Chicago-based guitarist / composer Eli Winter's new self-titled album finds him building on the promise of his recent records - like 2020's Unbecoming and his 2021 collaboration with Cameron Knowler, Anticipation - with a gem of an album on which he leads an ad-hoc group that delicately balances a range of colors and moods. The result is unmistakably a complete synthesis of their respective sounds and styles, a sum that makes sense and leaves you wondering “how didn’t this happen sooner?” Any attempt to describe the nature of this particular collaboration is fraught, with it impossible to say where lines might get drawn, because there simply aren’t any. One of this LP’s many pleasures is the inability to identify specific emotions within it, despite the undeniable emotional responses it elicits. I was born to lose; I wont have this form forever. So begins Horsebacks fifth full-length studio record, Piedmont Apocrypha, with an incantation that could very well serve as the shapeshifting bands raison dtre. Since before 2007, Horseback has served as a musical vehicle for multi-instrumentalist Jenks Miller (also of Mount Moriah and various solo outfits), chronicling his prolific, exuberant, and at times altogether whimsical investigation of heavy music(s) and their relationship with Western mysticism. Thus far, Horseback has embodied (and shed) many forms, from the serene, fuzzed-out, near neo classical bliss of Impale Golden Horn, to the caustic, poisoned noisescapes of Forbidden Planet, to the crushing psych-rock (black metal? you tell us!) found on The Invisible Mountain and Half Blood. While genre tags are difficult with shape-shifting bands like Horseback, some common threads are readily apparent across each of these records: regardless of the style, theres some otherworldly, hypnotic quality in the music, conjured by ritualistic repetition and a layered depth in the instrumental arrangements. And each record demonstrates an unmistakable internal logic, its own a self-contained universe of sound. Some have referred to Horseback records as riddles to be solved: once you crack the code, that sonic universe is yours to explore. Musically, Piedmont Apocrypha gestures to the pastoral hues of Impale Golden Horn (released on vinyl by Three Lobed for the first time in 2012), but theres a structured quality to the tracks here that fits in line with Horsebacks rock records. Make no mistake: this is a heavy record, but in the way Comus First Utterance is heavy, or in the way Amon Dls Phallus Dei is heavy. Its that patient, smoke-clogged, ritualistic vibe, solemn with the noticeable presence of layered organ and harmonium tones (perhaps a subtle nod to Terry Riley or even Olivier Messiaen). For almost thirty years and over the course of countless releases, the American band Pelt has traversed non-idiomatic improv, Eastern-tinged psychoacoustic drones. The group once counted among its ranks the late guitarist Jack Rose, whose spirit continues to imbue Pelt's music with a sound that is as forward-thinking as it is refreshingly unpretentious. "Reticence Resistance" was recorded in London over two nights in 2017 and is focused on piano, harmonium, fiddle, percussion, banjo, harmonium, bowls, and bells. The pieces as mesmerizing, harmoniously advancing and receding, at first almost imperceptibly, recalling Coltrane's improvisations circa 'India' as much as it does ocean currents and lapping waves. Pelt clearly possess a firm grasp of the American folk vernacular, and similarly honor this history without resorting to pastiche or cliché - "Reticence Resistance" is a crucial document of Ever Weird America, and quite possibly the band's finest work to date.

"The Veiled Sea" is easily one the most viscerally satisfying records in the Six Organs of Admittance discography. As always, Chasny finds the invisible threads between incongruous sound worlds. Here it's American (electric) guitar heroics and galactic postpunk, Popol Vuh-ish pastoralism and heavy psych. But these disparate musical regions are here rendered so fully and tangibly, one is struck by the sheer mass of them. It is an improbable universe, but somehow it all connects. This is a record a little outside of the standard Six Organs catalog but no less a perfect part of it - one where big, beefy extended electric guitar solos stand proudly on one track and extraterrestrial-seeming rock on the next. Chasny is always one to boldly follow his own muse and the audience has always had the privilege of following. "The Veiled Sea" is no exception and a grand addition to the 6Ø catalog.

Boerum Palace is Steve Gunn's second album, originally released in 2009. The album starts off with a headlong rush into the hypnotic 'Mr. Franklin'. Gunn's fluid playing style, especially as portrayed within this track, provides ample space for the development of infectious musical themes. The track ends in a dextrous duel between Gunn's guitar and guest Marc Orleans' (of D. Charles Speer & the Helix, Sunburned Hand of the Man) vicious pedal steel. The album mixes Gunn's long-form blues / raga / psych explorations alongside briefer cuts that equally display his songcraft. T and "Jadins Dream," demonstrate that Gunn is equally confident with shorter or longer compositions. Gunns voice is joined by an ethereal turn from the Vanishing Voices Heidi Diehl on the albums central and haunting "House of Knowledge." the track opens with a building central guitar theme. This theme allows Gunn to layer on further guitar explorations. The tone set by these musical themes builds into the duo's vocal delivery that delivers volumes despite being uttered in gentle tones. Danny Paul Grody's position within the modern instrumental guitar underground is unique - he isn't a polymath or a virtuoso.
