From the cover art to the lyrics, death metal legends Deicide didn’t give an inch when it came to their uncompromising anti-church stance on their 1995 release Once Upon the Cross. In fact, the album included samples from the film The Last Temptation of Christ, which was itself accused of blasphemy. But the band was hardly standing still, as the gobsmacking guitar pyrotechnics of Eric and Brian Hoffman and furious fusillades of bassist/vocalist Glen Benton and drummer Steve Asheim became ever more awe-inspiring and, dare we say it, miraculous. For its 30th anniversary, we are giving Once Upon the Cross its American vinyl debut with a blue, red, and gray “autobots” pressing complete with printed inner sleeve. Limited to 2500 copies!

Having countryman John Cale label your first-ever commercial release “his favourite album ever” is about as good a start as a Welsh rock band could hope for. And after several subsequent, critically-acclaimed albums on the Ankst label, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci caught the attention of a major label (Fontana) and released this 1997 psych-folk masterpiece. Two singles resulted, both charting: the gently rocking “Diamond Dew” and the twisted pop ditty “Patio Song,” but Barafundle is above all an Album, taking you on a benevolently bent journey akin to the Small Faces’ Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, which is high praise indeed. For its first-ever domestic LP release, we’re pressing up 2000 copies in jungle swirl vinyl, housed inside a jacket with printed inner sleeve. Put a log on the fire, brew up some mushroom tea, and bliss out.

Real Gone Music concludes its long-anticipated ride through Better Than Ezra’s Elektra catalog with the one album that Never made it to vinyl before, 1998’s How Does Your Garden Grow? Which, we suppose, is what BTE get for making their most ambitious album (to add insult to injury, Elektra dropped them after this record). But a lot of folks think How Does Your Garden Grow was their best release, an inspired and graceful course correction away from grunge pop to an eclectic sound incorporating electronica, hip-hop, Brit-Pop, and even a little second-line rhythm from their hometown of New Orleans. It scored some hits, too: “One More Murder” (also heard in The X-Files film soundtrack) and the Top 20 smash “At the Stars.” For its album debut, we’ve pressed up 2500 copies of this 2-lp set in orange crush vinyl, and put ‘em inside a gatefold jacket. Released with the full support of the band…only available at participating Record Store Day stores!

Native American guitarist Jesse Ed Davis was the “go-to” guy for a remarkable group of musicians. Starting in the mid-‘60s, he toured with Conway Twitty, then became a key part of Taj Mahal’s band, playing on several albums and tours including an appearance in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, and, perhaps most famously, accompanied George Harrison during the Concert for Bangladesh, followed by work on various solo albums by John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Gene Clark, Leonard Cohen, and Jackson Browne (that’s Jesse taking the solo on his 1972 breakout hit “Doctor My Eyes”).
All this activity caught the eye of ATCO Records, who released his debut LP Jesse Davis in 1971. The album featured Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Gram Parsons, Merry Clayton, Ben Sidran, John Simon (producer of The Band), Alan White (of Yes), and many others including Delaney Bramlett behind the mixing desk. A year later, Atco released Ululu containing some of the same all-stars, plus Duck Dunn, Jim Keltner, and Dr. John – and a version of George Harrison’s “Sue Me, Sue You Blues” before even George recorded it.
Of late, there’s been something of a Jesse Ed Davis revival. Besides Real Gone Records releases, Davis was a major figure in the documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World…and now this fall comes a full-fledged biography, Washita Love Child: The Life and Times of Jesse Ed Davis, by Dr. Douglas Miller.
To honor the man and the occasion of the book’s release (and to slake guitar-heads the world over thirsting for more tasty Jesse Ed licks), Real Gone Music releases Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day: The Unissued Atco Recordings 1970-1971, a double-LP collection consisting of, as the title says, all unreleased recordings taken from Jesse’s sessions for his two Atco solo records. Along the way you’ll find completely unreleased songs (“Slinky Jam”), unexpected covers of “Ain’t No Beatle,” “Kansas City,” and “Tracks of My Tears,” unissued instrumentals (including a version of Dylan’s “Love Minus Zero/No Limit”), and an entire side featuring alternate versions of Jesse’s masterpiece, “Washita Love Child.”
Remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, and featuring notes by Dr. Miller festooned by photos contributed by Jesse’s son William “Billy” Noriega, Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day: The Unissued Atco Recordings 1970-1971 represents a major archival find from one of rock’s most intriguing characters, out on Cobalt “Blue Jean” vinyl limited to 1500 copies worldwide.

Had a bad day? Well, news of this 1995 smash album (also known as Daniel Powter) finally receiving a vinyl release should turn it around! Yes, it does indeed include the #1 hit “Bad Day,” which is one of those songs that has so fully infiltrated pop culture that most people don’t even know who the original performer was!
But this RSD Black Friday reissue should remind them: it’s a model of finely-crafted adult alternative pop, produced (but not overly polished) by Mitchell Froom. DP went Top Ten not just in the US, but in the UK, Japan…and, of course, was a huge hit in Powter’s native Canada.
