Raised Wrong has been a band that has existed as an idea between four old friends for well over a decade. In 2023, Ryan Murphy and John Pettibone (undertow) recruited Ryan Donoghue (ensign) and Dave Itow (beyond Repair) to round out a lineup so that Undertow could play the Indecision Records 30th Anniversary show. That weekend ignited the spark that would eventually lead them back to the idea of this band the following year. With renewed vigor, they wrote six songs and booked studio time at Buzzbomb Studios with Paul Miner. Although not necessarily influenced by their former bands, that history certainly has its fingerprints across the soundscape of these songs.

Matt Weider, former guitarist for the now defunct New Jersey band MOUTHPIECE, had relocated to Louisville, KY, where he spent time playing in GUILT and the ENKINDELS before settling into his role as frontman for AUTOMATIC. It was during his stay in the ENKINDELS where him and drummer Thommy Browne (BY THE GRACE OF GOD) talked about and decided that they were going to start a straight-edge band. A short time later they recorded their first 7”. The band lasted a few years and although they recorded several EPs, a full-length release did not materialize before their eventual break up. Crisp, heavy, melodic, upbeat, and full of hooks, AMENITY formed in 1986 amongst a chaotic, and often times violent, San Diego punk scene. They are regarded as that city’s first straight-edge hardcore band, leading a positive charge that would be influential and respected for years to come. The band (comprised of vocalist Mike Down, guitarist Tim Gonzales, bass player Sergio Hernandez, and drummer Baruch Kellman) quickly built a loyal following of energetic, angst-filled youth, seeking to collectively aspire to lives not represented by the increasingly nihilistic, local punk scene, or by that decade’s synth-pop filled radios and TVs. From São Paulo, the largest metro area in the southern hemisphere, hails Point OF NO Return. Founded in 1996, this three-singer Brazilian band has long carried the vegan, straight-edge banner in the tropics, singing about political issues and playing a metallic, mosh-infused brand of hardcore. After releasing two albums, one EP, and extensively touring South America and Europe in the early 2000s, the band went on hiatus in 2006. At the point the band stopped playing, they had written nine new songs, which they planned to eventually record and release as a third album. However, life got in the way as members formed families and some moved away from São Paulo. Slowly, they began to progress toward finishing and recording the new songs: instruments were recorded in Brazil in 2017, lyrics were written between 2019 and 2024, and vocals were recorded between 2023 and 2024. The result is Point OF NO Return’s new album, The Language Of Refusal, whose title refers to hardcore punk as a transnational community, a form of art, and a means of expression for those discontent with the way things are. With songs addressing some of the most pressing issues today, such as deforestation and labor exploitation in the Amazon rainforest, the inequities of global warming, the rise of global conservative populism, and the challenges of organizing dissenting political movements, the album delivers these topics in a mix of late-’90s mosh core, SLAYER-esque riffs, gang vocals, and hints of Napalm Death.

Undertow can be considered one of the founding fathers of the straight-edge hardcore scene in Seattle and this year we celebrate the 30th anniversary of their seminal record, At Both Ends. Getting their start in 1990, the band toured the States several times as well as a tour in Europe in 1995 right before they decided to call it quits. At Both Ends is their only full-length and it came out when the band was in full swing. Originally released on the Washington state label Excursion Records, this is the first pressing since it originally came out in the mid ’90s.
