DJ Lycox twysts kuduro and tarraxho with drill’s glyding basslines and rugged sound design on a heavily satisfying follow-up to his sought-after 2017 debut LP.

Príncipe’s Parisian ambassador is among the Lisbon label’s earliest recruits as part of key act TMP, and since 1st album ’Sonhos & Pesadelos’ (2017) he’s struck gold with a trio of distinctive solo slabs. On second LP ‘Guetto Star’ he continues to bend the kuduro formula into expressive new forms that balance its sensitive, bluesy grip with rudely swingeing traction on 10 dancefloor bullets scaled between sultry slow jams and proper club pressure. A fiercely disciplined sense of syncopated groove control keeps it tight in the pocket but combusting with concentrated, offbeat energy to put dancers right in the zone.

As with all Príncipe drops, it’s a heavy pleasure to follow its incremental developments of variation within a style. Whilst comparable to grimy and Afrocentric London movements, and new Brazilian baile, DJ Lycox remains distinguished from either, umbilically attached to the Lisbon sound as the trax budge from nods to drill’s funereal minor key melodies and glyding basses in the squashed triplets of opener ‘yaaahh’ thru the delirious but militant killers ‘Energia’, ‘Pedale KU El’ and lockstepper ’To Bem Loko’.

He wraps up rudest horns with scything noise under lilting rap on a highlight ‘Mortal Kombat’ and stabs brass like a jabbing Ramon Successo on the ‘floor-sloshing barrio banger ‘Contemptoraneo’, but insistently tempers the mode with floruishes of nagging bluesy melody in expressive gems such as the breezily romantic plead of ‘Edson no Urge’, and a centrepiece of screwed, gyrating drill x tarraxho ‘Guetto Love’, whilst plucking the heartstrings in ‘Staring at the Moon.

For ardent followers of freshest dancefloor mutations the whole album is nothing less than a straight doozy. And if you know anything about this label, ya know it’s going to fly out.

Príncipe bless 2025 with a new drop from Lisbon dynamo DJ Kolt’s Blacksea Não Maya unit, sloshing prime subs and wickedly wigged-out synths around body-shaped polyrhythms. It's a proper standout for fans of Príncipe’s inspirational, odder integers, sounding something like DJ Lycox, Moin and Young Echo on a jolly. Yep.

On the spurs of his killer solo slab ‘Verdadeiro’ (p050, 2024), DJ Kolt’s watermark of dare-to-differ ingenuity plays to the weirder thrills of dance music. He brilliantly challenges and toys with expectations, rather than play to the putative common denominators which have set the bar low when compared with club music’s adventurous past, as experienced in the flesh as opposed to mediated via paid-for IG squares.

One for the freaks and those who trust their dancefloor instincts, ‘Despertar’ shells nine super loosey goosey grooves in tight timeframes, each defined by a bias toward proper, bottom heavy weight and wiggle, but cutting wilder in the upper registers with colourfully discordant and cosmically harmonised synths, even leaning into a sort of modern blooz-rocky and acidic psychy vibrancy. In key with Príncipe’s broad artistic license, he does not patronise the ‘floor, giving it what it needs, rather than just what it wants.

A singular unquantised ballast guides the badness from curdled tarraxho in ‘Reborda’ to autotuned blooz in ‘Theca’, via the heady motion of squashed subs and squeezed organ on ‘Tolobasco’, to unexpected hard metal-lic riffage in the bendy-legged dubstep-esque verve of ‘Unseicambo’. Kolt's most surprising sidestep arrives with 'balebale', a grungy masterstroke that replaces electronic snaps and synths with tense live drums, distorted guitars, autoTune-d ad-libs and moody pads on a sort of angular mid-point between Moin and Lil Uzi Vert, while ‘Kirraxo’, recalls Paul Marmota’s gothic dembow and ‘Prala’ simply goes hard on a mutant jack.

Even by Príncipe's standards, it’s way up there.

Blacksea Não Maya’s DJ Kolt serves pure kuduro hoof and wiggle on his penultimate 12” with Lisbon’s Príncipe powerhouse.

Previously heard on jams with DJ Noronho and DJ Perigoso in 2015, DJ Kolt recently signalled his intent to retire from the kuduro game, but not until he’s dropped two final 12”s on the deadly Príncipe. ‘Verdadeciro’ features four swingeing variants toggling the pressure gauge between sub-loaded and breezy canter, galloping badness, and a lethal, UKF-style winner that’s bound for summer destruction.

Vibes steadily escalate in intensity from the pendulous, scything drums and bloozy string motif tucked into bolshy motion on ‘Fiqexpert’, to the big room-sweeping rave flares and powerful slosh of ‘vuguvuguu’, to dial in wickedly discordant bleeps and see-sawing leads with a wide-eyed UK ’91 gnash and surprisingly moody finish on ‘bateste’, then utterly finishing us off with the laser-guided hardcore pressure of ‘Shaman’, complete with diva stabs and fanfares synched to subbass in a way recalling Pinch’s post-UKF productions, but with bags of extra wiggle room.

Proper heavy, this.

Hot out of Lisbon’s ghetto sprawl, 19 year old Puto Tito breaks thru on Príncipe with 20 tracks produced when he was barely into his teens, all salvaged from an old Soundcloud account and newly remastered for the dance. The sound of ‘Carregando a Vida Atrás das Costas’ is patently influenced by Tito’s Angolan heritage, and faithfully employs the popular slow Tarraxho and tougher Kuduro rhythm styles. Yet, like the best of Príncipe’s releases, it’s the way he injects a playful, weirdo character and uncompromising, psychedelic vision to his trax that sets Tito’s music apart form the crowd, whilst being very much connected to it.

‘Chá Preto’ invites the dance to the furthest reaches of DJ N-Fox’s imagination. Since debuting in 2013, the Lisbon-based artist has been a radical force in contemporary club music, physically making everyone move to his different beat and vibe. Perhaps best compared to Nídia in his field for an ability to juice unique motion and emotion from his music, in ‘Chá Preto’ the artist follows his nose for outright weird and singular style and pattern on all counts, prompting mind/body with liquified syncopations and synth sensations that simply feel strange and satisfying to even the hardest-to-please raver or oddbeat chin stroker. On his first mission since 2022, DJ N-Fox follows the form of his ‘Música Da Terra’ EP and a string of Warp bullets into the beyond. The spectral carousel of lop-sided subbass and haunted fairground melodies in ‘Ondas da Terra’ pick straight up from his previous, before ‘Má Rotina’ pushes a more bittersweet sort of bloozy introspection with clipped West African rhythms trotting on bombed out bass laced with ambient pads and an ohrwurming chant that sets up ‘Mutadoree’ on a tip like Lolina adrift in Yorgos Lanthimos’ oneiric depiction of Lisbon in ‘Poor Things’ and conveys fantastical feelings we can’t quite translate, whilst ‘Bom Te Ver’ reminds us of Marina Rosenfeld’s electro-dub kerned by Æ’s AI, and the final couplet of bitersweet nosedrip synth in ’Wanguila’ and the skudged yet effervescent murk and diffracted flow of ‘4 Fantasias’ leave us in no doubt to Brandão’s outré brilliance

Previously hailed for his rangy, curiously emotive contributions to the RS Produções group shows ‘Saúde Em
1º Lugar’ and ‘Bagdad Style’, DJ Narciso answers the call to soundtrack choreography by Catarina Miranda with
10 minutes of sci-fi style tension-building and syncopated propulsion.
Like DJ N Fox’s ’15 Barras’, Narciso takes the opportunity to stretch out, stealthily raising adrenaline levels
with panic alarm squawks and a gargling acidic synth that passes out into skeletal percussion and a haunted
warehouse throb in a way that you might compare to a starry-eyed Mala production for a John Carpenter
score.

This is a presentation of Xexa's different sensibilities as a composer, musician and sound designer, mapping what are in effect her initial explorations with voice, rhythms, synths, ambience, ever searching for an organic final result. As a student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London) between 2019 and a still fresh 2023, she presented in her third year a portfolio that included what we can now listen as "Clarinet Mood", the final track on "Vibrações De Prata". Her intention was to «study the feeling of listening to music as an environment one inhabits and not as a sound that follows you throughout the day. Walk into, instead of listening to, an ambience». With no previous clarinet training, Xexa explores its palpable sound as a physical doorway to this realm.

Four other tracks ("Assim", "Nha Dêdê", "Fragmented Breath" and "Prendes Nh'Alma") formed part of what she named the 2021 Sound Calendar. Out of a (natural) total of 12 compositions, these four connect with other intimate moments to tell a broader story, one of fragility, «like a flower about to bloom, we can detect first glimpses of colour and form but can't yet divine its final form».

This sort of imaginative sonic micro-management can also be found on "Libelula", where the synth attempts to recreate the beating of a dragonfly's wings. Minute details are a major feature in jewelry, an art Xexa studied in her native Lisbon's António Arroio school. Free spirited as she is, Lisbon is merely a geographical location where she was born, no particular feeling of being Portuguese attached to her position in the world. So far, Xexa's origins in São Tomé and Príncipe and a prolonged stint in London (it feels prolonged, at such a young age) are the two other major environments that form her experience as a human being but also as an artist. We are extremely proud to have been able to access truly special creative, intimate moments and help bring out into the world this physical manifestation of beautiful contemporary music.
