THE OCEAN have traditionally been releasing parallel instrumental versions of all of their albums, which offer a different perspective and often different mix as compared to the vocal versions. „Heliocentral“ is the corresponding instrumental to their eponymous 2010 album „Heliocentric“, now released for the first time ever on vinyl! „Heliocentric“ was the first album with current vocalist Loïc Rossetti, a game changer in the band's history, which saw the band venture into calmer territories as compared to its predecessor: the album is defined not by walls of guitars, but by careful orchestrations of piano, upright bass, strings and textural electronics. Conceptually, „Heliocentric“ is a comprehensive critique of the legacy of christianity: the iconic opening track „Firmament“, still a fan's favourite, starts off with original text from the bible; while „Ptolemy Was Wrong“ and „Catharsis of A Heretic“ tackle Gallilei's and Copernicus' discoveries that Earth is not at the center of the universe, for which Giordano Bruno was burnt at the stake. The album concludes with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and considerations by Richard Dawkins', the spearhead of modern day's aetheism, in the epic 14 minutes closing track duality „The Origin Of Species“ and „The Origin Of God“. Since 2001, the Berlin-based musician collective THE OCEAN have released 10 critically acclaimed studio albums, and a split EP with Japanese post-rock legends Mono. With an ever-changing lineup of various on- and off-stage musicians and visual artists, the relentlessly touring group have become well known for their immense, mind-expanding live shows, which they have carried into the most remote corners of the globe, from Siberian squats to colonial theatres in Ecuador. Over the course of their storied career, The Ocean have toured with Opeth, Mastodon, Mono, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Anathema, Between The Buried And Me and Devin Townsend, and have appeared on major festivals including Roskilde, Dour, Pukkelpop, Roadburn, Wacken, With Full Force, Summer Slaughter, Summer Breeze and Graspop. The band's own Pelagic Records has also become one of Europe's leading labels for post-rock and post-metal, with a catalog of 120 releases since 2009. “The Ocean do for earth science class what Mastodon did for Melville: make learning brutal", Decibel wrote about 2007's Precambrian, Revolver describing it as a “Teutonic paean to Earth's geology“. 2013's seminal Pelagial, described as “a filmic ode to shifting moods, dichotomous influences and the musical personification of sinking towards the planet's deepest underwater points“ by Rock Sound, was a milestone for the band, and their most conceptual work to date, and was ranked #3 at LoudWire's “Best Metal Albums Of 2013”, and #5 in About.com's “2013 Best Heavy Metal Albums“. The „centrics“-albums saw the introduction of current vocalist Loïc Rossetti to the band's lineup, a game changer in their 17 years history. „Anthropocentric“ is heavier than its same - year predecessor „Heliocentric“, with the crushing 15-minutes opening track duality „The Grand Inquisitor“ part I and II followed by „She Was The Universe“, one of the most-streamed THE OCEAN tracks to date. Conceptually, „Heliocentric“ and „Anthropocentric“ are a comprehensive critique of the legacy of christianity: While „Heliocentric“ approaches the topic in a historical-chronological way, the main focus of „Anthropocentric“ is the „Grand Inquisitor“-chapter in Dostoyevsky's world-famous novel „The Brothers Karamazov“, spread out over 3 tracks of the album. Other songs like the serene „The Almightiness Contradiction“ take up ideas by Richard Dawkins, the spearhead of modern day's aetheism. German post-metal formation THE Ocean will release their new album "Holocene" in May 2023, as usual there is an instrunemtal album available as well. With Holocene, The Ocean add the new and final chapter in their paleontologically inspired album series. This time, the hardness of the collective is extended by some electronic dimensions. Founded at the beginning of the millennium, the group of musicians around guitarist Robin Stapps has not lost its intensity even after more than 20 years. The Ocean come together each time with a shared vision of boundless sonic exploration, never standing still, the band enjoys a stellar reputation in the genres of post-rock, progressive metal and even hardcore. Robin Staps commented on the final work in the Paleontological album series: "Holocene is an appendix to the 2 Phanerozoic albums and Precambrian, or the final and concluding chapter, making it a quadrilogy if you will. It deals with the Holocene, the most recent and shortest chapter in Earth's history, but essentially it's an album about fear, alienation, the loss of reason and critical thinking, the rise of conspiracy theories and the deconstruction of values in modernity." On the creation process and electronic basis of the new tracks, he adds: "The writing process of every album we've ever done started with me coming up with a guitar riff, a drum beat or a vocal idea. This album is different because every single song is based on a musical idea originally written by Peter (Voigtmann, synthesizer). He came up with these amazing synth parts that sounded great even in pre-production, and he sent me some of these raw, unfinished ideas in the middle of "Lockdown 2020"... and even though it was all electronic, it had this definite Ocean vibe to it. I immediately wanted to pick up my guitar.... And I did, and it wasn't long before we had an inspiring creative exchange that went in completely unforeseen but very exciting directions." For fans of Massive Attack, Lorn, Archive, Trentemöller, early Moderat, Portishead, Isis, Mastodon, Katatonia, The Pineapple Thief LP packaging: gatefold + metallic pantone inks + UV spot gloss + printed inner sleeve

The Berliners present an unusual live album that is a testimony of strange times: their Phanerozoic concept album performed live in its entirety at a time when no shows were happening anywhere in the world.
On September 25, 2020, in the middle of the global pandemic, The Ocean released their 9th studio album Phanerozoic II, the concluding episode of a conceptual trilogy that began with Precambrian 13 years before, with no end of lockdowns in sight, the band decided to thank their fans for the support with 2 streaming concerts, performing both Phanerozoic albums in their entirety.
The performance formed part of the digital edition of Roadburn Festival, aptly named Roadburn Redux. Both shows couldn't have been more different: where the first part boasts with a pompous, mesmerizing lighting production on a big stage, the 2nd part is quite the opposite: intimate, almost cosy, focused on musicianship rather than performance. A stripped down setup in a dark barn, with moody, minimal but not any less efficient lighting.
“We wanted to give people 2 totally different experiences”, says band leader Robin Staps. “In Bremen, we had the chance to record a proper Ocean live show, the way people know us. We played facing towards the front of the stage, to an invisible crowd, essentially to a huge empty room... but we knew people were watching, even if we didn't see them. There was the same rush of adrenaline right before going on stage as you get before going on at any big open air festival... maybe with a little extra anxiety added, because knowing that so many people are watching you without being able to see them yourself was super weird.”
Phanerozoic Live is a live album like no other – it is a live album that was recorded in a cultural vacuum, a bizarre time that we will remember for the rest of our lives: a time when the world as we knew it suddenly stopped spinning. It is a live album that goes without all the qualities that we usually appreciate about a live album: without the sounds of a cheering, exited crowd... but it is the very absence of this, it is the eery silence between the songs that reminds us of what we miss most, and that gives these recordings a rare intensity and power.

This is the instrumental version of THE OCEANS new album "Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic", which is available separately. The immediacy of Phanerozoic can be attributed to the band working out every detail and testing every song live in the rehearsal room prior to heading into the studio; The instrumental version emphazises an album, which gains its heaviness not from the surface but from below, not so much from the vocals, but from the underlying riffage, bass and drumming, from analog synths merging with electric guitars. Phanerozoic will see the light of day on November 2nd and comes in 9mm spine Gatefold with UV spot gloss! This is the ltd. moss coloured edition.
