Biggest Tip! Limited Edition LP. Deluxe 180-Gram Reissue. Special Gatefold Edition Including Original Artwork. Few will need introduction to the work of Pharoah Sanders. He is a titan with few equivalents in histories of free and spiritual jazz. The creator of some of the most important and singular records in these fields, Sanders, who was once described by Ornette Coleman as “probably the best tenor player in the world”, is equally noted for his work with artists like John Coltrane, as a member of his groundbreaking final quintet, Alice Coltrane, Leon Thomas, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Sun Ra, often rendering a remarkable influence over the results.

RELEASED TWO YEARS AFTER THE DEATH OF MENTOR, JOHN COLTRANE. MUSICALLY, THE ALBUM HEADS TOWARDS THE VERY EDGES OF EASTERN MUSIC AND OFT STRAYS OUTSIDE THE LINES OF WHAT COULD BE CALLED JAZZ BUT IS A WONDERFUL RECORDING, FULL OF DEPTH OF VISION AND HEARTFELT SOUL.

180 gram Vinyl Edition. Gatefold Cover. Recorded in New York City and Los Angeles, California, and was released in 1973 by Impulse! Records. Wisdom Through Music, with its smaller line-up - Sanders is joined by flutist James Branch, pianist Joe Bonner, bassist Cecil McBee, drummer Norman Connors, and percussionists Badal Roy, James Mtume, and Lawrence Killian. - consists of five tracks. Most notable is "High Life," on which Sanders emulates the West African style of music with roiling, celebratory drumming and singing, and killer flute playing. "Love Is Everywhere" is a shorter version of what is now a Sanders performance standard; it appeared in full on Love in Us All released in 1974. Its rawness and soulfulness simply burst from the musical frame with celebration before Bonner and the ensemble take over and rip it up. The title track is a slow, meditative, drone-like piece with abundant percussion by Roy and gorgeous arco work from McBee. Bonner's "The Golden Lamp" is driven by McBee, Branch, and an uncredited instrument reminiscent of kora and/or an oud. It closes with the nearly 11-minute "Selflessness," a jam that begins as a sung chant and sprawls out into another Sanders orgy of celebration with excellent tenor blowing, as well as spirited interplay with Bonner and the percussionists. These two recordings belong together, and create a compelling whole, revealing a compelling chapter in Sanders recorded history. (AllMusicGuide)

The photo of Sanders in lotus position, generously collared psychedelic shirt poking out from under his white robes, says it all. Having abandoned the Ayler-influenced sound of Pharoah's First, released almost a decade previously, by Village Of The Pharoahs the saxophonist had jumped with both feet into the soaring and the spiritual. The album is a slightly mixed bag, with material from the main San Francisco sessions bulked out with tracks recorded in New Jersey and New York. It's also unusual in that Sanders plays tenor on just one track, the rest of the time contributing a combination of soprano, bells, percussion and vocals.

Pharoah Sanders' Izipho Zam (My Gifts) is a bold, boundary-pushing jazz masterpiece, recorded in 1969 at Town Sound Studios, two years after his mentor John Coltrane's death, but not released until 1973 by Stanley Cowell and Charles Tolliver's Strata-East label. For the first time ever, this piece of jazz history has been transferred from the original analog tapes at 96k-192k/24bit resolution, with lacquers cut by Kevin Gray at Coherent Audio, whose remasters bring new depth and clarity to this spiritual journey. Pressed on 180-gram audiophile-grade vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (rti) and packaged in high-quality glossy tip-on gatefold jackets with brand new liner notes by famed writer Harmony Holiday, Sanders' 13-member ensemble-including Sonny Sharrock, Lonnie Liston Smith, Cecil McBee, and Leon Thomas-will be heard at the highest quality audio available. A two-LP set on Theresa, "Rejoice" features Pharoah Sanders in excellent form in 1981. Sanders sounds much more mellow than he had a decade earlier, often improvising in a style similar to late-'50s John Coltrane, particularly on "When Lights Are Low", "Moments Notice", and "Central Park West". The personnel changes on many of the selections and includes such top players as pianists Joe Bonner and John Hicks, bassist Art Davis, drummers Elvin Jones and Billy Higgins, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Danny Moore, a harpist, and (on "Origin" and "Central Park West") five vocalists. The music always holds one's interest, making this one of Sanders' better later recordings. Scott Yanow

Pharoah Sanders’ third Impulse! album, 1969’s „Karma“, is a milestone of the Spiritual Jazz movement and a natural progression in the sonic exploration that Sanders, along with John and Alice Coltrane, had spearheaded over the previous five years. "The Creator Has a Master Plan", one of the two long tracks on the album, is as close as Spiritual Jazz comes to having its own anthem.

Released in 1971 on Impulse and recorded with two different ensembles, "Thembi" marked a departure from the slowly developing, side-long, mantra-like grooves Sanders had been pursuing for much of his solo career. Instead, it offers an intriguingly wide range of relatively concise ideas resulting in something of an anomaly in Sanders' prime period. Verve BY Request Series: remastered, audiophile-quality 180-gram vinyl from Third Man Pressing/Detroit, Gatefold Sleeve.

Pharoah Sanders: Live at the Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins July 21, 1968 Experimental jazz titan Pharoah Sanders made a lasting impact with his unorthodox approach to tenor saxophone. Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1940, he was given the nickname Pharoah by grandmother, in reference to the potential regal lineage of his African heritage. Playing clarinet at church services during his youth, he began playing tenor sax at high school. In 1959 he moved to Oakland, California, where he played with rhythm and blues bands and befriended John Coltrane. Moving to New York in 1961, he drifted into Sun Ra’s Arkestra after experiencing a difficult period of homelessness. His status began to rise upon joining Coltrane’s band in 1965, where his discordant solos formed a strong contrast to Trane’s more melodious sound, though each player had a strong impact on the other’s subsequent work. Following Coltrane’s untimely death in 1967, Sanders formed a quartet of his own with former Jazz Messengers pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Norman ‘Sirone’ Jones of the Untraditional Jazz Improvisational Team, and drummer Majeed Shabazz. For this blistering performance, given at the Antibes Jazz Festival of 1968 and broadcast on French radio station WDR3, the quartet moves through various Sanders free-jazz workouts, taking in “Venus” from the Tauhid album and “The Creator Has A Master Plan” from Karma along the way, with the rhythm section holding down the fort as Sanders blows himself into the stratosphere.

This is tenor sax giant Pharoah Sanders caught live in France in summer 1971, when the man was still in full post-Coltrane mood. At the head of a strong quintet featuring: Lonnie Liston Smith - piano, Cecil McBee - bass, Jimmy Hopps - drums, and Lawrence Killian - congas, Pharoah delivers two very intense yet serene versions of his milestone piece "The Creator Has A Master Plan" and "Let Us Go In The House Of The Lord", a traditional gospel hymn arranged by Lonnie Liston Smith. This is deep spiritual music kissed by the sun of a splendid southern France summer.

Renowned agent and jazz pioneer Wim Wigt founded Timeless Records in 1975. This
Dutch record label has specialized in bebop, although it also did a sub-series of releases
of Dixieland, Swing and Classical recordings. As of today, Timeless Records has,
together with its three sub-labels, released over 900 albums. Notable releases include
Dizzy Gillespie Meets Phil Woods Quintet, McCoy Tyner’s Bon Voyage, Lou Donaldson’s
Forgotten Man, Eastern Rebellion and albums by the George Adams-Don Pullen Quartet,
Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and many more.
To celebrate the legacy of Wim Wigt’s Timeless Records, Music On Vinyl is releasing
a 45th anniversary jazz series. The series features albums that are part of the Timeless
Records legacy and will be released throughout 2021/2022.
Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in
jazz, which has earned him royal status amongst free jazz players, critics and collectors.
Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, his sound can be as raw and abrasive as it is
possible for a saxophonist to produce. His 1987 album Africa is soulful but also searching
for a strong groove at the same time. The album is recorded with John Hicks, Curtis
Lundy and Idris Muhammad and was an explicit tribute to his late mentor John Coltrane,
another giant of jazz.
Africa by Pharoah Sanders is available on black vinyl. The album includes an insert with
upcoming Timeless Records titles from the Timeless Records 45th Anniversary Jazz
series. The sleeve contains liner notes by Kevin Whitehead

The seventh album by spiritual jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, Thembi was released in 1971. Recorded with two different ensembles, the album marked a departure from the slowly developing, side-long, mantra-like grooves Sanders had been pursuing for most of his solo career, and instead offers an intriguingly wide range of relatively concise ideas, making it something of an anomaly in Sanders' prime period. A//Music reviewer Steve Huey gave it a rating of four out of five stars. This would be the last time Sanders recorded with his regular collaborator, pianist and composer Lonnie Liston Smith, who began his experimentation with electric keyboards on this LP. Also featured are violinist Michael White, bassist Cecil McBee, and percussionists Chief Bey, Majid Shabbaz, and Nat Bettis.

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of iconic Dutch jazz label Timeless Records, Music On Vinyl is releasing a series that features albums that are part of the Timeless Records legacy and will be released mainly throughout 2022.

Part of this series is Pharoah Sanders' Moon Child from 1990, which bookended a decade of musical soul searching for Sanders. The acclaimed free jazz player is known to have a raw and abrasive sound, but reinvented himself on this album as a more traditional improviser capable of thoughtful deliberations. Moon Child is a grand old time throughout, and Sanders has never been more eminently sing-along-able as he is on its title track. The record was co-written with Horace Silver, George Gershwin and Abdullah Ibrahim and recorded with William Henderson, Stafford James, Eddie Moore and Cheikh Tidiane Fall.

Moon Child by Pharoah Sanders is available as a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on gold & orange marbled vinyl and is printed on heavy cardboard with linen laminate finish.

The road to fame is not always a straight line

Before Pharoah Sanders became a famous jazz saxophonist and composer, his life was one of dedication and artistic discovery. Born Ferrell Sanders on October 13, 1940, in Little Rock, Arkansas, he was exposed to music at a young age, singing in church choirs and later learning the clarinet. In the late 1950s, he moved to Oakland, California, where he played in local R&B and blues bands. It was during this time that he learned the tenor saxophone, which would become his trademark. In 1962, Sanders moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. However, he found life in the big city difficult and was often homeless. Eventually he found a place to stay with legendary bandleader Sun Ra, who encouraged him to adopt the name Pharoah. Sanders became well known on the New York jazz scene, playing with musicians such as Don Cherry, Archie Shepp and John Tchicai. In 1965, he joined John Coltrane’s band, playing alongside Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison. Sanders’ playing on Coltrane’s late albums, such as A Love Supreme and Ascension, helped define the free jazz movement.

Spiritually charged jazz

In 1965, Sanders released his debut album, Pharoah’s First, which marked the beginning of his own distinctive musical journey. His powerful, spiritually-influenced music would later make him a key figure in the spiritual jazz movement of the 1960s and ‘70s. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he released a series of classic albums, including Karma, Jewels, and Love in Us All. These albums featured Sanders’ signature sound of intensity, spirituality, and technical virtuosity. In the 1970s, Sanders released some of his most acclaimed albums, including Love in Us All (1971) and Izipho Zam (1973). These albums contained Sanders’ signature sound of intensity, spirituality, and technical virtuosity. In the 1970s, Sanders released some of his most acclaimed albums, including Love in Us All (1971) and Izipho Zam (1973). These albums featured Sanders’ signature “sheets of sound” approach to saxophone playing, as well as his collaborations with other leading jazz musicians, such as pianist Alice Coltrane, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Elvin Jones. Sanders’ discography continued to evolve, with forays in the late 1970s and 1980s into more accessible fusion jazz, such as Journey to the One (1980), Rejoice (1981), and Africa (1988). In the 1990s and 2000s, he returned to his roots with albums such as Moon Child (1990), Welcome to Love (1991) and Black Unity (1997), reaffirming his commitment to experimental, spiritually charged jazz. In 2023, a reissue of the album Pharoah, recorded in 1976, was released on the label Luaka Bop and includes two live performances of Harvest Time.
Sanders the philosopher of sound

Sound philosopher Sanders

Pharoah Sanders remains by no means unproductive. In 2021 he released the vinyl Promises, a collaboration with English electronic music producer Floating Points and the London Symphony Orchestra. The album was widely praised, with Pitchfork calling it a clear masterpiece of his late career. He remains a pioneering figure in the world of jazz. His innovative approach to the saxophone, featuring powerful, emotive free-jazz improvisations, revolutionized the way people perceive and experience music. Sanders’ collaboration with John Coltrane in the 1960s expanded the boundaries of jazz and introduced spiritual and avant-garde elements that inspired generations of musicians. Sanders’ influence extends far beyond his virtuoso saxophone skills. His compositions and performances transcend musical boundaries and convey deep spirituality and emotion. He is not only a musician, but also a philosopher of sound who explores the human soul through his music.
