Over a longer period, Krokofant has included organist Ståle Storløkken and bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten. With two albums, loads of concerts and raving reviews with this line-up, this constellation is over for now - and Krokofant is back again as a trio. This is of course marked with a new trio album with brand new music. The resurrection of the trio has been a doozy for the band and has rekindled the joy of a more intense improvisational interplay and fun of making songs together again. While the quintet was more of a playground for Hasslan´s prog-rock compositions, the trio is more focused on the collective and sculpting the music together rather than the more rigid song structures of the quintet. Krokofant’s sound is deeply rooted in the 70s, with subtle nods to King Crimson, Soft Machine, combined with a strong John Coltrane influence from Jørgen. Even though this is not a rare thing in today’s plethora of Norwegian jazz/rock bands, their sound is still quite unique, and Krokofant stands as one of the founders of the current progressive jazz sounds sweeping the Country. From the first tune “Harry Davidson”, it’s apparent that the classic Kroko sound is still intact with a chugging riff and catchy melody, to the more jazzy chord based tune “Triple Dad”, and the spacial atmospheric sound of “The Ballade”, this album ensures to hit both rock fans, free jazzers and jazz-rock nostalgics in the gut. 01.Harry Davidson02.Triple Dad03.Oh My Cod04.Country Doom05.The Ballade06.Pretentious Woman

One of the most interesting young names within the Bergen and Norwegian jazz scene is saxophonist Aksel Røed. He’s playing with many different bands and constellations, including General Post Office and Dag Arnesen, and he is in high demand as a player. With Other Aspects, Aksel Røed has put together an 8-piece ensemble of his friends from different bands, and he draws on his inspirations from the old saxophone recordings of Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders, but also in the composing mind of Django Bates and Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra. As he explains himself: Other Aspects allows me to constantly drift into different directions and usually with short notice. The music is composed but not set, meaning it’s perfectly acceptable, and even encouraged to think and play outside the box. Most of the magic within the band lies in the free improvisation. Recorded in Duper Studio in Bergen, “Do You Dream in Colours?” is a massive piece of an album. And as a proper old jazz album, it comes with liner notes from the old Norwegian jazz veteran Knut Kristiansen.

Datadyr is a jazz trio from Bergen, Norway. Their music ranges from the heartfelt and gentle to the energetic and explosive, and it's rarely far between those extremes. During four years of studying jazz at the Grieg Academy, the inspiration that accumulated and the expression that remains today is characterized by traditional jazz, newer directions in jazz and improvised music. Many of the songs on the debut album have their origins from the beginning of their studies and have developed in parallel with the band. Songwriting and arranging have gradually taken a bigger part in rehearsals, while the band works hard to retain the spontaneous and playful expression that was the starting point for the trio. As the band says themselves: “It was a conscious choice to record everything in the same room, with as few overdubs as possible. We wanted to have good communication between us to make playing as easy as possible, and to capture the energy that comes from the joy of playing music. We wanted the instruments to bleed into each other to get an organic room sound”. The album was recorded in Solslottet Studio at Bergen Kjøtt, with Iver Sandøy as engineer and producer. With “Woolgathering”, Datadyr shows a different and exciting direction of Norwegian jazz.

The first signing on Is it Jazz? Records, the new sub-label of Karisma Records, is the Norwegian instrumental quartet Soft Ffog. And what a perfect first signing for a prog rock label going into vast and scary jazz territory. As the band says themselves: Ever wondered what it would sound like if Jimi Hendrix joined Deep Purple pursuing to sound like Gentle Giant, and then failing miserably because of too much jazz consumption lately? Didn’t think so, but anyhow Soft Ffog´s sound is unique, and draws parallels to the aforementioned acts in somewhat style, compositions and aesthetic, but is more rooted in jazz with their prolonged solos and improvisations.Soft Ffog started as one-off gig commissioned by Kongsberg Jazzfestival in 2016. Despite the success of this event, the band did not get the momentum it needed to be a proper working band. This combined with the busy schedules for the musicians in other bands and projects, the band only played gigs every now and then. These gigs did help refining their sound, so bandleader Tom Hasslan decided in 2020 that the time was right to record their first album with all Hasslan compositions. The band consists of band leader Tom Hasslan (Krokofant) on guitars, Axel Skalstad (Krokofant) on drums, Trond Frønes (Red Kite, Grand General) on bass and Vegard Lien Bjerkan (WIZRD) on keyboards. The album was recorded at Studio Paradiso with Christian Engfelt as engineer and producer. The combined members of Soft Ffog have probably played with everyone in the Norwegian jazz scene, but here they do their own thing and they’re combining the sounds from King Crimson with Terje Rypdal, Deep Purple with Pat Metheny, and it sounds awesome!Beware of blistering guitar solos, gnarly bass, crazy drums and supersonic keyboard playing! 1. The Norwegian jazz-rock quartet The Verge met at the legendary Norwegian jazz school NTNU, and did their first concerts in 2019. The band consists of four still up-and-coming musicians who are all active members of the Norwegian and European jazz, improv and rock scene. Emil, Aksel, Alf and Ingvald have, as The Verge, only done some humble touring in Norway until this point, but recorded a truly vital and original album in Duper Studio in 2021. This was done with the aspiring young producer Vegard Lemme, and the album is now being released on the also Bergen-based label Is It Jazz? Records. The album consists of seven original tracks composed by the different members of the band, which all sound very different from each other. Sonic landscapes that vary from fiery melodic jazz music to hysterical prog rock, atmospheric free-improvisation and heavy riffs are what define The Verge’s debut record. The hypnotic album encompasses a lot of different styles, but the ability of the four instrumentalists to weave it all together in a seamless manner makes it all take on a coherent form. The quartet’s way of improvising, spontaneous interplay, and a joyful attitude towards making music together make The Verge’s self-titled debut album worth a listen. 1.Nessesse2.Hyperreality3.Snake4.Gratitude5.Emils Låt / Postludium6.The Blast Supper7.Patterns for Meditation

The Norwegian Jazz trio Bushman’s Revenge mixes the energy of Rock with the freedom of Jazz in an exciting and exhilarating way. Formed in 2003, the trio (consisting of Even Helte Hermansen on Guitar, Rune Nergaard on Bass and Gard Nilssen on Drums) has had two decades in which to explore different paths and sounds, and in doing so, succeeding in creating a genre all of their own. With 10 critically acclaimed albums under their belts, and over 300 live appearances throughout the world, Bushman’s Revenge has earned a fearsome reputation, with Jazzwise commenting that they are “Insanely good! As if Jeff Beck was backed by Elvin Jones“, whilst David Fricke of Rolling Stone said that they were “Like a Marshall amp version of John Coltrane’s “Interstellar Space“. All the Better for Seeing You is their 11th album, and 2023 marks their 20th anniversary as a band.

Featuring drummer extraordinaire Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, Toto, John Legend, Sting) and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, Donner) as well as up-and-coming guitarist Stian Larsen and keyboardists Brynjar Dambo (White Willow) and Bill Bressler, Solstein is a project that melds the groovier side of fusion with elements of prog and funk. The project was born after Holm-Lupo and Carlock collaborated with legendary guitarist Georg Wadenius on a track for Holm-Lupo’s Donner project. The collaboration worked so well that the pair decided to work together again on a whole album. Solstein is not your typical 2020s fusion affair. A lot of inspiration has been taken from the funkier, more melodic end of the spectrum, with the band name-dropping The Crusaders, Idris Muhammed, early Bob James and 70s Herbie Hancock. Given some of the member’s prog backgrounds, there are also echoes of the jazzier side of prog, like Camel, Happy the Man and some of the Canterbury scene bands. Holm-Lupo and Carlock’s shared love of Steely Dan also shines through in a number of tracks. More than anything, though, Solstein is a playground for the musicians, where everyone was given free reins to do whatever they felt the music needed. If it put a smile on everyone’s face, it was deemed right. The result is an album that is accessible yet adventurous, colourful, groovy and engaging.
