Nitai Hershkovits is a pianist and composer based in NY. Mostly known from collaborating with renowned bassist Avishai Cohen in the studio and on tour. Combining the classical and Jazz worlds with singer-songwriting elements, Nita's compositions and playing are simple with a twist of complexity. Quickly gaining recognition from critics around the world, Nitai was hailed as 'a genuine prodigy' by The New York Times and 'a remarkable pianist ,reminiscent of a swinger such as the late Hank Jones" by The Guardian. Nitai's debut album I Asked You A Question (Raw Tapes) was released in February 2016. The album, co-produced by Rejoicer (loops and synths) featuring Nitai on vocals, Piano and synths. LA based singer and Stones Throw Records artist Georgia Anne Muldrow and acclaimed guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel joins Nitai on two of the tracks. Exploring the realm of analog electronics, samples and beats, I Asked You A Question is an eclectic, empirical yet genuine attempt of blending improvised ideas and through-composed music. The album is played regularly on Radio Nova, TSF Jazz and on Los Angeles' KCRW radio as well as on many playlists in Germany, UK, Japan to name a few; French 'Jazz Magazine' refers to it as "Revelation", while UK Vibes describes it as "a wonderfully thoughtful collection of tunes that is refreshingly different to much else on offer". “Produzione”, originally released in 1973 on Piero Umiliani’s LP “Problemi d’oggi”, is an amazing mix of acoustic percussion and electronic experimentation, considered by some as the first example of techno / trance music ever recorded. This song, along with “Attività”, another excerpt from “Problemi d’oggi”, has been ‘reworked’ by Gerardo Frisina, who cleverly extends the original content by mixing it with contemporary electronic sensations. The result, packaged in an artwork inspired by the original 1973 release, are two tracks in which the ’70s avant-garde and today’s music blend with surprising ease.

Improvisation and composition lose their meaning, as Masami’s work goes beyond and finds its meaning in accidents, disruptions and experimentation. His music gives freedom to the listener and to a certain extent, invites to meditation. Whenever I think of Merzbow’s catalogue, I see it as this complex collage of singular moments across time when he got influenced by a particular object or person or idea, and transposed those into noise. And Torus EP is that particular instance, the encounter between Japan and Serbia, between Masami Akita and Jezgro, with the result being 4 sinister and unsettling tracks, visceral and at the same time heart-rending.

Field recordings and samples — choral chants in church, du‘a’ from a mosque, small girls singing in the street — are layered with a piano prepared by placing various metals on the strings, and played by plucking or striking, often in the traditional rhythms of darbuka and davul.
"The A-Side is more classical in its form," says Bestie, "but the ideas are more unnoticeable. It's more technical, with a lot of small details and samples. The B-Side on the other hand is more obvious in ideas but the form is obscure, with my approach just to play on the gear and make something impulsive, and analyze after."

Producer Darren Cunningham aka Actress, joined by the London Contemporary Orchestra, premiere new material as well as expanded arrangements of their dark and brooding electronica. Over a decade of releases Cunningham has built a reputation as a fine creator of cerebral abstract techno, or R&B concrète, crafting pulsing kickdrums, jittering percussion and chopped sample loops into churning, rumbling tracks soaked in static. But he has also been on record saying he wants to make ‘classical stuff for a modern generation’.

In this new collaboration, commissioned and curated by Boiler Room and the London Contemporary Orchestra with support from Arts Council England, the London Contemporary Orchestra bring a new dimension to Cunningham’s choice of sounds. With the producer in effect using them as a new instrument, matching his electronic loops with precise manipulation of their acoustic instruments, together they form a heightened kind of chamber music.

"I’ve never met Rod Modell (Deepchord) in person, but we have met through music. He found an obscure cassette of Chi music (from ’86), sent it to Astral Industries and paved the way for the release (30 years later) of ‘The Original Recordings’ in 2016. Since then, we’ve exchanged ideas and good music. I sent Rod a preview of ‘The Kallikatsou Recordings’ - he really liked it - and here came the idea for a remix of ‘Lanterns’. I started working on some random, lo-fi samples from Youtube, using Audacity, perhaps the simplest way of producing loops and samples. It’s the only computer based system that feels like the tape recorders I used to work with. I sent the first sketches to Rod on Facebook, but they ended up in the wrong inbox. I forgot about them, but months later he came back saying he loved them. I decided to go back to working on them, maintaining the lo-fi approach. I began manipulating the samples: time-stretching, tempo and pitch-shifting, mixing different layers and adding old-school monophonic “old speaker” effects, delays and loops. I used a few field recordings, voices and samples from my early ambient cassettes, and they matched. Ario from Astral Industries got involved and the experiment turned into a plan - a vinyl release - ‘Red Lantern at the Kallkatsou’”.

DFA is proud to present the long-awaited debut EP by London's Marcus Marr, Familiar Five. Influenced by
classic soul, rock, disco, and acid house, the multi-instrumentalist, DJ, and producer makes spacy dance
music, often including percolating synths, funky bass guitar, and vocals. A regular at Berlin's famed
nightclub Berghain/Panorama Bar since 2014, the lifelong music obsessive's first encounters with dance
music were acid house records, which grew his vinyl collection of rock and soul, and attending all night
parties under Brixton's St Matthews Church. At last, Marr returns to DFA with a collection of elastic
bassline stompers, reminiscent of early Daft Punk. The title track Familiar Five originally began with a rock
riff, which he later repurposed as the backbone of a piece of slow, dark, dance music. Inspired by Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Faust, and Kafka's Metamorphosis, Marr explains that he wanted to make something
spooky and simple - a song utilizing very few elem ents, with a throb and synth vomit. On the flip side,
lead single High Times channels the electric guitar stylings of Nile Rodgers circa 1979, and makes good
use of the producer's trademark whizzing synths as well as vocals from collaborator Nandi Bhebe. Love
Release and Rocketship are both equally effective tracks built for the dancefloor.

Belfast-producer Space Dimension Controller, a.k.a. Jack Hamill, may be landing his debut release on Dekmantel, but he’s definitely no stranger to their shores. With the three-track EP ‘Gaining Time’ clocking in at over 35-minutes, phasing between cosmic kaleidoscopic house, and serene, epic ambient, — a sonic atmosphere reminiscent of the background resonance the galaxy permeates on a daily basis — Hamill’s Dekmantel debut is closer to that of an album, than your average set of club 12”s.
Hamill began his production career with the space-disco EP ‘Journey to the core of the unknown sphere’, a record that truly set him apart from his peers, showcasing his technical nuance, and love of melodics. Since then he’s further established himself through conceptual-album projects on Ninja Tune, experimental dancefloor EPs on R&S Records, and experimentations on techno through Royal Oak. With his penchant for techno, and inclination towards painting musical narratives around science fiction and electro-futurism, Hamill is the next step in evolution towards Detroit-like, future music, albeit from Northern Ireland. His latest EP kicks off with ‘Everything is Better Now’ and a countdown that blasts off into a trans-dimensional 14-minute journey of warped kicks, pads that phase in-and-out of our conventional timezone, a bassline that doesn’t pop-up until the four-minute mark — like a gravity fluctuation abruptly peering through a temporary wormhole—, melody, character, and a free flowing story arc worthy of the Space Dimension Controller himself. ‘Everything is Better Now’ is an epic, techno-futurist journey of progressive, fluid, epicness. ’NRG Intersect’ is a beautiful 15-minute ambient transmission from outer space, played out with synth chords, across strummed melodies and a tape deck hitch here and there, like an uncoded language from a far off land - as if Brian Eno himself has forgotten to include the track on his lunar, legacy record ‘Apollo’. ‘Still Returning’ takes the ambient coding and minimises it yet further, like Solaris itself beckoning from its cloudy, deep, mystic blue oceans.

Timur Tokdemir aka Mechatok hails from Munich but now calls Berlin his home. With his 2016 debut 'See Thru' EP on Staycore the young producer exhibited a rare gift of honing a distinct and unique style at quite a young age. The title song was accompanied by a captivating videoclip shot by Benjy Keating on the stairs of Athens' Panathenaic Stadium, able to reflect both the wide scope and the intimacy that defined the compositions. Mechatok also attracted attention thanks to the single 'Still Life' (co-produced by Toxe) which scored the Kenzo FW 2016 prints presentation. The allure of Mechatok's compositions can be partly traced back to the fact that he's a classically trained guitarist; but a distinct expertise can also be recognized in his DJ sets, where he instinctively juggles melodic pieces with club and pop music, conveying feels from vulnerability to bliss. In his mixes for Dazed and Mixmag, Mechatok tells stories of melancholy, always radiating with a moving energy. Mechatok has also shown his face as a top-notch pop producer, by providing the instrumental for Uli K and Yung Lean's "Schemin" or by remixing Sinead Harnett's "Rather Be With You" or Mr Mitch and Palmistry's "VPN", which got recently published on Planet Mu.

These days, to leave even the briefest of imprints on the ever-increasingly saturated orbit of dance music can be considered a feat in itself. To make a lasting mark, however, one that manages to cut through the onslaught of new music and artist profiles on spotlight each day, is another accomplishment entirely. Cue Dauwd, the US-born, Wales-raised artist who’s been releasing music for nearly 6 years on such noted labels as Ghostly International and Kompakt, and whose debut album Theory of Colours was released via Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour Records this May 5th.
Dauwd Al Hilali’s releases have been met with as much expectation as they have intrigue. Spending the last few years out of the limelight and in his Berlin studio, Dauwd’s music has continued to ripple through clubs as his singular, sometimes thrillingly uncertain process of experimentation has continued. Pulling inspiration from electronic music legends like Terry Riley, Raymond Scott, and the seminal Radiophonic Workshop period in the late 50’s and 60’s, Dauwd’s 2017 LP draws a unique line between influences as disparate as hazy Detroit house and early German Krautrock.
A skilled musical engineer, Dauwd’s ability to balance between such sprawling genres is, paradoxically, an exercise in restriction, finding creative freedom in limiting his own gear. It’s clear he’s no stranger to focus; sonically, Theory of Colours runs tightly wound, its loops intentional and layers meticulously built. Spanning a succinct forty minutes across seven tracks, Dauwd’s fondness for delays and love for vintage synthesizers characterize much of the album, which was recorded over the course of a year primarily in a Utrecht studio that houses one of the largest collections of vintage synths and other modular equipment in all of Europe. The result is an intricate, scintillating journey that hovers between familiar and strange. For many artists, that enigmatic gap is one that’s anxiously avoided-- the fear of misidentity as a musician more important than the music itself. Throughout Theory of Colours, it’s a space Dauwd comfortably renders as his own.

Metasplice return an absorbingly elusive, minimalist shadow of their former, noisy selves with ‘Mirvariates’ for Will Bankhead’s The Trilogy Tapes

Following a slight hiatus and a canny rethink of their sound, Metasplice’s first new studio album in five years, Mirivates defines the Philadelphian duo’s acute inversion from noisy roil to shimmering lower case sounds across seven tracks embracing negative space as a vital new part of their music.

Gauging by the skinny, barely-there aesthetics of Marinates, one would be forgiven for thinking that Metasplice only submitted the scrubbed stems of the album to TTT. However, closer listening reveals a series of oblique, abstract electro-acoustic ecosystems that bristle with virulent energy, perhaps emulating the varied ambiences of a space station (“Mir”?), the coded inner dialogues of stressed out machinery, or the sound of the Internet of Things plotting their take-over of humanity in encrypted electro-magnetic chatter.

Over the course of seven tracks they pay special attention to volume dynamics and texture, with fathomless abstract shapes looming from the darkness in persistently reorienting and amorphous style, as the imagined “walls” of each piece seem to dissolve and establish new dimensions within each cut, from the tentatively perilous explorations of ‘Cirrension’, to the free jazz-like squabble of ‘Teleric’, thru the clipped gamelan resonances of ‘Vase Weight Re-Route’, and the Xth Reeflexion-liek fuss of ‘Aridtaq’, and up to the parting, side-long denouement of ‘Speculen’, where a melodic spirit seems to be seductively struggling thru their finely graded textures and airborne sediments.

It’s all effectively and undoubtedly a radical break with past Metasplice releases, reeling away from the ‘floor to somewhere much more abstract and difficult to properly fathom with words. It’s best to just treat these recordings like seashells scavenged from the liminal shores of perception, awaiting your close ear inspection and interpretation.

This is the first release on our new Ex Machina collection; “Exit/Accidental (Abstract)” is a carefully chosen selection from the first cassette-only album “Exit/Accidental” (1988) by prolific Berlin-based producer and music publisher Mickeyblitz Finnkrieg, very active in the late 80s who, besides self-producing and distributing his music, also single-handedly ran a thriving underground cassette label called Deaf Eye, releasing about ten different productions and several international compilations. M. Finnkrieg worked in parallel lines to any known music circuit. This might be the main reason why his music has remained highly confidential so far. Incidentally: a Mickey Finn – or simply a Mickey – is a drink laced with a psychoactive drug or incapacitating agent given to someone without their knowledge, intending to incapacitate them. Heavily indebted to bands like Severed Heads and British Industrials in the vein of Cabaret Voltaire, early Test Dept. or Sonic Youth, the tracks selected on this album present the outcome of many a late practice evening and live sessions well into the small hours, experimenting in a completely self-made music lab with tape loops, resistors, capacitors, transistors, 8-bit samplers, guitars and a nice array of synths (Korg MS-20, Roland SH-1, Roland TB 303, Korg Polysix…), drum machines (Roland TR 505, TR 707, CR-78…) and loads of effect gadgets producing a distinctive sound, not far from proto-techno/electro and industrial-disco with touches of ebm and out-there funk. An all-analogic production and loaded with pre-recorded reel-to-reel samples, this recording, salvaged after 30 years, is a perfect illustration of the DIY philosophy and independent spirits of the time, cutting through time barriers with a sound as valid today as when it was first made.

They famously favour machines over computers and provide hypnotic live shows. Blondes have released the majority of their discography for Rvng Intl., before jumping to R&S in 2017 for the more danceable Warmth album.

It captures the essence of a sentiment during the brutal 8-year war between Iran-Iraq. It is also defensive, and perhaps in response to existing in the US over the past 7 years. But also because of it. Therein lies the beauty of this country. Today, let's talk about this. Glass half full. This country. This beautiful, incredible, fucked up country. The artwork is part of an edited collection of images pulled together from the years of the Iran-Iraq war. A collection of 15 works of art titled Postcards from the Outer Boroughs. Some of these images belonged to our family, others we found by forming a dialogue with the actual men who fought in battle with our family members. Men who remember those last, precious moments of the lives of our loved ones. We were curious to somehow learn more about that moment from those who served. These Postcards are the culmination of the hard work and imagination of Ghalamdar, a wonderful Iranian visual artist based in the UK. In them, we explored how we could modify these quintessentially Iranian motifs to lift the weight of emotion, the weight of innocence, of loss, of blind faith, to the end? How do we connect an Iran of the past, Iran of the books, to the Iran of today? After all, we are of the same blood. You may know of “Rude Movements”, an early dance music classic produced by SunPalace (Mike Collins and Keith O’Connell) back in 1983 that brought together proto-house, balearic beats and funky vibes. In 1984, the tune quickly became an anthem that could regularly be heard at David Mancuso’s “The Loft” or at Larry Levan’s “Paradise Garage” for example. Thanks to Mike Collins, the studio veteran still in the business after more than 35 years and currently busy perpetuating the legacy of SunPalace, more material from the archives has been ‘surfacing’ over the past few years on UK-based record labels. After a very productive meeting earlier this year, Parisian label Chuwanaga is really proud to present four unreleased songs produced between 1982 and 1984! Co-written by Mike Collins from SunPalace and Breeze McKrieth, a founder member of Britfunk bands Light Of The World and Beggar & Co, these Lost Songs are the almost forgotten result of this seminal collaboration, an exclusive musical rendez-vous between experienced studio music makers and funksters at the top of their game, including some of the finest Britfunk musicians. Bringing together eighties influences and futuristic sounds, the result covers a wide range of genres, from jazz-funk to new wave: it captured a unique moment in British musical history, a smooth transition to a more electronic sound.
