"Lili Refrain’s newest LP Mana lives up to its title. A combination of Anna Von Hausswolff and Burning World-era Swans" , following the words of Walter Hoeijmakers, the founder of Roadburn Festival. Each track is multifaceted and they all have a heft to them, a weight that translates well to Refrain’s multi-instrumentalist abilities. Commenting on the nature of recording process Lili states: “Mana is an album totally different from anything I've ever done before. I felt the need to experiment with the use of new instruments and take a totally new path. Compared to my previous album Mana is the most ritual in some ways”. Refrain comments on the origin of the title saying: “It means ‘life force’, power that comes from within and is dedicated to those who have found themselves consciously facing a journey, without knowing where it would have arrived or even if it would have survived.” Using very few guitars, Lili Refrain has not only distanced herself from her comfort zone but also created a danceable feel focusing on arrangements and vocal techniques. However, the work on background sounds was very deliberate , as Lili notices: “Stefano Morabito, the engineer and the owner of "16th Cellar Studio" in Rome welcomed me in his studio and had been following me throughout the production.” “Spontaneous” is probably the best description of creating the record that became Mana. “I felt the need to experiment.” – says Lili about the current evolutions and changes in her “inner gaze”. Starting with Ichor , Sangoma and Mami Wata, Lili Refrain has been going down the path of rediscovering herself as an artist and performer. Combining both heavy synths sounds and operatic heights. Pairing Taiko drum sounds of Mami Wata with her trilling and whispering, Lili Refrain manages to create a chanting and ritualistic experience. Since its creation in 2007, Hifiklub has led more than 150 collaborations which have allowed the Toulon trio to open its music to multiple artistic experiences revealing a constant desire for research and novelty. From unprecedented encounters to unique projects, Hifiklub has developed over the years a now substantial discography whose musical proposals range from pop to jazz through the most experimental sounds and even traditional music. One path, however, remained unexplored: contemporary music."Last Party On Earth" is organized around the association of three energies: contemporary composer Jean-Michel Bossini, singer Duke Garwood and the instrumental ensemble Hifiklub. Surrounded by mysticism and darkness, the creation has cinematographic dimensions. It positions the listener in a depth and disposition of soul where the voice - and the poetry - of Duke Garwood is carried by Hifiklub and Jean-Michel Bossini around cold and tormented atmospheres. The album seduces by the detail of its sounds, its apparent tranquility and its intimate atmospheres thwarted by harsh flashes. Mixed by Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Eleven), the album sees the exceptional participation of the string trio Anpapié (Alice Piérot, Fanny Paccoud and Elena Andreyev) who magnificently perform the score by Jean-Michel Bossini. Formed with the idea to demonstrate the worst that exists in each person, and with a decent dose of pessimism towards the world as we know it, Brazilian black metal solo artist Pessimista has announced the worldwide release of his latest, 2021- album, titled "Ocaso". Set for release on August 20th via Subsound Records, "Ocaso“ will be available worldwide and for the first time in black vinyl (200) and strictly limited orange vinyl editions (100). Says Pessimista: "This album will finally be released on vinyl, becoming a milestone for the band and a personal milestone. I am sure that Subsound Records will do an excellent job, as I have been following their releases and I know that the various weight bands are happy with the work developed".

Previte Chandler is a conversation between two opposing approaches toward the same goal: reaching a natural autonomy. Previte employs an expanded conception of the modern drum set, a circularity that suggests rather than shows, using the powerful orchestrational might of the drum set to create form and meaning. Chandler uses his guitar as a tone generator (there are no synthesizers) to create “Sound Ribbons” - sonic fabrics made in real time that create a way of deconstructing and then enveloping and weaving together any series of individual pieces of music or film. These two musicians, who circled each other for years in the New York City music scene, are now turning the deep chasm between them into a bridge connecting the natural and the supernatural, the audible and the spiritual. Knox Chandler’s career has spanned for over four decades, including performing, recording, arranging and producing, with such acts as REM, Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, Marianne Faithful, Natalie Merchant, Tricky, The Creatures, Dave Gahan Paper Monsters and The Golden Palominos etc. His long stints as a member of The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Cyndi Lauper’s band; has given Knox the experience of a worldwide recording and touring musician. For the past ten years Knox was residing in Berlin Germany, deepening his exploration of sonic soundscapes (Sound Ribbons), and applying it to different genres and mediums. Doom Jazz II: Deception continues the epic story of the Doom Jazz saga, with Jamie Saft and Bobby Previte trading the slow, sensual lines of Doom Jazz I for a more active, muscular sound. Side One, "The New Friend" and "Everyone is Aware" uses a vintage Yamaha organ to create an atmosphere of mystery and space. Side Two, "Deception" moves into different territory, Saft's distorted Hammond Organ sailing over Previte's active, commanding tom toms in a blues based jam of wild ferocity and intense foreboding. The plot thickens.

"...it rises, becomes bitter, deflagrates and concludes with an invocation, resumes with lightness, continues with sweetness and ends in oblivion like a comet's tail that has crossed a solar system and continues its journey.” Divus is the duo from Rome comprised of electronic musician Luciano Lamanna and saxophone player Luca T. Mai (Zu, Mombu). The collaboration between Lamanna and Mai developes in new territories suprisingly far from their usual sound. Their influences coming from techno and jazzcore/metal are both left aside in favour of a more nocturnal and atmospheric approach to jazz and electronic music: so dreamy, smokey and dark, It could suit a future sci-fi crime movie shot in one dystopian metropolitan suburb.

“Songs of stone” is a musical project based on several epigrams, elegies and laments that Gabriele Tinti composed inspired by epigraphs from the ancient world. It arises from the wish to sustain the necessary link that joins us to the rituals of the past. The inscriptioN on durable material was one of the languages the ancients used to oppose the transience of oral expression, wishing to conserve their words in time. Tinti gathers these ideas to create verses he entrusts to the actor’s interpretation, thus combining the impression of the spoken word and the visual participation of the words in stone. The readings are made by Malcolm McDowell, star of numerous cult films including A Clockwork Orange, If... and Caligula. Tinti’s words and the actor’s vocal performance are put together by Massimo Pupillo in a work intended to transgress the confines between reality and ancient mythology. Massimo has created an imaginary landscape, creating a visionary theatre for Gabriele Tinti 's words, a sound world born and based on the precise and eloquent vocal timbre of Malcolm McDowell. Using a plethora of different sources, various synthesis, samples of eastern european choirs, processing Mc Dowell voice, Songs of Stone will bring the listener in a twilight zone between dreams and mythology, where remote past and future horizons meet

Surely our most instinctive effort so far. We went back to our roots of live recording, this time instead of a stage we chose an old mansion from late '1700 outside Rome. The atmosphere there was so charming and stimulating that 13 minutes of a 45 min long improvisation ended up in the album. We wanted the dynamics and moods of the parts to be the most important thing, taking more time than our usual developing the "story" of the songs.

Solo effort from Syk vocalist Dalila Kayros, the Italian avant-metal band comprised of guitarist and principal songwriter Stefano Ferrian (ex-Psychofagist), vocalist, rhythm/lead guitarist Marcello Cravini, and drummer Mauro Maraldo (ex-Onirik). While the former somehow recalls Meshuggah with the haunting melodies of Bjork, Animami is about discovering the dark side of the mind as an endless path of inner transformation. The Animami album embodies an exploration path into consciousness facing all shadows hidden inside. From the deep black sea to the dawn of a new transmutation. "Animàmi" is the name of the shadows, entities living in the unconscious and forming a chaotic matter melted with thought and emotions. They are vanishing but visible and capable of appearing in multiple shapes.The Animami journey is about meeting with the shadow, so through a magical rite, the unintegrated part of the self gets merged into a more complex totality.

The themes are simple, generally carried by subdued bass lines and ornamented by the piano like salt on a glacier. What jumps out most is Previte's drumming. Every cymbal vibration and snare snap leaps to the foreground and, with rare exception, decays before the next strike, as much a testament to Previte's assured playing as Saft's engineering. The sound throughout is bright and super present. Each moment is its own event, each note frozen in amber. Regardless of the rock modeling, the disc is likely to satisfy Saft and Previte's audiences; it could appeal to fans of the fringes of metal as well. Originally released in 2021, 'Doom Jazz' is being re-issued by Subsound Records in ultra LTD edition double galaxy LP, LTD edition double white LP, double black LP, CD digipack. The album title already tells you everything you need to know about Cannibal Corpse's fifteenth hellish opus. Comprised of eleven brutal tracks, Violence Unimagined is state of the art death metal played with passion and breathless precision, making for another flawless addition to what is inarguably one of the premier catalogues the genre has thrown up. “It really follows the path we’ve been going down for a few years now,” states bassist and founding member Alex Webster. “I think we approach the writing in a similar way most every time: each of us try to write the heaviest, most memorable songs we can. Filling in live on guitar since 2019, in 2020 he became a full member, contributing to the writing process. Already well known for the level of extreme technicality they bring to every record, on Violence Unimagined, Cannibal Corpse have further upped their game, particularly in Mazurkiewicz’s drumming. “I think we all pushed ourselves a bit technically on this one, with Paul probably pushing the hardest. This album is probably the most drum-intense album we’ve done yet. Part of that could be a result of Erik joining the band. His song writing style often features technically challenging drumming, probably owing to his years of experience in high speed death metal.” And with typically dark and warped lyrical content, Mazurkiewicz came up with the fitting title of the record, “summing up what the band is about in every facet, and taking violence to another level of extremity.”

Now available on color vinyl ! In the spring of 2017, Hayvanlar Alemi closed themselves in a studio in a small Italian town for a few days and recorded material for multiple future releases. Psychedelia in Times of Turbulence includes the heavier compositions that came out of these sessions, and marks a further stage in the band's 20 year history with a more layered production and an emphasis on slower, progressive compositions that carry elements from drone metal, stoner rock and psychedelic doom, while subtly preserving the overtones of the band's brand of globally-informed folkloric psych rock. This album presents the side of Hayvanlar Alemi which tends towards the darker without losing the colors, and tends towards the sombre without losing the vitality, with songs that surrender to gravity but refuse to touch the ground.

The Kotiomkin were born in 2012 from the idea of Enzo P. Zeder to compose soundtracks for imaginary films of which he himself is the author. The group is inspired by the great masters of Italian soundtracks of the '60s/'70s/'80s filtering everything through a wall of eclecticism, distortion, low frequencies and vibrations.

For the composition of their third work "Lo Albicocco Al Curaro - Decameron 666" (Subsound Records, 2018) there was a change of line up and the guitar was replaced by a massive use of vintage analogic synthesizers giving life to an album that crosses, transversally, different musical genres with an ever more relevant cinematographic imprint.

The new record from M.M.M. (Macelleria Mobile Di Mezzanotte) goes back to the sound of "Black Lake Confidence" and reveals more cold and deeper Doom Jazz suites in the style of Bohren and Der Club of Gore, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation, Dale Cooper quartet. Manuele Frau (Der Noir, Blackland) joins the band to play guitar tunes, while Riccardo Chiaretti (Moonlite Bunny Ranch, Chaos/Order), who has contributed on the last two records, performs more songs and helped with songwriting. New soundscapes are explored by the band on this fine new album on Subsound Records.

Previte Chandler is a conversation between two opposing approaches toward the same goal: reaching a natural autonomy. Previte employs an expanded conception of the modern drum set, a circularity that suggests rather than shows, using the powerful orchestrational might of the drum set to create form and meaning. Chandler uses his guitar as a tone generator (there are no synthesizers) to create “Sound Ribbons” - sonic fabrics made in real time that create a way of deconstructing and then enveloping and weaving together any series of individual pieces of music or film. These two musicians, who circled each other for years in the New York City music scene, are now turning the deep chasm between them into a bridge connecting the natural and the supernatural, the audible and the spiritual. Knox Chandler’s career has spanned for over four decades, including performing, recording, arranging and producing, with such acts as REM, Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, Marianne Faithful, Natalie Merchant, Tricky, The Creatures, Dave Gahan Paper Monsters and The Golden Palominos etc. His long stints as a member of The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Cyndi Lauper’s band; has given Knox the experience of a worldwide recording and touring musician. Ainu is a Genoese cinematic sludge/post-doom trio established in 2021. The album was released in October of the same year to immediate and enthusiastic feedback from the press and the public, and a few months later Zu began to play on stages all over Europe. But the band's inexperience in recording work weighed on them, because the impact they had live was not present in the sound of the CD at all. So it was that during the slightly forced hiatus from 2020 onwards, they finally found the time to reopen those recordings, rework them in various ways, resonate some parts and release Bromio 25 years later in a sound that was much closer to the impact and sound system of their live performances. Listening to it again 25 years later, it still sounds fresh and vibrant, not tied to any predetermined genre or fashion of the moment (it is curious and almost comical that they were called 'jazzcore' when in fact the basis of their sound drew much more from prog and metal). Looking for their own voice, without excluding any direction: electronics, tapes, sequencer (Film Nero) cello (played by their friend Francesco Chiari), and of course their first iconoclastic outbursts on bass sax and drums. One can obviously hear the shared love for NoMeansNo and Ruins, but much more was already part of Zu's DNA, including an instinctive ability to digest the myriad listens and influences that permeated them, without ever copying anything but transforming everything into their own personal voice. After about two years of intense and continuous rehearsals, this tape was the first demo they sent out, recorded in that room by their friend Giampaolo Felici, with whom they shared that space and with whom years later they would also found Ardecore. The cassette went around so much that the Zu themselves could not find a single copy of it, until one mysteriously reappeared, intact and still perfectly listenable, which transferred and mastered became, more than 25 years later, THE Lost Demo
