Over the course of one EP, an exquisite debut album, “The Line”, that emerged after 10 years of line-up changes, musical refinement and the relocation from the Liverpool art school where they first met, as well as a deeply atmospheric soundtrack for the videogame, “Kingdom Two Crowns: Norse Land”, the Norwegian/Swedish quartet have used elements of Norse folk, Scandic pop and alt and progressive rock without being beholden to any of them. In the process, and aerated by frontwoman Katrine Stenbekk’s sublime, stratosphere-ruffled vocals that belong to the same rarefied realms as artists such as Eivør, Aurora and Gåte’s Gunnhild Sundli, they’ve woven their own restless yet immersive world. In true Kalandra fashion, the band’s new album, “A Frame Of Mind”, doesn’t just tell a story, it embodies one. Emphasising both the delicacy and the dynamism of “The Line”, both sonically and lyrically it gives voice to a shared sense of displacement, and the strength needed to navigate circumstances that can feel open-ended and unsettled. For all the space and scope it allows itself, “A Frame Of Mind” is a transformative experience, underpinned by a constant sense of motion and a feeling of one’s way towards resolution, as if new senses are emerging and being tested to their fullest extent. For all the plaudits Kalandra have now gained, the rapturously received tours with Wardruna, Leprous and A.A. Williams, their viral cover of Wardruna’s “Helvegen” coming close to 6 million views on YouTube and over 7 million streams on Spotify, the closely-knit four piece – completed by guitarists Jogeir Daae Mæland and Florian Döderlein Winter and drummer Oskar Johnsen Rydh – went back to the outlook of that first 2017 EP, “Beneath The Breaking Waves”, when they were still trying to find a foothold and stepping into the unknown, in order to stay true to themselves. 1. The Northman songwriter and actor, and former Heilung singer Jonas Lorentzen releases the debut full-length album of his solo project Nebala: “Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu” on through By Norse Music! After being involved with Heilung for two years, and more recently with the worldwide-acclaimed movie The Northman as songwriter and actor, Jonas Lorentzen decided to focus on his own musical expression, based on a reimagination of Nordic Folk and spiritually driven music. The result is Nebala, spearheaded by Jonas Lorentzen, but assisted and graced by powerful talents such as Sebastian Gainsbourough (Vessel, The Northman, Manchester Collective), Kjell Braaten (Wardruna, Origami Galaktika) as well as non-musician minds assisting in the conceptual development, Doctor Mathias Nordvig (Professor of Pre-Christian Religion at CU Boulder) and Philosopher Naina Gupta (University of Kingston). “Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu” is Nebala’s first full-length studio album and invites the listeners to dive into Old Norse Mythology. Nebala in Proto-Germanic means “the void”; the void through which all life originates. Sexuality is the essence of all life form. Through this album Nebala initiates sexuality into a space of sacredness. Using traditional frame drums, lyre, tagelharpa, Tibetan singing bowls, and throat singing, Jonas Lorentzen has developed a unique Indo-Nordic sound for Nebala that toys with timescapes, soundscapes, and cultural boundaries to bring you back to the primordial experience of music itself. He comments on the album: “When you let yourself be taken by desire and lust, you will be consumed by what the ancient Germanic peoples called Laþu. The ancestor of our modern word “to let,” laþu suggests giving into natural desire and emotion. When Wōdan sought the deepest knowledge of the cosmos he had to brave the dangers of the deep caves in Hnitbjörg and let himself be taken by the desire of Gunlaþu, the forceful goddess of the underworld.”

Jo Quail is an internationally acclaimed composer and virtuoso cellist from London, UK. Her exuberant, celebratory performance style has won her a fanbase in the contemporary classical world as well as among enthusiasts of post-rock, metal and electronica. Now at a stage where she is touring throughout Europe and internationally, Jo enters 2022 with composition and performance uniting in her most ambitious project yet: April will see her take on the prestigious Roadburn Festival’s “Commissioned Music” project performing her new work The Cartographer – an honour bestowed only on artists who have the vision to create something truly unique. Jo received the PRS ‘Women Make Music’ award to record this work in Holland with the full ensemble at Groenland Studios, and, following the premiere, will release this in 2022. An incredible landmark, but one from which there is so much more coming into view for the future.
