She's back, the gloves are off and she is coming out swinging. Tami Neilson won't be staying New Zealand's secret for much longer. For the past decade, the Canadian-born, New Zealand-based singer/songwriter has been the queen of her adopted homeland's country and roots music scenes. She has picked up a handful of Best Country Album awards at the New Zealand Music Awards and won the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll for excellence in songwriting. With her new album, Sassafrass!, Neilson takes a giant step forward. On this 11-track knock-out, she places a heavier emphasis on soul music without abandoning her country and rockabilly roots. Neilson conjures up a wonderfully retro style that sounds like it could be a lost gem from the late '50s or early '60s; however, beneath the classic veneer are frank, highly relevant lyrics. Sassafrass, a slang word for a sassy person who isn't afraid to speak her mind, serves as a perfect title for this album. The songs, Neilson divulges, reflect her developing a low tolerance for bullsh*t after years of encountering sexism in her life. They were also influenced by her being a mother of two young boys as well as by the death of her father, who led the family's band, the Neilsons, which was popular in Canada during the '90s. Neilson characterizes her new album as a mouthy lovechild of the current social climate and my own experiences as a woman, mother and daughter.

Beside Trawbreaga Bay, in Co. Donegal, on the north coast of Ireland, in an old schoolhouse, with a suitcase full of hired recording gear, Oisin Leech strums gently on an acoustic guitar and watches the tide pull the water away from the ancient inlet. The thickness of Oisin’s voice soothes the room as the sound waves bounce around in the land where his ancestors still live and still wander.

With a musical history that led Leech from the street punk bands of yesteryear through an ongoing stint with folk duo The Lost Brothers, he found himself for the first time working on songs to sing alone. In his mind, the songs became imagined vignette films playing behind closed, guitar eyes. After writing nearly 40 new songs in this fashion, Leech wrote “October Sun” which would become the foundation for his debut solo record, Cold Sea.

Cold Sea was produced by guitarist/songwriter Steve Gunn. Leech dreamt of making the record in Donegal Ireland, a county significant to him because it is the home of his ancestors. Pitching this idea to Gunn sparked the first of several serendipities circling the Cold Sea sessions - Gunn had always wanted to visit Donegal to connect with his own familial roots in the region.

Cold Sea is perhaps most notable for its tremendous warmth. Each song was recorded in a few takes and adorned gently with synthesizers and guitar from Gunn. Several songs feature contributions on the upright bass by Bob Dylan band stalwart Tony Garnier. M. Ward plays guitar on October Sun and there are strings by Roisín McGrory and bouzouki by the legendary Dónal Lunny throughout. It is a friendship record but even at its most collaborative, Cold Sea remains centered around the humble acoustic guitar and wool blanket vocals of Leech.

Leszek Mozdzer, one of the most recognizable personalities of the Polish jazz scene and Holland Baroque Society, an orchestra specialising in performing old music with the use of ancient instruments with the mastery of historical practices. The orchestra is recognized in the world for its unique and fresh approach to historical music and its beautiful sound. The concerts of Holland Baroque Society emanate with an extraordinary energy of inspirational relations among the artists, and a particular involvement of the band in their musical performance. Leszek Mozdzer and Holland Baroque Society, i.e. Bach fundamentals and jazz temperament, have a surprisingly great deal in common, and their new, especially written repertoire is another stage of a consequently implemented artistic vision blurring the boundaries between classical music and jazz.

Leszek Mozdzer on the cooperation with Holland Baroque - ''I suddenly found myself among people who are very similar to me; among people who sincerely seek beauty and truly love music. During the rehearsals it turned out that each and every sound is important, that each and every second of the composition revealed itself causing our bursts of natural joy. We discussed the performance of all the parts in advance, and then, performed them in a totally different way to what we have arranged. The ancient magic of music prompted us with such suggestive solutions that even discussions were no longer needed. We just played the music and smiled, we smiled and played once again. The music flow carried us away, the ideas appeared suddenly but evidently, and our joy became an integral part of the composition.''

Album ''Earth Particles'' was released in 2017. Certified ''Gold Album'' Award in Poland.
