Als man in den 1970er Jahren in New York und London »No Future« zu skandieren begann, konnten die Pioniere des Punk kaum ahnen, wie viel Future sich da noch auftun würde für ihre frisch entstehende Bewegung. Damals stand »No Future« für die große Hoffnungslosigkeit einer Generation, die in einer verstaubte Nachkriegszeit aufwuchs, von den Sozialsystemen übersehen wurde und oft ohne Arbeit und Perspektive ihre Jugend verschwendete. Und während auch die meisten anderen Sub-Kulturen aus einer Unzufriedenheit mit dem Status Quo heraus geboren wurden, gibt es keine, die dafür so exemplarisch steht, wie der Punk. So unterschiedlich die einzelnen Biographien gewesen sein mögen, so sehr einten sie sich in dem Gefühl, sowohl politisch als auch durch die Mainstream-Kultur nicht ausreichend repräsentiert zu werden. Bewusst grenzte man sich ab von der Hippie-Bewegung mit ihrem naiven Feelgood-Gestus und den teilweise stark verkopften Ausdrucksformen, die man für elitär und weltfremd hielt.

Punk – drei Akkorde, die die Welt bedeuten

Musikalisch standen der Garagenrock und der Rock’n’Roll der 1960er Jahre dem Punk Pate, allerdings in einer wesentlich roheren Form. So lassen die buchstäblichen und sprichwörtlichen drei Akkorde, aus denen die meisten Werke des Punk sich zusammensetzen, sich durchaus als künstlerische Form des Protests begreifen, denn drei Akkorde kann jeder. Die Message war klar: »Übt ihr mal schön Tonleitern bei eurer klassischen Querflötenausbildung, in der gleichen Zeit haben wir schon zwei Alben auf den Markt geschmissen und hunderte von Gigs gespielt.« Eine der Brutstätten in diesem Zusammenhang war das legendäre CBGB OMFUG in New York. Es bot Künstlern, wie den Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith, den Stooges und den Talking Heads, die Möglichkeit, regelmäßig vor Publikum aufzutreten und sich zu vernetzen. Parallel formierte sich in London eine Punk-Bewegung, die noch wesentlich wütender und auf ihre Art politischer war. Bands wie die Sex Pistols und The Clash haben den Punk nicht nur endgültig nach Europa gebracht, sie prägen auch bis heute sein Bild als die Galionsfiguren der Bewegung und das nicht nur musikalisch, sondern als Gesamtkunstwert, das von der »Fuck you-Attitude« bis zu den Artworks reicht.

Noch zu weich? Hier kommt Hardcore

Als der Punk in den verstreutesten Ecken der Welt zu blühen begann, entwickelte sich auch schon der Hardcore-Punk, der die musikalischen Ausdrucksmittel noch weiter radikalisierte und für sich beanspruchte, sich auf die ursprünglichen Ideale der Bewegung zurückzubesinnen. Als wichtigste Vertreter des Genres gelten bis heute vor allem die Dead Kennedys, Black Flag und Minor Threat. Diese Szene hatte wieder ihre ganz eigenen (strengen) Gesetze, was unter anderem ein Grund dafür war, dass sie sich immer weiter aufspaltete und »Hardcore« zum diffusen Oberbegriff für unzählige Subgenres wurde. Nach und nach gewannen andere Genres an Einfluss, wodurch Metalcore respektive New School Hardcore, Grunge und Emo entstanden. Eine bis heute äußerst beliebtes Têtê-à-Têtê von Genres ist der Crossover, den die Beastie Boys maßgeblich beeinflussten, als sie den Hip Hop mit ins Game holten.
