When the truly unique band PSYCHOTIC WALTZ disbanded in 1997, there was a gap that could only be filled with the creation of DEADSOUL TRIBE in 2001. Singer, flautist and figurehead Devon Graves, also known as Buddy Lackey, had moved to Vienna in the meantime because of a relationship, where he found suitable musicians for DEADSOUL TRIBE. On the debut “Deadsoul Tribe”, Davon Graves still played some instruments himself, but they were already a band with four members. Even though the style may differ from PSYCHOTIC WALTZ in some respects, the target group is automatically defined. And even a little broader, because alongside metal and prog you can also hear influences from Tool. The very organic-sounding album received very good reviews and was readily accepted by the fans. The band then played at the Prog Power Europe Festival in Holland. It is astonishing that DEADSOUL TRIBE‘s albums have not yet been released on vinyl, especially since the PSYCHOTIC WALTZ 2024 catalog has been reissued (Inside Out/Sony Music). Golden Core are now closing this gap with the first two albums, mastered for vinyl of course and with a printed insert. The LPs are limited to 300 copies, which are sure to sell out quickly. The Munich-rooted band SIEGES EVEN's debut album 'Life Cycle' (1988) was already a culture shock. At a loss for words, journalists tried to describe progressive thrash with terms like “jazz metal”, while metal fans reacted with either enthusiasm or a big question mark over their heads. Regardless, everyone understood that this was one of Germany's finest musical bands. Two years later, they did even better with the successor 'Steps'...The thrash element had been reduced to almost nothing, but they had ruthlessly shown that they had become even more competent in recent months. The band, still young at the time, was playing at a level unprecedented in European heavy metal. Only in America have Watchtower or Dream Theater delivered such complicated material. In good Rush tradition, 'Steps' features a long song on side A (25 minutes!), while side B has five tracks and an outro. The track "Corridors" is another example of the young musicians' elusive abilities. 'Steps' is more independent overall than 'Life Cycle', which was still very reminiscent of Watchtower. Thanks to the vocals of Franz Herde, who was no longer present on its successor, the first chapter of Sieges Even closes here. 'Steps' was recorded in 1990 at Lakeside Studios by Charlie Bauerfeind, now a well-known producer. Despite the demanding material, the album was a success. Today, 'Steps' can be found in many lists when it comes to major prog metal or prog rock albums. It had not been available since the original Steamhammer / SPV pressings! The CD and LP have been mastered separately, so that each format can deliver its own particular sound. TBC

When four young musicians from Munich founded the thrash band Sodom in the early eighties, nobody could have guessed that they would deliver a milestone for European progressive metal with their debut album 'Life Cycle' in 1988.Changes could already be heard on 'Steps' (1990) and on 'A Sense Of Change' in 1991 they managed to get fans of prog and art rock on board for the first time. With the much more melodic singer Jogi Kaiser, who is still active in musicals today, and a reduced metal component, this balancing act was achieved in an impressive way. It was the first Sieges Even album that was no longer released as an LP by the label at the time (Steamhammer/SPV), but only on CD.'A Sense Of Change' was very successful in certain circles, but the band parted ways with guitarist Markus Steffen. The following two albums deviated from the previous style, but the reunion took place in 2005, producing 'The Art Of Navigating By The Stars' and 'Paramount'. The chapter was closed in 2007 with the live album 'Playgrounds'. Markus Steffen and singer Arno Menses founded Subsignal, who are still successfully active today. 'A Sense Of Change' is finally being re-released in 2024, with the statement "for the first time on vinyl" standing out in particular. The material was first remastered, then mastered separately for CD and LP. The booklet and LP insert contain images from the original release as well as liner notes by guitarist Markus Steffen. However, the line-up carousel was to turn again and HADES and WATCHTOWER singer Alan Tecchio and bassist Kevin Bolembach (later SEVEN WITCHES, JACK FROST and others) came on board. In 1991, the debut "Preface" was released on Grand Slamm Records, in Europe on Steamhammer/SPV. At the time, the band's doom metal leanings must have puzzled many fans of HADES and WATCHTOWER, while fans of this style remained ignorant at a time without the Internet. It is astonishing that certain trademarks of HADES can still be found in the music of NON-FICTION (see also the 1995 reunion album by HADES). In 1992, the second album "In The Know" was released, which is considered a fan favourite and was only released on CD at the time. Once again, the cover artwork is reminiscent of the art of Hipgnosis (Pink Floyd, UFO etc.). Many fans have been waiting for an LP version, which is now available 32 years later.After the release, Non-Fiction successfully toured with Savatage and Overkill, where they could also be seen in Europe. Both HADES and WATCHTOWER (with Alan Tecchio) are - sporadically - active again today and quite a few fans hope that Non-Fiction will also make another appearance. The musical continuation, albeit a little more modern, is currently Dan Lorenzo‘s band PATRIARCHS IN BLACK, which is successful in the USA. TBC

In 2021, Golden Core/ZYX Music released the rarities compilation "Sound & Action - Rare German Hardrock And Metal, Vol. 1“. While doing research for this sampler, we also came across Oblivion, with their now rare CD called "Reflections“, via the long-defunct Face Music label. After agreeing on one song for the compilation, the idea came up to release this gem on vinyl for the first time. The four tracks were remastered by Neudi (Manilla Road, Trance, Griffin, etc.) and then optimized for the medium vinyl by Vadim Kulin (zyx Studio, Merenberg).

Before singer Katon DePena‘s ongoing reunion in 2000, HIRAX from Los Angeles only recorded one album, two EPs and a demo. The latter showed the band still heavily influenced by NWOBHM acts such as Jaguar. The debut album “Raging Violence” (Metal Blade, 1985) is still polarizing today! It was probably one of the most extreme records in 1985, but this was at the expense of the songs and tight interplay. Although they got their act together on the following EP “Hate, Fear And Power”, there was never another album. After another EP in 7” single format, this phase of HIRAX, which is now partly revered as a cult, was over. In 2013, four members “from the old days” recorded five HIRAX tracks with singer Rob Perkins. The demo track “Born In The Streets” was also included on an album for the first time, with the then second guitarist Bob Savage on board. But why these new recordings? Bassist and founding member Gary Monardo explains that they make perfect sense: “The reason we re-recorded the Hirax songs is that the recordings back then were faster than we intended, which washed out the sheer heaviness of the riffs. We wanted these recordings to be tight, clean, precise and extremely heavy. Since Katon‘s vocals were considered polarizing by some fans, we wanted fans to hear the songs with a completely different vocal dynamic.”The three new tracks show that nothing has been forgotten. Scott Owen‘s riffs are and remain “signature”. The band broke up before a possible release in 2015 and only a few fans knew about the recordings. Attaxe were founded in 1985 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, by singer Juan Ricardo. They released several demos in the late 80s that made it to the top of many college radio playlists, including 'Out Of The Storm' in 1986 and 'Metal Messiah' in 1987. In 1988 a side project demo called 'Zyclone' was released featuring guitarist Gregg Perry and in 1989 Attaxe released 'Are You Ready?' which got a lot of radio airplay. In 1990 Attaxe appeared with 'Pedal To The Metal' on the compilation 'Heavy Artillery', which is still popular today. Attaxe disbanded in 1990 when singer Juan Ricardo joined Torment, a band that famously changed its name to Ritual. In 1993 they recorded the album 'Trials Of Torment' for Massacre Records, which also established Juan Ricardo as the perfect US metal singer in Europe. After years of being asked for demo recordings, Juan released a compilation that included the demos entitled '20 Years the Hard Way' in 2006. Attaxe officially reformed in 2019 and signed with Pure Steel Records, reissuing '20 Years the Hard Way' in 2020. Their first album 'Braving The Tempest' will be released in September 2024 on Golden Core/ZYX. Juan Ricardo is one of the few truly typical US metal singers. From the remains of the true metal project SEDUCTION, which was initiated by a management, a real band emerged in 2004: VIRON. In contrast to SEDUCTION, VIRON sounded more mature and down-to-earth. Influences from US metal and NWOBHM mixed with European metal, which was something special for a German group in 2004. Traditional heavy metal was slowly getting back on its feet after grunge, crossover and gothic, and VIRON were early on in this development. The first EP released by the band, which was already called 'NWOGHM' (New Wave Of German Heavy Metal), was a huge hit in the underground and they played a few shows without a record deal, including at the Headbangers Open Air near Hamburg. This got the labels interested and in 2006 they decided on the Greek company Sonic Age (aka. Cult Metal Classics). The EP was expanded to include more songs recorded in the same studio (Kohlekeller Studio) and became an album. After consistently fantastic album reviews, they performed at the Sworbrothers Festival, United Metalheads and with bands like Sabaton, Custard and Solemnity.VIRON switched to Metal Heaven Records in 2007 and released the successful follow-up 'Ferrum Gravis' in 2008. The slogan at the time, "Underground Metal for the masses", fits like a glove, because the powerful but naturally produced album bridges the gap between the underground scene and, let's call it "conventional heavy metal". Insiders might say "between Lauda-Königshofen and Wacken". This is also shown by the skilful cover version of the Manilla Road classic "Dreams Of Eschaton". Unfortunately, Viron disbanded a few months after the release of 'Ferrum Gravis', but the band became a springboard for three members of Viron who later appeared in Manilla Road, Trance, Savage Grace, Roxxcalibur, Bonfire and Jameson Raid, among others. In contrast to SEDUCTION, VIRON immediately sounded more mature and down-to-earth. Influences of US metal and NWOBHM were mixed with European metal, which was something special for a German band in 2004. After grunge, crossover and gothic, traditional heavy metal was slowly getting back on its feet and VIRON were early participants in this development. The first EP released by the band, which also bore the name NWOGHM (New Wave Of German Heavy Metal), hit the underground like a bomb and they played a few shows without a record deal, including at the Headbangers Open Air near Hamburg. This called the labels onto the scene and in 2006 they decided to sign with the Greek company Sonic Age (aka. Cult Metal Classics). The EP was expanded with additional songs, which were recorded in the same studio (Kohlekeller Studio), and became an album. In order to stand out from the true metal groups and all their dragons and wizards on the colourful covers, they decided on a very simple design and kept the title NWOGHM. However, the cover version of the US metal classic “Run For Tomorrow” by Exxplorer remained exclusive to the EP (but is now included on the LP on Golden Core). Fantastic album reviews throughout were followed by appearances at the Sworbrothers Festival, United Metalheads and with bands such as Sabaton, Custard and Solemnity. The album‘s intro, “Sander”, is considered cult and is still a topic of conversation today. VIRON switched to Metal Heaven Records in 2007 and released the successful follow-up “Ferrum Gravis” in 2008, before the band gradually fell by the wayside due to the success of the band ROXXCALIBUR (three members of VIRON), who were active at the same time. Due to many requests from fans, NWOGHM is now finally available on vinyl. The double LP in gatefold (liner notes, many photos and illustrations) has been remastered for this medium and contains the SEDUCTION demos as well as other bonus material. Rhabstallion belong to the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands and are known to insiders as they released a now rare single (Day To Day) in 1981. The melodic heavy rock would have deserved more attention, but at least a live recording was made by the BBC. In 1994, all the recordings were compiled on CD by the Vinyl Tap label. The community was surprised when the band reappeared in 2019 performing acclaimed live shows and released their first album "Back In The Saddle" on Golden Core. In 1983, the melodic hard rock and metal band TOX started up in the Stuttgart area, releasing albums in 1985 and 1986. The brains behind the band were the highly talented guitarist and singer Werner Dannemann, who is now internationally renowned as a blues musician, and drummer Peter Garattoni (sadly recently deceased) from the group Eulenspygel, who later played with several heavy metal bands from GAMA Musikverlag (Veto, Maniac), but was also active with John Lawton (Uriah Heep, Les Humphries Singers) in Rebel. Bassist Wolfgang Kallert (only on 'Prince Of Darkness') joined the cult group Volks-Musik in 1973 and can be heard on the album 'Morgens um 7 - Abends um 8'. It's clear that you shouldn't expect flawless, merciless heavy metal from TOX. As the album title and the cover might suggest just that, the melodic hard rock disc may have reached the wrong audience in 1985. Even if the title track could be labelled as melodic epic metal today and would also have suited Zed Yago well, it is more of a hard, but also very melodic record between hard rock, AOR, as well as powerful classic rock and German metal. If you listen carefully, you'll even notice that TOX sounded quite unique and didn't conform to the standardised sound of the time. In heavy metal communities, both albums enjoy cult status in South America and in some Eastern European countries. Little is known about the highly talented band TONIC, who hail from the Stuttgart region. Their only LP "This Way" was released in 1980 on the Peak label, and was recorded at Sypgel Studios in Kirchheim/Teck. Peak was one of the labels run by Peter Garattoni and Günther Marek, both active musicians with Eulenspygel. As is often the case, Achim Bosch (Sinner, Iris, Sphinx, Floating Opera, etc.) was responsible for the mixing. After the release of the album, most of the band members returned to the Tiefste Provinz line-up (one album). Only saxophonist Michael Draskowitsch remained active for many years as a session musician on various albums. If you look on the Internet at fan or collector sites devoted to krautrock and prog rock, you'll find many glowing reviews of the highly demanding LP "This Way". Today, you can't find an original in reasonable condition for less than 100 euros either.For this CD and LP reissue, an original was dubbed by Patrick Engel and then remastered by Andreas "Neudi" Neuderth.
