Junger Punk steht breit lächelnd in kahler Raumecke vor zerschlissener Tonbandmaschine; kurzgeschorene, blondierte Haare, schnittige Sonnenbrille mit dünnen Metallbügeln, angejahrte Lederjacke über buntem Flanellhemd; Trainspotting-Ästhetik. Beschriebenes Foto ist gewiss kein typisches Albumcover-Motiv - und doch ziert es das Cover vom neuen, achten Studioalbum der Husumer, Hamburger, Berliner Band Turbostaat. Der Mann im Zentrum des angegilbten Schnappschusses? Turbostaat-Stammproduzent und Toningenieur Moses Schneider in seinen späten Zwanzigern; oder in seinen frühen Dreißigern - jedenfalls in einem Lebensabschnitt vor Kamillentee und Hochglanz-Equipment. Dreck, Wut, Tatendrang, Aufbruchsstimmung, rotziger Pessimismus, unverhohlen grantiger Punk-Geist - das sind die Parallelen zwischen jenem Foto und der Platte, die es bebildert. Sie hört mit Fug und Recht auf den Namen 'Alter Zorn', klingt mehr nach Stunde null als nach Spätwerk-LP und probt - anstatt friedfertig zu umarmen - den unsanft aufrüttelnden Würgegriff.

Okay, geschenkt: Friedfertig umarmt haben Turbostaat ihre Hörer*innen auf musikalischer Ebene Zeit ihres Bestehens ohnehin nie. Da war immer mehr Understatement und nordfriesische Nüchternheit als Charmeoffensive oder Frohmut, immer mehr Sehnsucht als Wohlbehagen, immer mehr Krach, wirre Worte und bärbeißige Mine zum bösen Spiel als gut gelaunter Humbug. Turbostaat-Musik, das ist Punkrock, dem Wattenmeer-Nebel in den Lungen hängt - seitdem sich die Band 1999 in der schleswig-holsteinischen Provinz formiert hat und auch ein Vierteljahrhundert später.

Wo sonst Möwen, Wattenmeer-Nebel und graue Weiten waren, verdecken nun Taubenschwärme, endzeitlich versmogte Betonburgen und eine gottverdammte Bismarck-Statue, die dem Szeneviertel ihren metergroßen Arsch entgegenstreckt, die Sicht auf alles Schöne. 'Alter Zorn' blickt auf die »Affenstraße«, auf verwahrloste Eckkneipen, in der sich düstere Schatten stapeln, auf »Ruinen zwischen Glas und Stahl«, auf Metropolen voll »greller Sommerkotze« und Spiegelscherben, die immer enger werden - und nur selten starr auf’s offene Meer. Was den schwammigen Protagonist*innen des Turbostaat-Universums dennoch geblieben ist, ist die bohrende Einsamkeit - dieses wütend-resignierte Gefühl, es nicht zustandezubringen, »hier mitzumarschieren«. 'Alter Zorn' zeichnet eine Dystopie - eine Welt zwischen Novembergicht und Hitzestau, in der sich tote Schwäne im Graben stapeln, Panzer rollen, die Luft knapp wird, Obdachlose die Straße umarmen, alle alles mit Karte bezahlen, in Ledersitzen zittern, die Laune im Arsch und überhaupt »wirklich Sense« ist.

On the eve of the party, the first showers break out. It's fusion. At the heart of the dancefloor, water turns to smoke - evaporation. Then, as dawn breaks, it liquefies. Early in the morning, just before the first rays of sunshine, on a club outing or a hike, dew condenses and settles on flowers and people. It's a concentrated broth of warm bodies after dancing. Will we continue to get drunk? Or will we dream horizontally? Either way, it's a pivotal moment, a beginning, made of the salty tears of joy from the night before, and recipes for wild, early-morning cocktails. This EP was born from the track Se-ul, a meeting between Turfu and Yolande Bashing, an emerging artist on the Lille electro-pop scene. Although the two groups might seem to be placed in rather different boxes, they discovered they had much in common, such as three-digit chords, melancholy synthesizers and bus-shelter parties. From this sultry collaboration came a video (directed by Sihem Kerkeni) and new tracks such as "Maison", an ode to the poetry of kick, and "Tendresse", an urgent need to navigate at 150bmp. Since its creation in Portugal 6 years ago, Turfu has been plying the roads of France and beyond. Surveys prove it: the audience is so varied that it includes seasoned teuffeurs, SVT teachers, enfants terribles and certified night owls. Eternal union between boxes

2022 sees Turin Brakes release their ninth studio album - Wide-Eyed Nowhere. Of Wide-Eyed Nowhere the band say 'We surprised ourselves with what came out; a sweeter, groovier set of songs in no hurry to be anything but themselves. The South London 4-Piece comprising Olly Knights, Gale Paridjanian, Rob Allum and Eddie Myer recorded this new set of songs at Twin Palms - Olly's garden studio - over the summer of 2021, choosing to let time infuse into the music and mature in a way it couldn't in a pressurised commercial studio setting. 'Friends would visit, kids would add a voice or two, bees would buzz and we'd get to sit in the South London sun while the music poured out of the speakers and floated across the lawn. We live in places and they live in us. Sometimes we’re in the same place, linked together by the elements and our immediate surroundings. Other times, we push off into farther flung spaces, but stay connected as though telepathically, treasuring the closeness that once was and will someday be again. Most of the humble music that comprises ‘Canoga to Haʻikū’ was recorded in a single sitting by Carlos and Jesse in Carlos’ studio in California. A little later, Jesse departed for Maui, where an acquaintance named Russ kindly lent him a Casio Cz-1000 for the summer. With that instrument and the surrounding sounds of children, birds, insects, lizards, frogs, goats, wind and rain, the finishing touches were added to these songs. The ocean a glimmer in the distance through the palms, a portal was opened across the Pacific to Carlos’ studio, where friendship dances in all its forms. A rainbow beckoned and invited everyone to dive into the water and share in its universal embrace.

A new record from Turnover arrives this fall. Myself in the Way is the band's fifth full-length album, and it follows their first pause in consistent touring in almost 10 years. While the world was shut down, Turnover's four bandmates spent time meditating, painting, volunteer firefighting, skateboarding, and working in state parks - deepening interests and growing roots in places they hadn't been able to while living life on the road for so long. Over 18 months, these individual experiences acted as the soil in which Myself in the Way grew into Turnover's next album. Returning to Pennsylvania to track with longtime friend and producer Will Yip, vocalist & guitarist Austin Getz cites Quincy Jones, Chic, and Dark Side of the Moon as influences in the way that songs like the infectiously-rhythmic "Ain't Love Heavy" and the trippy, disorienting "Tears of Change" feel wider, deeper and more whole than anything in the band's catalog to date. Drummer Casey Getz' new skills behind the drum set that open up songs on Myself in the Way to more improvisation and fluidity, pairing well with bassist Dan Dempsey's infectious bass-lines and Nick Rayfield's sharpened guitar and piano playing. On Myself in the Way, Turnover's creative vision takes center- stage in every way. The album's cover art - a sparkling array of multicolored gems scattered across a neutral canvas - was painted during lockdown by Dempsey. Music videos for the record were directed and filmed by the band, including the dizzy "Wait Too Long" video shot on retreat in upstate New York with friends and collaborators Kyle Lamb and Blair Kemp. Austin's increased involvement on the production side earned him his first-ever co-producer credit, and Nick Rayfield contributed a new perspective as a songwriter for the first time in the recording process. For a band that has never stopped evolving, Turnover has always remained authentic with every release. Myself in the Way is an achievement that ties new and exciting ideas in with the band's unique artistic ambition.
