Hiding in Place, the new EP from Philadelphia's Queen ofJeans, opens with the springy pluck of a single note on electricguitar, like a ping from a satellite waiting for a response ina long, quiet expanse. Then, Miri Devora's voice atop guitarand drums: "Hiding in place, conjure your face/Don't wannalose my mind."This is the title track's invitation to a four-song study of loneliness,alienation, and the unraveling that comes with thosestates, but it's also bookended with moments of levity: joyand romance burst through on second track "Why Hide," aresponse of sorts to the title track's cloistered anxiety. Devorawrote the songs at the start of the pandemic in March 2020when she had just been laid off from her job of almost 10years. Her partner, guitarist Mattie Glass, worked 11 hourshifts at a grocery store, so Devora was alone in their apartmentfor months on end. When they were written, theseweren't intended to be pandemic-specific."While these aren't `pandemic songs,' they carry that weight,"says Devora. "There's that sense of loneliness and evenlonging that I think for many have gone hand-in-hand withthe pandemic. Hiding in Place is like hiding within these wallsthat we were confined to, but it's also about hiding withinyourself and not being able to necessarily express any kindof fears or desires you have."This is part of what makes Hiding in Place such an aptcollection for this moment: with this EP, which follows theband's 2019 LP If you're not afraid, I'm not afraid, hiding canbe a safe release or a painful suppression, depending on thecontext. Following the release of Bartees Strange's stunning debut Live Forever, Bartees and his band took a trip to Conshohocken PA to record an electric set of album tracks and other songs from his catalog with Producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Tigers Jaw). Theperformance has been pressed on limited color vinyl and offers a new look at one of the most exciting songwriters in the game today. The performance covers most of Bartees Strange's2020 LP, an album of the year for that year fromRolling Stone, Pitchfork, The New Yorker, Stereogum and more. Tracked only months after that record's release, this live set perfectly encapsulates what those outlets found so intriguing about Strange - tying a "dizzying blend of genre work" together as Stereogum said into an album that celebrates it's myriad influences. The live record closes out with Bartees' coverof "Lemonworld" by the National, a staple in his catalog from his Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy EP of National covers that was released on the band's label prior to the release of Live Forever.

All Again. That's the title of the upcoming full-length record from Philadelphia's Queen of Jeans. The LP tracks an entire arc that, by the final hazy vibrato wash of "Do It All Again," bleeds back into the ambient first seconds of the record. "Thought I'd call tonight, hear how you're dealing," Miriam Devora sings to a distant lover on opener "All My Friends" in a neon-lit, melancholy tenor, the precise sound of lonesome love. The full band joins her in a beautiful night time sway, but it's still no use: "I got all my friends around, but I'm not home til I'm alone with you."The rest of the record follows this relationship as it tumbles through loneliness and longing, to elation and joy, to pain and anger, and finally to its foggy close, where Devora admits, "If I got to do it all again, I'd find you there like I did back then."Releasing on Memory Music, All Again is principally an enveloping, rich indie-rock record, changing dance partners between cheek-to-cheek '60s pop sweetness, '90s alt-rock dirt, spacious and pained emo, and the songcraft and melodicism of the sharpest acoustic singer-songwriter acts. Devora (vocals, guitar, keys) and Matheson Glass (lead guitar, piano) took extra care this time to create a Queen of Jeans full-length that reflected in sound and structure the emotional depths they were exploring.It's the first time since their 2015 debut, Dig Yourself, that they've had a full band, with drummer Patrick Wall and bassist Andrew Nitz, to build with.
