno nomination for Rap Recording of the Year. Nish continued working with DJ Serious and appeared again on his follow-up album, “Cold Tea” on Audio Research Records. For a second time Nish landed the A-Side single titled “Frost Bite” and the B-Side consisting of the unreleased remix of “Enlightening”. Powered by Fat Beats, this helped cement Nish’s name as one of Canada’s finest MCs and shine light on Canadian hip-hop globally. In 2006, Lancecape received his first major placement producing “What Up”, the first single for J Dilla affiliates Frank N Dank’s album “Xtendedplay Version 3.13”. This led to further production for some of the biggest names in hip hop, including Keith Murray and Canibus as well as features on his beats from A.G (ditc) and Rapper Big Pooh (Little Brother). Lancecape also remained a key “battle” beatmaker twice coming second in the Redbull Big Tune Beat Battles which led to vinyl released by DJ House Shoe on his label, Street Corner Music. Most recently, Lancecape became 2x champion in Ski Beats Smackpack Battles. During this time, Nish and Lance continued recording music and, in 2018, they decided to join forces and become an official group, Cedar Hill. Their music has since been picked up by some of the biggest DJs Stateside, including their single “Strains”, which was played by DJ Premier on his acclaimed Sirius XM radio show “Live From Headquarterz”. Since then, DJ Premier has played every single released by Cedar Hill and has even promoted and featured their music a number of times on his Instagram page. In early 2022, Lancecape was approached via Instagram by Nij aka Nijmakesbeats of Spread Butter - a brand that had started out in streetwear apparel - who was interested in joining forces to release a Cedar Hill EP via a new label, Spread Butter Records. The Cedar Hill EP would be the first release of the label. Building from that point, we now have the EP offering from Cedar Hill, “Variety”. The EP consists of 4 previously released songs and 2 unreleased vinyl-only tracks, together with the accompanying instrumentals on the B-side. This release is for any boom bap head or hip-hop lover of lyrics, beats and cuts. This record is a tribute to the music that Cedar Hill was raised on and continues in the vein of classic boom-bap hip hop of the 90s Golden Era.

As one of hip hop’s premier auteurs, Danny Brown has been no stranger to conscious themes and current affairs; much of his discography features blisteringly honest verses set to explosive productions. But on his sixth album Quaranta, Danny Brown shows a new side: with his forlorn face half obscured by the shadows of his past, he delivers a raw, autobiographical clarity that we haven’t seen before.

Part of this comes with age. “Quaranta” means “forty” in Italian, marking pivotal moments and epiphanies in the years since his breakout record XXX. It’s also where the word “quarantine” originates, not only referring to the decade defining lockdowns the album was written in, but to a deep sense of isolation and self reflection that colours Danny’s storytelling. As the album’s very first line says, “This rap shit done saved my life and fucked it up at the same time”: there’s no begging for pity here, rather Danny is telling all, with ‘Maggot Brain’-esque shreds framing his bare, wisened voice.

In that way, Quaranta becomes a case study of the rapper, reckoning with the realities of his dream career. ‘Y.B.P.’ is as much an admonishment of destitute living situations as it is a celebration of Detroit’s ingenuity, leading into an abstract thesis on gentrification in ‘Jenn’s Terrific Vacation’, where musical structures are knocked down and rebuilt just as quickly as the architectural ones are, while freezing tones depict stagnation in the midst of immense change.

Philly's first supergroup returns with a new LPThey released four albums. Their joint debut LP with The Krown Rulers from Camden, New Jersey included production by the Ultramagnetic MCs' Kool Keith and Ced Gee, with a style that was bass-heavy with the Roland TR-808 drum machine and E-mu SP-12 sampler, raw "street" lyrics and aggressive scratch DJing. Plus One is the brand-new album from Brooklyn-based artist Lindsay Powell aka Fielded. While Fielded has put out several solo projects steeped in their trademark psychedelic R&B, they also has quietly built a reputation as a genre-bending vocalist and sought-after musical collaborator. Plus One turns that dynamic on its head, bringing together an indie music elite on Fielded’s guest list including Armand Hammer, Felicia Douglass, Kenny Segal, They Hate Change, DJ Haram, Wolf Weston, The Lasso, Child Actor and Steel Tipped Dove.

“I’ve offered myself in blips and breaths and moments, sighing under a powerful lyric, or punctuating another vocalist’s breakthrough performance,” Fielded says. “We wanted to see what could happen when I brought those same artists in to add flourishes to my visions and depth to my stories.”

Plus One is executive produced by billy woods, building on a creative partnership that goes back to the rapper’s 2019 album, Terror Management. Since then Fielded has engineered, produced and performed on a slew of Backwoodz Studioz releases, in addition to putting out two projects on the label- 2020’s Demisexual Lovelace and 2021’s Young Medusa- in addition to their extensive outside commitments. That history is reflected in the breadth of Plus One’s collaborations; Fielded stole the show on Small Bills “Safehouse,” the first song on ELUCID and The Lasso’s 2019 album Don’t Play It Straight. Here they reunite, cooking up a slinky R&B banger with “Waves.” Wolf Weston and Fielded traded harmonies on Saint Mela’s 2020 EP all for this strange baptism, and Weston returns the favor to fantastic effect on “Goddess Woes.” In 2019, Fielded joined forces with Fat Tony and Steel Tipped Dove for the Houston rapper’s Don’t Move EP. On Plus One, both artists step into her world and find their footing effortlessly—Tony on the woozy numbness of “Where I Came From,” and Dove with a stumbling cascade of drum and piano on “World’s Away.” Yet, it’s some of the newest pairings that yield the ripest fruit. Kenny Segal and Fielded combine for two album highlights, and A. Billi Free pops up for the record’s biggest curveball (unless you give that to Florida rappers They Hate Change setting fire to an ELUCID beat). Through it all, Fielded holds court, always taking or leaving exactly what the song requires.

“It is an album telling full stories, walking through valleys and cities, landscapes rich and sometimes heartbreaking,” Fielded explains. ”No one is filler. Everyone has been welcomed and valued. Everyone made the work weird, wonderful and honest, and for that I am grateful.”

The title of the most recent Atmosphere album, May 2023's So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously, evokes the multiversal storytelling that's recently vaulted into the mainstream consciousness. With their latest effort, the irrepressible Talk Talk EP, the Minneapolis legends dart across threads of space-time to grab hold of the one where Slug and Ant became titans of the electro-rap that was foundational to their youths. The genesis of the Talk Talk EP was the session for a song of the same name that appeared on So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously. A collaboration with Lifter Puller alum Bat Flower, the song "Talk Talk" exists alongside electro classics in an uncanny valley that's been warped into a sweaty nightclub, at once vaguely alien and deeply human. Enamored with the song's outcome, Slug and Ant returned for a longer exploration of the sound, to mesmeric results. The pulsing "Rotary Telephone," where the TV antennas seem tuned to a world just slightly askew from ours, thrives on the tension between Slug's careening vocals and the song's taught structure_form matched perfectly with content. And on "Hear Hear," the struggle to make human connections is revealed as a beautiful one. For all its well-documented roots in disco and R&B, rap's connection to the electronic music of the 1970s and `80s is a core part of its DNA. The Talk Talk EP is one of the clearest articulations of this truth to emerge in many years, a testament to the communal power of programmed sound. For proof, look no further than "Traveling Forever," the haunting missive that closes out the record. Images flash: of police knees on necks, of prying cameraphones, another empty hotel room indistinguishable from the last. "I never got to learn how to dance for you," Slug raps, pointedly. "I don't know whether or not that's an attribute." A chill runs down your spine but the skull at its top keeps nodding.

Back in 2008, just two years after James Yancey aka J Dilla’s passing, Mike Ross, founder of Delicious Vinyl, presented J Dilla’s mother Maureen Yancey (aka Ma Dukes), with a vault of unreleased beats from her late son. Following Dilla’s childhood friend (and longtime collaborator) Frank Nitty (Of Frank N’ Dank) was a part of a group of confidants, who lovingly went through the treasure chest of music, formulating a tribute to their departed friend the best way they knew how. With hundreds upon hundreds of instrumentals to choose from, Nitty and Dilla’s brother Illa J narrowed the pile down to a collection of about 50 tracks, some of which would become the building blocks of their debut 2013 Yancey Boys album, ‘Sunset Blvd’. Upon its release in 2013, the LP (which featured appearances from Hip-Hop royalty including Common, Talib Kweli, Posdnuos, T-3 & Guilty Simpson) became an instant classic, gaining recognition from tastemakers across the world.

Even without J Dilla’s presence during the record’s creation, Frank & Illa J were able to harness Dilla’s omniscient creative energy during the production process of making Sunset Blvd. His contributions and spirit couldn't help but permeate the beats, the undeniable foundation for the tracks on the record. “Beyond the beats, his fingerprints were all over the record, in the guest artists we chose to ask for a feature, to the guys mixing and mastering. Most of whom he (J Dilla) worked with before he passed”, said Frank.

Two tracks from the album have now been remixed to celebrate the one year anniversary of the album: 15 Minutes gets reworked by Daisuke Tanabe and Dance In The Dark by Anja Ngozi.

Confucius MC has been embedded in UK hip hop since the early 2000s. He was the support of choice for Mos Def, and recently toured with UK hip hop stalwart Jehst.

Kwake Bass is musical director for Sampha and Kae Tempest. Behind the kit he has become the player of choice for travelling US heavyweights, playing with MF Doom, The Roots and Joey Bada$$, as well as UK major players Lianne La Havas and Mica Levi.

The performers featured here are Jas Kayser who has performed with Alfa Mist, Nubya Garcia and Jorja Smith among others, Alexander Hawkins of the Convergence Quartet and Decoy, Daisy George, and Ross Harris of Speakers Corner Quartet.

The features on the album are incredible too, and highlight the eclectic nature of Native Rebel. We have billy Woods on album opener “Apothecary", TS Elliot prize winning poet Anthony Joseph on "By Now", Confucius MC of Speaker's Corner Quartet and Con & Kwake on "Flowers In The Dark", Elucid on "Show Me", ganavya on "Increase Awareness", and Siyabonga Mthembu of The Brother Moves On and Shabaka and The Ancestors on “Aim".
