Released June 15, 1960, Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams is not quite an accurate title. Only four of the album’s twelve tracks are Hank Williams’ songs with all but one of the remaining tracks composed by Cash. Whatever the title, this is a fantastic collection of early tracks from Sun, including “Straight A’s in Love,” “I Walk the Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” Also included is the lean rocker “Mean Eyed Cat,” featuring hot rockabilly licks from Luther Perkins. Producers Reedman and Patrick consulted with John Carter Cash, who serves as Executive Producer, in making the career-spanning selection of 12 Johnny Cash master recordings centering the album. Performances range from archetypal Cash classics like "Man In Black" and "Ring Of Fire" to essential musical collaborations including "Girl From The North Country" (Bob Dylan with Johnny Cash), "The Loving Gift" (with June Carter Cash) and "Highwayman" (with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash). The songs featured are culled from both recent sessions and from leftovers from Cash's first Mercury session in 1986 for the album Johnny Cash is Coming to Town. It includes new recordings of two songs already associated with him from his Sun and Columbia days, "Hey Porter" and "Wanted Man". "I'll Go Somewhere and Sing My Songs Again" is a duet with Tom T. Hall.

The track "Sixteen Tons" was previously a hit for Tennessee Ernie Ford, "The Big Light" is an Elvis Costello song from his album King of America, released the previous year and "Let Him Roll" is from Guy Clark's debut, Old No. 1. The album reached #36 on the country charts, while the only single, "The Night Hank Williams Came to Town", peaked at #43.
