Mundian To Bach Ke" is a bhangra track produced by British musician Panjabi MC, featuring vocals and lyrics by Punjabi artist Labh Janjua. Originally recorded in Birmingham, England, for Panjabi MC's 1998 album Legalised, the song gained international acclaim upon its re-release as a single in November 2002.

The track is notable for its fusion of traditional bhangra elements with contemporary hip-hop influences. It incorporates the bassline and beat from Busta Rhymes' 1997 song "Fire It Up," which itself samples the theme from the television series Knight Rider, composed by Glen A. Larson and Stu Phillips. Back in the 90’s, hiphop kids like myself would often gravitate towards bands like Portishead to take a break from hip hop without going on a complete vacation. Since the sampled drums were gritty and the instrumentation and singing were soulful, it gave people that familiar hiphop vibe while being completely unique.

Now, Portishead’s style and influence can be heard everywhere in modern music as a legendary group who led the way for “trip hop”, fusing hiphop, electronic, film scores, and soul music in rare form. Included in this limited run (green vinyl) 7” are Kero 1 remixes of their quintessential tracks, “Glory Box” and “Roads”. On Glory Box, Kero mashes togehter a mixture of Bossa, Amapiano and house for dance floor energy along with the previously released Roads remix on the B-side, which reached a million streams online with critical acclaim for not destroying the original but actually elevating it. On Roads, Kero adds a fuller dimension using a 80’s analog synth bass while still allowing the lead vocalist, Beth, to remain the focus. 2024 was a big year for Regulate Recordings and their sister club night “Shake Your Rump”. DJ Deviant’s “The Rhythm” & “Make Em Bounce” burned up dance floors in spring, “Summer Jam” saw Atomphunk & Deviant team up with Seattle MCs Mugs and Pockets to devastating effect. “Summer Jam” lit up the second half of the year with support from the Allergies, Boca45 and 6 Music and was included in Craig Charles’s “Funkiest Tracks of 2024”. Regulate move into the new year by setting off two certified bangers. Master of the decks DJ Deviant is back on production duties; lead track “Get On The Floor” sees him once again collaborating with Swamburger (Mugs and Pockets) for a full force party starter. The production pulls influences from the earliest days when hip hop and disco were joined at the hip, with nods to The Sugar Hill Gang and The Furious Five, as well as the Golden Age and artists like Chubb Rock and Big Daddy Kane. Swamburger’s machine gun delivery and Deviant’s sharp cuts pull the track right into 2025 for maximum impact. Flip side “Where’s The Party Clap” is a big trunk of cut and paste funk with a popping bass line, horns, claps, cuts and a groove that just doesn’t quit.

Grover Washington Jr, Hydra. This jazz classic finds its first time on 45. Released in 1975 with arrangement and keys by Bob James it’s no surprise to hear an infectious head nod groove under
GWJ’s sublime sax licks. The drums have been sampled over 100 times from ATCQ to Biggie, but
most will recognise the bass hook obviously sampled by Black Moon
for their underground hip hop classic “How Many MC’s”.
Seals & Crofts, Sweet Green Fields. Never before on 45, the Californian soft rock duos’
album cut can easily slip by most diggers. The familiar staccato bassline will have your neck snapping, while a proggy folky riff floats over head. A slightly extended DJ friendly intro showcases the
bass and drum hook sampled for Busta Rhymes’ 1997 hit “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could
See”.

Multitrack Reworks continue with Volume 5 in the MT series This time it’s Marvin Gaye and Double Exposure going under Smoove’s cutting knife. Extended Drum build ups and vocal breakdowns, expertly mixed using original multitrack tapes.

Smoove is back with his infamous Multitrack Rework series with volume 8, kicking things off with a seven minute, stripped back bass and drums workout of ‘Engine Number 9’.
The flip side has an extended version of ‘Got To Be Real’ with an open drum intro Smoove breaks down the incredible brass arrangements and showcases the stunning vocal harmonies.

Ode To Native Tongues” attempts to capture the feeling of coming of age between the years of
1989 -1993 (and beyond) while listening and witnessing the legendary Native Tongues crew
releasing timeless classic albums and singles. Told through the experience of seeing the early
episodes of “Yo! MTV Raps”, a friend sharing De La Soul’s first album, sharing that album with
my cousin who in exchange shared Queen Latifah’s music or finding out about “Bonita
Applebum” by Tribe at my high school’s homecoming dance. Evoking nostalgia as well as tell
a story of how this music served as the soundtrack woven into the fabric of my youth, my
coming of age, was the aim.
SIDE B: EVERYTHING'S FOR SALE (GOTTA GET IT)
Everything’s For Sale” was inspired partly by a story of an elderly couple who went
brokhaving to pay for their medicine.“Everything’s For Sale” speaks to how the value of
money permeates all facets of this modern life, and as such it seemed only natural for it to
reach into my creative world. This time however I wanted to make a song that cross examined
how this super ficiality has affected music culture, let alone how it has rendered some in our
society invisible -- a clear sign of a society void of compassion. The Platurn beat with a
moving guitar riff pushed this song further, providing me the cover of a funky beat to dive into
a topic that might not normally move an audience. Part cheat code for slipping in a conscious
message to the audience without raising the alarm of the listener who may not be expecting
anything more than entertainment
