Inspired by hatred and some of the vilest and darkest Metal of the 80s, Sweden's most demented twins, Hellbutcher and Tyrant, came up with their only demo Unholy Death, spawned in hell in 1993.Although the tracks immortalized on this demo are poorly recorded and rather amateurishly performed they already and unmistakably bear some of the trademarks the band would come to be worshipped for. Formed as early as 1987 and quickly making a name for themselves with their demos, Czech MASTER’S HAMMER are widely hailed as one of the most important formative Black Metal bands. Eccentric, odd, unmistakable and highly original are some of the words often used to characterize them. Although released more than 30 years ago, landmark albums such as Ritual and Jilemnický okultista, featuring vocals performed in their native Czech, have not lost an inch of relevance and are still essential pillars of the genre today.Having kept the band in limbo for 14 years after releasing the oddball Šlágry, MASTER’S HAMMER would re-enter the scene in 2009. Over the next years, they were busy unleashing five albums and performing many shows. Upon completing their South American tour in 2018, it was decided to bury the band for good.Fortunately, the very last MASTER’S HAMMER concert, which took place in Brno December 2018, was professionally recorded. If classic outputs from DARKTHRONE, ENSLAVED, EMPEROR or ISENGARD et al. make your blood boil, you should make sure to purchase HERSIR's album and immerse yourself in its Northern Black Metal excellence.Despite having already been incepted in 2016 by Grim Vindkall who is primarily known for his band DOMGÅRD, Swedish HERSIR have up until this point kept a rather low profile. With only three demos to their name – none of which released physically – the horde has remained a rather obscure entity.Once released, chances are that the sheer quality of HERSIR's first full-length effort Hateful Draugar From The Underground will rectify that situation in no time, though. Completely devoid of unnecessary gimmicks of any sorts, HERSIR are all content and no show. For a change, everything – the well-written lyrics dealing with Nordic spirituality of the shadow side, the music, the visual presentation – feels genuine and without any infantile pretence.Their very aptly titled album convinces with hateful and majestic Black Metal of a distinctively northern nature. The vocals brimming with contempt and savagery are one of the highlights of the full-length. Vocalist Haugbúi's rather low, raspy tone and pestilent delivery seem like the perfect fit for HERSIR's rather simple and stripped-down compositions. Overtly complex structures are left out to augment the war-like quality of the recording and in favour of conjuring epic atmospheres often built upon melodies stemming from the old Nordic tradition. The impact of some of the memorable riffs is further increased by the sporadic inclusion of keyboards.Overall, this album is the real deal and deserves to be attentively listened to by anyone into genuinely dark Black Metal.Mastered by Patrick W. In 1993, in the midst of the second wave's heyday, when numerous classic albums saw the light of day and many a blaze ignited the northern sky, GEHENNA were brought forth in Stavanger, Norway's fourth largest city. In the course of the same year their efforts resulted in their first and only demo Black Seared Heart which was released by the band on tape in very limited quantities.The demo comprises 7 songs of which 3 are instrumentals serving as intro and outros respectively. Although the demo reveals the members' at the time limited capabilities as musicians, it's, by and large, a very enjoyable first recording with lasting qualities. The sound is leagues above the average demo production since Black Seared Heart was recorded in a studio.The moody songs – for the most part played in moderate tempo – are written in a way that reveals GEHENNA as talented songwriters even at this early stage. Notably, the keyboards, whose remarkable melodies would go on to become one of the band's trademarks were already present on the demo.As an added bonus the rerelease of Black Seared Heart comes with an instrumental, a song recorded at the rehearsal-room and most importantly a studio recording-session that was aborted before completion that was supposed to result in the band's first EP First Spell.The songs were completely new remastered by Patrick W. Engel at the Temple of Disharmony to ensure the best possible sound for this timeless Black Metal classic.This release will include a huge 20 page 12" booklet including an in-depth interview (divided into 4 parts, this is part 1) with all 5 original bandmembers and many never seen before pictures. Although the demo reveals the members' at the time limited capabilities as musicians, it's, by and large, a very enjoyable first recording with lasting qualities. Darkness Shall Rise Productions releases a compilation gathering the three demos from melodic Death Metal pioneers DESULTORY.Commonly cited and appreciated as one of the trailblazers of melodic Death Metal, Swedish DESULTORY's roots are deeply buried in Thrash Metal. Wearing their influences on their sleeves, their first demo From Beyond features songs in the vein of KREATOR, TESTAMENT or MERCILESS. Apart from Klas Morberg's eery howlings which bear semblance with early TIAMAT and the fact that the demo was recorded in legendary Sunlight Studios in 1990, From Beyond is basically a Thrash Metal demo, albeit a very enjoyable and strikingly well-played one.It was with Death Unfolds from 1991, the rabid pack's second demo, that DESULTORY really came into their own as far as style and sound are concerned. Again recorded by Tomas Skogsberg in his renowned Sunlight Studios, the demo showcases most of the band`s typical trademarks they would go on to be admired for. Bangers like “Passed Away” and “The Chill Within” both of which would end up being re-recorded for DESULTORY`s debut album are top-tier Swedish Death Metal with downtuned guitar riffs in abundance and a particular sensitivity for melody.Simply titled Visions, the 3rd demo again recorded in Sunlight Studios in 1992 logically continues DESULTORY's trajectory. Building on the fundament laid out on Death Unfolds some of the ingredients only hinted at previously are extended and fine-tuned on tracks like “Forever Gone” and “Depression”.
