Naming his third album for Reprise The Second Coming may have been pushing the outrageousness a bit far, but considering his previously LP was titled King Of Rock And Roll it was clear that humility was not Little Richards strongest at tribute. After the 1984 release of his autobiography, The Quasar Of Rock And Roll, Little Richard decided to come out of retirement. It had been seven years since his last record, the gospel focused God's Beautiful City, and over a decade from his 1970s return album run on the Reprise label (The Rill Thing, King Of Rock And Roll, and The Second Coming, plus the one that Reprise shelved at the time, Southern Child). or the new album, Richard went overseas to record in London with a powerhouse band including Billy Preston, Muscle Shoals guitarist Travis Wammack, bassist Jesse Boyce, and drummer James Stroud with producer Stuart Colman at the helm. Warner Bros., unleashed Lifetime Friend in 1986. With ten tracks of rock 'n' roll mixed with spiritual lyrics (and even an early rap appearance), the release was another return to form. His third coming, one could say. The album's blistering opener "Great Gosh A'Mighty" (co-written with Billy Preston) would even be recut by Richard for the film Down And Out In Beverly Hills, nearly cracking the Top 40. Two other tracks, "Operator" and "Somebody's Comin'," would make chart appearances in the UK. As Dahl writes in his liners, "Rock 'n' roll never had a better friend than Little Richard Penniman. He devoted most of his life to it. Lifetime Friend was his last great recorded statement, and even if Long Tall Sally, Miss Molly, and Lucille weren't in the choir, Richard gave the album his heavenly best." Lifetime Friend is back as a 12" long player, and pressed on turquoise vinyl with a printed inner sleeve that includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.

Reflecting on The Flatlanders in 1990, Jimmy Dale Gilmore said, "The band probably has a higher reputation now than it ever did. Every time Butch Hancock and Joe Ely and I go out on the road, people want to know about The Flatlanders. We always say it was more a legend than a band." And against all odds, the legend has grown. By the time the first compilation of Flatlanders' work appeared in England in 1980, they'd been apart for seven years, and another ten before their music was available in the US. Sort of... Recorded in 1972 and scheduled for release the following year, All American Music was put on hold and went unissued, save for a few copies that were released on 8-Track. It took a 1980 UK compilation to collect all of the known Flatlanders material, with a now out-of-print German collection unearthing one more. Now, Omnivore Recordings brings all known Flatlanders tracks back. The Fabulous Sounds Of The Pacific Northwest [40th Anniversary Edition] / 40th anniversary reissue of their classic debut, remix from original 8-track tapes by Scott McCaughey - Original 15-track LP available on Limited Edition Turquoise Vinyl, double-CD/Digital expanded with 14 bonus tracks - On tour in 2024, including an appearance at Wilco's Solid Sound festival Formed (conceptually) by Scott McCaughey and Chuck Carroll in Seattle, WA in 1981, The Young Fresh Fellows, with the addition of Chuck's mad-drumming cousin Tad Hutchison, began work on their debut effort in 1983. Friend Conrad Uno volunteered to produce and record the trio in his basement/garage Egg Studios (no money exchanged hands), and Uno's fledgling label PopLlama Products insisted on pushing the record out into the world, beyond a small circle of friends. Starting with the magical success of this album, PopLlama would become a fixture in the still-floundering Seattle music scene and the home of bands including Fastbacks, The Posies, Dharma Bums, and The President Of The United States Of America (whose Uno-produced debut would go on to be certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA.) Inspired by a 1960's single from Pacific Northwest Bell to promote tourism, the cover plays homage to that release, with sound bites as "narrator" from that original record (and now, either thankfully or regretfully, omitted from this cut-to-the-rock'n'roll-chase remix). The Fellows suddenly found themselves darlings of college radio, with an enthusiastic following, and admired by their peers. A bouncy, punky, jangly, and weirdly self-referential collection of songs, The Fabulous Sounds Of The Pacific Northwest became a favorite of anyone who came upon it, including early proponents like Paul Westerberg, Ira Robbins, NRBQ, Rolling Stone, and Peter Buck. Now, for it's 40th Anniversary, YFF co-founder and songwriter/vocalist Scott McCaughey (R.E.M., The Minus 5, The Baseball Project) has remixed the album to (re)introduce it to the world. The idea was to put 40 years of music-making experience into the mix (push up the bass fader), without losing the naivet and wonder that fueled it's initial reception. The original album's 15 tracks will be pressed on limited-edition, opaque Turquoise vinyl. The (now) double-CD and Digital programs include a bonus disc - Merry Croutons Mr. Gulp Gulp - an ultra-rare party-in-the-studio 1984 cassette release of about 200 copies. Back on the road in 2024, The Young Fresh Fellows, with longtime line-up of Scott, Jim Sangster, Kurt Bloch, and newcomer John Perrin of NRBQ, will be crossing the country - from their hometown of Seattle though to Wilco's Solid Sound festival in Massachusetts. The Fabulous Sounds Of The Pacific Northwest will be ringing out on the stages and turntables of America!
