Nature boy with insatiable curiosity

Daniel Pongratz, better known by his stage name Danger Dan, is a German musician and rapper. He was born in Aachen, Germany, and grew up as one of four children in a family with a left-wing background. His father, Ludwig A. Pongratz, was an educator and later professor of education at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Early on, Daniel’s musical talent was encouraged by his parents, as was that of his brother Tobias. Daniel played in various punk bands and was also active as a pianist in a funk band. His younger brother discovered a love of hip hop and introduced Daniel to it. After his school years at the Viktoria-Gymnasium in Aachen, Daniel began studying music therapy at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. There he met Sebastian Sturm and became part of the reggae band Jin Jin from Aachen. He broke off his studies to devote himself entirely to music and earned his living as a musician. Together with his brother Tobias and Koljah, he founded the gangsta rap satire project Caught in the Crack in 2005. Under the name Dan Juan de Marcos and the pseudonym Danger Dan, he released two internet albums with this project. The project eventually evolved into the Antilopen Gang, in which Panik Panzer and NMZS also participated.

In 2012, he released his first solo vinyl Dinkelbrot und Ölsardinen, as well as the collaboration album Aschenbecher, in which he teamed up with Antilopen Gang member NMSZ, who died in 2013. Reflexionen aus dem beschönigten Leben, released in 2018, was an album that delved even deeper into Danger Dan’s inner world, exploring themes of identity, love and existentialism. The album’s introspective lyrics were well received by fans and solidified Danger Dan’s reputation as a master of words. After a brief hiatus, Danger Dan returned in 2021 with his highly anticipated third album, Das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt. The record confronts political and social issues head-on, addressing topics such as nationalism, capitalism and environmentalism. It shows the evolution of Danger Dan as an artist, incorporating elements of pop, rock and electronic music. Danger Dan’s discography is a testament to his ability to combine introspection, social commentary and catchy melodies. With each release, he continues to push the boundaries of German rap and cement his status as a visionary artist.
